Three indeno[1,2-b]quinoxaline-based passivators (CQs) with different functionalities including ketone, malononitrile, nitrile, and amine were prepared and used as passivators in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). All of them exhibit good thermal stability, low cost, and ease of preparation. The variation in molecular geometries, in planar and spiro-shaped designs with appropriate functional groups, highlights a comparison between their passivation properities. The CQs can effectively passivate defects in the perovskite layer associated with unsaturated Pb2+ coordination. This leads to enhanced perovskite grain size, improved short-circuit current (Jsc), and reduced recombination, thereby increasing the open-circuit voltage (Voc) values of PSCs. The use of spiro-shaped CQ-Spiro as a passivator results in optimal performance, with Jsc of 24.72 mA∙cm-2, Voc of 1.14 V, fill factor of 0.76, and a corresponding overall conversion efficiency of 21.42% (compared to the control device with Spiro-OMeTAD, which has an efficiency of 18.1%). After 264 hours operation, the device can maintain 89.6% of original efficiency. Heptacene (1) has been produced via a monoketone precursor, 2, which was prepared from 1,2,4,5-tetrabromobenzene in nine steps in a total yield of 10 %. Compound 2 was converted to 1 quantitatively by heating at 202 °C. Heptacene exhibited high thermal stability in the solid state without any observable change over two months. To investigate the potential value of 1 as a material for p-type organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), top-contact OFET devices were fabricated by vacuum deposition of 1 onto a hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS)/SiO 2 /Si substrate. The best hole mobility performance was 2.2 cm 2  V -1  s -1 . Background: The increasing emission of flue gas from industrial plants contributes to environmental pollution, global warming, and climate change. Microalgae have been considered excellent biological materials for flue gas removal, particularly CO 2 mitigation. However, tolerance to high temperatures is also critical for outdoor microalgal mass cultivation. Therefore, flue gas- and thermo-tolerant mutants of Chlorella vulgaris ESP-31 were generated and characterized for their ability to grow under various conditions., Results: In this study, we obtained two CO 2 - and thermo-tolerant mutants of Chlorella vulgaris ESP-31, namely, 283 and 359, with enhanced CO 2 tolerance and thermo-tolerance by using N -methyl- N -nitro- N -nitrosoguanidine (NTG) mutagenesis followed by screening at high temperature and under high CO 2 conditions with the w-zipper pouch selection method. The two mutants exhibited higher photosynthetic activity and biomass productivity than that of the ESP-31 wild type. More importantly, the mutants were able to grow at high temperature (40 °C) and a high concentration of simulated flue gas (25% CO 2 , 80-90 ppm SO 2 , 90-100 ppm NO) and showed higher carbohydrate and lipid contents than did the ESP-31 wild type., Conclusions: The two thermo- and flue gas-tolerant mutants of Chlorella vulgaris ESP-31 were useful for CO 2 mitigation from flue gas under heated conditions and for the production of carbohydrates and biodiesel directly using CO 2 from flue gas., Competing Interests: Competing interestsThe authors declare that they have no competing interests., (© The Author(s) 2019.)

A series of Y-shaped sensitizers incorporating quinoxaline or quinoxalinoid moieties were prepared and applied in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). By the introduction of quinoxalinoid functionalities, the absorption extinction coefficients could be enhanced. The molecular structures were modified by introducing an extra acceptor group (A) between a donor (D) and a π-bridge (D-A-π-A) and also by incorporating electron-donating substituents at various positions of the quinoxalinoid moiety. Some of the dyes and mixtures thereof were found to exhibit good light-harvesting efficiencies under both sunlight and indoor light, with efficiencies up to 7.92 % under one sun (AM 1.5G). When operated under indoor light, the efficiency could be boosted to 27.76, 28.74, and 30.45 % under 600, 1000, 2500 lux illumination, respectively. Transcription factor 4 (TCF4) gene plays an important role in nervous system development and it always associated with the risk of schizophrenia. Since miRNAs regulate targetgenes by binding to 3'UTRs of target mRNAs, the functional variants located in 3'UTR of TCF4 are highly suggested to affect the gene expressions in schizophrenia. To test the hypothesis regarding the effects of the variants located in 3'UTR of TCF4, we conducted an in silico analysis to identify the functional variants and their predicted functions. In this study, we sequenced the 3'UTR of TCF4 in 13 multiplex schizophrenia families and 14 control families. We found two functional variants carried by three unrelated patients. We determined that the C allele of rs1272363 and the TC insert of rs373174214 might suppress post- transcriptional expression. Secondly, we cloned the region that flanked these two variants into a dual luciferase reporter system and compared the luciferase activities between the pmirGLO-TCF4 (control), pmirGLO-TCF4-rs373174214 and pmirGLO-TCF4-rs1273263. Both pmirGLO-TCF4-rs373174214 and pmirGLO-TCF4-rs1273263 caused lower reporter gene activities, as compared to the control. However, only the C allele of rs1272363 reduced the luciferase activity significantly (p = 0.0231). A halide-substituted higher acene, 2-bromohexacene, and its precursor with a carbonyl bridge moiety were synthesized. The precursor was synthesized through 7 steps in a total yield of 2.5%. The structure of precursor and thermally converted 2-bromohexacene were characterized by solid state NMR, IR, and absorption spectra, as well as by DFT computation analysis. It exhibited high stability in the solid state over 3 months, therefore can be utilized in the fabrication of opto-electronic devices. The organic thin-film transistors (OFETs) were fabricated by using 2-bromohexacene and parent hexacene through vaccum deposition method. The best film mobility of 2-bromohexacene was observed at 0.83 cm 2 V -1 s -1 with an on/off ratio of 5.0 × 10 4 and a threshold of -52 V, while the best film mobility of hexacene was observed at 0.076 cm 2 V -1 s -1 with an on/off ratio of 2.4 × 10 2 and a threshold of -21 V. AFM measurement of 2-bromohexacene showed smooth film formation. White organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) are at the center stage of OLED research today because of their advantages in replacing the high energy-consuming lighting technologies in vogue for a long time. New materials that emit white light in simple devices are much sought after. We have developed two novel electroluminescent materials, referred to as BABZF and BATOMe , based on a twisted bianthryl core, which are brilliantly fluorescent, thermally highly stable with high T d and T g , and exhibit reversible redox property. Although inherently blue emissive, BABZF leads to white-light emission (CIE ≈ 0.28, 0.33) with a moderate power efficiency of 2.24 lm/W and a very high luminance of 15 600 cd/m 2 in the fabricated multilayer nondoped OLED device. This device exhibited excellent color stability over a range of applied potential. Remarkably, similar white-light emission was captured even from a double-layer device, attesting to the innate hole-transporting ability of BABZF despite it being non-nitrogenous, that is, lacking any traditional hole-transporting di-/triarylamino group(s). Similar studies with BATOMe led to inferior device performance results, thereby underscoring the importance of dibenzofuryl groups in BABZF . Experimental as well as theoretical studies suggest the possibility of emission from multiple species involving BABZF and its exciplex and electroplex in the devices. The serendipitously observed white-light emission from a double-layer device fabricated with an unconventional hole-transporting material (HTM) opens up new avenues to create new non-nitrogenous HTMs that may lead to more efficient white-light emission in simple double-layer devices., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

This study was undertaken to increase the biomass and carbohydrate productivities of a freshwater cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus under hot outdoor conditions through genetic manipulation to facilitate the application of using the cyanobacterial biomass as bio-refinery feedstocks. The stress tolerance genes (hspA, osmotin) were expressed in S. elongatus to improve their growth under various environment stresses of outdoor cultivation. The results revealed that over-expression of hspA and osmotin significantly improved temperature (45°C), high light intensity, and salt tolerances of S. elongatus cells, making it capable of efficiently growing in seawater under outdoor cultivation. The carbohydrate productivity of these stress tolerant strains was also 15-30-fold higher than that of the control strain, although the carbohydrate contents of the recombinant and control strains were similar. Our findings demonstrate that the genetic engineering for improved stresses tolerance in S. elongatus could facilitate the feasibility of using cyanobacteria as feedstock for bio-refinery industry., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Fermentative production of lactic acid from algae-based carbohydrates devoid of lignin has attracted great attention for its potential as a suitable alternative substrate compared to lignocellulosic biomass., Results: A Chlorella sp. GD mutant with enhanced thermo-tolerance was obtained by mutagenesis using N -methyl- N '-nitro- N -nitrosoguanidine to overcome outdoor high-temperature inhibition and it was used as a feedstock for fermentative lactic acid production. The indoor experiments showed that biomass, reducing sugar content, photosynthetic O 2 evolution rate, photosystem II activity ( F v / F m and F v '/ F m '), and chlorophyll content increased as temperature, light intensity, and CO 2 concentration increased. The mutant showed similar DIC affinity and initial slope of photosynthetic light response curve (α) as that of the wild type but had higher dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) utilization capacity and maximum photosynthesis rate ( P max ). Moreover, the PSII activity ( F v '/ F m ') in the mutant remained normal without acclimation process after being transferred to photobioreactor. This suggests that efficient utilization of incident high light and enhanced carbon fixation with its subsequent flux to carbohydrates accumulation in the mutant contributes to higher sugar and biomass productivity under enriched CO 2 condition. The mutant was cultured outdoors in a photobioreactor with 6% CO 2 aeration in hot summer season in southern Taiwan. The harvested biomass was subjected to separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) for lactic acid production with carbohydrate concentration equivalent to 20 g/L glucose using the lactic acid-producing bacterium Lactobacillus plantarum 23. The conversion rate and yield of lactic acid were 80% and 0.43 g/g Chlorella biomass, respectively., Conclusions: These results demonstrated that the thermo-tolerant Chlorella mutant with high photosynthetic efficiency and biomass productivity under hot outdoor condition is an efficient fermentative feedstock for large-scale lactic acid production.

Indoor utilization of emerging photovoltaics is promising; however, efficiency characterization under room lighting is challenging. We report the first round-robin interlaboratory study of performance measurement for dye-sensitized photovoltaics (cells and mini-modules) and one silicon solar cell under a fluorescent dim light. Among 15 research groups, the relative deviation in power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the samples reaches an unprecedented 152%. On the basis of the comprehensive results, the gap between photometry and radiometry measurements and the response of devices to the dim illumination are identified as critical obstacles to the correct PCE. Therefore, we use an illuminometer as a prime standard with a spectroradiometer to quantify the intensity of indoor lighting and adopt the reverse-biased current-voltage (I-V) characteristics as an indicator to qualify the I-V sampling time for dye-sensitized photovoltaics. The recommendations can brighten the prospects of emerging photovoltaics for indoor applications.

A set of eight helical diamines were designed and synthesized to demonstrate their relevance as all-in-one materials for multifarious applications in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), that is, as hole-transporting materials (HTMs), EMs, bifunctional hole transporting + emissive materials, and host materials. Azahelical diamines function very well as HTMs. Indeed, with high Tg values (127-214 °C), they are superior alternatives to popular N,N'-di(1-naphthyl)-N,N'-diphenyl-(1,1'-biphenyl)-4,4'-diamine (NPB). All the helical diamines exhibit emissive properties when employed in nondoped as well as doped devices, the performance characteristics being superior in the latter. One of the carbohelical diamines (CHTPA) serves the dual function of hole transport as well as emission in simple double-layer devices; the efficiencies observed were better by quite some margin than those of other emissive helicenes reported. The twisting endows helical diamines with significantly high triplet energies such that they also function as host materials for red and green phosphors, that is, [Ir(btp)2 acac] (btp=2-(2'-benzothienyl)pyridine; acac=acetylacetonate) and [Ir(ppy)3 ] (ppy=2-phenylpyridine), respectively. Microalgal strains of Scenedesmus obliquus have the great potential for the production of biofuels, CO2 fixation, and bioremediation. However, metabolic engineering of S. obliquus to improve their useful phenotypes are still not fully developed. In this study, S. obliquus strain CPC2 was genetically engineered to promote the autotrophic growth and lipid productivity. The overexpression plasmid containing the type 2 diacylglycerol acyltransferse (DGAT) gene DGTT1 from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was constructed and transformed into S. obliquus CPC2, and the positive transformants were obtained. The expression of DGTT1 gene was confirmed by reverse transcription PCR analysis. Enhanced lipid content of the transformant S. obliquus CPC2-G1 by nearly two-fold was observed. The biomass concentration of the recombinant strains was also 29% higher than that of the wild-type strain. Furthermore, the recombinant strain CPC2-G1 was successfully grown in 40 L tubular type photobioreactor and open pond system in an outdoor environment. The lipid content, biomass concentration, and biomass productivity obtained from 40 L tubular PBR were 127.8% 20.0%, and 232.6% higher than those obtained from the wild-type strain. The major aim of this work is to develop a tool to genetically engineer an isolated S. obliquus strain for the desired purpose. A new class of hole-transport materials (HTMs) based on the bimesitylene core designed for mesoporous perovskite solar cells is introduced. Devices fabricated using two of these derivatives yield higher open-circuit voltage values than the commonly used spiro-OMeTAD. Power conversion efficiency (PCE) values of up to 12.11% are obtained in perovskite-based devices using these new HTMs. The stability of the device made using the highest performing HTM (P1) is improved compared with spiro-OMeTAD as evidenced through long-term stability tests over 1000 h., (© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Despite the fact that benzophenone has traditionally served as a prototype molecular system for establishing triplet state chemistry, materials based on molecular systems containing the benzophenone moiety as an integral part have not been exploited as generic host materials in phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs). We have designed and synthesized three novel host materials, i.e., BP2-BP4, which contain benzophenone as the active triplet sensitizing molecular component. It is shown that their high band gap (3.91-3.93 eV) as well as triplet energies (2.95-2.97 eV) permit their applicability as universal host materials for blue, green, yellow, and red phosphors. While they serve reasonably well for all types of dopants, excellent performance characteristics observed for yellow and green devices are indeed the hallmark of benzophenone-based host materials. For example, maximum external quantum efficiencies of the order of 19.2% and 17.0% were obtained from the devices fabricated with yellow and green phosphors using BP2 as the host material. White light emission, albeit with rather poor efficiencies, has been demonstrated as a proof-of-concept by fabrication of co-doped and stacked devices with blue and yellow phosphors using BP2 as the host material.

Background: Age at onset (AAO) is a known prognostic indicator for schizophrenia and is hypothesized to correlate with cognition and symptom severity. TCF4 and AKT1 are schizophrenia risk genes involved in cognitive functions. The current study examined the interactive effects of TCF4 and AKT1 variants with gender, family history of psychiatric disorders and ethnicity on the AAO of schizophrenia., Methods: This study consisted of 322 patients with schizophrenia meeting the DSM-IV criteria. Six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of TCF4 (rs12966547, rs8766, rs2958182, rs9960767, rs10401120 and rs17512836) and seven AKT1 SNPs (rs2498804, rs3803304, rs2494732, rs3730358, rs1130214, rs2498784 and rs3803300) were genotyped using the TaqMan® SNP genotyping-based assays method. The relationship of AAO with each variant was investigated using analyses of covariance., Results: Among the TCF4 variants, rs12966547 (p = 0.024) and rs8766 (p = 0.021) were significantly associated with earlier AAO. We found a lower average AAO in patients with the AA genotype of rs12966547, while the CT genotype of rs8766 was demonstrated to have a protective effect on AAO. For rs8766, there was significant gene × gender interaction (p = 0.012) in influencing AAO. However, these results were not significant after false discovery rate correction. Significant gene × ethnicity interactions were observed to influence AAO (p < 0.05). The Kaplan-Meier curve of the minor AA genotype of rs12966547 displayed a significant trend (p = 0.008) for onset after 19 years of age. Similarly, the minor CC genotype of rs8766 showed a significantly (p = 0.034) lower AAO compared to the TT genotype., Conclusion: Our analyses suggest that individual risk genotypes may influence the risk of schizophrenia in an age-specific manner., (© 2016 S. Plant aspartic proteases are generally divided into three categories: typical, nucellin-like, and atypical aspartic proteases based on their gene and protein structures. In this report, a full-length cDNA SPAP1 was cloned from sweet potato leaves, which contained 1515 nucleotides (504 amino acids) and exhibited high amino acid sequence identity (ca. 51-72%) with plant typical aspartic proteases, including tomato LeAspP, potato StAsp, and wheat WAP2. SPAP1 also contained conserved DTG and DSG amino acid residues within its catalytic domain and plant specific insert (PSI) at the C-terminus. The cDNA corresponding to the mature protein (starting from the 66th to 311th amino acid residues) without PSI domain was constructed with pET30a expression vector for fusion protein and antibody production. RT-PCR and protein blot hybridization showed that SPAP1 expression level was the highest in L3 mature leaves, then gradually declined until L5 completely yellow leaves. Ethephon, an ethylene-releasing compound, also enhanced SPAP1 expression at the time much earlier than the onset of leaf senescence. Exogenous application of SPAP1 fusion protein promoted ethephon-induced leaf senescence, which could be abolished by pre-treatment of SPAP1 fusion protein with (a) 95 °C for 5 min, (b) aspartic protease inhibitor pepstatin A, and (c) anti-SPAP1 antibody, respectively. Exogenous SPAP1 fusion protein, whereas, did not significantly affect leaf senescence under dark. These data conclude that sweet potato SPAP1 is a functional typical aspartic protease and participates in ethephon-mediated leaf senescence. The SPAP1-promoted leaf senescence and its activity are likely not associated with the PSI domain. In this work, a recombinant cyanobacterium strain with increased photosynthesis rate, cell growth and carbohydrate production efficiency was genetically engineered by co-expressing ictB, ecaA, and acsAB (encoded for bacterial cellulose) in Synechococcus elongatus PCC7942. The resulting cyanobacterial biomass could be effectively hydrolyzed with dilute acid (2% sulfuric acid), achieving a nearly 90% glucose recovery at a biomass concentration of 80 g/L. Bioethanol can be produced from fermenting the acidic hydrolysate of S. elongatus PCC7942 via separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) process at a concentration of 7.2 g/L and with a 91% theoretical yield., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Tröger's bases (TBs) functionalized with carbazoles (TB-Czs) and phosphine oxides (TB-POs) were designed and synthesized as host materials for application in phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes. The TB scaffold is shown to impart thermal stability with high Tg values (171-211 °C) as well as high triplet energies in the range of 2.9-3.0 eV. With a limited experimentation of the devices, it is shown that the TBs doped with a green phosphor, namely, Ir(ppy)3, permit impressive external efficiencies on the order of ca. 16% with a high brightness of ca. 3000-4000 cd/m2. Better device performance results are demonstrated by a small structural manipulation of the TB scaffold involving substitution of methyl groups in the core scaffold.

Ethephon, an ethylene releasing compound, promoted leaf senescence, H2O2 elevation, and senescence-associated gene expression in sweet potato. It also affected the glutathione and ascorbate levels, which in turn perturbed H2O2 homeostasis. The decrease of reduced glutathione and the accumulation of dehydroascorbate correlated with leaf senescence and H2O2 elevation at 72h in ethephon-treated leaves. Exogenous application of reduced glutathione caused quicker and significant increase of its intracellular level and resulted in the attenuation of leaf senescence and H2O2 elevation. A small H2O2 peak produced within the first 4h after ethephon application was also eliminated by reduced glutathione. Diphenyleneiodonium (DPI), an NADPH oxidase inhibitor, delayed leaf senescence and H2O2 elevation at 72h, and its influence was effective only within the first 4h after ethephon treatment. Ethephon-induced senescence-associated gene expression was repressed by DPI and reduced glutathione at 72h in pretreated leaves. Leaves treated with l-buthionine sulfoximine, an endogenous glutathione synthetase inhibitor, did enhance senescence-associated gene expression, and the activation was strongly repressed by reduced glutathione. In conclusion, ethephon-mediated leaf senescence, H2O2 elevation and senescence-associated gene expression are all alleviated by reduced glutathione and NADPH oxidase inhibitor DPI. The speed and the amount of intracellular reduced glutathione accumulation influence its effectiveness of protection against ethephon-mediated effects. Reactive oxygen species generated from NADPH oxidase likely serves as an oxidative stress signal and participates in ethephon signaling. Neuregulin-1 is widely investigated due to its hypothesised association with schizophrenia. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms rs764059, rs2954041 and rs3924999 were investigated (417 patients with schizophrenia and 429 controls). Acenes are a class of aromatic hydrocarbons composed of linearly fused benzene rings. Noteworthy features of these molecules include their extended flat structure and the narrow gap between the HOMO and LUMO energy levels. However, the preparation of larger acenes, those that are larger than pentacene, has been challenging. These molecules are relatively unstable and have low solubility in typical solvents. Recently researchers have developed a new synthesis route for higher acenes using stable and soluble "precursors," which generate these structures on demand by either heating or irradiation of light. Using this method, nonsubstituted hexacene, heptacene, octacene, and nonacene were successfully prepared. In this Account, we summarize the preparation of nonsubstituted acenes from corresponding precursors, describe their physical properties, and discuss potential applications including potential usage in organic semiconductor devices. We first introduced the concept of using a precursor in the work with pentacene. Overall, we divide this methodology into two categories: masking pentacene itself with a dienophile to form a cycloadduct and the construction of higher acenes through conventional synthetic procedures. For the first category, a diverse array of dienophiles could be chosen, depending on the processing needs, especially for use in field-effect transistors (FETs). For the second category, researchers synthesized the pentacene precursor molecules using a multistep procedure. Upon proper activation, these molecules expel small fragments to generate pentacene readily. This strategy enabled the production of pentacene andunprepared higher acenes ranging from hexacene to nonacene. This new method provides a way to unravel the fascinating chemistry of higher acenes.

A soluble precursor of hexacene is prepared from a cycloaddition of hexacene and diethyl ketomalonate in high yield. It can be used to make hexacene thin-films through spin-coating for the fabrication of organic field effect transistors.

A stilbene-based compound (1) has been prepared and was highly selective for the detection of cyanide anion in aqueous media even in the presence of other anions, such as F(-), Cl(-), Br(-), I(-), ClO(4)(-), H(2)PO(4)(-), HSO(4)(-), NO(3)(-), and CH(3)CO(2)(-). A noticeable change in the color of the solution, along with a prominent fluorescence enhancement, was observed upon the addition of cyanide. The color change was observed upon the nucleophilic addition of the cyanide anion to the electron-deficient cyanoacrylate group of 1. The spectral changes induced by the reaction were analyzed by comparison with two model compounds, such as compound 2 with dimethyl substituents and compound 3 without a cyanoacrylate group. The 3rd Schizophrenia International Research Society Conference was held in Florence, Italy, April 14-18, 2012 and this year had as its emphasis, "The Globalization of Research". Student travel awardees served as rapporteurs for each oral session and focused their summaries on the most significant findings that emerged and the discussions that followed. The following report is a composite of these summaries. We hope that it will provide an overview for those who were present, but could not participate in all sessions, and those who did not have the opportunity to attend, but who would be interested in an update on current investigations ongoing in the field of schizophrenia research., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. High performance thin-film transistors were fabricated using a new precursor of pentacene through a multiple spin-heat procedure. High quality pentacene thin films can be prepared by this method and hence a FET device can be made in a top-contact configuration. The device exhibited a remarkable field-effect mobility of 0.38 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) with an on/off ratio of 10(6).

Acenes can be thought of as one-dimensional strips of graphene and they have the potential to be used in the next generation of electronic devices. However, because acenes larger than pentacene have been found to be unstable, it was generally accepted that they would not be particularly useful materials under normal conditions. Here, we show that, by using a physical vapour-transport method, platelet-shaped crystals of hexacene can be prepared from a monoketone precursor. These crystals are stable in the dark for a long period of time under ambient conditions. In the crystal, the molecules are arranged in herringbone arrays, quite similar to that observed for pentacene. A field-effect transistor made using a single crystal of hexacene displayed a hole mobility significantly higher than that of pentacene. This result suggests that it might be instructive to further explore the potential of other higher acenes.

A number of studies have pointed to the association of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) and DARPP-32 (dopamine- and cAMP-regulated phosphoprotein, 32 kDa) with schizophrenia. The purpose of this study was to determine whether these two genes are involved in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia in the Malay population. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms Val66Met of BDNF, -2036C>G and g.1238delG of DARPP-32 were genotyped in the Malay population in 200 patients with schizophrenia and 256 healthy controls. Analysis of allele and genotype frequencies in these two groups revealed no significant association of BDNF or DARPP-32 polymorphisms with schizophrenia in Malays. This is the first such association study in the Malay population.

A series of organic dyes were prepared that displayed remarkable solar-to-energy conversion efficiencies in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These dyes are composed of a 4-tert-butylphenylamine donor group (D), a cyanoacrylic-acid acceptor group (A), and a phenylene-thiophene-phenylene (PSP) spacer group, forming a D-π-A system. A dye containing a bulky tert-butylphenylene-substituted carbazole (CB) donor group showed the highest performance, with an overall conversion efficiency of 6.70%. The performance of the device was correlated to the structural features of the donor groups; that is, the presence of a tert-butyl group can not only enhance the electron-donating ability of the donor, but can also suppress intermolecular aggregation. A typical device made with the CB-PSP dye afforded a maximum photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of 80% in the region 400-480 nm, a short-circuit photocurrent density J(sc) =14.63 mA cm(-2), an open-circuit photovoltage V(oc) =0.685 V, and a fill factor FF=0.67. When chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) was used as a co-absorbent, the open-circuit voltage of CB-PSP was elevated significantly, yet the overall performance decreased by 16-18%. Organic dyes consisting of a [2.2]paracyclophane unit along the main chromophore are examined for their application in sensitized solar cells. These materials exhibit considerably high values of open-circuit voltage (V(oc)) ranging 0.69-0.72 V, and an overall efficiency up to 3.8%.

Transcripts and enzyme activities of antioxidative enzymes were increased by hypersalinity (90‰) in a marine macroalga, Ulva fasciata Delile (Lu et al. 2006, Sung et al. 2009). This study examined the effects of polyamines (PAs) on the induction of hypersalinity tolerance through the modulation of expression of antioxidative defense enzymes. Incubation of U. fasciata grown under 30‰ in the presence of putrescine (Put), spermidine (Spd), or spermine (Spm) (1 mM) for 12 h increased internal PA contents prior to 90‰ treatment. Spd or Spm pretreatments reduced H 2 O 2 accumulation and lipid peroxidation during 90‰ treatment and improved the recovery growth rate after transfer from 90‰ to 30‰. Increases in iron superoxide dismutase (FeSOD; EC 1.15.1.1) activity and transcript levels observed under 90‰ were further increased by Spd and Spm pretreatments, while Put pretreatment had no effect. Increases in MnSOD activity and transcript levels observed under 90‰ were enhanced by Spd and Put pretreatment. An observed increase in catalase (CAT; EC 1.11.1.6) activity and transcript levels under 90‰ was not affected by Spd and Spm pretreatments but was inhibited by Put pretreatment. Observed increases in ascorbate peroxidase (APX; EC 1.11.1.11) activity and transcript levels under 90‰ were inhibited by Put, Spd, and Spm pretreatments. In conclusion, Spd and Spm treatment affords U. fasciata protection against hypersalinity through the up-regulation of FeSOD gene expression, thereby alleviating oxidative damage., (© 2011 Phycological Society of America.)

Free radicals are produced as part of the body immune response triggered by exogenous oxidants. In excess, they impair antioxidant defence system and cause oxidative stress. Antioxidants are hypothesised as antidotes to counteract oxidative stress and improve immune function. Carotenoids serve as a reliable indicator of overall antioxidant level in humans. This study investigated the possible relationship of carotenoid antioxidant levels in schizophrenia. A total of 351 schizophrenic subjects from Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta, Malaysia and 247 healthy controls were recruited. Subjects' skin carotenoid levels were measured using a non-invasive technique, Raman spectroscopy. The results showed significant (P<0.01) reduction of carotenoid level in patient compared to healthy controls, suggesting higher levels of oxidative stress in schizophrenia. Comparison between gender, age, subtypes, antipsychotic drug treatments, and duration of illness was investigated, but none was significantly associated with carotenoid score. Spirulina is free-floating filamentous microalgae growing in alkaline water bodies. With its high nutritional value, Spirulina has been consumed as food for centuries in Central Africa. It is now widely used as nutraceutical food supplement worldwide. Recently, great attention and extensive studies have been devoted to evaluate its therapeutic benefits on an array of diseased conditions including hypercholesterolemia, hyperglycerolemia, cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory diseases, cancer, and viral infections. The cardiovascular benefits of Spirulina are primarily resulted from its hypolipidemic, antioxidant, and antiinflammatory activities. Data from preclinical studies with various animal models consistently demonstrate the hypolipidemic activity of Spirulina. Although differences in study design, sample size, and patient conditions resulting in minor inconsistency in response to Spirulina supplementation, the findings from human clinical trials are largely consistent with the hypolipidemic effects of Spirulina observed in the preclinical studies. However, most of the human clinical trials are suffered with limited sample size and some with poor experimental design. The antioxidant and/or antiinflammatory activities of Spirulina were demonstrated in a large number of preclinical studies. However, a limited number of clinical trials have been carried out so far to confirm such activities in human. Currently, our understanding on the underlying mechanisms for Spirulina's activities, especially the hypolipidemic effect, is limited. Spirulina is generally considered safe for human consumption supported by its long history of use as food source and its favorable safety profile in animal studies. However, rare cases of side-effects in human have been reported. Quality control in the growth and process of Spirulina to avoid contamination is mandatory to guarantee the safety of Spirulina products.

The serotoninergic system has been implicated in the etiology of schizophrenia and other behavioral disorders. Association studies have focused on the tryptophan hydroxylase 2 gene (TPH2) and the 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 2A gene (5-HTR2A). We genotyped two single-nucleotide polymorphisms, A1438G of 5-HTR2A and intronic rs1386494 of TPH2 in the Malay population, using a sample size of 289 schizophrenic patients and 130 healthy controls. We found a significant association of A1438G of 5-HTR2A with schizophrenia in Malays. On the other hand, TPH2 polymorphism was not associated with schizophrenia. This is the first genetic association study concerning schizophrenia in the Malay population.

The twisted bimesitylene scaffold hinders crystallization and imparts amorphous nature to the oligophenylenevinylenes (OPVs) generated by 2- and/or 4-fold functionalization. The resultant phenylenevinylenes 1-5 with unique molecular topology exhibit excellent thermal and solid-state luminescence properties. The amorphous nature permits their application as pure-blue emissive materials in OLEDs. Under nondoped conditions, the device performances observed surpass those for analogous and simple oligophenylenevinylenes known so far; for example, the device based on OPV 2 as an emitting material and structurally analogous Bim-DPAB as a hole-transporting material yields pure-blue electroluminescence with an external quantum efficiency of ca. 4.70% at 20 mA/cm(2), which is higher than those reported for nondoped pure-blue OPV emitters.

An energy upconversion system based on triplet-triplet annihilation exploiting an organic triplet sensitizer is devised and has achieved a white-light emission with a low power laser excitation.

A series of group III metal chelates have been synthesized and characterized for the versatile application of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). These metal chelates are based on 4-hydroxy-1,5-naphthyridine derivates as chelating ligands, and they are the blue version analogues of well-known green fluorophore Alq(3) (tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato)aluminum). These chelating ligands and their metal chelates were easily prepared with an improved synthetic method, and they were facially purified by a sublimation process, which enables the materials to be readily available in bulk quantity and facilitates their usage in OLEDs. Unlike most currently known blue analogues of Alq(3) or other deep blue materials, metal chelates of 4-hydroxy-1,5-naphthyridine exhibit very deep blue fluorescence, wide band gap energy, high charge carrier mobility, and superior thermal stability. Using a vacuum-thermal-deposition process in the fabrication of OLEDs, we have successfully demonstrated that the application of these unusual hydroxynaphthyridine metal chelates can be very versatile and effective. First, we have solved or alleviated the problem of exciplex formation that took place between the hole-transporting layer and hydroxynaphthyridine metal chelates, of which OLED application has been prohibited to date. Second, these deep blue materials can play various roles in OLED application. They can be a highly efficient nondopant deep blue emitter: maximum external quantum efficiency eta(ext) of 4.2%; Commision Internationale de L'Eclairage x, y coordinates, CIE(x,y) = 0.15, 0.07. Compared with Alq(3), Bebq(2) (beryllium bis(benzoquinolin-10-olate)), or TPBI (2,2',2''-(1,3,5-phenylene)tris(1-phenyl-1H-benzimidazole), they are a good electron-transporting material: low HOMO energy level of 6.4-6.5 eV and not so high LUMO energy level of 3.0-3.3 eV. They can be ambipolar and possess a high electron mobility of 10(-4) cm(2)/V s at an electric field of 6.4 x 10(5) V/cm. They are a qualified wide band gap host material for efficient blue perylene (CIE(x,y) = 0.14, 0.17 and maximum eta(ext) 3.8%) or deep blue 9,10-diphenylanthracene (CIE(x,y) = 0.15, 0.06 and maximum eta(ext) 2.8%). For solid state lighting application, they are desirable as a host material for yellow dopant (rubrene) in achieving high efficiency (eta(ext) 4.3% and eta(P) 8.7 lm/W at an electroluminance of 100 cd/m(2) or eta(ext) 3.9% and eta(P) 5.1 lm/W at an electroluminance of 1000 cd/m(2)) white electroluminescence (CIE(x,y) = 0.30, 0.35).

The unique structural attributes inherent to D(2d)-symmetric rigid tetraarylbimesityls render their close packing in the solid state difficult. We have exploited the indisposed tendency of such modules based on the bimesityl scaffold toward crystallization to design a novel class of amorphous functional materials with high glass transition temperatures and thermal stability (T(d) > 400 degrees C). It is shown that a variety of 2- and 4-fold anthracene-functionalized bimesityls, 1-7, that exhibit excellent amorphous properties (T(g) = ca. 190-330 degrees C) can be readily prepared via facile Pd(0)-mediated cross-coupling strategies. As the communication between the bimesityl core and the anchored anthracenes is negligible or only marginal, the trends observed for luminescence of model constituent anthracenes are reproduced in the condensed-phase photoluminescence and electroluminescence of 1-7. In other words, the emission characteristics, i.e., lambda(max) and quantum yields, are readily modulated via appropriate modification of the fluorophores. The functional behavior of this unique class of amorphous materials based on the bimesityl scaffold is demonstrated by fabrication of OLED devices. The 2-fold functionalized derivatives 1 and 2 lend themselves to sublimation techniques, so that the electroluminescence is captured with high efficiencies at low turn-on voltages (3.5-6.5 V). The device ITO/NPB (400 A)/1% 2:MADN (400 A)/TPBI (400 A)/LiF (10 A)/Al (1500 A) for 2 yields the highest luminance of approximately 13,900 cd/m(2) at 17.5 V, a maximum luminance efficiency of approximately 7.4 cd/A at 4.5 V, and a power efficiency of approximately 5.3 lm/W at 4.0 V. Further, at a brightness of 800 cd/m(2) and a current density of 13.8 mA/cm(2), the device is found to exhibit excellent luminance efficiency of 5.8 cd/A, external quantum efficiency of 4.3% with a power efficiency of 2.2 lm/W, and pure blue light with a CIE(x,y) (x = 0.13, y = 0.18). The performance characteristics of the devices fabricated for 1 and 2 are remarkable. Although the 4-fold functionalized systems did not permit sublimation leading to spin-coating as a means for device fabrication, the observed electroluminescence for 4 and 5 attests to a broader scope and applicability of this new category of amorphous molecules for application in OLEDs.

A CO adduct of pentacene with an unsymmetrical structure is synthesized; it is soluble and can be spin-coated into thin films. Pentacene is regenerated in near quantitative yield by either thermal or photoinduced elimination of CO. OTFT devices fabricated by this compound exhibit typical FET characteristics.

The diarylaminobiphenyl-functionalized bimesityls and exhibit amorphous nature, high thermal stability and excellent blue emission in the solid state. They serve as both hole-transporting and emissive materials in OLEDs for blue emission with high external quantum efficiencies.

The sterically congested tetraarylpyrenes 1-3, which can be readily accessed by Suzuki coupling, exhibit no-aggregation (pi-stacking) behavior in both solution and solid states. The indisposed tendency of 1-3 toward crystallization and their moderate molecular dimensions permit exploitation as blue light emitting materials in OLEDs with respectable device performances.

A new type of soluble pentacene precursor is synthesized, which extrudes a unit of CO upon heating at 150 degrees C, to produce pentacene in nearly quantitative yield.

Through design and synthesis of a new series of dyads I-III composed of 2,3-dimethoxynaphthalene as an electron donor (D) and 2,3-dicyanonaphthalene as an acceptor (A) bridged by n-norbornadiene (n = 1-3) we demonstrate an excellent prototype to switch the excited-state electron-transfer dynamics from an adiabatic to a nonadiabatic process. I reveals a remarkable excitonic effect and undergoes an adiabatic type of electron transfer (ET), resulting in a unique charge-transfer emission, of which the peak wavelength exhibits strong solvatochromism. Conversely, upon exciting the donor moiety, a fast D --> A energy transfer takes place for II (approximately 3 ps) and III (< or =30 ps), followed by a nonadiabatic type, weak coupled electron transfer with a relatively slow ET rate, giving rise to dual emission in polar solvents. Further detailed temperature-dependent studies of the ET rate deduced reaction barriers of 2.7 kcal/mol (for II) and 1.3 kcal/mol (for III) in diethyl ether and CH2Cl2, respectively. The results lead to a deduction of the reaction free energy and reorganization energy for both II (in diethyl ether) and III (in CH2Cl2). Theoretical (for I) and experimental (for II and III) approaches estimate the electronic coupling to be 860, 21.9, and 3.2 cm(-1) for I, II, and III, respectively, supporting the adiabatic versus nonadiabatic switching mechanism.

The first total synthesis of louisianin A, 4-allyl-6,7-dihydro-1-hydroxycyclopenta[c]pyridin-5-one, is achieved from 2-chloro-4-cyanopyridine 5 via seven steps in an overall 24% yield. The key step is a cyclization-decarboxylation sequence toward the formation of a cyclopentenone ring.

Sesamin (1) and asarinin (2) are two C-7' epimeric lignans. Molecular modeling by semiempirical methods indicated that 1 is more stable than 2 by about 2.5 kcal/mol. However, epimerization under acidic conditions led to a 44.8/55.2 equilibrium ratio of 1 and 2. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that 1 was monoclinic with a = 10.0435(19) A, b = 6.9151(8) A, c = 11.8460(13) A, and 2 was triclinic with a = 5.595(5) A, b = 9.5910(18) A, c = 15.620(4) A. The unexpected equilibrium ratio of 1 and 2 indicated that structural changes are dependent on the conditions of the extraction processes.
