Abstract

In this paper we present the behaviours of a simple credit market model built upon a static directed complex network topology. We found that the market structure plays a key role on the stability of such a model. Cyclic topologies accumulate more debt than acyclic ones, and when the total cash is less than the total debt, the market becomes unstable and exhibits chaotic behaviour. Exogenous creation of currency is used to control the market stability. Two regimes of control emerge depending on the credit market structure. First, power law control is needed for acyclic random topologies built upon Erdos-Rényi and Barabasi-Albert algorithms. Second, exponential control is needed to stabilize cyclic market built with the Watts-Strogatz algorithm.

Abstract

The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is known to suffer from stability issues when the collision model relies on the BGK approximation, especially in the zero viscosity limit and for non-vanishing Mach numbers. To tackle this problem, two kinds of solutions were proposed in the literature. They consist in changing either the numerical discretization (finite-volume, finite-difference, spectral-element, etc) of the discrete velocity Boltzmann equation (DVBE), or the collision model. In this work, the latter solution is investigated in details. More precisely, we propose a comprehensive comparison of (static relaxation time based) collision models, in terms of stability, and with preliminary results on their accuracy, for the simulation of isothermal high-Reynolds number flows in the (weakly) compressible regime. It starts by investigating the possible impact of collision models on the macroscopic behavior of stream-and-collide based D2Q9-LBMs, which clarifies the exact physical properties of collision models on LBMs. It is followed by extensive linear and numerical stability analyses, supplemented with an accuracy study based on the transport of vortical structures over long distances. In order to draw conclusions as general as possible, the most common moment spaces (raw, central, Hermite, central Hermite and cumulant), as well as regularized approaches, are considered for the comparative studies. LBMs based on dynamic collision mechanisms (entropic collision, subgrid scale models, explicit filtering, etc) are also briefly discussed.

3. Comprehensive comparison of collision models in the lattice Boltzmann framework: Theoretical investigations

Abstract

Over the last decades, several types of collision models have been proposed to extend the validity domain of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), each of them being introduced in its own formalism. The present article proposes a formalism that describes all these methods within a common mathematical framework, and in this way allows us to draw direct links between them. Here, the focus is put on single and multirelaxation time collision models in either their raw moment, central moment, cumulant or regularized form. In parallel with that, several bases (non orthogonal, orthogonal, Hermite) are considered for the polynomial expansion of populations. General relationships between moments are first derived to understand how moment spaces are related to each other. In addition, a review of collision models further sheds light on collision models that can be rewritten in a linear matrix form. More quantitative mathematical studies are then carried out by comparing explicit expressions for the post collision populations. Thanks to this, it is possible to deduce the impact of both the polynomial basis (raw, Hermite, central, central Hermite, cumulant) and the inclusion of regularization steps on isothermal LBMs. Extensive results are provided for the D1Q3, D2Q9, and D3Q27 lattices, the latter being further extended to the D3Q19 velocity discretization. Links with the most common two and multirelaxation time collision models are also provided for the sake of completeness. The present work ends by emphasizing the importance of an accurate representation of the equilibrium state, independently of the choice of moment space. Abstract

This paper shows that Physics is very close to the substitution-diffusion paradigm of symmetric ciphers. Based on this analogy, we propose a new cryptographic algorithm. Statistical Physics gives design principles to devise fast, scalable and secure encryption systems. In particular, increasing space dimension and considering larger data blocks improve both speed and security, allowing us to reach high throughput (larger than 10Gb/s on dedicated HW). The physical approach enlarges the way to look at cryptography and is expected to bring new tools and concepts to better understand and quantify security aspects.

Abstract

The effect of dissociation of the invading electrolyte on the formation of Liesegang bands is investigated. We find, using organic compounds with known dissociation constants, that the spacing coefficient, 1+p, that characterizes the position of the n-th band as x_n ~ (1+p)^n, decreases with increasing dissociation constant, K_d. 8. Localization-delocalization transition of a reaction-diffusion front near a semipermeable wall

Abstract

The A+B --> C reaction-diffusion process is studied in a system where the reagents are separated by a semipermeable wall. We use reaction-diffusion equations to describe the process and to derive a scaling description for the long-time behavior of the reaction front. Furthermore, we show that a critical localization-delocalization transition takes place as a control parameter which depends on the initial densities and on the diffusion constants is varied. The transition is between a reaction front of finite width that is localized at the wall and a front which is detached and moves away from the wall. 21. On the Linear Components Space of S-boxes Generated by Orthogonal Cellular Automata

Abstract

We investigate S-boxes defined by pairs of Orthogonal Cellular Automata (OCA), motivated by the fact that such CA always define bijective vectorial Boolean functions, and could thus be interesting for the design of block ciphers. In particular, we perform an exhaustive search of all nonlinear OCA pairs of diameter d = 4 and d = 5, which generate S-boxes of size 6 x 6 and 8 x 8, respectively. Surprisingly, all these S-boxes turn out to be linear, and thus they are not useful for the design of confusion layers in block ciphers. However, a closer inspection of these S-boxes reveals a very interesting structure. Indeed, we remark that the linear components space of the OCA-based S-boxes found by our exhaustive search are themselves the kernels of linear CA, or, equivalently, polynomial codes. We finally classify the polynomial codes of the S-boxes obtained in our exhaustive search and observe that, in most cases, they actually correspond to the cyclic code with generator polynomial X-b +1, where b = d - 1. Although these findings rule out the possibility of using OCA to design good S-boxes in block ciphers, they give nonetheless some interesting insights for a theoretical characterization of nonlinear OCA pairs, which is still an open question in general.

Abstract

Cellular Automata have successfully been applied to the modeling and simulation of pedestrian dynamics. These simulations have often been focused on the evaluation of situations of medium-high density, in which the motivation of pedestrians overcomes natural proxemic tendencies. The COVID-19 outbreak has shown that in certain situations it is instead crucial to focus on situations in which proxemic is amplified by the particular affective state of the individuals involved in the studied scenario. We present the first steps in a research effort aimed at integrating results of quantitative analyses concerning effects of affective states on the perception of mutual distances by pedestrians of different type and the modeling of movement choices in a cellular automata framework.

Abstract

Numerical simulations of free-surface flows are important to provide a prediction tool for the optimal management of irrigation canals. Here, we consider an alternative to solving the shallow-water equations. We propose a free-surface model in which the vertical component of the water current is fully resolved. We believe that such a detailed description can be useful to model the flow around gates or in other situations where the vertical structure of the flow will be important such as in the case of sediment transport and deposition. Our approach is based on a two-fluid lattice Boltzmann model. We compare the predictions obtained from numerical simulation and experiments performed on a laboratory microcanal facility. Abstract

Organic compounds with dissociation constants were used to investigate how the dissociation of the invading electrolyte affects the formation of Liesegang bands. The 1 + p spacing coefficient, which characterizes the position of the nth band, was found to decrease as the dissociation constant of the outer electrolyte increased. The procedure used in the study allowed the results to be expressed in simple analytical form that can be used in designing Liesegang patterns.

Abstract

Numerical methods able to model high Rayleigh (Ra) and high Prandtl (Pr) number thermal convection are important to study large-scale geophysical phenomena occuring in very viscous fluids such as magma chamber dynamics (104 < Pr < 107 and 107 < Ra < 1011). The important variable to quantify the thermal state of a convective fluid is a generalized dimensionless heat transfer coefficient (the Nusselt number) whose measure indicates the relative efficiency of the thermal convection. In this paper we test the ability of Multi-distribution Function approach (MDF) Thermal Lattice Boltzmann method to study the well-established scaling result for the Nusselt number (Nu ∝ Ra 1/3) in Rayleigh Bénard convection for 104 ≤ Ra ≤ 109 and 101 ≤ Pr ≤ 104. We explore its main drawbacks in the range of Pr and Ra number under investigation: (1) high computational time N c required for the algorithm to converge and (2) high spatial accuracy needed to resolve the thickness of thermal plumes and both thermal and velocity boundary layer. We try to decrease the computational demands of the method using a multiscale approach based on the implicit dependence of the Pr number on the relaxation time, the spatial and temporal resolution characteristic of the MDF thermal model

Abstract

We consider two formulations of a cellular automata: the first one uses a gather-update paradigm and the second one a collision-propagation paradigm. We show the equivalence of both descriptions and, using the latter paradigm, we propose a simple way to define a Cellular Automata on a graph with arbitrary topology. Finally, we exploit the duality of formulation to reconsider the problem of characterizing invertible cellular automata.

Abstract

Systems medicine is the application of systems biology concepts, methods, and tools to medical research and practice. It aims to integrate data and knowledge from different disciplines into biomedical models and simulations for the understanding, prevention, cure, and management of complex diseases. Complex diseases arise from the interactions among disease-influencing factors across multiple levels of biological organization from the environment to molecules. To tackle the enormous challenges posed by complex diseases, we need a modeling and simulation framework capable of capturing and integrating information originating from multiple spatiotemporal and organizational scales. Multiscale modeling and simulation in systems medicine is an emerging methodology and discipline that has already demonstrated its potential in becoming this framework. The aim of this chapter is to present some of the main concepts, requirements, and challenges of multiscale modeling and simulation in systems medicine.

48. Pore-scale mass and reactant transport in multiphase porous media flows

Abstract

Reactive processes associated with multiphase flows play a significant role in mass transport in unsaturated porous media. For example, the effect of reactions on the solid matrix can affect the formation and stability of fingering instabilities associated with the invasion of a buoyant non-wetting fluid. In this study, we focus on the formation and stability of capillary channels of a buoyant non-wetting fluid (developed because of capillary instabilities) and their impact on the transport and distribution of a reactant in the porous medium. We use a combination of pore-scale numerical calculations based on a multiphase reactive lattice Boltzmann model (LBM) and scaling laws to quantify (i)the effect of dissolution on the preservation of capillary instabilities, (ii)the penetration depth of reaction beyond the dissolution/melting front, and (iii)the temporal and spatial distribution of dissolution/melting under different conditions (concentration of reactant in the non-wetting fluid, injection rate). Our results show that, even for tortuous non-wetting fluid channels, simple scaling laws assuming an axisymmetrical annular flow can explain (i)the exponential decay of reactant along capillary channels, (ii)the dependence of the penetration depth of reactant on a local Péclet number (using the non-wetting fluid velocity in the channel) and more qualitatively (iii)the importance of the melting/reaction efficiency on the stability of non-wetting fluid channels. Our numerical method allows us to study the feedbacks between the immiscible multiphase fluid flow and a dynamically evolving porous matrix (dissolution or melting) which is an essential component of reactive transport in porous media

Abstract

The SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (www.isb-sib.ch) provides world-class bioinformatics databases, software tools, services and training to the international life science community in academia and industry. These solutions allow life scientists to turn the exponentially growing amount of data into knowledge. Here, we provide an overview of SIB's resources and competence areas, with a strong focus on curated databases and SIB's most popular and widely used resources. In particular, SIB's Bioinformatics resource portal ExPASy features over 150 resources, including UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot, ENZYME, PROSITE, neXtProt, STRING, UniCarbKB, SugarBindDB, SwissRegulon, EPD, arrayMap, Bgee, SWISS-MODEL Repository, OMA, OrthoDB and other databases, which are briefly described in this article.
