The rapid growth of pharmaceutical refrigerated logistics poses sustainability challenges, including elevated costs, energy consumption, and resource inefficiency. Collaborating multiple depots can enhance logistics efficiency when standalone distribution centers have limited transport resources, i.e., refrigerated vehicles. However, the sustainable benefits and performance across different strategies remain unexplored. This study fills this research gap by addressing a refrigerated pharmaceutical routing problem. While many collaborative strategies prioritize economic and environmental benefits, our approach highlights a vital social indicator: maintaining vehicle flow equilibrium at each depot during collaboration. This ensures the stability of transport resources for all stakeholders, promoting sustainable collaborative logistics. The problem is formulated as a multi-depot vehicle routing problem with time windows (MDVRPTW). Three collaborative strategies using Clustering VRP (CLUVRP) and improved Open VRP (OVRP) are proposed and compared. We develop two approaches to address traditional OVRP limitations in ensuring vehicle flow equilibrium at each depot. Our models consider perishable pharmaceuticals and time-dependent travel speeds. Three hybrid heuristics based on Simulated Annealing and Variable Neighborhood Search (SAVNS) are proposed and evaluated for efficacy. Computational experiments and a case study demonstrate distinct sustainable benefits across various strategies, offering valuable insights for decision-makers in the refrigerated logistics market.

In many fault-detection problems, its objective lies in discerning all the defective items from a set of $n$ items with a binary characteristic by utilizing the minimum number of tests. Group testing (i.e., testing a subset of items with a single test) plays a pivotal role in classifying a large population of items. We study a central problem in the combinatorial group testing model for the situation where the number $d$ of defectives is unknown in advance. Let $M(d,n)=\min_{\alpha}M_\alpha(d|n)$, where $M_\alpha(d|n)$ is the maximum number of tests required by an algorithm $\alpha$ for the problem. An algorithm $\alpha$ is called a $c$\emph{-competitive algorithm} if there exist constants $c$ and $a$ such that for $0\le d < n$, $M_{\alpha}(d|n)\le cM(d,n)+a$. We design a new adaptive algorithm with competitive constant $c \le 1.431$, thus pushing the competitive ratio below the best-known one of $1.452$. This work studies the interaction between colliding plasma jets to understand regimes in which jet merging results in shock formation versus regimes in which the shock formation is mitigated due to the collisionless interpenetration of the jets. A kinetic model is required for this study because fluid models will always produce a shock upon the collision of plasma jets. The continuum-kinetic, Vlasov-Maxwell-Dougherty model with one velocity dimension is used to accurately capture shock heating, along with a novel coupling with a moment equation to evolve perpendicular temperature for computational efficiency. As a result, this relatively inexpensive simulation can be used for detailed scans of the parameter space towards predictions of shocked versus shock-mitigated regimes, which is of interest for several fusion concepts such as plasma-jet-driven magneto-inertial fusion (PJMIF), high-energy-density plasmas, astrophysical phenomena, and other laboratory plasmas. The initial results obtained using this approach are in agreement with the preliminary outcomes of the Plasma Liner Experiment (PLX).

Nano-indentation based on, e.g., atomic force microscopy (AFM), can measure single cell elasticity with high spatial resolution and sensitivity, but relating the data to cell mechanical properties depends on modeling that requires knowledge about the local contact between the indentation tip and the material, which is unclear in most cases. Here we use the orientation sensing by nitrogen-vacancy centers in nanodiamonds to chart the non-local deformation of fixed HeLa cells induced by AFM indentation, providing data for studying cell mechanics without requiring detailed knowledge about the local contact. The competition between the elasticity and capillarity on the cells is observed. We show that the apparent elastic moduli of the cells would have been overestimated if the capillarity is not considered (as in most previous studies using local depth-loading data). We also find reduction of both elastic moduli and surface tensions due to depolymerization of the actin cytoskeleton structure. Shallow nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are promising for nano-magnetometry for they can be placed proximate to targets. To study the intrinsic magnetic properties, zero-field magnetometry is desirable. However, for shallow NV centers under zero field, the strain near diamond surfaces would cause level anti-crossing between the spin states, leading to clock transitions whose frequencies are insensitive to magnetic signals. Furthermore, the charge noises from the surfaces would induce extra spin decoherence and hence reduce the magnetic sensitivity. Here we demonstrate that the relatively strong hyperfine coupling (130 MHz) from a first-shell 13C nuclear spin can provide an effective bias field to an NV center spin so that the clock-transition condition is broken and the charge noises are suppressed. The hyperfine bias enhances the dc magnetic sensitivity by a factor of 22 in our setup. With the charge noises suppressed by the strong hyperfine field, the ac magnetometry under zero field also reaches the limit set by decoherence due to the nuclear spin bath. In addition, the 130 MHz splitting of the NV center spin transitions allows relaxometry of magnetic noises simultaneously at two well-separated frequencies (~2.870 +/- 0.065 GHz), providing (low-resolution) spectral information of high-frequency noises under zero field. The hyperfine-bias enhanced zero-field magnetometry can be combined with dynamical decoupling to enhance single-molecule magnetic resonance spectroscopy and to improve the frequency resolution in nanoscale magnetic resonance imaging.

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are promising quantum sensors for their long spin coherence time under ambient conditions. However, their spin resonances are relatively insensitive to non-magnetic parameters such as temperature. A magnetic-nanoparticle-nanodiamond hybrid thermometer, where the temperature change is converted to the magnetic field variation near the Curie temperature, was demonstrated to have enhanced temperature sensitivity (11 mK Hz^{-1/2}) [Phys. Rev. X 8, 011042 (2018)], but the sensitivity was limited by the large spectral broadening of ensemble spins in nanodiamonds. To overcome this limitation, here we showed an improved design of a hybrid nanothermometer using a single NV center in a diamond nanopillar coupled with a single magnetic nanoparticle of copper-nickel alloy, and demonstrated a temperature sensitivity of 76 uK Hz^{-1/2}. This hybrid design enabled detection of 2 millikelvins temperature changes with temporal resolution of 5 milliseconds. The objective of this White Paper submitted to ESA's Voyage 2050 call is to get a more holistic knowledge of the dynamics of the Martian plasma system from its surface up to the undisturbed solar wind outside of the induced magnetosphere. This can only be achieved with coordinated multi-point observations with high temporal resolution as they have the scientific potential to track the whole dynamics of the system (from small to large scales), and they constitute the next generation of Mars' exploration as it happened at Earth few decades ago. This White Paper discusses the key science questions that are still open at Mars and how they could be addressed with coordinated multipoint missions. The main science questions are: (i) How does solar wind driving impact on magnetospheric and ionospheric dynamics? (ii) What is the structure and nature of the tail of Mars' magnetosphere at all scales? (iii) How does the lower atmosphere couple to the upper atmosphere? (iv) Why should we have a permanent in-situ Space Weather monitor at Mars? Each science question is devoted to a specific plasma region, and includes several specific scientific objectives to study in the coming decades. Information of material deformation upon loading is critical to evaluate mechanical properties of materials in general, and key to understand fundamental mechano-stimuli induced response of live systems in particular. Conventionally, such information is obtained at macroscopic scale about averaged properties, which misses the important details of deformation at individual structures; or at nanoscale with localized properties accessed, which misses the information of deformation at locations away from the force-loading positions. Here we demonstrate that an integration of nanodiamond orientation sensing and AFM nanoindentation offers a complementary approach to the nonlocal reconstruction of material deformation. This approach features a 5 nm precision in the loading direction and a sub-hundred nanometer lateral resolution. Using this tool, we mapped out the deformation of a PDMS thin film in air and that of the gelatin microgel particles in water, with precision high enough to disclose the significance of the surface/interface effects in the material deformation.
