Structural and mutational analyses reveal interactions between NAD+-glycohydrolase and Streptolysin O critical for Group A Streptococcus virulence, validated in a murine infection model.

Abstract We report on experimental evidence of non-conversional pairing in In and Sn nanoparticle assemblies. Spontaneous magnetizations are observed, through extremely weak-field magnetization and neutron-diffraction measurements, to develop when the nanoparticles enter the superconducting state. The superconducting transition temperature TC shifts to a noticeably higher temperature when an external magnetic field or magnetic Ni nanoparticles are introduced into the vicinity of the superconducting In or Sn nanoparticles. There is a critical magnetic field and a critical Ni composition that must be reached before the magnetic environment will suppress the superconductivity. The observations may be understood when assuming development of spin-parallel superconducting pairs on the surfaces and spin-antiparallel superconducting pairs in the core of the nanoparticles.

Supercapacitors are candidates with the greatest potential for use in sustainable energy resources. Extensive research is being carried out to improve the performances of state-of-art supercapacitors to meet our increased energy demands because of huge technological innovations in various fields. The development of high-performing materials for supercapacitor components such as electrodes, electrolytes, current collectors, and separators is inevitable. To boost research in materials design and production toward supercapacitors, the up-to-date collection of recent advancements is necessary for the benefit of active researchers. This review summarizes the most recent developments of water-in-salt (WIS) and deep eutectic solvents (DES), which are considered significant electrolyte systems to advance the energy density of supercapacitors, with a focus on two-dimensional layered nanomaterials. It provides a comprehensive survey of 2D materials (graphene, MXenes, and transition-metal oxides/dichalcogenides/sulfides) employed in supercapacitors using WIS/DES electrolytes. The synthesis and characterization of various 2D materials along with their electrochemical performances in WIS and DES electrolyte systems are described. In addition, the challenges and opportunities for the next-generation supercapacitor devices are summarily discussed.

Nanomedicine has garnered significant interest owing to advances in drug delivery, effectively demonstrated in the treatment of certain diseases. Here, smart supermagnetic nanocomposites based on iron oxide nanoparticles (MNPs) coated with Pluronic F127 (F127) were developed for the delivery of doxorubicin (DOX) to tumor tissues. The XRD patterns for all samples revealed peaks consistent with Fe3O4, as shown by their indices (220), (311), (400), (422), (511), and (440), demonstrating that the structure of Fe3O4 did not change after the coating process. After loading with DOX, the as-prepared smart nanocomposites demonstrated drug-loading efficiency and drug-loading capacity percentages of 45 ± 0.10 and 17 ± 0.58% for MNP-F127-2-DOX and 65 ± 0.12 and 13 ± 0.79% for MNP-F127-3-DOX, respectively. Moreover, a better DOX release rate was observed under acidic conditions, which may be credited to the pH sensitivity of the polymer. In vitro analysis demonstrated the survival rate of approximately 90% in HepG2 cells treated with PBS and MNP-F127-3 nanocomposites. Furthermore, after treatment with MNP-F127-3-DOX, the survival rate decreased, confirming cellular inhibition. Hence, the synthesized smart nanocomposites showed great promise for drug delivery in liver cancer treatment, overcoming the limitations of traditional therapies.

The main problems of location fingerprint are the timeliness and accuracy of location. However, the huge fingerprint database and complex location information will make the location process extremely complex and time-consuming. On the basis of introducing the basic idea of the strongest access point (AP), a location fingerprints recognition algorithm based on K-means clustering of the farthest spatial AP of Wi-Fi is proposed. This algorithm improves the traditional K-means algorithm, chooses the optimal initial clustering centres based on the idea of the longest distance in space, and optimises the fingerprint database by using the improved algorithm to complete the rough location of fingerprint position. Then, the weight coefficients of AP are introduced into the Euclidean distance of the weighted k-nearest neighbour algorithm to enhance the contribution of spatial AP and achieve accurate location of the location fingerprint algorithm. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the algorithm. The algorithm not only effectively reduces the clustering time and the number of matched fingerprints, but also reduces the computational complexity of the algorithm, and reduces the negative impact on the real-time and accuracy of the positioning system.

Amphibolites in the Shuixiakou area of the southern Dunhuang Orogenic Belt, southernmost Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), occur as lenses within hornblende-biotite-plagioclase gneiss or pelitic schist, exhibiting block-in-matrix feature of tectonic mélange. Three generations of metamorphic mineral assemblages (M1, M2, and M3) have been recognized in the garnet-bearing amphibolite lenses. The metamorphic prograde assemblage (M1) is documented with inclusion trails (hornblende + plagioclase + quartz) within garnet porphyroblasts, and are estimated to be formed under 610–690 °C and 6.5–10.2 kbar. The metamorphic peak assemblage (M2) consists of garnet + hornblende + clinopyroxene + plagioclase + quartz in the matrix and records metamorphic peak P-T conditions of 720–750 °C and 13.4–14.7 kbar. The retrograde assemblage (M3) is represented by the symplectic assemblage (hornblende + plagioclase + quartz ± biotite ± magnetite) rimming the garnet porphyroblast, formed in the decompression stage under P-T conditions of 630–730 °C and 3.8–7.2 kbar. The derived metamorphic P-T paths show similar tight clockwise loops including nearly isothermal decompression processes, typical of orogenic metamorphism. SIMS dating of metamorphic zircons from the amphibolites confirm that the high-pressure metamorphism (M2) occurred at ca. 438–398 Ma.

Ultra-high pressure (UHP) metamorphism is recorded by garnet clinopyroxenite enclaves enclosed in an undeformed, unmetamorphosed granitic pluton, northeastern Paleozoic Dunhuang orogenic belt, northwestern China. The protoliths of the garnet clinopyroxenite might be basic or ultrabasic volcanic rocks. Three to four stages of metamorphic mineral assemblages have been found in the garnet clinopyroxenite, and clockwise metamorphic pressure–temperature (P-T) paths were retrieved, indicative of metamorphism in a subduction environment. Peak metamorphic P-T conditions (790–920 °C/28–41 kbar) of garnet clinopyroxenite suggest they experienced UHP metamorphism in the coesite- or diamond-stability field. The UHP metamorphic event is also confirmed by the occurrence of high-Al titanite enclosed in the garnet, along with at least three groups of aligned rutile lamellae exsolved from the garnet. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) U-Pb dating of metamorphic titanite indicates that the post-peak, subsequent tectonic exhumation of the UHP rocks occurred in the Devonian period (~389–370 Ma). These data suggest that part of the Paleozoic Dunhuang orogenic belt experienced UHP metamorphism, and diverse metamorphic facies series prevailed in this Paleozoic orogen. It can be further inferred that most of the UHP rocks in this orogen remain buried.

The Fe-doped NiO nanoparticles that were synthesized using a co-precipitation method are characterized by enhanced room-temperature ferromagnetic property evident from magnetic measurements. Neutron powder diffraction experiments suggested an increment of the magnetic moment of 3d ions in the nanoparticles as a function of Fe-concentration. The temperature, time, and field-dependent magnetization measurements show that the effect of Fe-doping in NiO has enhanced the intraparticle interactions due to formed defect clusters. The intraparticle interactions are proposed to bring additional magnetic anisotropy energy barriers that affect the overall magnetic moment relaxation process and emerging as room temperature magnetic memory. The outcome of this study is attractive for the future development of the room temperature ferromagnetic oxide system to facilitate the integration of spintronic devices and understanding of their fundamental physics.

In many metapelitic assemblages, plagioclase is either CaO-deficient or even absent. In such cases, all the widely applied, well-calibrated plagioclase-related geobarometers lose their usage. Fortunately, it has been found that a net-transfer reaction including intracrystalline Fe2+−Ca2+ exchange in garnet is pressure-sensitive, therefore, a garnet geobarometer can be empirically calibrated under pressure−temperature (P−T) conditions of 430~895 °C and 1~15 kbar. The chemical composition range of the calibrant garnet is XCa = 0.02~0.29 and XFe = 0.42~0.91, and covers the majority of garnet in metapelite. The total error of this geobarometer was estimated to be within ±1.3 kbar. The application of this garnet geobarometer to metamorphic terranes certifies its applicability, and this geobarometer can play a unique role, especially when plagioclase is absent or CaO-deficient. Metamorphic P−T conditions can be simultaneously determined by the garnet−biotite pair through the application of the present garnet geobarometer in combination with a well-calibrated garnet-biotite geothermometer.

Background: Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and most aggressive form of brain cancer. After surgery, radiotherapy is the mainstay of treatment for GBM patients. Unfortunately, the vast majority of GBM patients fail responding to radiotherapy because GBM cells remain highly resistant to radiation. Radiotherapy-induced DNA damage response may correlate with therapeutic resistance. Methods: Ionizing radiation (IR) was used to induce DNA damage. Cell proliferation and migration were detected by wound-healing, MTT and apoptosis assays. Dual-luciferase assays and Western blot analysis were performed to evaluate NF-κB activation and validate microRNA targets. Real-time PCR was used to study mRNA and microRNA levels. Results: IR-induced DNA damage activated NF-κB in GBM cells which promoted expression of IL-6, IL-8 and Bcl-xL, thereby contributing to cell survival and invasion. Knockdown SENP2 expression enhanced NF-κB essential modulator (NEMO) SUMOylation and NF-κB activity following IR exposure. miR-181b targets SENP2 and positively regulated NF-κB activity. Conclusion: NF-κB activation by DNA damage in GBM cells confers resistance to radiation-induced death.

Aiming at defects such as low contrast in infrared ship images, uneven distribution of ship size, and lack of texture details, which will lead to unmanned ship leakage misdetection and slow detection, this paper proposes an infrared ship detection model based on the improved YOLOv8 algorithm (R_YOLO). The algorithm incorporates the Efficient Multi-Scale Attention mechanism (EMA), the efficient Reparameterized Generalized-feature extraction module (CSPStage), the small target detection header, the Repulsion Loss function, and the context aggregation block (CABlock), which are designed to improve the model's ability to detect targets at multiple scales and the speed of model inference. The algorithm is validated in detail on two vessel datasets. The comprehensive experimental results demonstrate that, in the infrared dataset, the YOLOv8s algorithm exhibits improvements in various performance metrics. Specifically, compared to the baseline algorithm, there is a 3.1% increase in mean average precision at a threshold of 0.5 (mAP (0.5)), a 5.4% increase in recall rate, and a 2.2% increase in mAP (0.5:0.95). Simultaneously, while less than 5 times parameters, the mAP (0.5) and frames per second (FPS) exhibit an increase of 1.7% and more than 3 times, respectively, compared to the CAA_YOLO algorithm. Finally, the evaluation indexes on the visible light data set have shown an average improvement of 4.5%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
