Abstract

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors offer unique electronic and optical properties, which are significantly different from their bulk counterparts. It is known that the electronic structure of 2D MoS2, which is the most popular member of the family, depends on the number of layers. Its electronic structure alters dramatically at near atomically thin morphologies, producing strong photoluminescence (PL). Developing processes for controlling the 2D MoS2PL is essential to efficiently harness many of its optical capabilities. So far, it has been shown that this PL can be electrically or mechanically gated. Here, we introduce an electrochemical approach to actively control the PL of liquid-phase-exfoliated 2D MoS2nanoflakes by manipulating the amount of intercalated ions including Li+, Na+, and K+into and out of the 2D crystal structure. These ions are selected as they are crucial components in many bioprocesses. We show that this controlled intercalation allows for large PL modulations. The introduced electrochemically controlled PL will find significant applications in future chemical and bio-optical sensors as well as optical modulators/switches.

Abstract

We demonstrate a magnetocaloric ferrofluid based on a gadolinium saturated liquid metal matrix, using a gallium-based liquid metal alloy as the solvent and suspension medium. The material is liquid at room temperature, while exhibiting spontaneous magnetization and a large magnetocaloric effect. The magnetic properties were attributed to the formation of gadolinium nanoparticles suspended within the liquid gallium alloy, which acts as a reaction solvent during the nanoparticle synthesis. High nanoparticle weight fractions exceeding 2% could be suspended within the liquid metal matrix. The liquid metal ferrofluid shows promise for magnetocaloric cooling due to its high thermal conductivity and its liquid nature. Magnetic and thermoanalytic characterizations reveal that the developed material remains liquid within the temperature window required for domestic refrigeration purposes, which enables future fluidic magnetocaloric devices. Additionally, the observed formation of nanometer-sized metallic particles within the supersaturated liquid metal solution has general implications for chemical synthesis and provides a new synthetic pathway toward metallic nanoparticles based on highly reactive rare earth metals. Abstract

Planar 2D materials are possibly the ideal channel candidates for future field effect transistors (FETs), due to their unique electronic properties. However, the performance of FETs based on 2D materials is yet to exceed those of conventional silicon based devices. Here, a 2D channel thin film made from liquid phase exfoliated molybdenum oxide nanoflake inks with highly controllable substoichiometric levels is presented. The ability to induce oxygen vacancies by solar light irradiation in an aqueous environment allows the tuning of electronic properties in 2D substoichiometric molybdenum oxides (MoO3− x). The highest mobility is found to be ≈600 cm2 V−1 s−1 with an estimated free electron concentration of ≈1.6 × 1021 cm−3 and an optimal IOn/ IOff ratio of >105 for the FETs made of 2D flakes irradiated for 30 min ( x = 0.042). Abstract

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) in its two-dimensional (2D) morphology has favorable catalytic properties for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To fully take advantage of this capability and in order to enhance this material’s HER performance, viable methods for synthesizing and tuning electronic properties of 2D MoS2should be developed. Here, we demonstrate a facile and nonhazardous approach to partially intercalate Li+ions into the 2D MoS2host structure. We show that such an intercalation is possible in a nonhazardous saline Li+containing solution using a grinding/sonication-assisted exfoliation method in both dark and simulated sun irradiation conditions. A partial phase transformation from semiconducting (2H) to metallic (1T) phase is observed for the majority of flakes, after the process. We observe a notable enhancement of the HER activity for samples prepared under light illumination in the presence of a Li+containing solution, in comparison to both pristine 2D MoS2samples and samples processed in the dark. This method provides an effective approach for phase engineering of 2D MoS2for enhancing its HER performance.

Abstract

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a gas species that plays an important role in certain industrial, farming, and healthcare sectors. However, there are still significant challenges for NO2sensing at low detection limits, especially in the presence of other interfering gases. The NO2selectivity of current gas-sensing technologies is significantly traded-off with their sensitivity and reversibility as well as fabrication and operating costs. In this work, we present an important progress for selective and reversible NO2sensing by demonstrating an economical sensing platform based on the charge transfer between physisorbed NO2gas molecules and two-dimensional (2D) tin disulfide (SnS2) flakes at low operating temperatures. The device shows high sensitivity and superior selectivity to NO2at operating temperatures of less than 160 °C, which are well below those of chemisorptive and ion conductive NO2sensors with much poorer selectivity. At the same time, excellent reversibility of the sensor is demonstrated, which has rarely been observed in other 2D material counterparts. Such impressive features originate from the planar morphology of 2D SnS2as well as unique physical affinity and favorable electronic band positions of this material that facilitate the NO2physisorption and charge transfer at parts per billion levels. The 2D SnS2-based sensor provides a real solution for low-cost and selective NO2gas sensing.

Quasi-two-dimensional(quasi-2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a photoluminescence(PL) material with unique properties.The recent demonstration of its PL, controlled by the intercalationof positive ions, can lead to many opportunities for employing thisquasi-2D material in ion-related biological applications. Here, wepresent two representative models of biological systems that incorporatethe ion-controlled PL of quasi-2D MoS2nanoflakes. Abstract

The limitation of hot spot cooling in microchips represents an important hurdle for the electronics industry to overcome with coolers yet to exceed the efficiencies required. Nanotechnology-enabled heat sinks that can be magnetophoretically formed onto the hot spots within a microfluidic environment are presented. CrO2 nanoparticles, which are dynamically chained and docked onto the hot spots, establish tuneable high-aspect-ratio nanofins for the heat exchange between these hot spots and the liquid coolant. These nanofins can also be grown and released on demand, absorbing and releasing the heat from the hot spots into the microfluidic system. It is shown that both high aspect ratio and flexibility of the fins have a dramatic effect on increasing the heat sinking efficiency. Abstract

In this paper, we present H2gas sensors based on hollow and filled, well-aligned electrospun SnO2nanofibers, operating at a low temperature of 150 °C. SnO2nanofibers with diameters ranging from 80 to 400 nm have been successfully synthesized in which the diameter of the nanofibers can be controlled by adjusting the concentration of polyacrylonitrile in the solution for electrospinning. The presence of this polymer results in the formation of granular walls for the nanofibers. We discussed the correlation between nanofibers morphology, structure, oxygen vacancy contents and the gas sensing performances. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the granular hollow SnO2nanofibers, which show the highest responses, contain a significant number of oxygen vacancies, which are favorable for gas sensor operating at low temperatures.

Abstract

Dielectrophoresis, the induced motion of polarisable particles in non-homogenous electric field, has been proven as a versatile mechanism to transport, immobilise, sort and characterise micro/nano scale particle in microfluidic platforms. The performance of dielectrophoretic (DEP) systems depend on two parameters: the configuration of microelectrodes designed to produce the DEP force and the operating strategies devised to employ this force in such processes. This work summarises the unique features of curved microelectrodes for the DEP manipulation of target particles in microfluidic systems. The curved microelectrodes demonstrate exceptional capabilities including (i) creating strong electric fields over a large portion of their structure, (ii) minimising electro-thermal vortices and undesired disturbances at their tips, (iii) covering the entire width of the microchannel influencing all passing particles, and (iv) providing a large trapping area at their entrance region, as evidenced by extensive numerical and experimental analyses. These microelectrodes have been successfully applied for a variety of engineering and biomedical applications including (i) sorting and trapping model polystyrene particles based on their dimensions, (ii) patterning carbon nanotubes to trap low-conductive particles, (iii) sorting live and dead cells based on their dielectric properties, (iv) real-time analysis of drug-induced cell death, and (v) interfacing tumour cells with environmental scanning electron microscopy to study their morphological properties. The DEP systems based on curved microelectrodes have a great potential to be integrated with the future lab-on-achip systems.
