A major goal of education is to help students retain as much meaningful information as possible for long periods of time. The learning process by which students acquire new knowledge and behaviors is closely related to memory, which is the core of cognition. In a previous study, we developed virtual reality visualization model (VRVM) that can be applied to address difficulties with learning medical biochemistry. Validation and evaluation studies are necessary to assess the usefulness of VRVM. The purpose of the present study is to apply VRVM and evaluate its effectiveness in a real educational environment. We modeled and verified the concept of spatiotemporality of information obtained through VRVM, which augments memories in linkage with hippocampal-centered networks while helping students to transition to higher-order thinking. The effectiveness of VRVM of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, an onerous topic for medical students, was compared with that of traditional educational methods. The experimental group used VRVM to learn the TCA cycle, while the control group learned from PowerPoint (Microsoft Co., Redmond, WA, USA) presentations using 2-dimensional (2D) diagrams. Evaluations of short-term and long-term memory indicated that learning using VRVM was more effective than learning through traditional lecture-based methods, and that VRVM resulted in better recall compared to traditional methods. Our findings suggest that VRVM can be applied when teaching students about the complicated TCA cycle, and that it helps medical students to improve their recall of carbohydrate metabolism in the context of medical biochemistry studies.

Work-function-adjustable TimSinOx provides an opportunity to optimize the energy-level alignment at the photoactive/cathode interface in the polymer bulk heterojunction solar cell. The work function of TimSinOx is engineered by adjusting the Si mol% during the sol–gel reaction. The controlled work function provides an energetically downhill cascade pathway for electrons from the electron acceptor to the cathode, which contributes to improvement in electron collection at the cathode. The valence band maxima of TimSinOx also become deeper as the Si mol% increases and the hole-blocking ability of TimSinOx is enhanced as a result. Accordingly, polymer solar cells fitted with the optimized TimSinOx exhibit enhanced performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Secretory proteins are critically dependent on the correct processing of their signal sequence by the signal peptidase complex (SPC). This step, which is essential for the proper folding and localization of proteins in eukaryotic cells, is still not fully understood. In eukaryotes, the SPC comprises four evolutionarily conserved membrane subunits (Spc1-3 and Sec11). Here, we investigated the role of Spc2, examining SPC cleavage efficiency on various models and natural signal sequences in yeast cells depleted of or with mutations in Spc2. Our data show that discrimination between substrates and identification of the cleavage site by SPC is compromised when Spc2 is absent or mutated. Molecular dynamics simulation of the yeast SPC AlphaFold2-Multimer model indicates that membrane thinning at the center of SPC is reduced without Spc2, suggesting a molecular explanation for the altered substrate recognition properties of SPC lacking Spc2.
