The high amount of surfactant needed to formulate a bicontinuous microemulsion is a limiting factor for industrial usage of these systems. Commercially available triblock copolymers can be obtained in high amounts. Here, we show the influence of size and composition of different poly(ethyleneoxide)-poly(propyleneoxide)-poly(ethyleneoxide) triblock copolymer surfactants (Pluronics) on a technical grade sugar surfactant microemulsion. The so-called efficiency boosting can also be realized in such technical grade systems. The resulting efficiency boosting is studied systematically with regard to the impact of the polymer size and the composition of the system.

We study the diffusion of an enhanced green fluorescent protein (GFP+) in bicontinuous sugar-surfactant based microemulsions. The size of the water domains in such systems is controlled by changes of the oil-to-water ratio. Hence, microemulsions allow to produce confinement effects in a controlled way. At high water content the protein is found to exhibit Fickian diffusion. Decreasing the water domain size leads to a slowing down of the protein diffusion and sub-diffusive behavior is obtained on the scale observed by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. Further decrease of the water domain size finally nearly fixes the GFP+ in these domains and forces it to increasingly follow the breathing mode of the microemulsion matrix.

In the present contribution, we evaluate the efficiency of eco-friendly microemulsions to decontaminate solid surfaces by monitoring the extraction of non-toxic simulants of sulfur mustard out of model surfaces. The extraction process of the non-toxic simulants has been monitored by means of spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques. The kinetics of the removal process was analyzed by different empirical models. Based on the analysis of the kinetics, we can assess the influence of the amounts of oil and water and the microemulsion structure on the extraction process. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. The present contribution presents a microemulsion system containing cosmetic oil and sugar surfactant and the enzyme diisopropyl fluorophosphatase (DFPase) as active agent for the decontamination of human skin. The bicontinuous structure and the physical properties of the microemulsion are characterized by dynamic light scattering and small angle neutron scattering. The DFPase from the squid Loligo vulgaris is catalyzing the hydrolysis of highly toxic organophosphates. The effect of the enzyme on the structure of the microemulsion is investigated. Moreover, the enzyme/microemulsion system is also studied with respect to its activity using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy leading to promising results. The enzyme diisopropyl fluorophosphatase (DFPase) from the squid Loligo vulgaris is of great interest because of its ability to catalyze the hydrolysis of highly toxic organophosphates. In this work, the enzyme structure in solution (native state) was studied by use of different scattering methods. The results are compared with those from hydrodynamic model calculations based on the DFPase crystal structure. Bicontinuous microemulsions made of sugar surfactants are discussed as host systems for the DFPase. The microemulsion remains stable in the presence of the enzyme, which is shown by means of scattering experiments. Moreover, activity assays reveal that the DFPase still has high activity in this complex reaction medium. To complement the scattering experiments cryo-SEM was also employed to study the microemulsion structure.

Triblock terpolymers exhibit a rich self-organization behavior including the formation of fascinating cylindrical core-shell structures with a phase separated corona. After crystallization-induced self-assembly of polystyrene-block-polyethylene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) triblock terpolymers (abbreviated as SEMs = Styrene-Ethylene-Methacrylates) from solution, worm-like core-shell micelles with a patchy corona of polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) were observed by transmission electron microscopy. However, the solution structure is still a matter of debate. Here, we present a method to distinguish in situ between a Janus-type (two faced) and a patchy (multiple compartments) configuration of the corona. To discriminate between both models the scattering intensity must be determined mainly by one corona compartment. Contrast variation in small-angle neutron scattering enables us to focus on one compartment of the worm-like micelles. The results validate the existence of the patchy structure also in solution.
