Accurate prediction of laminar-turbulent transition is a critical element of computational fluid dynamics simulations for aerodynamic design across multiple flow regimes. Traditional methods of transition prediction cannot be easily extended to flow configurations where the transition process depends on a large set of parameters. In comparison, neural network methods allow higher dimensional input features to be considered without compromising the efficiency and accuracy of the traditional data driven models. Neural network methods proposed earlier follow a cumbersome methodology of predicting instability growth rates over a broad range of frequencies, which are then processed to obtain the N-factor envelope, and then, the transition location based on the correlating N-factor. This paper presents an end-to-end transition model based on a recurrent neural network, which sequentially processes the mean boundary-layer profiles along the surface of the aerodynamic body to directly predict the N-factor envelope and the transition locations over a two-dimensional airfoil. The proposed transition model has been developed and assessed using a large database of 53 airfoils over a wide range of chord Reynolds numbers and angles of attack. The sequence-to-sequence transduction model proposed herein provides a more direct approach for accurate predictions of the transition location than the earlier neural network methods, which predict the local amplification rate of a single instability mode at a fixed location along the airfoil. The large universe of airfoils encountered in various applications causes additional difficulties. Transition prediction is an important aspect of aerodynamic design because of its impact on skin friction and potential coupling with flow separation characteristics. Traditionally, the modeling of transition has relied on correlation-based empirical formulas based on integral quantities such as the shape factor of the boundary layer. However, in many applications of computational fluid dynamics, the shape factor is not straightforwardly available or not well-defined. We propose using the complete velocity profile along with other quantities (e.g., frequency, Reynolds number) to predict the perturbation amplification factor. While this can be achieved with regression models based on a classical fully connected neural network, such a model can be computationally more demanding. We propose a novel convolutional neural network inspired by the underlying physics as described by the stability equations. Specifically, convolutional layers are first used to extract integral quantities from the velocity profiles, and then fully connected layers are used to map the extracted integral quantities, along with frequency and Reynolds number, to the output (amplification ratio). Numerical tests on classical boundary layers clearly demonstrate the merits of the proposed method. More importantly, we demonstrate that, for Tollmien-Schlichting instabilities in two-dimensional, low-speed boundary layers, the proposed network encodes information in the boundary layer profiles into an integral quantity that is strongly correlated to a well-known, physically defined parameter -- the shape factor., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Physical Review Fluids journal

We perform Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) to study the acoustic freestream disturbances radiating from the turbulent boundary layers along the contoured nozzle walls of a hypersonic wind tunnel with a rectangular test section. To begin with, the effects of the spanwise end walls are suppressed by confining the spanwise computational domain to a finite segment of the overall nozzle cross section and by imposing periodic boundary conditions across that spanwise domain. Besides providing a building-block configuration to reveal par- tial effects of the enclosed acoustic environment within the wind tunnel, these computations serve as a stepping stone toward the goal of fully-3D computations including the nozzle end walls. Building upon the earlier simulations of Deegan et al. (2018), we show that the computed acoustic characteristics in the spanwise periodic simulations are insensitive to changes in the grid resolution parameters (e.g., x+ and z+). This is relative to the previous simulations that involved a coarser resolution in the streamwise and wall-normal directions, especially up- stream of the test section. Furthermore, we outline a comparison of the pressure fluctuations induced by the turbulent boundary layers over the contoured nozzle walls and several other calculations involving boundary layers over a single flat plate at nearly the same value of the edge Mach number. We also show the impact of having only one turbulent boundary layer instead of two within the computational setup. Various flow statistics, including the first and second moments of the unsteady flow field, are computed for the different flow configurations. Good comparisons of the statistics of the nozzle-wall boundary-layer turbulence and of the freestream acoustic disturbances between the simulations of coarser and finer grids confirms DNS procedure, but also the insensitivity of noise characteristics t section to the inflow turbulence generation technique.

This paper presents further validation of PowerFLOWR aeroacoustic simulations of the High-Lift Common Research Model through comparisons with experimental data from a recently completed wind tunnel test. Preliminary time- averaged surface pressure and microphone array data from the experiment are in reasonably good agreement with the simulations, and the slat is shown to be a dominant noise source on this model. The simulations did not predict slat tones that were very prominent in the experiment, but they did capture the broadband component of slat noise in the low-frequency range up to 1 kHz at full scale. Future tests are planned to demonstrate slat noise reduction technology, and simulations are being used to guide this development.

Experimental measurements were performed on a swept flat-plate model with an airfoil leading edge and imposed chordwise pressure gradient to determine the effects of a backward-facing step on transition in a low-speed stationary crossflow-dominated boundary layer. Detailed hot-wire measurements were performed for three step heights ranging from 36 to 49% of the boundary-layer thickness at the step and corresponding to subcritical, nearly critical, and critical cases. In general, the step had a small localized effect on the growth of the stationary crossflow vortex, whereas the unsteady disturbance amplitudes increased with increasing step height. Intermittent spikes in instantaneous velocity began to appear for the two larger step heights. A physical explanation was provided for the mechanism leading to transition and the sudden movement in the transition front due to the critical steps. The large localized velocity spikes, which ultimately led to an intermittent breakdown of the boundary layer, were the result of nonlinear interactions of the different types of unsteady instabilities with each other and with the stationary crossflow vortices. Thus, the unsteady disturbances played the most important role in transition, but the stationary crossflow vortices also had a significant role via the modulation and the increased amplitude of the unsteady disturbances.

The leading-edge slat of a high-lift airfoil can be a significant noise contributor during aircraft landing. This paper summarizes the effects of several passive noise reduction devices on the 30P30N high-lift airfoil. Experiments are conducted on a two-dimensional multi-element high-lift airfoil with leading-edge slat extensions, gap filler, and cove filler in an anechoic wind tunnel to evaluate the effect of passive flow control on the acoustics generated by the unsteady flow field. Slat geometry modifications associated with the treatments alter the flow field in the region that dominates the generation of the acoustic field. Three angles of attack (a(k) = 8°, 10°, and 15.5°) and three different Reynolds numbers (Re(c) = 1.2e6, 1.5e6, and 1.71e6) are selected as the test conditions. Steady surface pressure measurements are conducted to assess the effect of the treatments on the lift and drag. Unsteady surface pressure measurements along with the far-field acoustic array measurements are performed to evaluate the changes in near- and far-field pressure fluctuations, respectively. Delay and Sum (DAS) beamforming method is applied to locate the noise sources on the model and provide integrated spectra. Implementation difficulties with the gap filler led to structural integration deficiencies that prevented a fair assessment of this technology. Among the other passive devices, the cove filler s the most effective noise reduction, along with a negligible change in the aerodynamic metrics.

Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the full-scale rectangular nozzle of a hypersonic wind tunnel are conducted to study the acoustic freestream fluctuations radiating from turbulent boundary layers (TBLs) along the nozzle walls. The nozzle geometry and the flow conditions of the DNS match those of the NASA 20-Inch Mach 6 Tunnel, and the DNS has been completed for a domain without spanwise sidewall boundary conditions. The turbulent boundary layer parameters based on the DNS compare well with those derived from Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) calculations as well as with the predictions based on Pate’s correlation. A similarly good comparison is observed for both the Mach number distribution and the Reynold’s stresses obtained from the DNS and RANS calculations, respectively. Various characteristics of the acoustic pressure fluctuations within the inviscid core of the nozzle flow are compared with those associated with a single flat plate at a similar freestream Mach number. The frequency spectrum and bulk propagation speeds match well between the nozzle and the flat plate, but the rms pressure fluctuation is higher for the nozzle configuration, likely due to the combined effect of acoustic radiation from the top and bottom walls. Spatial contours of the two-point correlation coefficient display elliptical tails with approximately equal but opposite angles corresponding to the preferred directionality of acoustic structures radiated from both walls. Future work will focus on DNS of the full nozzle configuration, including the effects of the nozzle side walls.

While low disturbance ("quiet") hypersonic wind tunnels are believed to provide more reliable extrapolation of boundary layer transition behavior from ground to flight, the presently available quiet facilities are limited to Mach 6, moderate Reynolds numbers, low freestream enthalpy, and subscale models. As a result, only conventional ("noisy") wind tunnels can reproduce both Reynolds numbers and enthalpies of hypersonic flight configurations, and must therefore be used for flight vehicle test and evaluation involving high Mach number, high enthalpy, and larger models. This article outlines the recent progress and achievements in the characterization of tunnel noise that have resulted from the coordinated effort within the AVT-240 specialists group on hypersonic boundary layer transition prediction. New Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) datasets elucidate the physics of noise generation inside the turbulent nozzle wall boundary layer, characterize the spatiotemporal structure of the freestream noise, and account for the propagation and transfer of the freestream disturbances to a pitot-mounted sensor. The new experimental measurements cover a range of conventional wind tunnels with different sizes and Mach numbers from 6 to 14 and extend the database of freestream fluctuations within the spectral range of boundary layer instability waves over commonly tested models. Prospects for applying the computational and measurement datasets for developing mechanism-based transition prediction models are discussed.

The acoustic radiation from the turbulent boundary layer on the nozzle wall of a Mach 6 Ludwieg Tube is simulated using Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS), with the flow conditions falling within the operational range of the Mach 6 Hypersonic Ludwieg Tube, Braunschweig (HLB). The mean and turbulence statistics of the nozzle-wall boundary layer show good agreement with those predicted by Pate's correlation and Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) computations. The rms pressure fluctuation P'(rms)/T(w) plateaus in the freestream core of the nozzle. The intensity of the freestream noise within the nozzle is approximately 20% higher than that radiated from a single at pate with a similar freestream Mach number, potentially because of the contributions to the acoustic radiation from multiple azimuthal segments of the nozzle wall.

The PowerFLOW(TradeMark) code has been used to perform numerical simulations of the high-lift version of the Common Research Model (HL-CRM) that will be used for experimental testing of airframe noise. Time-averaged surface pressure results from PowerFLOW(TradeMark) are found to be in reasonable agreement with those from steady-state computations using FUN3D. Surface pressure fluctuations are highest around the slat break and nacelle/pylon region, and synthetic array beamforming results also indicate that this region is the dominant noise source on the model. The gap between the slat and pylon on the HL-CRM is not realistic for modern aircraft, and most nacelles include a chine that is absent in the baseline model. To account for those effects, additional simulations were completed with a chine and with the slat extended into the pylon. The case with the chine was nearly identical to the baseline, and the slat extension resulted in higher surface pressure fluctuations but slightly reduced radiated noise. The full-span slat geometry without the nacelle/pylon was also simulated and found to be around 10 dB quieter than the baseline over almost the entire frequency range. The current simulations are still considered preliminary as changes in the radiated acoustics are still being observed with grid refinement, and additional simulations with finer grids are planned.

As a first step toward a study of acoustic disturbance field within a conventional, hypersonic wind tunnel, direct numerical simulations (DNS) of a Mach 6 turbulent boundary layer on the inner wall of a straight axisymmetric nozzle are conducted and the results are compared with those for a flat plate. The DNS results for a nozzle radius to boundary-layer thickness ratio of 5:5 show that the turbulence statistics of the nozzle-wall boundary layer are nearly unaffected by the transverse curvature of the nozzle wall. Before the acoustic waves emanating from different parts of the nozzle surface can interfere with each other and undergo reflections from adjacent portions of the nozzle surface, the rms pressure fluctuation beyond the boundary layer edge increases toward the nozzle axis, apparently due to a focusing effect inside the axisymmetric configuration. Spectral analysis of pressure fluctuations at both the wall and the freestream indicates a similar distribution of energy content for both the nozzle and the flat plate, with the peak of the premultiplied frequency spectrum at a frequency of [(omega)(delta)]/U(sub infinity) approximately 6.0 inside the free stream and at [(omega)(delta)]/U(sub infinity) approximately 2.0 along the wall. The present results provide the basis for follow-on simulations involving reverberation effects inside the nozzle.

Previous simulations of laminar breakdown mechanisms associated with stationary crossflow instability over a realistic swept-wing configuration are extended to investigate the alternate scenario of transition due to secondary instability of traveling crossflow modes. Earlier analyses based on secondary instability theory and parabolized stability equations have shown that this alternate scenario is viable when the initial amplitude of the most amplified mode of the traveling crossflow instability is greater than approximately 0.03 times the initial amplitude of the most amplified stationary mode. The linear growth predictions based on the secondary instability theory and parabolized stability equations agree well with the direct numerical simulation. Nonlinear effects are initially stabilizing but subsequently lead to a rapid growth followed by the onset of transition when the amplitude of the secondary disturbance exceeds a threshold value. Similar to the breakdown of stationary vortices, the transition zone is rather short and the boundary layer becomes completely turbulent across a distance of less than 15 times the boundary layer thickness at the completion of transition.

Numerical simulations are used to study laminar breakdown characteristics associated with stationary crossflow instability in the boundary-layer flow over a subsonic swept-wing configuration. Previous work involving the linear and nonlinear development of individual, fundamental modes of secondary instability waves is extended by considering the role of more complex, yet controlled, spectra of the secondary instability modes. Direct numerical simulations target a mixed mode transition scenario involving the simultaneous presence of Y and Z modes of secondary instability. For the initial amplitudes investigated in this paper, the Y modes are found to play an insignificant role during the onset of transition, in spite of achieving rather large, O(5%), amplitudes of RMS velocity fluctuation prior to transition. Analysis of the numerical simulations shows that this rather surprising finding can be attributed to the fact that the Y modes are concentrated near the top of the crossflow vortex and exert relatively small influence on the Z modes that reside closer to the surface and can lead to transition via nonlinear spreading that does not involve interactions with the Y mode. Finally, secondary instability calculations reveal that subharmonic modes of secondary instability have substantially lower growth rates than those of the fundamental modes, and hence, are less likely to play an important role during the breakdown process involving complex initial spectra.

Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are used to examine the turbulence statistics and the radiation field generated by a high-speed turbulent boundary layer with a nominal freestream Mach number of 14 and wall temperature of 0:18 times the recovery temperature. The flow conditions fall within the range of nozzle exit conditions of the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) Hypervelocity Tunnel No. 9 facility. The streamwise domain size is approximately 200 times the boundary-layer thickness at the inlet, with a useful range of Reynolds number corresponding to Re 450 􀀀 650. Consistent with previous studies of turbulent boundary layer at high Mach numbers, the weak compressibility hypothesis for turbulent boundary layers remains applicable under this flow condition and the computational results confirm the validity of both the van Driest transformation and Morkovin's scaling. The Reynolds analogy is valid at the surface; the RMS of fluctuations in the surface pressure, wall shear stress, and heat flux is 24%, 53%, and 67% of the surface mean, respectively. The magnitude and dominant frequency of pressure fluctuations are found to vary dramatically within the inner layer (z/delta 0.< or approx. 0.08 or z+ < or approx. 50). The peak of the pre-multiplied frequency spectrum of the pressure fluctuation is f(delta)/U(sub infinity) approx. 2.1 at the surface and shifts to a lower frequency of f(delta)/U(sub infinity) approx. 0.7 in the free stream where the pressure signal is predominantly acoustic. The dominant frequency of the pressure spectrum shows a significant dependence on the freestream Mach number both at the wall and in the free stream.

The slat noise from the 30P/30N high-lift system is being investigated through computational fluid dynamics simulations with the OVERFLOW code in conjunction with a Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings acoustics solver. In the present study, two different spanwise grids are being used to investigate the effect of the spanwise extent and periodicity on the near-field unsteady structures and radiated noise. The baseline grid with periodic boundary conditions has a short span equal to 1/9th of the stowed chord, whereas the other, longer span grid adds stretched grids on both sides of the core, baseline grid to allow inviscid surface boundary conditions at both ends. The results indicate that the near-field mean statistics obtained using the two grids are similar to each other, as are the directivity and spectral shapes of the radiated noise. However, periodicity forces all acoustic waves with less than one wavelength across the span to be two-dimensional, without any variation in the span. The spanwise coherence of the acoustic waves is what is needed to make estimates of the noise that would be radiated from realistic span lengths. Simulations with periodic conditions need spans of at least six slat chords to allow spanwise variation in the low-frequencies associated with the peak of broadband slat noise. Even then, the full influence of the periodicity is unclear, so employing grids with a fine, central region and highly stretched meshes that go to slip walls may be a more efficient means of capturing the spanwise decorrelation of low-frequency acoustic phenomena.
