Abstract Land‐use intensification in grassland ecosystems (i.e. increased mowing frequency, intensified grazing) has a strong negative effect on biodiversity and ecosystem services. However, accurate information on grassland‐use intensity is difficult to acquire and restricted to the local or regional level. Recent studies have shown that mowing events can be mapped for large areas using satellite image time series. The transferability of such approaches, especially to mountain areas, has been little explored, however, and the relevance for ecological applications in biodiversity and conservation has hardly been investigated. Here, we used a rule‐based algorithm to produce annual maps for 2018–2021 of grassland‐management events, that is, mowing and/or grazing, for Switzerland using Sentinel‐2 and Landsat 8 satellite data. We assessed the detection of management events based on independent reference data, which we acquired from daily time series of publicly available webcams that are widely distributed across Switzerland. We further examined the relationships between the generated grassland‐use intensity measures and plant species richness and ecological indicator values derived from a nationwide field survey. The webcam‐based verification for 2020 and 2021 revealed that most detected management events were actual mowing/grazing events (≥78%), but that a substantial number of events were not detected (up to 57%), particularly grazing events at higher elevations. We found lower plant species richness and higher mean ecological indicator values for nutrients and mowing tolerance with more frequent management events and those starting earlier in the year. A large proportion of the variance was explained by our use‐intensity measures. Our findings therefore highlight that remotely assessed management events can characterise land‐use intensity at fine spatial and temporal resolutions across broad scales and can explain plant biodiversity patterns in grasslands.

Key message Evolving societal demands and accelerated ecological dynamics due to global change are rapidly altering forest ecosystems and their services. This has prompted the need for advancing forest inventorying and monitoring initatives to expand their scope, improve data collection, foster scientific understanding, and better inform policy responses. Here, we discuss the collaborative processes followed to develop an Advanced Inventorying and Monitoring (AIM) system for Swiss forests. Further, we provide the key messages that emerged from this process which can be of interest to those involved in similar processes at the national/international level.

Forest edges represent the transition zone (ecotone) between the forest interior and the surrounding open land. Due to their great ecological importance, the value of assessing the structure of forest edges has been recognized. In Switzerland, for example, forest edge structure is assessed during field surveys of the Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI). However, these assessments are time consuming and limited to sample plots. Publicly available countrywide airborne laser scanning (ALS) data, in contrast, offers possibilities to retrieve forest edge structure information over large spatial extents. In this study, we derived five metrics from ALS point clouds, namely the canopy height variability; ratios of the areas of the three edge components, i.e. shrub belt, shelterbelt and forest layer; the sky-view fraction; the shelterbelt slope; and the front density of the forest edge. These metrics describe the three-dimensional edge structure and therefore could enhance existing NFI edge metrics, which focus on two-dimensional structure characteristics. An expert assessment of the ALS edge metrics demonstrated the ability of the defined set of edge metrics to capture ecologically relevant and indicative characteristics of forest edges. Understanding this relationship between edge metrics and ecological functions is a prerequisite if ALS metrics are to be integrated into NFIs. We subsequently used the ALS edge metrics to group 284 forest edge into three classes with respect to their structural complexity using k-means clustering. The results indicated that the structual complexity was low for 173, medium for 46 and high for 65 forest edges, respectively. Applied to countrywide ALS data sets, our approach allows to retrieve area-wide, spatially continuous information on the forest edge conditions, and, if multitemporal ALS data is available, to monitor the development of the forest edges.

Abstract The launch of NASA's Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) mission in 2018 opens new opportunities to quantitatively describe forest ecosystems across large scales. While GEDI's height‐related metrics have already been extensively evaluated, the utility of GEDI for assessing the full spectrum of structural variability—particularly in topographically complex terrain—remains incompletely understood. Here, we quantified GEDI's potential to estimate forest structure in mountain landscapes at the plot and landscape level, with a focus on variables of high relevance in ecological applications. We compared five GEDI metrics including relative height percentiles, plant area index, cover and understory cover to airborne laser scanning (ALS) data in two contrasting mountain landscapes in the European Alps. At the plot level, we investigated the impact of leaf phenology and topography on GEDI's accuracy. At the landscape‐scale, we evaluated the ability of GEDIs sample‐based approach to characterize complex mountain landscapes by comparing it to wall‐to‐wall ALS estimates and evaluated the capacity of GEDI to quantify important indicators of ecosystem functions and services (i.e., avalanche protection, habitat provision, carbon storage). Our results revealed only weak to moderate agreement between GEDI and ALS at the plot level (R2 from 0.03 to 0.61), with GEDI uncertainties increasing with slope. At the landscape‐level, however, the agreement between GEDI and ALS was generally high, with R2 values ranging between 0.51 and 0.79. Both GEDI and ALS agreed in identifying areas of high avalanche protection, habitat provision, and carbon storage, highlighting the potential of GEDI for landscape‐scale analyses in the context of ecosystem dynamics and management.

Monitoring and understanding forest dynamics is essential for environmental conservation and management. This is why the Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI) provides countrywide vegetation height maps at a spatial resolution of 0.5 m. Its long update time of 6 years, however, limits the temporal analysis of forest dynamics. This can be improved by using spaceborne remote sensing and deep learning to generate large-scale vegetation height maps in a cost-effective way. In this paper, we present an in-depth analysis of these methods for operational application in Switzerland. We generate annual, countrywide vegetation height maps at a 10-m ground sampling distance for the years 2017–2020 based on Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. In comparison to previous works, we conduct a large-scale and detailed stratified analysis against a precise Airborne Laser Scanning reference dataset. This stratified analysis reveals a close relationship between the model accuracy and the topology, especially slope and aspect. We assess the potential of deep learning-derived height maps for change detection and find that these maps can indicate changes as small as 250 m2. Larger-scale changes caused by a winter storm are detected with an F1-score of 0.77. Our results demonstrate that vegetation height maps computed from satellite imagery with deep learning are a valuable, complementary, cost-effective source of evidence to increase the temporal resolution for national forest assessments.

Abstract European grasslands face strong declines in extent and quality. Many grassland types are priority habitats for national and European conservation strategies. Countrywide, high spatial resolution maps of their distribution are often lacking. Here, we modelled the spatial distribution of 20 permanent grassland habitats at the level of phytosociological alliances across Switzerland at 10x10 m resolution. First, we applied ensemble models to provide distribution maps of the individual habitat types, using training data from various sources. Copernicus Sentinel satellite imagery and variables describing climate, soil and topography were used as predictors. The performance of these models was assessed based on the true skill statistics with a split‐sampling of the data. Second, the individual maps were combined into countrywide maps of the most and second most likely habitat type, respectively, using an expert‐based weighting approach. The performance of the combined map for the most likely habitat type was assessed via an independent testing dataset and a comparison of the predicted habitat‐type proportions with extrapolations from field surveys. Most individual maps had useful to excellent predictive performance (TSS ≥ 0.6). For most grid cells in the combined maps, the most and second most likely habitat types were either ecologically closely related or representing two grassland types along a nutrient gradient. The same was true for omission errors. We found good agreement between the predicted and estimated proportions from field surveys. The area of raised bogs appears to be underestimated, while dry grasslands showed highest agreement. This work highlights the potential of earth observation data at fine spatial and temporal resolution to map habitats at broad scales, thereby providing the foundation for diverse conservation applications. A particular challenge remains in capturing the transition from nutrient‐poor to nutrient‐rich grasslands, which is highly important for biodiversity conservation.

Individual tree detection using airborne laser scanning (ALS) can provide relevant data to complement forest inventory data. Local Maxima-based (LM) methods for individual tree detection are suitable for applications over large extents, but their performance depends on the type of pre-processing of the input data, as well as forest structure and composition. We developed a model that improves LM through statistical modeling using prior knowledge about forest structure. The model selects the optimal canopy height model (CHM) pre-processing filters based on forest structure variables like the dominant canopy height and degree of cover derived from ALS data, the dominant leaf type derived from Sentinel data, and terrain metrics. The model performance was evaluated by assessing tree detection errors for the canopy stem count in National Forest Inventory (NFI) plots in Switzerland (n=5254). For plots with point densities of more than 15 points per square meter and, at most, 6 years between ALS acquisition and inventory (n=2676), the results showed a mean absolute error of 61 stems per ha compared to 174 stems per ha when detecting trees using an unprocessed CHM. The model showed a stable performance for different dominant leaf types (broadleaved-dominated, mixed, coniferous-dominated) and for different degrees of cover. We consider the developed model to be suitable for applications that require data on forest structure or individual tree positions and heights over large areas.

Exacerbated by climate change, Europe has experienced series of hot and dry summer since the beginning of the 21st century. The importance of land conditions became an international concern with a dedicated sustainable development goal (SDG), the SDG 15. It calls for developing and finding innovative solutions to follow and evaluate impacts of changing land conditions induced by various driving forces. In Switzerland, drought risk will significantly increase in the coming decades with severe consequences on agriculture, energy production and vegetation. In this paper, we used a 35-year satellite-derived annual and seasonal times-series of normalized difference water index (NDWI) to follow vegetation water content evolution at different spatial and temporal scales across Switzerland and related them to temperature and precipitation to investigate possible responses of changing climatic conditions. Results indicate that there is a small and slow drying tendency at the country scale with a NDWI mean decreasing slope of −0.22%/year for the 23% significant pixels across Switzerland. This tendency is mostly visible below 2000 m above sea level (m.a.s.l.) and in all biogeographical regions. The Southern Alps regions appear to be more responsive to changing drying conditions with a significant and slight negative NDWI trend (−0.39%/year) over the last 35 years. Moreover, NDWI values are mostly a function of temperature at elevations below the tree line rather than precipitation. Findings suggest that multi-annual and seasonal NDWI can be a valuable indicator to monitor vegetation water content at different scales, but other components such as land cover type and evapotranspiration should be considered to better characterize NDWI variability. Satellite Earth Observations data can provide valuable complementary observations for national statistics on the ecological state of vegetation to support SDG 15 to monitor land affected by drying conditions.

The Environmental Data Portal EnviDat aims to fuse data publication repository functionalities with next-generation web-based environmental geospatial information systems (web-EGIS) and Earth Observation (EO) data cube functionalities. User requirements related to mapping and visualization represent a major challenge for current environmental data portals. The new Cloud Optimized Raster Encoding (CORE) format enables an efficient storage and management of gridded data by applying video encoding algorithms. Inspired by the cloud optimized GeoTIFF (COG) format, the design of CORE is based on the same principles that enable efficient workflows on the cloud, addressing web-EGIS visualization challenges for large environmental time series in geosciences. CORE is a web-native streamable format that can compactly contain raster imagery as a data hypercube. It enables simultaneous exchange, preservation, and fast visualization of time series raster data in environmental repositories. The CORE format specifications are open source and can be used by other platforms to manage and visualize large environmental time series.

National forest inventories (NFI) are important for the assessment of the state and development of forests. Traditional NFIs often rely on statistical sampling approaches as well as expert assessment which may suffer from observer bias and may lack robustness for time series analysis. Over the course of the last decade, close-range remote sensing techniques such as terrestrial and mobile laser scanning became ever more established for the assessment of three-dimensional (3D) forest structure. With the ongoing trend to make the systems smaller, easier to use and more efficient, the pathway is being opened for an operational inclusion of such devices within the framework of an NFI to support the traditional field assessment. Close-range remote sensing could potentially speed up field inventory work as well as increase the area in which certain parameters are assessed. Benchmarks are needed to evaluate the performance of different close-range remote sensing devices and approaches, both in terms of efficiency as well as accuracy. In this study we evaluate the performance of two terrestrial (TLS), one handheld mobile (PLS) and two drone based (UAVLS) laser scanning systems to detect trees and extract the diameter at breast height (DBH) in three plots with a steep gradient in tree and understorey vegetation density. As a novelty, we also tested the acquisition of 3D point-clouds using a low-cost action camera (GoPro) in conjunction with the Structure from Motion (SfM) technique and compared its performance with those of the more costly LiDAR devices. Among the many parameters evaluated in traditional NFIs, the focus of the performance evaluation of this study is set on the automatic tree detection and DBH extraction.The results showed that TLS delivers the highest tree detection rate (TDR) of up to 94.6% under leaf-off and up to 82% under leaf-on conditions and a relative RMSE (rRMSE) for the DBH extraction between 2.5 and 9%, depending on the undergrowth complexity. The tested PLS system (leaf-on) achieved a TDR of up to 80% with an rRMSE between 3.7 and 5.8%. The tested UAVLS systems showed lowest TDR of less than 77% under leaf-off and less than 37% under leaf-on conditions. The novel GoPro approach achieved a TDR of up to 53% under leaf-on conditions. The reduced TDR can be explained by the reduced area coverage due to the chosen circular acquisition path taken with the GoPro approach. The DBH extraction performance on the other hand is comparable to those of the LiDAR devices with an rRMSE between 2 and 9%.Further benchmarks are needed in order to fully assess the applicability of these systems in the framework of an NFI. Especially the robustness under varying forest conditions (seasonality) and over a broader range of forest types and canopy structure has to be evaluated.

Although variations in building activity are a useful indicator of societal well-being and demographic development, historical datasets for larger regions and longer periods are still rare. Here, we present 54,045 annually precise dendrochronological felling dates from historical construction timber from across most of Europe between 1250 and 1699 CE to infer variations in building activity. We use geostatistical techniques to compare spatiotemporal dynamics in past European building activity against independent demographic, economic, social and climatic data. We show that the felling dates capture major geographical patterns of demographic trends, especially in regions with dense data coverage. A particularly strong negative association is found between grain prices and the number of felling dates. In addition, a significant positive association is found between the number of felling dates and mining activity. These strong associations, with well-known macro-economic indicators from pre-industrial Europe, corroborate the use of felling dates as an independent source for exploring large-scale fluctuations of societal well-being and demographic development. Three prominent examples are the building boom in the Hanseatic League region of northeastern Germany during the 13th century, the onset of the Late Medieval Crisis in much of Europe c. 1300, and the cessation of building activity in large parts of central Europe during armed conflicts such as the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648 CE). Despite new insights gained from our European-wide felling date inventory, further studies are needed to investigate changes in construction activity of high versus low status buildings, and of urban versus rural buildings, and to compare those results with a variety of historical documentary sources and natural proxy archives.

Habitat maps at high thematic and spatial resolution and broad extents are fundamental tools for biodiversity conservation, the planning of ecological networks and the management of ecosystem services. To derive a habitat map for Switzerland, we used a composite methodology bringing together the best available spatial data and distribution models. The approach relies on the segmentation and classification of high spatial resolution (1 m) aerial imagery. Land cover data, as well as habitat and species distribution models built on Earth observation data from Sentinel 1 and 2, Landsat, Planetscope and LiDAR, inform the rule-based classification to habitats defined by the hierarchical Swiss Habitat Typology (TypoCH). A total of 84 habitats in 32 groups and 9 overarching classes are mapped in a spatially explicit manner across Switzerland. Validation and plausibility analysis with four independent datasets show that the mapping is broadly plausible, with good accuracy for most habitats, although with lower performance for fine-scale and linear habitats, habitats with restricted geographical distributions and those predominantly characterised by understorey species, especially forest habitats. The resulting map is a vector dataset available for interactive viewing and download from open EnviDat data sharing platform. The methodology is semi-automated to allow for updates over time.

The continual increase of shrub forest in the Swiss Alps over the past few decades impacts biodiversity, forest succession and the protective function of forests. Therefore, up-to-date and area-wide information on its distribution is of great interest. To detect the shrub forest areas for the whole of Switzerland (41,285 km2), we developed an approach that uses Random Forest (RF), bias correction techniques and data from multiple remote sensing sources. Manual aerial orthoimage interpretation of shrub forest areas was conducted in a non-probabilistic way to derive initial training data. The multi-sensor and open access predictor data included digital terrain and vegetation height models obtained from Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) and stereo-imagery, as well as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) backscatter from Sentinel-1 and multispectral imagery from Sentinel-2. To mitigate the expected bias due to the training data sampling strategy, two techniques using RF probability estimates were tested to improve mapping accuracy. 1) an iterative and semi-automated active learning technique was used to generate further training data and 2) threshold-moving related object growing was applied. Both techniques facilitated the production of a shrub forest map for the whole of Switzerland at a spatial resolution of 10 m. An accuracy assessment was performed using independent data covering 7640 regularly distributed National Forest Inventory (NFI) plots. We observed the influence of the bias correction techniques and found higher accuracies after each performed iteration. The Mean Absolute Error (MAE) for the predicted shrub forest proportion was reduced from 6.04% to 2.68% while achieving a Mean Bias Error (MBE) of close to 0. The present study underscores the potential of combining multi-sensor data with bias correction techniques to provide cost-effective and accurate countrywide detection of shrub forest. Moreover, the map complements currently available NFI plot sample point data.

Although trees growing outside forests are less perceived in relation to those inside forests, they are also valuable and serve various functions. The biophysical thresholds of Trees Outside Forests (TOF) were recently defined and standardised by the Global Forest Resources Assessments of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (UNFAO-FRA). With these definitions, standardised mapping of TOF resources became feasible at the national and international level. Here, we aimed to fill the spatial information gap of TOF resources at the national scale with an automated mapping approach based on the UNFAO-FRA definition. The approach was carried out in ArcGIS using adapted UNFAO-FRA biophysical thresholds with routinely acquired countrywide remote sensing data for the whole of Switzerland: a Vegetation Height Model (VHM), a Topographic Landscape Model (TLM Regio) land cover map, and a Forest Mask. Results were validated using stereo-image interpretation data of the Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI), which verified 95%, 55% and 75% of overall, producer’s and user’s accuracy, respectively. Of the five forest production regions in Switzerland, the highest accuracy was achieved in the Central Plateau and the lowest in the Alps, with accuracy generally decreasing with increasing elevation. Omission and commission errors were highly correlated with the vertical and horizontal accuracy of the VHM, and the applied biophysical thresholds caused both types of error. The final TOF map produced with our approach is at the countrywide scale, is superior to existing TOF information, meets UNFAO-FRA management and reporting needs, and enables the derivation of TOF’s biomass, carbon sequestration potential and species distribution for the whole country.

Abstract Light is a key driver of forest biodiversity and functioning. Light regimes beneath tree canopies are mainly driven by the solar angle, topography, and vegetation structure, whose three‐dimensional complexity creates heterogeneous light conditions that are challenging to quantify, especially across large areas. Remotely sensed canopy structure data from airborne laser scanning (ALS) provide outstanding opportunities for advancement in this respect. We used ALS point clouds and a digital terrain model to produce hemispherical photographs from which we derived indices of nondirectional diffuse skylight and direct sunlight reaching the understory. We validated our approach by comparing the performance of these indices, as well as canopy closure (CCl) and canopy cover (CCo), for explaining the light conditions experienced by forest plant communities, as indicated by the Landolt indicator values for light (Llight) from 43 vegetation surveys along an elevational gradient. We applied variation partitioning to analyze how the independent and joint statistical effects of light, macroclimate, and soil on the spatial variation in plant species composition (i.e., turnover, Simpson dissimilarity, βSIM) depend on light approximation methodology. Diffuse light explained Llight best, followed by direct light, CCl and CCo (R2 = .31, .23, .22, and .22, respectively). The combination of diffuse and direct light improved the model performance for βSIM compared with CCl and CCo (R2 = .30, .27 and .24, respectively). The independent effect of macroclimate on βSIM dropped from an R2 of .15 to .10 when diffuse light and direct light were included. The ALS methods presented here outperform conventional approximations of below‐canopy light conditions, which can now efficiently be quantified along entire horizontal and vertical forest gradients, even in topographically complex environments such as mountains. The effect of macroclimate on forest plant communities is prone to be overestimated if local light regimes and associated microclimates are not accurately accounted for.

Historical black-and-white (B&W) aerial images have been recognized as an important source of information for assessing vegetation dynamics. However, the use of these images is limited by the lack of multispectral information, as well as by their varying quality. It is therefore important to study and develop methods that are capable of automatic and accurate classification of these B&W images while reducing the need for tedious manual work. The goal of this study was to assess changes over 30 years in woody vegetation cover along alpine treeline ecotones using B&W aerial images from two time points. A convolutional neural networks model was firstly set up based on three structure classes calculated from Airborne Laser Scanning data using the B&W aerial images from 2010. Then, the model was improved by active addition of training samples of those that were wrongly predicted from historical B&W aerial images from 1980. A comparison with visual image interpretation revealed generally high agreement for the class “dense forest” and lower agreement for the class “group of trees”. The study illustrates that vegetation changes at the treeline ecotone can be detected in order to assess areawide long-term vegetation dynamics at a fine spatial resolution.

The demand for precise mapping and monitoring of forest resources, such as above ground biomass (AGB), has increased rapidly. National accounting and monitoring of AGB requires regularly updated information based on consistent methods. While remote sensing technologies such as airborne laser scanning (ALS) and digital aerial photogrammetry (DAP) have been shown to deliver the necessary 3D spatial data for AGB mapping, the capacity of repeat acquisition, remotely sensed, vegetation structure data for AGB monitoring has received less attention. Here, we use vegetation height models (VHMs) derived from repeat acquisition DAP data (with ALS terrain correction) to map and monitor woody AGB dynamics across Switzerland over 35 years (1983-2017 inclusive), using a linear least-squares regression approach. We demonstrate a consistent relationship between canopy height derived from DAP and field-based NFI measures of woody AGB across four inventory periods. Over the environmentally heterogeneous area of Switzerland, our models have a comparable predictive performance (R2 = 0.54) to previous work predicting AGB based on ALS metrics. Pearson correlation coefficients between measured and predicted changes in woody AGB over time increased with shorter time gaps (< 2 years) between image capture and field-based measurements, ranging between 0.76 and 0.34. A close temporal match between field surveys and remote sensing data acquisition is thus key to reliable mapping and monitoring of AGB dynamics, especially in areas where forest management and natural disturbances trigger relatively fast canopy dynamics. We show that VHMs derived from repeat DAP capture constitute a cost effective and reliable approach to map and monitor changes in woody AGB at a national extent and can provide an important information source for national carbon accounting and monitoring of ecosystem service provisioning.

Mangrove forests in Iran are highly productive and complex ecosystems since they represent the interface between land and sea. They are a unique environment for supporting biodiversity, and they provide direct and indirect benefits to humans. Investigating changes in mangrove forests is essential for ecologists and forest managers to improve the assessment and conservation of natural ecosystems. The goals of the present study include: (I) to evaluate and compare four supervised classification algorithms based on Landsat time series imagery to detect mangrove cover in southern Iran, (II) to detect changes in mangrove cover between 1985, 1998, and 2017; and (III) to compare the four different predictions resulting from the applied classification algorithms. An accuracy assessment was conducted using k-fold cross-validation and independent validation, and differences between the classification techniques were analyzed. Although all four algorithms produced high overall accuracy (ranging from 81% to 93%) and Kappa values (from 0.81 to 0.92), visual comparisons of the predictions revealed that Random Forest (RF) performed best. The results of the change analysis showed that mangrove cover areas decreased by approximately 4% from 1985 to 1998 and then increased by approximately 8.9% from 1998 to 2017. A change detection map shows a decrease in mangrove cover in near coastal regions, such as the Tabl and Gavarzin areas, and an increase in mangrove cover at a distance from the Qeshm coastline that involves open spaces between the trees. Rising water levels and human development are important factors in the decline of mangroves. The findings of this research are useful for the management, restoration and conservation planning of mangrove forest in southern Iran. Photogrammetric measurements of powder-cloud surfaces from large avalanches enable the observation of cloud evolution and dispersion as well as quantification of cloud velocities and powder volumes. Since 2002, a total of six large powder avalanches have been recorded at the test site, Vallée de la Sionne, Switzerland. The high-spatial-resolution photographs, acquired from two different observation angles, allow us to measure the velocity and height of plume-and-cleft structures on the powder-cloud surface. The photogrammetric measurements are supplemented by airborne laser scans of release, entrainment and deposition zones before and after the artificial avalanche release. Even though the precision of the photogrammetric measurements is limited, they are the best data available to test models of powder snow avalanche dynamics. The laser scan data capture initial and boundary conditions while time series of photogrammetric measurements provide insight into mechanisms driving blow-out formation and inertial propagation of the cloud. In this paper we present the experimental measurements and make direct comparisons with model simulations.

Forest mapping is an important source of information for assessing woodland resources and a key issue for any National Forest Inventory (NFI). In the present study, a detailed wall-to-wall forest cover map was generated for all of Switzerland, which meets the requirement of the Swiss NFI forest definition. The workflow is highly automated and based on digital surface models from image-based point clouds of airborne digital sensor data. It fully takes into account the four key criteria of minimum tree height, crown coverage, width, and land use. The forest cover map was validated using almost 10,000 terrestrial and stereo-interpreted NFI plots, which verified 97% agreement overall. This validation implies different categories such as five production regions, altitude, tree type, and distance to the forest border. Overall accuracy was lower at forest borders but increased with increasing distance from the forest border. Commission errors remained stable at around 10%, but increased to 17.6% at the upper tree line. Omission errors were low at 1%–10%, but also increased with altitude and mainly occurred at the upper tree line (19.7%). The main reasons for this are the lower image quality and the NFI height definition for forest which apparently excludes shrub forest from the mask. The presented forest mapping approach is superior to existing products due to its national coverage, high level of detail, regular updating, and implementation of the land use criteria.

Mangrove forests grow in the inter-tidal areas along coastlines, rivers, and tidal lands. They are highly productive ecosystems and provide numerous ecological and economic goods and services for humans. In order to develop programs for applying guided conservation and enhancing ecosystem management, accurate and regularly updated maps on their distribution, extent, and species composition are needed. Recent advances in remote sensing techniques have made it possible to gather the required information about mangrove ecosystems. Since costs are a limiting factor in generating land cover maps, the latest remote sensing techniques are advantageous. In this study, we investigated the potential of combining Sentinel-2 and Worldview-2 data to classify eight land cover classes in a mangrove ecosystem in Iran with an area of 768 km2. The upscaling approach comprises (i) extraction of reflectance values from Worldview-2 images, (ii) segmentation based on spectral and spatial features, and (iii) wall-to-wall prediction of the land cover based on Sentinel-2 images. We used an upscaling approach to minimize the costs of commercial satellite images for collecting reference data and to focus on freely available satellite data for mapping land cover classes of mangrove ecosystems. The approach resulted in a 65.5% overall accuracy and a kappa coefficient of 0.63, and it produced the highest accuracies for deep water and closed mangrove canopy cover. Mapping accuracies improved with this approach, resulting in medium overall accuracy even though the user’s accuracy of some classes, such as tidal zone and shallow water, was low. Conservation and sustainable management in these ecosystems can be improved in the future.

Mapping and monitoring agricultural land-use intensity (LUI) changes are essential for understanding their effects on biodiversity. Current land-use models provide a rather coarse spatial resolution, while in-situ measurements of LUI cover only a limited extent and are time-consuming and expensive. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of using habitat type, topo-climatic, economic output, and remote-sensing data to map LUI at a high spatial resolution. To accomplish this, we first rated the habitat types across the agricultural landscape in terms of the amount and frequency of fertiliser input, pesticide input, ploughing, grazing, mowing, harvesting, and biomass output. We consolidated these ratings into one LUI index per habitat type that we then related to topo-climatic, economic output, and remote-sensing predictors. The results showed that the LUI index was strongly related to plant indicator values for mowing tolerance and soil nutrient content and to aerial nitrogen deposition, and thus, is an adequate index. Topo-climatic, and, to a smaller extent, economic output and remote-sensing predictors, proved suitable for mapping LUI. Large- to medium-scale patterns are explained by topo-climatic predictors, while economic output predictors explain medium-scale patterns and remote-sensing predictors explain local-scale patterns. With the fine-scale LUI map produced from this study, it is now possible to estimate within unvarying land-use classes, the effect on agrobiodiversity of an increase in LUI on fertile and accessible lands and of a decrease of LUI by the abandonment of marginal agricultural lands, and thus, provide a valuable base for understanding the effects of LUI on biodiversity. Due to the worldwide availability of remote-sensing and climate data, our methodology can be easily applied to other countries where habitat-type data are available. Given their low explanatory power, economic output variables may be omitted if not available.

Secondary forest succession on abandoned agricultural land has played a significant role in land cover changes in Europe over the past several decades. However, it is difficult to quantify over large areas. In this paper, we present a conceptual framework for mapping forest succession patterns using vegetation structure information derived from LiDAR data supported by national topographic vector data. This work was performed in the Szczawnica commune in the Polish Carpathians. Using object-based image analysis segments of no vegetation, and sparse/dense low/medium/high vegetation were distinguished and subsequently compared to the national topographic dataset to delineate agricultural land that is covered by vegetation, which indicates secondary succession on abandoned fields. The results showed that 18.7% of the arable land and 40.4% of grasslands, that is 31.0% of the agricultural land in the Szczawnica commune, may currently be experiencing secondary forest succession. The overall accuracy of the approach was assessed using georeferenced terrestrial photographs and was found to be 95.0%. The results of this study indicate that the proposed methodology can potentially be applied in large-scale mapping of secondary forest succession patterns on abandoned land in mountain areas.

Surface models provide key knowledge of the 3-d structure of forests. Aerial stereo imagery acquired during routine mapping campaigns covering the whole of Switzerland (41,285 km2), offers a potential data source to calculate digital surface models (DSMs). We present an automated workflow to generate a nationwide DSM with a resolution of 1 × 1 m based on photogrammetric image matching. A canopy height model (CHM) is derived in combination with an existing digital terrain model (DTM). ADS40/ADS80 summer images from 2007 to 2012 were used for stereo matching, with ground sample distances (GSD) of 0.25 m in lowlands and 0.5 m in high mountain areas. Two different image matching strategies for DSM calculation were applied: one optimized for single features such as trees and for abrupt changes in elevation such as steep rocks, and another optimized for homogeneous areas such as meadows or glaciers. The country was divided into 165,500 blocks, which were matched independently using an automated workflow. The completeness of successfully matched points was high, 97.9%. To test the accuracy of the derived DSM, two reference data sets were used: (1) topographic survey points (n = 198) and (2) stereo measurements (n = 195,784) within the framework of the Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI), in order to distinguish various land cover types. An overall median accuracy of 0.04 m with a normalized median absolute deviation (NMAD) of 0.32 m was found using the topographic survey points. The agreement between the stereo measurements and the values of the DSM revealed acceptable NMAD values between 1.76 and 3.94 m for forested areas. A good correlation (Pearson’s r = 0.83) was found between terrestrially measured tree height (n = 3109) and the height derived from the CHM. Optimized image matching strategies, an automatic workflow and acceptable computation time mean that the presented approach is suitable for operational usage at the nationwide extent. The CHM will be used to reduce estimation errors of different forest characteristics in the Swiss NFI and has high potential for change detection assessments, since an aerial stereo imagery update is available every six years.

Direct assessment of forest regeneration from remote sensing data is a previously little-explored problem. This is due to several factors which complicate object detection of small trees in the understory. Most existing studies are based on airborne laser scanning (ALS) data, which often has insufficient point densities in the understory forest layers. The present study uses plot-based terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and the survey design was similar to traditional forest inventory practices. Furthermore, a framework of methods was developed to solve the difficulties of detecting understory trees for quantifying regeneration in temperate montane forest. Regeneration is of special importance in our montane study area, since large parts are declared as protection forest against alpine natural hazards. Close to nature forest structures were tackled by separating 3D tree stem detection from overall tree segmentation. In support, techniques from 3D mathematical morphology, Hough transformation and state-of-the-art machine learning were applied. The methodical framework consisted of four major steps. These were the extraction of the tree stems, the estimation of the stem diameters at breast height (DBH), the image segmentation into individual trees and finally, the separation of two groups of regeneration. All methods were fully automated and utilized volumetric 3D image information which was derived from the original point cloud. The total amount of regeneration was split into established regeneration, consisting of trees with a height > 130 cm in combination with a DBH < 12 cm and unestablished regeneration, consisting of trees with a height < 130 cm. Validation was carried out against field-based expert estimates of percentage ground cover, differentiating seven classes that were similar to those used by forest inventory. The mean absolute error (MAE) of our method for established regeneration was 1.11 classes and for unestablished regeneration only 0.27 classes. Considering the metrical distances between the class centres, the MAE amounted 8.08% for established regeneration and 2.23% for unestablished regeneration.

Digital surface models (DSMs) are widely used in forest science to model the forest canopy. Stereo pairs of very high resolution satellite and digital aerial images are relatively new and their absolute accuracy for DSM generation is largely unknown. For an assessment of these input data two DSMs based on a WorldView-2 stereo pair and a ADS80 DSM were generated with photogrammetric instruments. Rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs) are defining the orientation of the WorldView-2 satellite images, which can be enhanced with ground control points (GCPs). Thus two WorldView-2 DSMs were distinguished: a WorldView-2 RPCs-only DSM and a WorldView-2 GCP-enhanced RPCs DSM. The accuracy of the three DSMs was estimated with GPS measurements, manual stereo-measurements, and airborne laser scanning data (ALS). With GCP-enhanced RPCs the WorldView-2 image orientation could be optimised to a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.56 m in planimetry and 0.32 m in height. This improvement in orientation allowed for a vertical median error of −0.24 m for the WorldView-2 GCP-enhanced RPCs DSM in flat terrain. Overall, the DSM based on ADS80 images showed the highest accuracy of the three models with a median error of 0.08 m over bare ground. As the accuracy of a DSM varies with land cover three classes were distinguished: herb and grass, forests, and artificial areas. The study suggested the ADS80 DSM to best model actual surface height in all three land cover classes, with median errors < 1.1 m. The WorldView-2 GCP-enhanced RPCs model achieved good accuracy, too, with median errors of −0.43 m for the herb and grass vegetation and −0.26 m for artificial areas. Forested areas emerged as the most difficult land cover type for height modelling; still, with median errors of −1.85 m for the WorldView-2 GCP-enhanced RPCs model and −1.12 m for the ADS80 model, the input data sets evaluated here are quite promising for forest canopy modelling.

This work focuses on the accuracy estimation of canopy height models (CHMs) derived from image matching of Pléiades stereo imagery over forested mountain areas. To determine the height above ground and hence canopy height in forest areas, we use normalised digital surface models (nDSMs), computed as the differences between external high-resolution digital terrain models (DTMs) and digital surface models (DSMs) from Pléiades image matching. With the overall goal of testing the operational feasibility of Pléiades images for forest monitoring over mountain areas, two questions guide this work whose answers can help in identifying the optimal acquisition planning to derive CHMs. Specifically, we want to assess (1) the benefit of using tri-stereo images instead of stereo pairs, and (2) the impact of different viewing angles and topography. To answer the first question, we acquired new Pléiades data over a study site in Canton Ticino (Switzerland), and we compare the accuracies of CHMs from Pléiades tri-stereo and from each stereo pair combination. We perform the investigation on different viewing angles over a study area near Ljubljana (Slovenia), where three stereo pairs were acquired at one-day offsets. We focus the analyses on open stable and on tree covered areas. To evaluate the accuracy of Pléiades CHMs, we use CHMs from aerial image matching and airborne laser scanning as reference for the Ticino and Ljubljana study areas, respectively. For the two study areas, the statistics of the nDSMs in stable areas show median values close to the expected value of zero. The smallest standard deviation based on the median of absolute differences (σMAD) was 0.80 m for the forward-backward image pair in Ticino and 0.29 m in Ljubljana for the stereo images with the smallest absolute across-track angle (−5.3°). The differences between the highest accuracy Pléiades CHMs and their reference CHMs show a median of 0.02 m in Ticino with a σMAD of 1.90 m and in Ljubljana a median of 0.32 m with a σMAD of 3.79 m. The discrepancies between these results are most likely attributed to differences in forest structure, particularly tree height, density, and forest gaps. Furthermore, it should be taken into account that temporal vegetational changes between the Pléiades and reference data acquisitions introduce additional, spurious CHM differences. Overall, for narrow forward–backward angle of convergence (12°) and based on the used software and workflow to generate the nDSMs from Pléiades images, the results show that the differences between tri-stereo and stereo matching are rather small in terms of accuracy and completeness of the CHM/nDSMs. Therefore, a small angle of convergence does not constitute a major limiting factor. More relevant is the impact of a large across-track angle (19°), which considerably reduces the quality of Pléiades CHMs/nDSMs.

Grassland use intensity is a topic of growing interest worldwide, as grasslands are integral in supporting biodiversity, food production, and regulating of the global carbon cycle. Data available for characterizing grasslands management are largely descriptive and collected from laborious field campaigns or questionnaires. The recent launch of the Sentinel-2 earth monitoring constellation provides new possibilities for high temporal and spatial resolution remote sensing data covering large areas. This study aims to evaluate the potential of a time series of Sentinel-2 data for mapping of mowing frequency in the region of Canton Aargau, Switzerland. We tested two cloud masking processes and three spatial mapping units (pixels, parcel polygons and shrunken parcel polygons), and investigated how missing data influence the ability to accurately detect and map grassland management activity. We found that more than 40% of the study area was mown before 15 June, while the remaining part was either mown later, or was not mown at all. The highest accuracy for detection of mowing events was achieved using additional clouds masking and size reduction of parcels, which allowed correct detection of 77% of mowing events. Additionally, we found that using only standard cloud masking leads to significant overestimation of mowing events, and that the detection based on sparse time series does not fully correspond to key events in the grass growth season.

Although wall-to-wall, accurate, and up-to-date forest composition maps at the stand level are a fundamental input for many applications, ranging from global environmental issues to local forest management planning, countrywide mapping approaches on the tree type level remain rare. This paper presents and validates an innovative remote sensing based approach for a countrywide mapping of broadleaved and coniferous trees in Switzerland with a spatial resolution of 3 m. The classification approach incorporates a random forest classifier, explanatory variables from multispectral aerial imagery and a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) from Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) data, digitized training polygons and independent validation data from the National Forest Inventory (NFI). The methodological workflow was optimized for an area of 41,285 km2 that is characterized by temperate forests within a complex topography. Whereas high model overall accuracies (0.99) and kappa (0.98) were achieved, the comparison of the tree type map with independent NFI data revealed significant deviations that are related to underestimations of broadleaved trees (median of −3.17%). Constraints of the tree type mapping approach are mostly related to the acquisition date and time of the imagery and the topographic (negative) effects on the prediction. A comparison with the most recent High Resolution Layers (HRL) forest 2012 from the European Environmental Agency revealed that the tree type map is superior regarding spatial resolution, level of detail and accuracy. The high-quality map achieved with the approach presented here is of great value for optimizing forest management and planning activities and is also an important information source for applications outside the forestry sector.
