This paper explores the intercultural sensitivity of primary school teachers and therefore their ability to communicate effectively in multicultural contexts. A survey of 148 Greek school teachers was conducted applying the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale of Chen and Starosta. Participants drawn from four Geographical prefectures. Analysis of research data revealed a very satisfactory degree of intercultural sensitivity, with participants achieving a total score of 98.6 out of 120. All five factors of the scale, namely “Interaction Engagement”, “Respect for Cultural Differences”, “Interaction Confidence”, “Interaction Enjoyment” and “Interaction Attentiveness”, revealed high scores but with some mean variations., Educational Journal of the University of Patras UNESCO Chair, Vol. 5, N. 2 (2018) - Narratives of reflexivity and inclusiveness

Background : To compare the differences between elderly and non-elderly patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) due to viral infections. Methods : Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbation were recruited and classified as elderly (>65 years) and non-elderly (≤ 65 years). Sputum and oropharyngeal samples were assessed, PCR for respiratory viruses and cultures for common pathogens were performed. Results : 247 patients (median age: 69.3±9.5 years) were recruited and categorized into group A: non-elderly patients [n=81 (32.8%), median age 58±5.99] and group B: elderly patients [n=166 (67.2%), median age 74.8±4.8] years. In 133 (53.8%) patients a viral infection was identified and in 34 (13.8%) a bacterial pathogen was isolated from cultures. In 18 (7.3%) patients a double infection (bacterial+viral) was identified. To measure the inter- and intraobserver repeatability and reproducibility of choroidal thickness measurements taken by the enhanced depth imaging of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) in randomly selected subjects using two different protocols. Twenty subjects of the Thessaloniki Eye Study database were randomly selected. The participants underwent EDI-OCT, and the choroidal thickness was measured on EDI images using two different protocols. All images were assessed by two examiners independently in two sessions in different days. The interobserver intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for average choroidal thickness was 0.944. The average ICC for central, Cmin, and Cmax choroidal thickness was 0.899, 0.863, and 0.955, respectively. The interobserver ICC for average choroidal volume was 0.932. Intraobserver repeatability ICC for grader 1 ranged between 0.925 and 0.9720 and for grader 2 between 0.913 and 0.994. Choroidal thickness measurements by EDI-OCT showed a high inter- and intraobserver reproducibility.

UNLABELLED In this work, the oxidative and thermal stabilities of 4 different encapsulating agents (chitosan [CH], modified starch [MS], gum arabic [GA], and maltodextrin [MD]) used in fennel oleoresin microencapsulation by the freeze-drying technique were evaluated both individually and in blends (binary and ternary ones). The oxidative stability of the encapsulated products was assessed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis of the secondary oxidation volatiles along with the use of oxidation markers (peroxide value, PV), while a differential scanning calorimetery analysis was conducted. Gum arabic, both plain and its mixtures, exhibited the lowest protection against lipid oxidation, presenting high PVs. However, good microencapsulation efficiency along with the best oxidative stability in terms of PV and thermal stability indicated that the formulations of MS-CH and MS-MD-CH could be suggested as alternative encapsulating agents. PRACTICAL APPLICATION Herbal oleoresins including fennel can provide various nutritional benefits; however, they are sensitive to oxidation and should be microencapsulated. Therefore, there is a need for encapsulating agents that provide good microencapsulation efficiency and enhance at the same time oxidative and thermal stability.

Background Central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) is a common complication in children with malignancy, often leading to prolonged hospitalization, delay in chemotherapy or catheter removal. This retrospective epidemiological study reviewed 91 children with malignancy over a 5 year period between 2011 and 2015 and analyzed potential risk factors for CLABSI. Methods Symptoms, laboratory and microbiology characteristics, subsequent treatment and outcome were recorded and analyzed. All the collected data were processed through SPSS for statistical analysis. Results Among 40 episodes of CLABSI recorded in 30 patients, the rate of CLABSI was estimated as 2.62 episodes per 1,000 days of central venous catheter (CVC) carriage. Most of the bacterial pathogens isolated in CLABSI episodes were Gram positive, including different strains of staphylococci, while Gram-negative bacteria were involved in 30% of episodes. Invasive mycosis was isolated in 7.5% of episodes, accounting for the highest catheter removal rate. Intensive chemotherapy and prolonged hospitalization proved to be independent risk factors for CVC infection. In children with neutropenia, the risk for CLABSI was also fourfold greater (P = 0.001). Children with leukemia had a fivefold greater risk for CLABSI (P = 0.005). Finally, although 36% of patients received antibiotic lock therapy, in 15% of these patients catheter replacement could not be avoided due to persistent serious infection. Conclusions Younger age, neutropenia, hematologic malignancy and longer catheterization are important risk factors for CLABSI, but further research is required for the prevention of catheter-related infection in children with malignancy.

Aim: Retrospective study of cases of choroidal melanoma examined at the 1st Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, during the 10-year period, from January 2002 to December 2011. Materials and Methods: The study group consists of 84 patients (84 eyes) with newly diagnosed choroidal melanoma. The documentation of the location and the dimensions of the melanomas, based on B-Ultrasonography findings (apical height, diameter), were included. A total of 58 patients were referred to a specialized center abroad for conservative irradiation therapy. Twenty six eyes were enucleated due to large size of the tumor and the histopathological type was determined. Results: Of the 84 cases, 44 were located at the posterior pole while 40 anteriorly. Based on size, 6% (5/84) were small, 58% (49/84) were medium and 36% (30/84) large. Based on the histopathological analysis of 22 of the 26 eyes enucleated, 36% were mixed-cell, 32% were spindle cell and 27% were epithelioid cell melanomas. Conclusions: Our study is the first documentation and classification of newly diagnosed cases of choroidal melanomas. The large number of mandatory enucleations, due to large size, is surprising. Patients need to be better informed about preventive fundoscopy for diagnosis of asymptomatic melanoma at an earlier stage.

The aim of this article is to examine the effect of omega-3 (ω-3) long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) intake on retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) by reviewing the experimental and clinical trials conducted on animal models and infants. LCPUFAs demonstrate cytoprotective and cytotherapeutic actions contributing to a number of anti-angiogenic and neuroprotective mechanisms within the retina. Their intake appears to have a beneficial effect on ischemia, oxidative stress, inflammation and cellular signaling mechanisms, influencing retinal cell gene expression and cellular differentiation. ω-3 LCPUFAs may modulate metabolic processes that activate molecules implicated in the pathogenesis of vasoproliferative and neurodegenerative retinal diseases such as ROP.
