Abstract It is now well established that climate changes is affecting smallholder farmers and threatening agricultural production and livelihoods in South Kivu Province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), due to their limited capacity to cope with climate change. In the DRC, data on smallholder farmers’ perceptions of climate change effects and related shocks remain limited. This study was carried out to assess smallholder farmers’ vulnerability to climate change and their perceptions of related disruptions in livestock production in South Kivu Province. Specifically, the study assesses smallholder farmers’ exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity to climate change, as well as their perception of related shocks and the strategies they use to mitigate the shocks they experience. The study was conducted from May to October 2022 in five territories of South Kivu Province. Vulnerability was determined by considering the vulnerability index, potential impact index, and the adaptive capacity index. The findings revealed that livestock farmers in low-altitude zones are the most exposed and sensitive to the effects of climate change. However, their adaptive capacity is comparable to those of medium- and high-altitude zones. Most farmers believe that the observed effects of climate change and its impacts are due to poor agricultural and livestock practices. Their adaptive strategies include income diversification (57.6%), controlling livestock diseases (72%), adopting integrated production systems (65.2%), planting trees (56.9%), improving pasture management (45.5%), and using improved livestock breeds (41.3%). Despite their efforts, limited resources and access to technology constrain adaptation. This study highlights the critical role of farmers’ attitudes and perceptions in shaping their adaptive behaviors. It underscores the need for localized interventions that integrate Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices, built on traditional knowledge systems, to enhance resilience. These findings provide actionable insights for policymakers and practitioners aiming to improve the adaptive capacity of vulnerable communities in similar contexts.

In this work, a non-integer-order epidemic system modelling the nonlinear dynamics of Ebola virus disease is formulated in the sense of Caputo-ractional derivative. The existence and uniqueness of solution of the model is established. More importantly, the theoretical analysis carried out is aimed at establishing the local and global asymptotic stability properties of the disease-free steady state of the epidemic model using the fractional Routh-Hurwitz criterion and Lyapunov functional technique, respectively. It is proved that the steady state is locally and globally asymptotically stable at the value of the key epidemiological threshold quantity lower than unity. The result is numerically validated for different values of fractional order to show the asymptotic behavior of the disease dynamics. This result is significant for fighting and preventing Ebola epidemic in the population, since the Caputo derivative operator allows for effective description of the disease dynamics with memory, where the future evolution of the disease is governed by its prior history.

In this study, a new deterministic mathematical model based on fractional-order derivative operator that describes the pseudo-recovery dynamics of an epidemiological process is developed. Fractional-order derivative of Caputo type is used to examine the effect of memory in the spread process of infectious diseases with pseudo-recovery. The well-posedness of the model is qualitatively investigated through Banach fixed point theory technique. The spread of the disease in the population is measured by analysing the basic reproduction of the model with respect to its parameters through the sensitivity analysis. Consequently, the analysis is extended to the fractional optimal control model where time-dependent preventive strategy and treatment measure are characterized by Pontryagin's maximum principle. The resulting Caputo fractional-order optimality system is simulated to understand how both preventive and treatment controls affect the pseudo-recovery dynamics of infectious diseases in the presence of memory. Graphical illustrations are shown to corroborate the qualitative results, and to demonstrate the importance of memory effects in infectious disease modelling. It is shown that time-dependent preventive strategy and treatment measure in the presence of memory engenders significant reduction in the spread of the disease when compared with memoryless situation.

The Kenyan government implemented a Universal Health Coverage (UHC) pilot project in four (out of 47) counties in 2019 to address supply-side gaps and remove user fees at county referral hospitals. The objective of this study was to examine the UHC pilot implementation experience using a mixed-methods cross-sectional study in the four UHC pilot counties (Isiolo, Kisumu, Machakos, and Nyeri). We conducted exit interviews (n = 316) with health facility clients, in-depth interviews (n = 134) with national and county-level health sector stakeholders, focus group discussions (n = 22) with community members, and document reviews. We used a thematic analysis approach to analyze the qualitative data and descriptive analysis for the quantitative data. The UHC pilot resulted in increased utilization of healthcare services due to removal of user fees at the point of care and increased availability of essential health commodities. Design and implementation challenges included: a lack of clarity about the relationship between the UHC pilot and existing health financing arrangements, a poorly defined benefit package, funding flow challenges, limited healthcare provider autonomy, and inadequate health facility infrastructure. There were also persistent challenges with the procurement and supply of healthcare commodities and with accountability mechanisms between the Ministry of Health and county health departments. The study underscores the need for whole-system approaches to healthcare reform in order to ensure that the capacity to implement reforms is strengthened, and to align new reforms with existing system features.

Purpose: To use Sonazoid contrast-enhanced ultrasound (S-CEUS) and Gadolinium-Ethoxybenzyl-Diethylenetriamine Penta-Acetic Acid magnetic-resonance imaging (EOB-MRI), exploring a non-invasive preoperative diagnostic strategy for microvascular invasion (MVI) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods: 111 newly developed HCC cases were retrospectively collected. Both S-CEUS and EOB-MRI examinations were performed within one month of hepatectomy. The following indicators were investigated: size; vascularity in three phases of S-CEUS; margin, signal intensity, and peritumoral wedge shape in EOB-MRI; tumoral homogeneity, presence and integrity of the tumoral capsule in S-CEUS or EOB-MRI; presence of branching enhancement in S-CEUS; baseline clinical and serological data. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression and multivariate logistic regression analysis were applied to optimize feature selection for the model. A nomogram for MVI was developed and verified by bootstrap resampling. Results: Of the 16 variables we included, wedge and margin in HBP of EOB-MRI, capsule integrity in AP or HBP/PVP images of EOB-MRI/S-CEUS, and branching enhancement in AP of S-CEUS were identified as independent risk factors for MVI and incorporated into construction of the nomogram. The nomogram achieved an excellent diagnostic efficiency with an area under the curve of 0.8434 for full data training set and 0.7925 for bootstrapping validation set for 500 repetitions. In evaluating the nomogram, Hosmer–Lemeshow test for training set exhibited a good model fit with P > 0.05. Decision curve analysis of nomogram model yielded excellent clinical net benefit with a wide range (5–80 % and 85–94 %) of risk threshold. Conclusions: The MVI Nomogram established in this study may provide a strategy for optimizing the preoperative diagnosis of MVI, which in turn may improve the treatment and prognosis of MVI-related HCC.

In the era of the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0), companies are beginning to recognize the importance of large amounts of data available to come up with suitable decisions and to aid their strategies through Big Data. This study sheds light on the importance of using Big Data in the fast-food industry and highlights the potential benefits and challenges associated with its use. The study used structured interviews to gather data from fast-food company managers in Mahikeng. Structured interviews allow for the collection of in-depth and detailed data, which provide a comprehensive understanding of the experiences and perspectives of the participants. The study also identified several challenges that need to be addressed, such as data privacy and security concerns, technical challenges, and organizational barriers. One of the key contributions of this study is its focus on the fast-food industry in Mahikeng, which has not received much attention in the literature on Big Data applications. Overall, the study highlights the need for fast-food companies to invest in data analytics capabilities and to develop strategies for leveraging Big Data to improve their operations, customer experience, and competitiveness in the market. By doing so, fast-food companies can gain a competitive advantage and achieve sustainable business success in the era of Industry 4.0.

El presente artículo narra las diferentes intervenciones artísticas de los miembros pertenecientes a las comunidades indígenas de la cultura Cañari desarrolladas en la festividad del Inti Raymi del pueblo Cañari, en donde se visibiliza diferentes elementos culturales que forma parte de la vivencia como la música, danza, agricultura; también, el imaginario colectivo expresado por los lideres indígenas cañaris. El método de investigación empleado es de carácter cualitativo; alcance exploratorio y diseño micro etnográfico, como resultados se evidencia la importancia de la reivindicación y conservación de las tradiciones ancestrales indígenas, también la importancia de proteger las diferentes expresiones mediante el reconocimiento de patrimonio cultural invaluable.

Introduction. The focus of this qualitative study aimed to investigate how teaching to improve number sense concepts understanding to grade one learners can be attained as this is relevant to build a strong mathematics background. As the purpose was to improve number sense concepts understanding, the study employed a purposive sampling technique in its method, resulting in a total of five participants selected based on specific criteria. This method was guided by a research question: How do we teach to improve number sense concepts understanding grade one learners? Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis and analysed using thematic analysis. Some of the results in the findings useful to improve number sense concepts understanding include contextualizing using mediating tools that are in the learners’ environment. The conclusion drawn is the findings contribute to the existing literature and provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and researchers on how teaching to improve number sense concepts understanding to grade one learners can be achieved. The prospect lies in its importance to provide strategies that can be used to improve number sense concepts understanding in the context of the area where it was carried and even extrapolated to other contexts and also at the same time build a strong mathematics background at an early stage.

The purpose of this study was to compare the nutrient contents and phytochemical composition of the leaves, roots, and stem bark of Cissus populnea. The specimens came from Nsukka in Nigeria's Enugu State. Laboratory experimental design was used for this study. Samples of leaves, roots, and stem barks were prepared by drying them for two hours at 50 0C in a food dehydrator, ground into fine powder and dried again using the air-drying process The analyses were carried out using standard methods. The proximate analyses showed that the samples contain crude protein (1.89 - 2.11%), crude fibre (22.23 - 22.48%), crude fat (1.99 - 2.09%), carbohydrates (43.71 - 64.96%), ash (4.11 - 6.64%) and moisture (4.46- 4.84%). The phytochemical data showed that all plant components contained phenol, alkaloids, tannins, and terpenoids, but not steroids. Both saponin and flavoloid were found in the plant's roots and leaves only. Flavonoid was not detected in the stem. The results of mineral compositions showed that the root, stem, and leaf samples included potassium (340.83 – 439.33 mg/100g) calcium (132.99 – 295.78 mg/100g), iron (1.12 – 4.21 mg/100g), magnesium (27.41- 39.67 mg/100g) and manganese (0.14 – 3.99 mg/100g). Because of its nutrient contents and phytochemical proportions, consumers are encouraged to use any parts, though root parts of the plant seem to contain high nutrient.

Advanced control systems are the major interest in robotics, unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned maritime vehicles, and other complex systems. The design and validations of these control approaches have been commonly carry out by commercial and non-commercial software to solve numerically the dynamics equations in multiple degrees of freedoms. This work proposes a Python software to solve the problem of LQG/LTR control of a propelled autonomous underwater vehicle. Many features are included, such as the nonlinear simulation, multivariable linearization by numerical approximation, setting of a better allocation for the propellers. Recent versions of ROS2 Iron and Gazebo Harmonic are the keystone to build the AUV Simulator in which the open loop and closed loop maneuvers can be tested quite well. The obtained sensitivity functions present slopes above |20| dB/dec in surge and yaw dynamics, indicating robustness in performance and stability, and validating the software functionalities.

Abstract Neuronal differentiation—the development of neurons from neural stem cells—involves neurite outgrowth and is a key process during the development and regeneration of neural functions. In addition to various chemical signaling mechanisms, it has been suggested that thermal stimuli induce neuronal differentiation. However, the function of physiological subcellular thermogenesis during neuronal differentiation remains unknown. Here we create methods to manipulate and observe local intracellular temperature, and investigate the effects of noninvasive temperature changes on neuronal differentiation using neuron-like PC12 cells. Using quantitative heating with an infrared laser, we find an increase in local temperature (especially in the nucleus) facilitates neurite outgrowth. Intracellular thermometry reveals that neuronal differentiation is accompanied by intracellular thermogenesis associated with transcription and translation. Suppression of intracellular temperature increase during neuronal differentiation inhibits neurite outgrowth. Furthermore, spontaneous intracellular temperature elevation is involved in neurite outgrowth of primary mouse cortical neurons. These results offer a model for understanding neuronal differentiation induced by intracellular thermal signaling.

The coronavirus pandemic is a global health crisis creating an unprecedented socio-economic catastrophe. This pandemic is the biggest challenge the world has faced since World War II and is the main turning point in the history of humanity. Media coverage can change citizens’ attention to emerging infectious diseases and consequently change individual behaviors and attitudes. This study proposes and analyzes a seven-compartmental mathematical model to investigate the impact of media coverage on the spread and control of COVID-19. The threshold condition Ro for the initial transmission of infection is achieved by the next-generation approach. Stability analysis of the proposed model on disease-free and endemic equilibria is investigated in terms of basic reproduction numbers locally and globally. The sensitivity analysis of the reproduction number is visualized to distinguish the most sensitive parameters that can be regulated to control the transmission dynamics of coronavirus disease. Moreover, the theoretical results of the deterministic model are compared using numerical simulations. The outcomes of the analysis suggest that the disease prevalence can be terminated by suitable management of quarantine/medical care. We further extend the model to the optimal control framework. It is analyzed using Pontryagin’s maximum principle to characterize preventive control, testing facility, and treatment measures for managing COVID-19 transmission.

In developing countries, studies on sustainable preservation of forests (including non-timber forest products NTFPs) have been poorly carried out for promoting alternative income generating activities (IGA) to alleviate pressure on praised resources by local communities living close by protected areas. This study aimed at (1) inventorying NTFPs exploited by local communities around the Kahuzi Biega National Park (KBNP), (2) assessing their therapeutic values and nutritional contributions, and (3) analyzing their rural and urban market values to determine their potential as alternative income sources as well as the major constraints in their exploitation. Individual interviews were conducted with 790 rural and urban households in Kabare, Walungu, Kalehe, and Bukavu City, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) coupled with focus group discussions with key stakeholders around KBNP. Street vendors, restaurants, hotels, and market owners were also interviewed on uses, awareness of the nutritional and therapeutic values, and factors hindering NTFPs wide use in Bukavu urban environments. Physicochemical analyses were also conducted on main NTFPs to determine their nutritional values. Results showed that local populations around KBNP exploit at least 55 NTFPs, mainly for self-consumption as food, feed, and medicine. NTFPs represent the second most important income source around KBNP, accounting for 23.3 % of total households’ income after agriculture that generates 25.7 % of total households’ income. Income from NTFP trade was primarily used for food supply (29 %), investment in small businesses (19.6 %), children's education (17.7 %), and healthcare expenses (5.1 %). These NTFPs had varying nutritional values (in terms of proximate composition, essential minerals, and bioactive compounds). Solanum nigrum (24.9 %), Termitomyces robustus (18.0 %), Amaranthus viridis (17.6 %), and Piper nigrum (16.9 %) are valuable sources of proteins while Zingiber officinale (25.5 %), T. robustus (15.4 %) and P. nigrum (14.3 %) are rich in dietary fibres. Piper nigrum (37.0 and 128.3 mg/kg) and Basella alba (35.1 and 108.7 mg/kg) had the highest zinc and iron contents, respectively. Some of the most nutritious NTFPs, such as S. nigrum, Dioscorea spp., and P. nigrum had high contents in anti-nutritional elements and should be processed properly to maximize bioavailability. Besides, NTFPs created employment opportunities for collectors, vendors, supermarkets, hotels, and restaurants both in rural and urban areas. Though varying with rural communities, the main challenges in the NTFP value chain were low market values (48.6 %), short shelf life (22.5 %), and excessive taxation (19.1 %) while in urban areas, seasonality (36.9 %), scarcity (17.7 %), and prohibiting high prices (17.7 %) were the major limiting factors. This study highlights the significant role played by NTFPs in providing healthy and nutritious food and income for households surrounding the KBNP, and thus emphasizes the necessity for their promotion as alternative income sources and healthy diets to alleviate poverty and hidden hunger around the KBNP.

Abstract Elevated serum gamma‐glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels are associated with chronic hepatitis B (CHB)‐related hepatocellular carcinoma. However, their role in predicting mortality in patients with CHB treated with nucleotide/nucleoside analogs (NAs) remains elusive. Altogether, 2843 patients with CHB treated with NAs were recruited from a multinational cohort. Serum GGT levels before and 6 months (Month‐6) after initiating NAs were measured to explore their association with all‐cause, liver‐related, and non‐liver‐related mortality. The annual incidence of all‐cause mortality was 0.9/100 person‐years over a follow‐up period of 17,436.3 person‐years. Compared with patients who survived, those who died had a significantly higher pretreatment (89.3 vs. 67.4 U/L, p = 0.002) and Month‐6‐GGT levels (62.1 vs. 38.4 U/L, p 75 percentile of pretreatment GGT levels was observed with respect to the all‐cause mortality (trend p

The Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol is a widely used method for managing energy consumption in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). However, it has limitations that affect network longevity and performance. This paper presents an improved version of the LEACH protocol, termed MFG-LEACH, which incorporates the Mean Field Game (MFG) theory to optimize energy efficiency and network lifetime. The proposed MFG-LEACH protocol addresses the imbalances in energy consumption by modeling the interactions among nodes as a game, where each node optimizes its transmission energy based on the collective state of the network. We conducted extensive simulations to compare MFG-LEACH with Enhanced Zonal Stable Election Protocol (EZ-SEP), Energy-Aware Multi-Hop Routing (EAMR), and Balanced Residual Energy routing (BRE) protocols. The results demonstrate that MFG-LEACH significantly reduces energy consumption and increases the number of packets received across different node densities, thereby validating the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract There are several techniques for mapping wetlands. In this study, we examined four statistical models to assess the potential distribution of wetlands in the South-Kivu province by combining optical and SAR images. The approach involved integrating topographic, hydrological, and vegetation indices into the four most used classifiers, namely Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Random Forest (RF), Boosted Regression Tree (BRT), and Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt). A wetland distribution map was generated and classified into 'wetland' and 'non-wetland.' The results showed variations in predictions among the different models. RF exhibited the most accurate predictions, achieving an overall classification accuracy of 95.67% and AUC and TSS values of 82.4%. Integrating SAR data improved accuracy and precision, particularly for mapping small inland wetlands. Our estimations indicate that wetlands cover approximately 13.5% (898,690 ha) of the entire province. BRT estimated wetland areas to be ~ 16% (1,106,080 ha), while ANN estimated ~ 14% (967,820 ha), MaxEnt ~ 15% (1,036,950 ha), and RF approximately ~ 10% (691,300 ha). The distribution of these areas varied across different territories, with higher values observed in Mwenga, Shabunda, and Fizi. Many of these areas are permanently flooded, while others experience seasonal inundation. Through digitization, the delineation process revealed variations in wetland areas, ranging from tens to thousands of hectares. The geographical distribution of wetlands generated in this study will serve as an essential reference for future investigations and pave the way for further research on characterizing and categorizing these areas.

Gully erosion is one of the most intense landscape degradation mechanisms in areas with varying environmental characteristics. Both natural and anthropogenic factors affect the gullying process. Reliable documentation of these processes in tropical African cities is scarce. This study assessed the gully erosion dynamic and the susceptibility factors in the urban watershed of Kimemi in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Data were obtained through a combination of fieldwork and digitization of very high spatial resolution images from Google Earth (from 2011 to 2021). The length, width, and area of large gullies (width ≥ 5 m) were measured for each year of the study. A logistic regression model (LRM) was also used to investigate the influence of both physical and anthropogenic factors on gully susceptibility. The results revealed that the number of gullies has increased from 36 to 61 during the last decade. The gully mean length of 63.9 ± 61.1 m, 129.3 ± 104.9 m, and 174.7 ± 153.8 m were obtained for the years 2011, 2015, and 2021 respectively. The average density of gully network for the study period was 0.12 km/km², while the degraded land was ∼1.3 and ∼1.1 ha/year for 2011–2015 and 2015–2021 for the entire watershed. The significant changes in morphometric parameters (length, width, area) were found only in the bare land and building land uses. A strong and positive relationship between the length (m) and the area (ha) was found. Furthermore, the susceptibility of gullying was significantly influenced by the slope, stream power index (SPI), distance to roads and rivers, land use and land cover (LULC), and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). This means the areas located in the bare land and building or close to roads and/or streams are more likely to be gullied. The findings emphasize the impact of urbanization on gully erosion in the Kimemi watershed, highlighting the importance of informed land management decisions with a close attention to anthropogenic factors.

Abstract Background Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) can be used to treat heart diseases; however, the optimal maturity of hiPSC-CMs for effective regenerative medicine remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the benefits of long-term cultured mature hiPSC-CMs in injured rat hearts. Methods Cardiomyocytes were differentiated from hiPSCs via monolayer culturing, and the cells were harvested on day 28 or 56 (D28-CMs or D56-CMs, respectively) after differentiation. We transplanted D28-CMs or D56-CMs into the hearts of rat myocardial infarction models and examined cell retention and engraftment via in vivo bioluminescence imaging and histological analysis. We performed transcriptomic sequencing analysis to elucidate the genetic profiles before and after hiPSC-CM transplantation. Results Upregulated expression of mature sarcomere genes in vitro was observed in D56-CMs compared with D28-CMs. In vivo bioluminescence imaging studies revealed increased bioluminescence intensity of D56-CMs at 8 and 12 weeks post-transplantation. Histological and immunohistochemical analyses showed that D56-CMs promoted engraftment and maturation in the graft area at 12 weeks post-transplantation. Notably, D56-CMs consistently promoted microvessel formation in the graft area from 1 to 12 weeks post-transplantation. Transcriptomic sequencing analysis revealed that compared with the engrafted D28-CMs, the engrafted D56-CMs enriched genes related to blood vessel regulation at 12 weeks post-transplantation. As shown by transcriptomic and western blot analyses, the expression of a small heat shock protein, alpha-B crystallin (CRYAB), was significantly upregulated in D56-CMs compared with D28-CMs. Endothelial cell migration was inhibited by small interfering RNA-mediated knockdown of CRYAB when co-cultured with D56-CMs in vitro. Furthermore, CRYAB overexpression enhanced angiogenesis in the D28-CM grafts at 4 weeks post-transplantation. Conclusions Long-term cultured mature hiPSC-CMs promoted engraftment, maturation and angiogenesis post-transplantation in infarcted rat hearts. CRYAB, which was highly expressed in D56-CMs, was identified as an angiogenic factor from mature hiPSC-CMs. This study revealed the benefits of long-term culture, which may enhance the therapeutic potential of hiPSC-CMs.

Yam (Dioscorea spp.) is a key tuber crop in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) with huge potential for poverty alleviation, food sovereignty, and nutrition security. Exploiting its full potential requires that factors holding it down are understood and mitigated. This study, conducted between May and July 2022 and 2023, assessed yam farming practices, varietal preferences, and land suitability in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). We interviewed 765 smallholder farmers within four agro-ecological zones (AEZ) to assess the sociocultural, agronomic, varietal, and biophysical factors affecting yam production. Land suitability analyses were conducted using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to identify areas suitable to extensive yam production and to cluster environments that could optimize yam varietal selection and testing. Results showed that yam is mainly cultivated by women in eastern DRC (70%). The seed delivery system is informal, relying primarily on farmer-saved seeds and farmer-seed exchanges (74.9%). Soil depletion (68.3%), limited access to high-quality seeds (54.5%), youth disengagement in yam value chain (50.3%), insect pests (17.9%), and short tuber shelf-life (65.8%) were, respectively, the main ecological, agronomic, sociocultural, biological, and tuber quality factors hindering yam production in eastern DRC. However, the perceived importance of most factors significantly varied with farmer gender and age categories. A multitude of varietal traits was used to assess yam varieties in eastern DRC, of which the tuber taste (59%) was the most valued trait regardless of gender and age categories, though it had highest scores among middle-aged adult women. Land suitability analyses discriminated five clusters; the most significant part of the region falling under suitable (27%), highly suitable (24%), and very highly suitable classes (37%). We further discussed how breeding initiatives for delivering yam varieties, suiting local producers’ and end-users’ needs, could unlock the crop’s potential for enhancing food security and wealth creation in eastern DRC. The land suitability map from this study is a valuable decision-making tool in defining priority areas for extensive yam production and varietal selection and testing. This study provided valuable insights on factors affecting yam production and suggested yam breeding as a backbone of a holistic approach seeking to address challenges faced in unlocking the potential for yam production in eastern DRC.

Abstract Background The potential for the transfer of zoonotic diseases, including bacteria between human and non‐human primates (NHPs), is expected to rise. It is posited that NHPs that live in close contact with humans serve as sentinels and reservoirs for antibiotic‐resistant bacteria. Objectives The objective was to characterize the oral and rectal bacteria in Ghanaian NHPs and profile the antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolated bacteria. Methods Oral and rectal swabs were obtained from 40 immobilized wild and captive NHPs from 7 locations in Ghana. Standard bacteriological procedures were used in the isolation, preliminary identification, automated characterization and antimicrobial susceptibility test (AST) of bacteria using the Vitek 2 Compact system. Results Gram‐negative bacteria dominated isolates from the rectal swabs (n = 76, 85.4%), whereas Gram‐positive bacteria were more common in the oral swabs (n = 41, 82%). Staphylococcus haemolyticus (n = 7, 14%) was the most occurring bacterial species isolated from the oral swabs, whereas Escherichia coli (n = 32, 36%) dominated bacteria isolates from rectal swabs. Enterobacter spp. had the highest (39%) average phenotypic resistance to antimicrobials that were used for AST, whereas a trend of high resistance was recorded against norfloxacin, Ampicillin and Tetracycline in Gram‐negative bacteria. Similarly, among Gram‐positive bacteria, Staphylococcus spp. had the highest (25%) average phenotypic resistance to antimicrobials used for AST, and a trend of high resistance was recorded against penicillin G and oxacillin. Conclusions This study has established that apparently healthy NHPs that live in anthropized environments in Ghana harbour zoonotic and antimicrobial resistant bacteria.
