Abstract

The discovery of superconductivity in the Ba-La-Cu-O system (the cuprate) at the 30 K range in 1986 marked a significant breakthrough, as it far exceeded the highest known critical temperature ($T_c$) at the time and surpassed the predicted 30 K limit, which was thought to be the maximum before phonon-mediated electron pairing would break down due to thermal excitation. Despite recent successful observations of superconductivity in nickel-oxide-based compounds (the nickelate), superconductivity above 30 K at ambient pressure in a system that is isostructural and isoelectronic to the cuprate but without copper has remained elusive. Here, we report a superconducting $T_c$ above 35 K under ambient pressure in hole-doped, late rare-earth infinite-layer nickel oxide (Sm-Eu-Ca-Sr)NiO$_2$ thin films. Electron microscopy reveals a small thickness of ~2 nm of infinite-layer phase stabilised at present, which indicates a higher temperature superconductivity should be observable in clean bulk crystals., Comment: Main: 14 pages, 6 figures; Supplementary: 13 pages, 9 figures

4. Cryptic diversity of the slipper lobster genus Scyllarides (Crustacea: Decapoda: Scyllaridae) in the Pacific

Abstract

Fourteen extant species of slipper lobsters have been described in the genus Scyllarides, with six species known from the Indo-Pacific. Previous DNA barcoding of Scyllarides phyllosoma larvae collected from the western and central North Pacific revealed two enigmatic types, labeled as Scyllarides sp-B and sp-C, which could not be conclusively identified. In this study, mitochondrial COI and 16S rDNA sequences from museum specimens of Scyllarides species were examined, revealing that these two types represent previously undescribed species. The lineages most closely related to the Scyllarides sp-B and sp-C phyllosoma larvae were S. squammosus and S. deceptor, respectively, with substantial differentiation. Scyllarides squammosus was thought to be distributed in the Indo-Central Pacific, but no larvae of this species were collected in the central North Pacific where Scyllarides sp-B larvae were collected. This suggests that the population referred to as S. squammosus in the Hawaiian Islands is Scyllarides sp-B. Additionally, substantial genetic differentiation was observed between the western and central to eastern Pacific samples of S. haanii. These findings not only reveal previously unknown species within the genus Scyllarides but also significant genetic differentiation between populations, highlighting the cryptic diversity and the need for further taxonomic revision.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIn statistics, samples are drawn from a population in a data‐generating process (DGP). Standard errors measure the uncertainty in estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence‐generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty—nonstandard errors (NSEs). We study NSEs by letting 164 teams test the same hypotheses on the same data. NSEs turn out to be sizable, but smaller for more reproducible or higher rated research. Adding peer‐review stages reduces NSEs. We further find that this type of uncertainty is underestimated by participants.

Abstract

We report the ultrafast and large third-order nonlinear optical properties of CdS nanocrystals (NCs) embedded in a polymeric film. The CdS NCs of 2-nm radius are synthesized by an ion exchange method and highly concentrated in the two layers near the surfaces of the polymeric film. The two-photon absorption coefficient and the optical Kerr coefficient are measured with laser pulses of 250-fs duration at 800-nm wavelength. The one-photon and two-photon figures of merit are determined to be 3.1 and 1.3, respectively, at irradiance of 2 GW/cm2. The observed nonlinearities have a recovery time of ~ 1 ps. The two-photon-generated free carrier effects have also been observed and discussed. These results demonstrate that CdS NCs embedded in polymeric film are a promising candidate for optical switching applications., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

One hundred ninety-nine CRCs completed a modified version of the "Knowledge, Comfort, Approach and Attitudes toward Sexuality Scale" to determine the effect of knowledge and attitudes on level of comfort in addressing sexuality issues with consumers. Counseling and education-type comfort and comfort with sexual solicitations or discovering consumers in sexual situations (approach) were assessed separately. Participants demonstrated low discomfort on the education and counseling-related comfort scale (M = 1.84, SD = 0.82) and medium discomfort on the approach-related comfort scale (M = 2.78, SD = 0.96), positive attitudes (M = 1.53, SD = 0.74), and average knowledge (M = 2.40, SD = 0.842). Results of regression analyses indicated that 17% (R[superscript 2] = 0.172) of the variance on comfort and 19% (R[superscript 2] = 0.189) of the variance on approach could be accounted for by CRCs' knowledge and attitude, indicating that these were contributing to CRC comfort levels in addressing sexuality with consumers. Implications include the need for continued research concerning factors affecting CRC comfort in addressing sexuality-related issues with consumers, and the need for increased CRC education and training in sexuality and disability. 28. Importance of Addressing Sexuality in Certified Rehabilitation Counselor Practice

Abstract

This study investigated Certified Rehabilitation Counselors' (CRCs) beliefs about the importance of addressing sexuality issues during rehabilitation. A modified version of the Family Life Sex Education Goals Questionnaire (FLSEGQ) was completed by 199 CRCs to determine which issues CRCs believe are most important to address. Six sexuality-related factors were identified: Counseling and Education; Contraception, Pregnancy and STDs; Sexual Development and the Body; Family Inclusion; Traditional Values and; Contemporary Values. Analysis of means revealed that CRCs believe all sexuality-related issues to be important to address during rehabilitation, but that Counseling and Education and Contraception, Pregnancy and STDs are the most critical. Sexuality-related goal planning was found to be the most important item overall. Results suggest that additional training in disability and sexuality issues is needed. 29. Professional Disclosure Practices of Rehabilitation Counselors

Abstract

This article reports the results of a survey conducted in order to determine the professional disclosure practices of rehabilitation counselors in both the public and the private sector. Counselors were surveyed regarding the content, the circumstances, the timing, and the format of their disclosure. They were also asked to share their opinions about the use of written forms and about professional disclosure in general. A descriptive analysis revealed that although some information is routinely disclosed, many kinds of information (e.g., treatment risks, limits of confidentiality) that are generally considered very important in the disclosure process are not disclosed to all clients and/or are not disclosed at the outset of the counseling relationship. Several differences in practice between counselors in the public and private sectors were identified. Implications for ethical practice and risk management related to professional disclosure were discussed.

Abstract

Biomarkers which better match anticancer drugs with cancer driver genes hold the promise of improved clinical responses and cure rates. We developed a precision medicine platform of rapid high-throughput drug screening (HTS) and patient-derived xenografting (PDX) of primary tumor tissue, and evaluated its potential for treatment identification among 56 consecutively enrolled high-risk pediatric cancer patients, compared with conventional molecular genomics and transcriptomics. Drug hits were seen in the majority of HTS and PDX screens, which identified therapeutic options for 10 patients for whom no targetable molecular lesions could be found. Screens also provided orthogonal proof of drug efficacy suggested by molecular analyses and negative results for some molecular findings. We identified treatment options across the whole testing platform for 70% of patients. Only molecular therapeutic recommendations were provided to treating oncologists and led to a change in therapy in 53% of patients, of whom 29% had clinical benefit. These data indicate that in vitro and in vivo drug screening of tumor cells could increase therapeutic options and improve clinical outcomes for high-risk pediatric cancer patients.

36. Association Between Tryptophan Metabolites, Physical Performance, and Frailty in Older Persons

Abstract

Frailty is defined as a syndrome of physiological decline in late life, characterized by marked vulnerability to adverse health outcomes. A robust biomarker for frailty is still lacking. Tryptophan (TRP) metabolism through the kynurenine pathway (KP) plays essential roles in aging, the musculoskeletal system, and physical performance. In this study, we quantified 7 KP metabolites, including kynurenine (KYN), kynurenine acid (KYNA), quinolinic acid (QUIN), picolinic acid (PIC), 3-hydroxykynurenine (3-HK), 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid (3-HAA), and anthranilic acid (AA) using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the serum of 85 participants (median age 75; 65% female; 28 non-frail, 29 pre-frail, and 28 frail) at the Nepean Osteoporosis and Frailty (NOF) Study. We looked at the association between TRP metabolites and physical performance, sarcopenia, and frailty. After adjusting for age and sex, our results showed that KYN and KYN/TRP were associated with higher interleukin (IL)-6 levels (r = .324 and r = .390, respectively). KYNA and its ratios to other products (mainly KYNA/KYN, KYNA/QUIN, and KYNA/PIC) were associated with a lower likelihood of frailty by Fried's criteria (OR 0.93 [0.88, 0.98], P = .009) and Rockwood index (r = -.241, P = .028) as well as a lower likelihood of sarcopenia (OR 0.88 [0.78, 1.00], P = .049). QUIN and QUIN/KYN showed an association with increased IL-6 (r = .293 and .204 respectively), higher likelihood of frailty (OR 1.02 [1.00, 1.04], P = .029 and OR 6.43 [2.23, 18.51], P = .001 respectively) and lower physical function (r = -.205 and r = -.292). In conclusion, different TRP metabolites have various associations with physical performance, frailty, and sarcopenia. Defining the underlying mechanisms may permit the development and validation of new biomarkers and therapeutics for frailty and musculoskeletal conditions targeting specific metabolites of the TRP catabolic pathway.

37. Plate anchor capacity estimation through CPT tip resistance in sand

Abstract

Reliable estimation of plate anchor uplift capacity in sand through analytical and empirical equations is often complicated due to uncertainties in estimation of soil properties required in the equations. In order to address this uncertainty, this study proposes a correlation to estimate plate anchor vertical uplift capacity in sand based on cone tip resistance measured from cone penetrometer tests (CPT). The correlation was established using a database of reported centrifuge experiments on circular, rectangular and strip anchors in loose and dense silica sand at various embedment depths and g-levels, along with the corresponding centrifuge CPTs performed in the same testing boxes. The centrifuge cone tip resistances were also depth-corrected to remove the effect of shallow embedment. Through regression analyses, the correlation between plate anchor capacity and cone tip resistance in dimensionless form was developed, with different coefficients fitted for circular, rectangular and strip anchors respectively.

Abstract

Background: Resistant hypertension is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. The endothelin pathway has been implicated in the pathogenesis of hypertension, but it is currently not targeted therapeutically, thereby leaving this relevant pathophysiological pathway unopposed with currently available drugs. The aim of the study was to assess the blood pressure lowering efficacy of the dual endothelin antagonist aprocitentan in patients with resistant hypertension. Methods: PRECISION was a multicentre, blinded, randomised, parallel-group, phase 3 study, which was done in hospitals or research centres in Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia. Patients were eligible for randomisation if their sitting systolic blood pressure was 140 mm Hg or higher despite taking standardised background therapy consisting of three antihypertensive drugs, including a diuretic. The study consisted of three sequential parts: part 1 was the 4-week double-blind, randomised, and placebo-controlled part, in which patients received aprocitentan 12·5 mg, aprocitentan 25 mg, or placebo in a 1:1:1 ratio; part 2 was a 32-week single (patient)-blind part, in which all patients received aprocitentan 25 mg; and part 3 was a 12-week double-blind, randomised, and placebo-controlled withdrawal part, in which patients were re-randomised to aprocitentan 25 mg or placebo in a 1:1 ratio. The primary and key secondary endpoints were changes in unattended office systolic blood pressure from baseline to week 4 and from withdrawal baseline to week 40, respectively. Secondary endpoints included 24-h ambulatory blood pressure changes. The study is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03541174. Findings: The PRECISION study was done from June 18, 2018, to April 25, 2022. 1965 individuals were screened and 730 were randomly assigned. Abstract

The Change Assessment Questionnaire for People with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (CAQ-SPMI) was given to psychiatric rehabilitation patients (N=223). Results support the CAQ-SPMI as a valid measure of readiness for change among people with severe and persistent mental illness in rehabilitation programs.
