Abstract Exposure to certain heavy metals has been demonstrated to be associated with a higher risk of preterm birth (PTB). However, studies focused on the effects of other metal mixtures were limited. A nested case‒control study enrolling 94 PTB cases and 282 controls was conducted. Metallic elements were detected in maternal plasma collected in the first trimester using inductively coupled plasma‒mass spectrometry. The effect of maternal exposure on the risk of PTB was investigated using logistic regression, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator, restricted cubic spline (RCS), quantile g computation (QGC) and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR). Vanadium (V) and arsenic (As) were positively associated with PTB risk in the logistic model, and V remains positively associated in the multi‐exposure logistic model. QGC analysis determined V (69.42%) and nickel (Ni) (70.30%) as the maximum positive and negative contributors to the PTB risk, respectively. BKMR models further demonstrated a positive relationship between the exposure levels of the mixtures and PTB risk, and V was identified as the most important independent variable among the elements. RCS analysis showed an inverted U‐shape effect of V and gestational age, and plasma V more than 2.18 μg/L was considered a risk factor for shortened gestation length. Exposure to metallic elements mixtures consisting of V, As, cobalt, Ni, chromium and manganese in the first trimester was associated with an increased risk of PTB, and V was considered the most important factor in the mixtures in promoting the incidence of PTB.

Understanding the impact of climate and land use change on soil erosion is particularly important to the development and management of ecosystems. The purpose of this research was to differentiate the impacts of climate and land use alterations on soil erosion by using the InVEST model in the Anning River basin. The findings indicated a rise in average soil erosion from 42.78 t ha−1·a−1 to 49.84 t ha−1·a−1 over the decade from 2010 to 2020, with climate change accounting for 99.71% of the increase and land use change contributing 0.28%. The findings also indicated that the process of urbanization and the implementation of the Returning Grain to Forestry and Grass (RGFG) strategy were effective in decreasing soil erosion by 1.29 t ha−1·a−1 and 6.60 t ha−1·a−1, respectively. Four management measures were developed based on our results. The results of this study are not only of great significance for the environmental protection of a specific region, but also provide references for the mitigation of soil erosion in other regions of the world.

Fractures play a crucial role in tight sandstone gas reservoirs with low permeability and low effective porosity. If open, they not only significantly increase the permeability of the reservoir but also serve as channels connecting the storage space. Among numerous fracture identification methods, seismic data provide unique advantages for fracture identification owing to the provision of three-dimensional information between wells. How to accurately identify the development of fractures in geological bodies between wells using seismic data is a major challenge. In this study, a tight sandstone gas reservoir in the Kuqa Basin (China) was used as an example for identifying reservoir fractures using deep-learning-based method. First, a feasibility analysis is necessary. Intersection analysis between the fracture density and seismic attributes (the characteristics of frequency, amplitude, phase, and other aspects of seismic signals) indicates that there is a correlation between the two when the fracture density exceeds a certain degree. The development of fractures is closely related to the lithology and structure, indirectly affecting differences in seismic attributes. This indicates that the use of seismic attributes for fracture identification is feasible and reasonable. Subsequently, the effective fracture density data obtained from imaging logging were used as label data, and the optimized seismic attribute near the well data were used as feature data to construct a fracture identification sample dataset. Based on a feed-forward neural network algorithm combined with natural fracture density and effectiveness control factor constraints, a trained identification model was obtained. The identification model was applied to seismic multi-attribute data for the entire work area. Finally, the accuracy of the results from the training, testing, and validation datasets were used to determine the effectiveness of the method. The relationship between the fracture identification results and the location of the fractures in the target reservoir was used to determine the reasonableness of the results. The results indicate that there is a certain relationship between multiple seismic attributes and fracture development, which can be established using deep learning models. Furthermore, the deep-learning-based seismic data fracture identification method can effectively identify fractures in the three-dimensional space of reservoirs.

Objective Both the selective thoracic fusion (STF) and nonselective thoracic fusion (NSTF) are treatments for Lenke 1C adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). To date, the impacts of the two surgical strategies on patients' long‐term quality of life remain unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the long‐term effects of STF/NSTF on the quality of life in Lenke 1C AIS patients through a 4–10‐year follow‐up. Methods From January 2011 to April 2018, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a retrospective single‐center study of 75 surgical patients with Lenke 1C curves was performed (n = 75). They all underwent posterior fusion, and patients were divided into the selective thoracic fusion (STF) group (n = 42) and the nonselective thoracic fusion (NSTF) group (n = 33) based on their surgical approach. All participants received the survey of the visual analogue scale (VAS), SRS30, SF12, and Oswestry disability index (ODI) scales. Patients' gender, age, body mass index (BMI), surgical approach (STF/NSTF), surgical segments (UIV and LIV), follow‐up time, complications, preoperative, postoperative, and last follow‐up Cobb angles, and health‐related quality of life (HRQOL) outcomes were collected, and analyzed through the Shapiro‐Wilks test, Wilcoxon rank‐sum test, t‐test, and χ2 test. Results The mean follow‐up of the entire cohort was 73 ± 5.6 months. The lumbar Cobb angle in the STF group improved from 31.8 ± 6.5° to 11.5 ± 5.1° after the operation and 10.3 ± 6.9° at the last follow‐up. The postoperative correction rate of the lumbar curve was 63.8%, which increased to 67.7% at the last follow‐up. In the NSTF group, the lumbar Cobb angle improved from 34.3 ± 11.3° to 4.3 ± 3.7° after the operation, and was 5.1 ± 3.1° at the last follow‐up. The postoperative correction rate of the lumbar curve was 87.4%, and 85.1% at the last follow‐up. At the last follow‐up, the STF group had higher overall HRQOL scores than the NSTF group, and there were statistically differences between the different groups (STF/NSTF) in SRS‐30‐Mental health (p = 0.03), SRS‐30‐Satisfaction with management (p = 0.02), SRS‐30‐Pain (p = 0.03), ODI (p = 0.01), SF‐12 PCS (p = 0.03), VAS back pain (p = 0.005) and VAS leg pain (p = 0.001). No statistically differences were found in SF12 MCS, SRS‐30‐Self‐image/Appearance and SRS‐30 Function/activity. Conclusion After 4–10 years of follow‐up, we found that the STF group achieved satisfactory correction results, and compared with the NSTF group, their overall HRQOL scores were higher, especially in terms of pain and satisfaction, where the STF group shows a significant advantage.

In graph theory, the problem of finding minimum vertex separator (MVS) is a classic NP-hard problem, and it plays a key role in a number of important applications in practice. The real-world massive graphs are of very large size, which calls for effective approximate methods, especially heuristic search algorithms. In this article, we present a simple yet effective heuristic search algorithm dubbed HSMVS for solving MVS on real-world massive graphs. Our HSMVS algorithm is developed on the basis of an efficient construction procedure and a simple yet effective vertex-selection heuristic. Experimental results on a large number of real-world massive graphs present that HSMVS is able to find much smaller vertex separators than three effective heuristic search algorithms, indicating the effectiveness of HSMVS. Further empirical analyses confirm the effectiveness of the underlying components in our proposed algorithm.

Objectives Cage subsidence (CS) has been reported to be one of the most common complications following oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF). To reduce the incidence of CS and improve intervertebral fusion rates, anterolateral fixation (AF) has been gradually proposed. However, the incidence of CS in patients with oblique lumbar interbody fusion combined with anterolateral fixation (OLIF‐AF) is still controversial. Additionally, there is a lack of consensus regarding the optimal placement of screws for OLIF‐AF, and the impact of screw placement on the incidence of CS has yet to be thoroughly investigated and validated. The objective of this investigation was to examine the correlation between screw placements and CS and to establish an optimized approach for implantation in OLIF‐AF. Methods A retrospective cohort study was undertaken. From October 2017 to December 2020, a total of 103 patients who received L4/5 OLIF‐AF for lumbar spinal stenosis or spondylolisthesis or degenerative instability in our department were followed up for more than 12 months. Demographic and radiographic data of these patients were collected. Additionally, screw placement related parameters, including trajectory and position, were measured by anterior–posterior X‐ray and axial CT. Analysis was done by chi‐square, independent t‐test, univariable and multivariable binary logistic regression to explore the correlation between screw placements and CS. Finally, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the predictive ability of screw placement‐related parameters. PurposeTo further identify the effectiveness of trans-nasal humidified rapid insufflation ventilatory exchange (THRIVE) for pre- and apneic oxygenation during the anesthesia induction by comparison to facemask ventilation (FMV) based on current available evidence.MethodsMedline, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and CNKI databases were searched from inception to December 22, 2023 for available randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Primary outcomes were PaO2 and PaCO2 after intubation and safe apnoea time. Secondary outcomes included the O2 desaturation, end expiratory carbon dioxide (EtCO2) and complications. The effect measures for continuous and categorical outcomes were separately the mean difference (MD) and relative risk (RR) with 95% confidence interval.ResultsTwelve RCTs with 403 patients in the THRIVE group and 401 patients in th FMV group were included. Pooled results demonstrated that the PaO2 after intubation was significantly higher (MD = 82.90mmHg, 95% CI: 12.25~153.54mmHg, P = 0.02) and safe apnoea time (MD = 103.81s, 95% CI: 42.07~165.56s, P = 0.001) was longer in the THRIVE group. Besides, the incidence rate of O2 desaturation (RR = 0.28, 95% CI: 0.12-0.66, P = 0.004) and gastric insufflation (RR = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.13-0.49, PConclusionBased on current evidence, THRIVE manifested better effectiveness representing as improved oxygenation, prolonged safe apnoea time and decreased risk of complications compared to standard FMV in surgical patients. Therefore, THRIVE could be served as a novel and valuable oxygenation technology for patients during anesthesia induction.

Tunnel excavation induces the stress redistribution of surrounding rock. In this excavation process, the elastic strain in the rock is quickly released. When the maximum stress on the tunnel lining exceeds the concrete’s load-bearing capacity, it causes cracking of the lining. Comprehensive geophysical exploration methods, including seismic computerized tomography, the high-density electrical method, and the ultrasonic single-plane test, indicated the presence of incomplete distribution of broken rock along the tunnel axis. Based on the geophysical exploration results, a carbon-fiber-strengthened tunnel simulation model was established to analyze the mechanical characteristics of the structure and provide a theoretical basis for sensor deployment. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors were used to measure the stress and strain changes in the second lining concrete after carbon reinforcement. Meanwhile, one temperature sensor was installed in each section to enable temperature compensation. The monitoring results demonstrated that the stress–strain of the second lining fluctuated within a small range, and the lining did not show any crack expansion behavior, which indicated that carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) played an effective role in controlling the structural deformation. Therefore, the combined detection of physical exploration and FBG sensors for the structure provided an effective monitoring method for evaluating tunnel stability.

With the concern for biodiversity conservation and ecological sustainability, the traditional method of assessing conservation management based on single elements such as timber production, stand structure, and forest area is no longer applicable. Especially for China, where the primary goal of national park conservation management is to “protect and maintain the authenticity and integrity of natural ecosystems”, it is necessary to construct a set of indicators that can comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of natural ecosystem conservation management. Therefore, in this study, we take Jiuzhaigou and Giant Panda National Park, in Sichuan, China, as examples, and construct a set of ecological integrity evaluation indices system from the perspective of attributes of forest ecosystems. Initially, we screened the candidate indicators based on the coefficient of variation, distribution range, and redundancy analysis and identified 16 indicators as the evaluation indices of ecological integrity. Next, the model fit and the interrelationship of the components of the ecological integrity model were verified using a combination of structural equation modeling and actual data. The model validation results showed that: (1) CMIN/DF = 1.66, RMSEA = 0.058, GFI = 0.954, and other model fit metrics have reached the best reference standard, indicating that the ecological integrity model overall fit is high. (2) In the parameter estimation results of the model observed and latent variables, the ecological integrity model explained 96%, 85% and 89% of the variance in species composition, stand structure and ecological processes, respectively, indicating that the evaluation indices selected can effectively predict the ecological integrity of forests. In addition, we used the factor loadings in the structural equation model to calculate the weights of the indices and used the weighted sum to calculate the ecological integrity. A one-way ANOVA was conducted to compare the differences among the ecological integrity of forests of different origins, forest types and life forms. The relative importance and linear regression were used to elucidate the main factors affecting forest ecological integrity. The results showed that (1) except for the scrub community, the mean value of forest ecological integrity was >0.45, which was in the middle-to-upper level. (2) the ecological integrity of forests of different origins and different forest types showed a changing pattern: natural forest > plantation forest, mixed forest > pure forest. (3) Stand age and elevation strongly influenced the ecological integrity of forests, with relative contribution rates of 64.54% and 11.88%, respectively.

ObjectivesShanghai witnessed an unprecedented outbreak of COVID-19 and experienced a strict lockdown from March 28, 2022 to May 31, 2022. Most studies to date are on the first lockdown after the outbreak in December 2019. This study aimed to examine the impact of lockdown on delivery and neonatal outcomes among uninfected pregnant women in the new phase of the COVID-19 outbreak.MethodsA retrospective analysis was conducted in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University. Pregnant women without COVID-19 who delivered from March 28, 2022 to May 31, 2022 (lockdown group) and the same period in 2021 (non-lockdown group) were recruited for this study. Logistic regression models and 1 : 1 propensity score matching (PSM) were used to assess the effect of lockdown on delivery outcomes.ResultsA total of 2,962 patients were included in this study, 1,339 of whom were from the lockdown group. Compared with the non-lockdown group, pregnant women giving birth during lockdown had an increased risk of term prelabor rupture of membranes (TPROM) (aOR = 1.253, 95% CI: 1.026–1.530), and decreased risks of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) (aOR = 0.362, 95% CI: 0.216–0.606) and fetal malformation (aOR = 0.309, 95% CI: 0.164–0.582). The risk of large for gestational age (LGA) (aOR = 0.802, 95% CI: 0.648–0.992) and rate of admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) (aOR = 0.722, 95% CI: 0.589–0.885) also significantly declined. After 1 : 1 PSM, the impact of lockdown on the risk of TPROM (aOR = 1.501, 95% CI: 1.083–2.080), PPH (aOR = 0.371, 95% CI: 0.211–0.654), fetal malformation (aOR = 0.332, 95% CI: 0.161–0.684), LGA (aOR = 0.749, 95% CI: 0.594–0.945) and rate of admission to the NICU (aOR = 0.700, 95% CI: 0.564–0.869) all remained. There were no other delivery or neonatal outcomes affected by the lockdown after the COVID-19 outbreak.ConclusionThis study indicated a significant increase in the risk of term PROM, significant decreases in the risk of PPH, fetal malformation and LGA, and a marked decline in the rate of admission to the NICU during Shanghai Lockdown.

As an increasingly prevalent form of human activity, roads drive the taxonomic homogenization of mountain plant assemblages, threatening global biodiversity. However, little is known about how mountain roads impact functional and phylogenetic beta diversity and how these effects are related to taxonomic homogenization. To understand the mechanism of taxonomic homogenization triggered by mountain roads, we used species absence/presence data from 76 plots (2 m*50 m) and values for 12 traits measured on 978 species from the interior and roadside communities in the Qionglai mountain range, one of the temperate regions with the highest plant species richness in the world. We used a structural equation modeling approach (SEM) to consider several surrogates of road disturbance (changes in soil physicochemical properties and the presence or absence of roads) and the causal relationship between three facets of beta diversity (taxonomic beta diversity, TBD; functional beta diversity, FBD and phylogenetic beta diversity, PBD). The results suggest that TBD, FBD and PBD respond inconsistently to mountain roads, despite strong positive correlations between the three facets of plant beta diversity in the study area. Compared with the interior community, the βtotal.tax and βtotal.func of the roadside community decreased by 2.54% and 2.22%, respectively, which were related to the reduction of species and trait richness differences and replacements; however, we did not find the same results when assessing the changes in βtotal.phy, which represents tip-weighted PBD (twPBD). Furthermore, the largest effect of roads on beta diversity was reflected in basal-weighted PBD (bwPBD), which decreased by 9.97%, indicating that those species with fewer extant relatives and longer evolutionary histories are more sensitive to mountain roads. Therefore, it is necessary to take targeted protection measures for ancient species in roadside communities. In addition, we believe that it is still necessary to take measures to prevent the further dispersal of nonnative species, although the presence of non-native species in roadside plots has led to small changes in three facets of beta diversity. There were causal relationships between the three facets of beta diversity, but their intensity and sign different in the SEM of different components of beta diversity (i.e., richness difference and replacement). Our findings suggest that the homogenization of community species composition at the landscape scale arises by a combination of adaptive responses of the functional traits of organisms to environmental consistency (e.g., reduced the differences in soil variables) caused by roads and resorting or reassembly of community clades composition due to environmental filtering. These results contribute to our comprehensive understanding of the impact of mountain roads on plant diversity, which highlights the complex relationship between human pressure and biodiversity loss.

A comprehensive understanding of the effects of mountain roads on plant diversity is critical to finding the most effective solutions for managing this particular driver. Little is known, however, about the simultaneous effects that road have on the multiple facets of biodiversity, although roads are considered to be one of the major disturbances in the Qionglai mountain range. In this study, we analyzed the impact of roads on the multiple facets of plant diversity (taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity) in the study area using Hill numbers by comparing plant diversity between roadside and interior plots at the landscape scale, then, we used linear mixed models to analyze the effect of mountain roads on the multiple facets of plant diversity along an elevational gradient. The results showed that the roadside plots lacked 29.45% of the total number of species with particular functional traits (such as a relatively high specific leaf area (SLA), a relatively low leaf dry matter content (LDMC) and relatively old clades) and exclusively contained 14.62% of the total number of species. Compared with the interior community, the taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity of roadside community decreased by no more than 26.78%, 24.90% and 16.62%, respectively. Taxonomic and functional diversity of dominant and common species showed greater changes to road disturbances, while rare species showed the greatest change in phylogenetic diversity. Taxonomic homogenization of roadside communities was accompanied by functional and phylogenetic homogenization. Additionally, the impact of roads on these three facets of plant diversity showed the characteristics of peak clipping along the elevation gradient. Our findings highlight the negative impact of roads on the taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity of the Qionglai mountain range, as roads promote communities that are more similar in taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic composition, and to a greater extent contributed to compositional evenness. These effects tend to be functionally and phylogenetically non-random, and species in some clades or with some functional traits are at higher risk of loss. Our results are important for the conservation and management of nature reserves, especially for local governments aiming to create new infrastructure to connect natural mountainous areas.

Flavones predominantly accumulate as O- and C-glycosides in kumquat plants. Two catalytic mechanisms of flavone synthase II (FNSII) support the biosynthesis of glycosyl flavones, one involving flavanone 2-hydroxylase (which generates 2-hydroxyflavanones for C-glycosylation) and another involving the direct catalysis of flavanones to flavones for O-glycosylation. However, FNSII has not yet been characterized in kumquats. In this study, we identified two kumquat FNSII genes (FcFNSII-1 and FcFNSII-2), based on transcriptome and bioinformatics analysis. Data from in vivo and in vitro assays showed that FcFNSII-2 directly synthesized apigenin and acacetin from naringenin and isosakuranetin, respectively, whereas FcFNSII-1 showed no detectable catalytic activities with flavanones. In agreement, transient overexpression of FcFNSII-2 in kumquat peels significantly enhanced the transcription of structural genes of the flavonoid-biosynthesis pathway and the accumulation of several O-glycosyl flavones. Moreover, studying the subcellular localizations of FcFNSII-1 and FcFNSII-2 demonstrated that N-terminal membrane-spanning domains were necessary to ensure endoplasmic reticulum localization and anchoring. Protein–protein interaction analyses, using the split-ubiquitin yeast two-hybrid system and bimolecular fluorescence-complementation assays, revealed that FcFNSII-2 interacted with chalcone synthase 1, chalcone synthase 2, and chalcone isomerase-like proteins. The results provide strong evidence that FcFNSII-2 serves as a nucleation site for an O-glycosyl flavone metabolon that channels flavanones for O-glycosyl flavone biosynthesis in kumquat fruits. They have implications for guiding genetic engineering efforts aimed at enhancing the composition of bioactive flavonoids in kumquat fruits.

We analyzed the impact of mountain roads on patterns of species richness and community dissimilarity along elevation gradients with linear mixed-effects models, assessed how non-native/annual species modified these patterns of diversity, and explored changes in the effects of road on plant diversity along topographic gradients through the generalized additive model (GAM). Data analysis showed that (i) species richness for all, native and perennial species was unimodal relative to elevation and peaked at middle elevations; these patterns were modified by colonization of non-native and annual species favored by roads; (ii) mountain roads homogenized community compositions by selective extinction of native perennial species and to a lesser extent by colonization of annuals, rather than by colonization of non-native species; roads did not affect beta diversity response to elevation gradient; and (iii) mountain roads only contributed 8.98 % plant diversity at the landscape level; species richness was affected more by roads than by beta diversity. Montane ecosystems showed strong resilience to the influence of road the at landscape level. We suggest that new roads be planned and constructed on northeast-facing slopes and at lower elevations in order to minimize negative impacts on native plant diversity.

Additional strain increments occur in concrete subject to stress constraints during cold shrinkage, resulting in irregular deformation and reducing the concrete structure’s stability. When an annular concrete structure is subjected to radial pressure, two tensile stress concentration zones will appear at the intersection of the inner wall and the diameter along the pressure direction. When exposed to low temperatures, the total strain in the tensile stress concentration zones is caused by the combined effect of applied stress strain and thermal strain. Then, the thermal strain of the structure can be obtained from the difference between the total strain and the applied stress strain. Gradient cooling was performed after applying radial pressure to the annular concrete using a counterforce device. The applied stress strain and total strain of the tensile stress concentration zones are measured by fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors fixed along the stress direction. According to the measurement results, the thermal strains of the concrete structure under the stress constraint are extracted to analyze the influence of the tensile stress constraint on the thermal strain of the concrete structure. In the temperature range of −40∘C∼20∘C, the thermal strains of the structure under radial pressures of 1500 N, 2000 N, and 3000 N are extracted, respectively. The thermal expansion coefficients are calculated based on the thermal strain of the structure. The free thermal expansion coefficient of concrete structures fluctuates around 11×10−6/∘C. When the temperature is reduced to 10∘C, the difference between the thermal expansion coefficient under the stress constraint and the free thermal expansion coefficient is the largest. When the temperature is reduced to −20∘C, the thermal expansion coefficients under each stress condition are close to the same. The results show that the stress confinement significantly inhibits the cold shrinkage of the concrete structure, and the inhibitory effect is gradually weakened when the temperature decreases.

How can researchers best measure infants' motor experiences in the home? Body position—whether infants are held, supine, prone, sitting, or upright—is an important developmental experience. However, the standard way of measuring infant body position, video recording by an experimenter in the home, can only capture short instances, may bias measurements, and conflicts with physical distancing guidelines resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we introduce and validate an alternative method that uses machine learning algorithms to classify infants' body position from a set of wearable inertial sensors. A laboratory study of 15 infants demonstrated that the method was sufficiently accurate to measure individual differences in the time that infants spent in each body position. Two case studies showed the feasibility of applying this method to testing infants in the home using a contactless equipment drop-off procedure.

Social media platforms increasingly give users the option of ephemerality through settings that delete or hide posted content after a set period of time. Many individuals apply these settings to manage their posting history and, in turn, reduce concerns about self-presentation. Despite the growing popularity of this feature, few studies have empirically explored it. This study examines the Time Limit setting on WeChat Moments as an example and investigates how users using the Time Limit setting differ from nonusers in terms of personal characteristics (demographics, personality traits, psychological factors, and previous behavioral patterns) and social characteristics (audience size and audience diversity). Compared with nonusers, users using Time Limit setting scored significantly higher on posting frequency and privacy setting use and scored significantly lower on audience size. We also examine how personal and social characteristics vary between user groups with different degrees of ephemerality (i.e., low, medium, or high). Our findings show that users using the Time Limit setting who scored higher on measures of life changes, self-monitoring, posting frequency, and audience size and lower on perceived stress were more likely to opt for the low (i.e., 6months) rather than the medium (i.e., 1month) or high (i.e., 3days) degree of ephemerality. Our work contributes to the understanding of ephemerality settings on social media platforms and provides insights that help practitioners design more effective platforms.

In a lidar system, replacing moving components with solid-state devices is highly anticipated to make a reliable and compact lidar system, provided that a substantially large beam area with a large angular extent as well as high angular resolution is assured for the lidar transmitter and receiver. A new quasi-solid-state lidar optical architecture employs a transmitter with a two-dimensional MEMS mirror for fine beam steering at a fraction of the degree of the angular resolution and is combined with a digital micromirror device for wide FOV scanning over 37 degree while sustaining a large aperture area of 140 mm squared. In the receiver, a second digital micromirror device is synchronized to the transmitter DMD, which enables a large FOV receiver. An angular resolution of 0.57°(H) by 0.23° (V) was achieved with 0.588 fps for scanning 1344 points within the field of view.

The hot-spot temperature of a dry-type air-core reactor is a crucial factor that determines the service life of the reactor. Although the environment elevation has a significant influence on the reactor’s heat dissipation performance and hot-spot temperature, studies seldom focus on the temperature distribution for different altitude scenarios. To this end, this paper proposes a temperature field simulation model with multi-parameter coupling constraints based on the laminar–turbulent flow state. The calculation of the temperature field with the hot-spot temperature at different altitudes is finally achieved. The simulation results show that the hot-spot is located at 6.3% from the top of the sixth encapsulated-winding. It also shows that the hot-spot temperature of the reactor increases by 5 K–11 K with the altitude ascending by 1 km. Moreover, the hot-spot temperature of the reactor exceeds the temperature index at an altitude of 3.25 km, which will result in a shortened service life. Fiber Bragg grating temperature sensors are embedded in encapsulated-windings to detect the temperature for verifying the validity of the temperature field model, which could provide critical temperature rise evaluation rules for the operation safety of the dry-type air-core reactor.

Human activities change the natural ecosystem and cause the decline of the intact ecosystem. Establishing an applicable and efficient human activity monitoring indicator system benefits China’s ambitious national park system construction. In this study, we established a refined technique for ecological intactness scores (EIS) and applied it in the area of Giant Panda National Park (GPNP) from 1980 to 2020 by quantifying four types of human interferences including land use and cover change (LUCC), road construction, water reservoir and hydropower construction, and mining. The results show the following: (1) Under the ecological intactness score range of 0–10, the GPNP with about 92.6% area of the EIS was above 6.0, and the mean baseline level of intactness was 7.1 when it was established in 2018. (2) The EIS in the east of Qionglaishan and south of Minshan were relatively lower than the rest of the study area. (3) During the past 40 years, 80% of the GPNP’s ecological intactness has remained stable. (4) In total, 14% of the GPNP was degraded mainly in the areas below 1200 m with severe human activities. (5) LUCC and road construction were the main driving factors for the decrease of ecological intactness in the GPNP. (6) The habitat of the giant panda is mainly distributed in the areas with an EIS above 6.0, and this is a key link between ecological intactness and habitat suitability. Our research proved that the ecological intactness score (EIS) is an effective indicator for monitoring and assessing the impact of human activities on the regional natural ecosystem and could be helpful for ecological restoration and human activities management GPNP in the future.

The recent development of the Micro Electromechanical System (MEMS) Phase Light Modulator (PLM) enables fast laser beam steering for lidar applications by displaying a Computer-Generated Hologram (CGH) without employing an iterative CGH calculation algorithm. We discuss the application of MEMS PLM (Texas Instruments PLM) for quasi-continuous laser beam steering by deterministically calculated CGHs. The effect on the diffraction efficiency of PLM non-equally spaced phase levels was quantified. We also address the CGH calculation algorithm and an experimental demonstration that steered and scanned the beam into multiple regions of interest points, enabling beam steering for lidar without sequential raster scanning.

Detection of human lower body provides an implementation idea for the automatic tracking and accurate relocation of automatic vehicles. Based on traditional SSD and ResNet, this paper proposes an improved detection algorithm R-SSD for human lower body detection, which utilizes ResNet50 instead of VGG16 to improve the feature extraction level of the model. According to the application of acquisition equipment, the model input resolution is increased to 448 × 448 and the model detection range is expanded. Six feature maps of the updated resolution network are selected for detection and the lower body image dataset is clustered into five categories for aspect ratio, which are evenly distributed to each feature detection map. The experimental results show that the model R-SSD detection accuracy after training reaches 85.1% mAP. Compared with the original SSD, the detection accuracy is improved by 7% mAP. The detection confidence in practical application reaches more than 99%, which lays the foundation for subsequent tracking and relocation for automatic vehicles.

Improving the coupling efficiency of two optical signals is a hot issue, where the efficiency of optical coupling has a significant effect on the signal transmission over the fiber link. To this end, the Large-Beam Fiber Coupler (LBFC) with a Double-combined Collimating Lens (DCL) and a single-mode TEC fiber structure are proposed in this study. Based on the propagation principle of Gaussian beams and the coupling requirements, the coupling mechanism of the fiber coupler and the coupling mismatch between the coupler is analytically modeled. The model and the optical path are optimized, then the ray tracing is used to calculate the coupling efficiency of inter-coupler signals for different SMF. The coupling efficiency is evaluated through experiments in terms of coupling efficiency and the radial, axial, and angular mismatches between the couplers. The results showed that with a large Mode Field Diameter (MFD), better coupling efficiency can be obtained, i.e., a large MFD of 28 μm is tested with its maximal efficiency of 95.16%. Moreover, the angular mismatch has the most significant impact on the coupling efficiency, while the axial mismatch has the least. The use of large MFD can alleviate the angular mismatch and thus improve the optical coupling efficiency.

The thermal efficiency limitation of the Flat-plate Micro Heat Pipe (FMHP) is a major challenge in the development of the FMHP, where the effect of wick structure and wettability on its thermal performance is studied to improve the thermal efficiency of the FMHP. In this work, a copper spiral woven mesh and copper foam Composite Wick FMHP (CW-FMHP) is designed based on the conventional Copper Foam Wick FMHP (CFW-FMHP), and its thermal performance is analyzed regarding the wick structure and internal gas–liquid two-phase flow characteristics. An oxidized copper spiral woven mesh and copper foam Composite Wick FMHP (OCW-FMHP) has been further developed through the modification of composite wick wettability. The performance tests are carried out with the thermal transfer characteristics of CW-FMHP, OCW-FMHP, and CFW-FMHP under different filling rates and different thermal powers. The experimental results show that the thermal transfer performance of CW-FMHP reaches the optimal under a liquid filling rate of 150%, where the maximum thermal power is 15.7 W, 35.3% higher than that of the CFW-FMHP under the same filling rate. Moreover, the dynamic response characteristics of the CW-FMHP are significantly improved. The thermal resistance of the CW-FMHP is 0.48 °C/W under the filling rate of 150% at the thermal power of 10 W with a reduction of 9.4% compared to the CFW-FMHP under the same condition. Furthermore, the optimal filling rate for OCW-FMHP is lower compared with the CW-FMHP. The maximum thermal power of OCW-FMHP increases to 17.8 W while the thermal resistance reduces to 0.34 °C/W under the liquid filling rate of 140%. This implies that the composite wick structure designed in this work can improve the thermal transfer performance of the FMHP, and the composite wick with wettability modification is more effective regarding both thermal resistance and maximum thermal power.

Materials simulations: Constructing models guaranteed to preserve the ground states A method has been developed for performing materials simulations without needing to perform manual parameter tuning for the ground-state. First-principles density functional theory calculations are one of the most commonly used tools for computational materials science research but they cannot easily be applied to large structures that contain many thousands of atoms. In such systems, cluster expansion models are often used but they have a problem: manual parameter tuning is required to preserve the ground-state --- important as this usually governs the materials properties. An international team of researchers led by Gerbrand Ceder from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory now present a procedure for constructing cluster expansion models that can preserve the ground states without any need for tuning.

Infants' visual experiences are important for learning, and may depend on how information is structured in the visual field. This study examined how objects are distributed in 12-month-old infants' field of view in a mobile play setting. Infants wore a mobile eye tracker that recorded their field of view and eye movements while they freely played with toys and a caregiver. We measured how centered and spread object locations were in infants' field of view, and investigated how infant posture, object looking, and object distance affected the centering and spread. We found that far toys were less centered in infants' field of view while infants were prone compared to when sitting or upright. Overall, toys became more centered in view and less spread in location when infants were looking at toys regardless of posture and toy distance. In sum, this study showed that infants' visual experiences are shaped by the physical relation between infants' bodies and the locations of objects in the world. However, infants are able to compensate for postural and environmental constraints by actively moving their head and eyes when choosing to look at an object.

This study investigated the impacts of network structure on a venture capital (VC) alliance’s successful exit from an emerging market by empirically analyzing joint VC data in China. We find that, compared to a mature capital market, the mechanism not only has a certain commonality but also shows the emerging market’s particularities. From the commonality perspective, the mechanism has a positive effect on successful exit by obtaining heterogeneity information. These particularities are manifested in the following three aspects. First, the mechanism is not conducive to deepening the enterprise value chain to establish credibility by obtaining short-term cash during an initial public offering with the enhancement of the VC alliance’s intervention ability for enterprise development. In addition, a VC alliance’s independent judgment is bound by the VC market. Furthermore, the problem of over-trust in investees reduces the likelihood of a VC alliance’s successful exit. Therefore, we should pay more attention to the particularity of emerging markets such as China to improve the relevant management mechanism.

A double-thimble-type fiber Bragg grating (FBG) temperature sensor that isolates the stress strain is developed, and the three materials of air, grease, and copper thimble are employed for encapsulating. To investigate the effect of different encapsulation materials on the time constant of the sensors under dynamic conditions, the transient heat conduction mathematical model is built according to the lumped heat capacity (LHC) system and thermal equilibrium theory, and the time constant is solved by an analytical solution. Then, a proportional three-dimensional sensor simulation model is established and the transient heat transfer process is numerically solved by the finite element analysis method. To verify the models, an experimental system is established to test the response speed of the three-type sensor and the experimental data are compared with the analytical and numerical solution results. The results show that the dynamic response performance depends on the encapsulation material parameters; the response speed is faster than recovery speed; and the response speed of the air packaging sensor is more than 20% faster than that of the grease packaging sensor, and more than 30% faster than that of the copper packaging sensor. The smaller the heat storage capacity and the larger the heat transfer coefficient, the faster the sensor’s response speed.

Industrial wastewater (IW) discharge, which is a known point source of pollution, is a major water pollution source. Increasing IW discharge has imposed considerable pressure on regional or global water environments. It is important to estimate the IW distribution in grid units to improve basin-scale hydrological processes and water quality modeling. For the first time, we use the nighttime light imagery produced by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program’s Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS) to estimate the spatial and temporal variations in the IW distribution from 1992 to 2010 in China. The digital number values per unit area (DNP) of each stable light image were calculated using nighttime light imagery and were regressed against the IW per unit area (IWP) to estimate the total industrial wastewater (TIW) for each province. The results indicated strong positive correlations between the DNP and the IWP for each province during different years. The fitted linear regression models were used to estimate IW discharge in China with reliable accuracy. The IW estimation using the satellite data was consistent with the statistical results. The results also revealed that the IW discharge coverage expanded, whereas the IW discharge intensity decreased from 1992 to 2010 in China.

The micro-fabricated thin film electrode array (TFEA) has been a promising design for cochlear implants (CIs) because of its cost-effectiveness and fabrication precision. The latest polymer-based cochlear TFEAs have faced difficulties for cochlear insertion due to the lack of structural stiffness. To stiffen the TFEA, dissolvable stiffening materials, TFEAs with different structures, and TFEAs with commercial CIs as carriers have been invested. In this work, the concept of enhancing a Parylene TFEA with Kapton tape as a simpler carrier for cochlear insertion has been proved to be feasible. The bending stiffness of the Kapton-aided TFEA was characterized with an analytical model, a finite element model, and a cantilever bending experiment, respectively. While the Kapton tape increased the bending stiffness of the Parylene TFEA by 103 times, the 6-μm-thick TFEA with a similar Young’s modulus, as a polyimide, in turn significantly increased the bending stiffness of the 170-μm-thick Kapton carrier by 60%. This result indicated that even the TFEA is ultra-flexible and that its bending stiffness should not be neglected in the design or selection of its carrier.

Emotion entrainment, which is generally defined as the synchronous convergence of human emotions, performs many important social functions. However, what the specific mechanisms of emotion entrainment are beyond in-person interactions, and how human emotions evolve under different entrainment patterns in large-scale social communities, are still unknown. In this paper, we aim to examine the massive emotion entrainment patterns and understand the underlying mechanisms in the context of social media. As modeling emotion dynamics on a large scale is often challenging, we elaborate a pragmatic framework to characterize and quantify the entrainment phenomenon. By applying this framework on the datasets from two large-scale social media platforms, we find that the emotions of online users entrain through social networks. We further uncover that online users often form their relations via dual entrainment, while maintain it through single entrainment. Remarkably, the emotions of online users are more convergent in nonreciprocal entrainment. Building on these findings, we develop an entrainment augmented model for emotion prediction. Experimental results suggest that entrainment patterns inform emotion proximity in dyads, and encoding their associations promotes emotion prediction. This work can further help us to understand the underlying dynamic process of large-scale online interactions and make more reasonable decisions regarding emergency situations, epidemic diseases, and political campaigns in cyberspace.

Combined electric and acoustic stimulation has proven to be an effective strategy to improve hearing in some cochlear implant users. We describe an acoustic microactuator to directly deliver stimuli to the perilymph in the scala tympani. The 800 µm by 800 µm actuator has a silicon diaphragm driven by a piezoelectric thin film (e.g., lead-zirconium-titanium oxide or PZT). This device could also be used as a component of a bimodal acoustic-electric electrode array. In the current study, we established a guinea pig model to test the actuator for its ability to deliver auditory signals to the cochlea in vivo. The actuator was placed through the round window of the cochlea. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds, peak latencies, and amplitude growth were calculated for an ear canal speaker versus the intracochlear actuator for tone burst stimuli at 4, 8, 16, and 24 kHz. An ABR was obtained after removal of the probe to assess loss of hearing related to the procedure. In some animals, the temporal bone was harvested for histologic analysis of cochlear damage. We show that the device is capable of stimulating ABRs in vivo with latencies and growth functions comparable to stimulation in the ear canal. Further experiments will be necessary to evaluate the efficiency and safety of this modality in long-term auditory stimulation and its ability to be integrated with conventional cochlear implant arrays.
