Iron is critical for neuronal activity and metabolism, and iron dysregulation alters these functions in age-related neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). AD is a chronic neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive neuronal dysfunction, memory loss and decreased cognitive function. AD patients exhibit elevated iron levels in the brain compared to age-matched non-AD individuals. However, the degree to which iron overload contributes to AD pathogenesis is unclear. Here, we evaluated the involvement of ferroptosis, an iron-dependent cell death process, in mediating AD-like pathologies in C. elegans. Results showed that iron accumulation occurred prior to the loss of neuronal function as worms age. In addition, energetic imbalance was an early event in iron-induced loss of neuronal function. Furthermore, the loss of neuronal function was, in part, due to increased mitochondrial reactive oxygen species mediated oxidative damage, ultimately resulting in ferroptotic cell death. The mitochondrial redox environment and ferroptosis were modulated by pharmacologic processes that exacerbate or abolish iron accumulation both in wild-type worms and worms with increased levels of neuronal amyloid beta (Aβ). However, neuronal Aβ worms were more sensitive to ferroptosis-mediated neuronal loss, and this increased toxicity was ameliorated by limiting the uptake of ferrous iron through knockout of divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1). In addition, DMT1 knockout completely suppressed phenotypic measures of Aβ toxicity with age. Overall, our findings suggest that iron-induced ferroptosis alters the mitochondrial redox environment to drive oxidative damage when neuronal Aβ is overexpressed. Herein, a heterojunction structure integrating p-type tellurium (Te) and n-type aluminum-doped indium-zinc-tin oxide (Al:IZTO) is shown to precisely modulate the threshold voltage ( V T ) of the oxide thin-film transistor (TFT). The proposed architecture integrates Te as an electron-blocking layer and Al:IZTO as a charge-carrier transporting layer, thereby enabling controlled electron injection. The effects of incorporating the Te layer onto Al:IZTO are investigated, with a focus on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, in order to explain the behavior of oxygen vacancies and to depict the energy band structure configurations. By modulating the thickness and employing both single and double deposition methods for the heterojunction Te layer, a remarkable V T shift of up to +20 V is achieved. Furthermore, this study also shows excellent stability to a positive bias stress of +2 MV/cm for 10,000 s without additional passivation layers, demonstrating the robustness of the designed TFT. By a thorough optimization of the Al:IZTO/Te interface, the results demonstrate not only the substantial impact of the introduced heterojunction structure on V T control but also the endurance, durability, and stability of the optimized TFTs under prolonged long-term operating stress, thus offering promising prospects for tailored semiconductor device applications.

Depth profiling is an essential method to investigate the physical and chemical properties of a solid electrolyte and electrolyte/electrode interface. In conventional depth profiling, various spectroscopic tools such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) are utilized to monitor the chemical states along with ion bombardment to etch a sample. Nevertheless, the ion bombardment during depth profiling results in an inevitable systematic error, i.e., the accumulation of mobile ions at the electrolyte/electrode interface, known as the ion pile-up phenomenon. Here, we propose a novel method using bias potential, the substrate-bias method, to prevent the ion pile-up phenomena during depth profiling of a solid electrolyte. When the positive bias potential is applied on the substrate (electrode), the number of accumulating ions at the electrolyte/electrode interface is significantly reduced. The in-depth XPS analysis with the biased electrode reveals not only the suppression of the ion pile-up phenomena but also the altered chemical states at the interfacial region between the electrolyte and electrode depending on the bias. The proposed substrate-bias method can be a good alternative scheme for an efficient yet precise depth profiling technique for a solid electrolyte.

Background: The conventional 20% threshold for hair diameter diversity (HDD), widely accepted for diagnosing androgenetic alopecia (AGA) in the vertex area, has not quantitatively analyzed., Objective: To validate the HDD 20% threshold for AGA and develop a refined, Korean-specific criterion., Methods: This study involved 240 male patients with AGA, categorized by the V stages of the basic and specific classification. Phototrichogram images of the vertex region were analyzed using Image J software for hair thickness measurement., Results: Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis determined the 45 μm hair diameter threshold as the most diagnostic for AGA, with an area under the curve value of 0.884 and a Youden index of 0.659. Optimal AGA diagnosis was achieved when over 21% of hair had a diameter of ≤45 μm., Limitations: Restriction to Korean male limits its applicability to a broader population, and using a specific hair diameter threshold does not account for individual variations in hair characteristics., Conclusion: The study validates the conventional HDD 20% threshold and proposes a more appropriate 45 μm threshold for Korean males, beyond the 40 μm. Hair luster is a key attribute of healthy hair and a crucial aspect of cosmetic appeal, reflecting the overall health and vitality of hair. Despite its significance, the advancement of therapeutic strategies for hair luster enhancement have been limited due to the absence of an effective experimental model. This study aimed to establish a novel animal model to assess hair gloss, employing ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on C57BL/6 mice. Specifically, UVB irradiation was meticulously applied to the shaved skin of these mice, simulating conditions that typically lead to hair luster loss in humans. The regrowth and characteristics of the hair were evaluated using a dual approach: an Investigator's Global Assessment (IGA) scale for subjective assessment and an image-based pixel-count method for objective quantification. These methods provided a comprehensive understanding of the changes in hair quality post-irradiation. To explore the potential reversibility of hair luster changes, oral minoxidil was administered, a treatment known for its effects on hair growth and texture. Further, to gain insights into the underlying biological mechanisms, bulk RNA transcriptomic analysis of skin tissue was conducted. This analysis revealed significant alterations in the expression of keratin-associated protein (KRTAP) genes, suggesting modifications in hair keratin crosslinking due to UV exposure. These changes are crucial in understanding the molecular dynamics affecting hair luster. The development of this new mouse model is a significant advancement in hair care research. It not only facilitates the evaluation of hair luster in a controlled setting but also opens avenues for the research and development of innovative therapeutic strategies. This model holds promise for the formulation of more effective hair care products and treatments, potentially revolutionizing the approach towards managing and enhancing hair luster.

Regdanvimab is a novel neutralizing antibody agent used for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the effectiveness of regdanvimab in delta-variant patients has rarely been investigated. We examined the clinical outcomes and adverse events in COVID 19 patients treated with regdanvimab in the delta-variant era. Data were collected from laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 hospitalized patients who received regdanvimab in 2021 and categorized into pre-delta and delta variant groups. The primary outcome was the need for oxygen therapy. Rescue therapy, clinical improvement, and adverse events were analyzed. Among 101 patients treated with regdanvimab, 31 (30.7%) were delta patients and 49 (48.5) were pre-delta patients. 64.4% were male, the mean age was 60.3 years, and 70 patients (69%) had at least one underlying disease. The median interval from symptom onset to injection was 4 days. Twenty-three patients (23%) needed oxygen therapy, including 9 (29%) in the delta and 8 (16.3%) in the pre-delta group. (P = .176) The risk of early oxygen supplement was higher in the delta group (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR), 6.75; 95% confidence interval(CI), 1.53-29.8). The in-hospital survival rate was 100%, and no patients were admitted to the intensive care unit. Adverse events occurred in 43% of patients:13 (42%) delta patients and 23 (47%) pre-delta patients had any adverse events (P = .661). Patients treated with regdanvimab 4 days after symptom onset showed a favorable prognosis (aHR, 0.26; 95% CI, 0.26-0.91). Background: The older population is at high risk of lung cancer (LC). However, the importance of lung cancer screening (LCS) in this population is rarely investigated. Herein, we evaluated the effect of LCS with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) in the older population., Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted in a single center and included patients aged 70-80 years who had undergone LCS with LDCT. They were categorized into the early 70s (70-74 years) and late 70s (75-80 years) groups based on their age. Using propensity score matching, the control group included patients with non-screening-detected LC from an LC cohort. LC detection, characteristics, and treatment were compared between the early and late 70s groups and between screening-detected LC and non-screening-detected LC., Results: The study included 1,281 participants who underwent LDCT for LCS, of whom 1,020 were in their early 70s and 261 in their late 70s. Among the screening groups, 87.7% of the patients were ever-smokers. The overall LC detection rate was 2.8%. Interestingly, the LC detection rate in the late 70s group was similar to that in the early 70s group (3.4% vs. 2.7%, P=0.485). Furthermore, the incidence of LC was 6.1 cases and 8.3 cases per 1,000 person-years in the early 70s and late 70s groups, respectively (P=0.428). When comparing LC characteristics, patients with screening-detected LC showed a higher proportion of stage I LC (52.8% vs. 30.6%, P=0.010) and a lower proportion of stage IV LC (19.4% vs. 42.2%, P=0.010) than those with non-screening-detected LC. This work investigates the function of the oxygen partial pressure in photo-induced current measurement of extended defect properties related to the distribution and quantity of defect states in electronic structures. The Fermi level was adjusted by applying a negative gate bias in the TFT structure, and the measurable range of activation energy was extended to < 2.0 eV. Calculations based on density functional theory are used to investigate the changes in defect characteristics and the role of defects at shallow and deep levels as a function of oxygen partial pressure. Device characteristics, such as mobility and threshold voltage shift under a negative gate bias, showed a linear correlation with the ratio of shallow level to deep level defect density. Background: Psoriasis is a chronically relapsing inflammatory skin disease primarily perpetuated by skin-resident IL-17-producing T (T17) cells. Pellino-1 (Peli1) belongs to a member of E3 ubiquitin ligase mediating immune receptor signaling cascades, including nuclear factor kappa-light-chain enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) pathway., Objective: We explored the potential role of Peli1 in psoriatic inflammation in the context of skin-resident T17 cells., Methods: We performed single-cell RNA sequencing of relapsing and resolved psoriatic lesions with analysis for validation data set of psoriasis. Mice with systemic and conditional depletion of Peli1 were generated to evaluate the role of Peli1 in imiquimod-induced psoriasiform dermatitis. Pharmacologic inhibition of Peli1 in human CD4 + T cells and ex vivo human skin cultures was also examined to evaluate its potential therapeutic implications., Results: Single-cell RNA sequencing analysis revealed distinct T-cell subsets in relapsing psoriasis exhibiting highly enriched gene signatures for (1) tissue-resident T cells, (2) T17 cells, and (3) NF-κB signaling pathway including PELI1. Peli1-deficient mice were profoundly protected from psoriasiform dermatitis, with reduced IL-17A production and NF-κB activation in γδ T17 cells. Mice with conditional depletion of Peli1 treated with FTY720 revealed that Peli1 was intrinsically required for the skin-resident T17 cell immune responses. The top-gate structure is currently adopted in various flat-panel displays because of its diverse advantages such as passivation from the external environment and process compatibility with industries. However, the mobility of the currently commercialized top-gate oxide thin-film transistors (TFTs) is insufficient to drive ultrahigh-resolution displays. Accordingly, this work suggests metal-capped Zn-Ba-Sn-O transistors with top-gate structures for inducing mobility-enhancing effects. The fabricated top-gate device contains para-xylylene (PPx), which is deposited by a low-temperature chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process, as a dielectric layer and exhibits excellent interfacial and dielectric properties. A technology computer-aided design (TCAD) device simulation reveals that the mobility enhancement in the Al-capped (Zn,Ba)SnO 3 (ZBTO) TFT is attributed not only to the increase in the electron concentration, which is induced by band engineering due to the Al work function but also to the increased electron velocity due to the redistribution of the lateral electric field. As a result, the mobility of the Al-capped top-gate ZBTO device is 5 times higher (∼110 cm 2 /Vs) than that of the reference device. These results demonstrate the applicability of top-gate oxide TFTs with ultrahigh mobility in a wide range of applications, such as for high-resolution, large-area, and flexible displays.

Ultrahigh-resolution patterning with high-throughput and high-fidelity is highly in demand for expanding the potential of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) from mobile and TV displays into near-to-eye microdisplays. However, current patterning techniques so far suffer from low resolution, consecutive pattern for RGB pixelation, low pattern fidelity, and throughput issue. Here, we present a silicone engineered anisotropic lithography of the organic light-emitting semiconductor (OLES) that in-situ forms a non-volatile etch-blocking layer during reactive ion etching. This unique feature not only slows the etch rate but also enhances the anisotropy of etch direction, leading to gain delicate control in forming ultrahigh-density multicolor OLES patterns (up to 4500 pixels per inch) through photolithography. The resistive switching behavior of the solution processed SiO x device was investigated by inserting TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs). Compared to the pristine SiO x device, the TiO 2 NPs inserted SiO x (SiO x @TiO 2 NPs) device achieves outstanding switching characteristics, namely a higher ratio of SET/RESET, lower operating voltages, improved cycle-to-cycle variability, faster switching speed, and multiple-RESET states. Density functional theory calculation (DFT) and circuit breaker simulation (CB) were used to detail the origin of the outstanding switching characteristic of the SiO x @TiO 2 NPs. The improvement in resistive switching is mainly based on the difference in formation/rupture of the conductive path in the SiO 2 and SiO 2 @TiO 2 NPs devices. In particular, the reduction of resistance and lower switching voltage of TiO 2 NPs control the formation and rupture of the conductive path to achieve more abrupt switching between SET/RESET with higher on/off ratio. Behçet's disease (BD), a chronic multi-systemic disorder, presents diverse clinical manifestations depending on patient ethnicity and geographic region. Use of varying diagnostic criteria augments clinical heterogeneity. We aimed to characterize heterogenous manifestations in patients with full-blown BD fulfilling the major diagnostic criteria in use. We retrospectively analyzed 338 patients diagnosed with complete BD based on Japanese diagnostic criteria, which fulfill both International Study Group (ISG) criteria and the International Criteria for BD (ICBD). Unbiased clustering analysis was performed to elucidate the heterogeneous spectrum, followed by subgroup analysis of identified clusters. Results of unbiased clustering analysis identify dominant skin lesion type as an important factor that determines clustering among the heterogenous BD patients. Regression analysis reveals that presence of predominantly papulopustular lesions has protective effect for vascular involvement compared to other skin phenotypes. In conclusion, unbiased clustering analysis highlights that dermatologic manifestation can be a factor to understand the heterogeneity of BD and determining the dominant type of skin lesions may help clinicians predict major vascular involvement., (© 2021 Japanese Dermatological Association.)

Background: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common disorder characterized by episodic ulcerations in the oral mucosa. Although colchicine has been a common systemic treatment for RAS, there is still considerable uncertainty regarding its efficacy and drug survival in this setting., Objective: We aimed to study drug survival, efficacy, and safety of colchicine for the treatment of RAS, especially in the real clinical setting., Methods: Between 2012 and 2016, 150 patients given colchicine for RAS were selected for a single-centre retrospective study of real-world efficacy and drug survival., Results: Among the 114 patients who qualified, 81.6% showed moderate or substantial responses (>25% improvement). Gastrointestinal complications (16.7%), neutropenia (3.5%), and liver enzyme elevation (4.4%) were reported within 2 weeks after initiating treatment. Delayed adverse manifestations were rare. One year after onset, colchicine use was sustained in roughly one-half (49.5%) of patients, whereas many (30.3%) had discontinued the drug, primarily due to lack of efficacy or adverse events. In Cox proportional hazard analysis, minor ulcers were identified as potential determinants of longer drug survival owing to less probability of non-efficacy. However, major ulcers had emerged as predictors of early discontinuation due to lack of efficacy., Conclusion: In patients with RAS, colchicine may be an effective and safe treatment amenable to long-term maintenance. There is an unmet need for novel, non-pharmacological therapeutics to treat alopecia. Recent studies have shown the potential biological benefits of non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma (NTAPP), including wound healing, angiogenesis, and the proliferation of stem cells. We hypothesized that NTAPP might have a stimulatory effect on hair growth or regeneration. We designed an NTAPP-generating apparatus which is applicable to in vitro and in vivo experiments. The human dermal papilla (DP) cells, isolated fresh hair follicles, and mouse back skin were exposed with the NTAPP. Biological outcomes were measured using RNA-sequencing, RT-PCR, Western blots, and immunostaining. The NTAPP treatment increased the expression levels of Wnt/β-catenin pathway-related genes (AMER3, CCND1, LEF1, and LRG1) and proteins (β-catenin, p-GSK3β, and cyclin D1) in human DP cells. In contrast, inhibitors of Wnt/β-catenin signaling, endo-IWR1 and IWP2, attenuated the levels of cyclin D1, p-GSK3β, and β-catenin proteins induced by NTAPP. Furthermore, we observed that NTAPP induced the activation of β-catenin in DP cells of hair follicles and the mRNA levels of target genes of the β-catenin signaling pathway (CCND1, LEF1, and TCF4). NTAPP-treated mice exhibited markedly increased anagen induction, hair growth, and the protein levels of β-catenin, p-GSK3β, p-AKT, and cyclin D1. NTAPP stimulates hair growth via activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in DP cells. Background: The clinicopathologic correlations and prognostic risk factors for refractory disease in morphea (localized scleroderma) are poorly described., Objective: To investigate the association between clinical characteristics and histopathologic features of morphea and identify risk factors for refractory disease., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and histopathologic features, treatment regimens, and clinical responses for 137 patients with biopsy-proven morphea from January 2008 to May 2019. Multivariate analysis was conducted to identify factors associated with poor treatment response., Results: We detected associations between the pattern and degree of sclerosis and the anatomic site of the lesion, as well as between severe inflammation and concomitant autoimmune disease. Additionally, both bottom-heavy sclerosis and increased inflammation were associated with functional limitations/clinical symptoms. Background: Recent advancements in laser-assisted drug delivery have emphasized the importance of post-laser use of active ingredients., Aims: We evaluated the effect of topical post-laser treatment with adipocyte-derived stem cell-containing medium (ADSC-CM) in combination with niacinamide through a double-blind, randomized, vehicle-controlled study., Patients/methods: Twenty-five patients with aging skin underwent ablative fractional laser (AFL) treatment on both sides of the face for skin rejuvenation. Moisturizers with or without ADSC-CM plus 2% niacinamide was applied to the designated sides of faces for 3 weeks. The wrinkle and the melanin indices were assessed using a specialized digital photography analyzer. Additional in vitro assays were performed., Results: The wrinkle index, melanin index, patient satisfaction score, and the investigator's global esthetic improvement scale (GAIS) after use of ADSC-CM plus niacinamide were significantly higher than after use of the vehicle cream. The in vitro UVB irradiation assays with human keratinocytes showed decreased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines upon incubation with ADSC-CM plus niacinamide, and the cell scratch assay displayed decreased MMP-1 and MMP-2 expression as well as increased Type 1 collagen expression., Conclusions: We demonstrated that post-laser topical application of ADSC-CM in combination with niacinamide has anti-aging effect on skin., (© 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

TiO x -based resistive switching devices have recently attracted attention as a promising candidate for next-generation non-volatile memory devices. A number of studies have attempted to increase the structural density of resistive switching devices. The fabrication of a multi-level switching device is a feasible method for increasing the density of the memory cell. Herein, we attempt to obtain a non-volatile multi-level switching memory device that is highly transparent by embedding SiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) into the TiO x matrix (TiO x @SiO 2 NPs). The fully transparent resistive switching device is fabricated with an ITO/TiO x @SiO 2 NPs/ITO structure on glass substrate, and it shows transmittance over 95% in the visible range. The TiO x @SiO 2 NPs device shows outstanding switching characteristics, such as a high on/off ratio, long retention time, good endurance, and distinguishable multi-level switching. To understand multi-level switching characteristics by adjusting the set voltages, we analyze the switching mechanism in each resistive state. This method represents a promising approach for high-performance non-volatile multi-level memory applications.

In accordance with the fourth industrial revolution (4IR), thin-film all-solid-state batteries (TF-ASSBs) are being revived as the most promising energy source to power small electronic devices. However, current TF-ASSBs still suffer from the perpetual necessity of high-performance battery components. While every component, a series of a TF solid electrolyte ( i.e ., lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON)) and electrodes (cathode and Li metal anode), has been considered vital, the lack of understanding of and ability to ameliorate the cathode (or anode)-electrolyte interface (CEI) (or AEI) has impeded the development of TF-ASSBs. In this work, we suggest an ensemble design of TF-ASSBs using LiPON (500 nm), an amorphous TF-V 2 O 5- x cathode with oxygen vacancies (O vacancy ), a thin evaporated Li anode (evp-Li) with a thickness of 1 μm, and an artificial ultrathin Al 2 O 3 layer between evp-Li and LiPON. Well-defined O vacancy sites, such as O(II) vacancy and O(III) vacancy , in amorphous TF-V 2 O 5- x not only allow isotropic Li + diffusion at the CEI but also enhance both the ionic and electronic conductivities. For the AEI, we employed protective Al 2 O 3 , which was specially sputtered using the facing target sputtering (FTS) method to form a homogeneous layer without damage from plasma. In regard to the contact with evp-Li, interfacial stability, electrochemical impedance, and battery performance, the nanometric Al 2 O 3 layers (1 nm) were optimized at different temperatures (40, 60, and 80 °C). The TF-ASSB cell containing Al 2 O 3 (1 nm) delivers a high specific capacity of 474.01 mAh cm -3 under 60 °C at 2 C for the 400th cycle, and it achieves a long lifespan as well as ultrafast rate capability levels, even at 100 C; these results were comparable to those of TF Li-ion battery cells using a liquid electrolyte. We demonstrated the reaction mechanism at the AEI utilizing time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for a better understanding. Our design provides a signpost for future research on the rational structure of TF-LIBs.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate inhaler device handling in elderly patients. Inhaler devices with respect to misuse and error correction were also compared., Methods: Inhaler use technique was assessed using standardized checklists at the first visit and 3-month follow-up visit after retraining. The primary outcome was difference in the acceptable use ratio among inhaler devices. Secondary outcomes included differences in error correction, the most common step of misuse, and factors affecting the accuracy of inhaler use., Results: A total of 251 patients (mean age, 76.4 years) were included. The handling of 320 devices was assessed in the study. All patients had been trained before. However, only 24.7% of them used inhalers correctly. Proportions of acceptable use for Evohaler, Respimat, Turbuhaler, Ellipta, and Breezhaler/Handihaler were 38.7%, 50.0%, 61.4%, 60.8%, and 43.2%, respectively (p=0.026). At the second visit, the acceptable use ratio had increased. There were no significant differences among inhaler types (Evohaler, 63.9%; Respimat, 86.1%; Turbuhaler, 74.3%; Ellipta, 64.6%; and Breezhaler/Handihaler, 65.3% [p=0.129]). In multivariate analysis, body mass index, Turbuhaler, and Ellipta showed positive correlations with acceptable use of inhalers, whereas Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Assessment Test score showed a negative correlation., Conclusion: Although new inhalers have been developed, the accuracy of inhaler use remains low. Elderly patients showed more errors when using pressurized metered-dose inhalers than using dry powder inhalers and soft-mist inhalers. However, there were no significant differences in misuse among inhaler devices after individual training. Results of this study suggests that repeat training is more important than inhaler type.

The class of organic-inorganic lead halides with perovskite crystal structures has recently emerged as promising materials for a variety of practical optoelectronic applications. In particular, hybrid halide perovskite quantum dots possess excellent intrinsic optoelectronic properties such as high color purity (full width at half-maximum of 24.59 nm) and photoluminescence quantum yields (92.7%). In this work, we demonstrate the use of perovskite quantum dot materials as an emissive layer of hybrid light-emitting transistors. To investigate the working mechanism of perovskite quantum dots in light-emitting transistors, we investigated the electrical and optical characteristics under both p-channel and n-channel operation. Using these materials, we have achieved perovskite quantum dot light-emitting transistors with high electron mobilities of up to 12.06 cm 2 ·V -1 s -1 , high brightness of up to 1.41 × 10 4 cd m -2 , and enhanced external quantum efficiencies of up to 1.79% operating at a source-drain potential of 40 V.

The bulk tissue RNA sequencing technique measures the average gene expression of potentially heterogeneous cellular subsets of human skin. However, single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) enables both profiling of gene expression measurements at a single-cell resolution and identification of cellular heterogeneity. This recent technical advance has broadened the understanding of many aspects of skin biology, such as development, oncogenesis, and immunopathogenesis. However, due to the low number of mRNAs detectable in an individual cell and the alteration of transcriptomes during sample preparation, scRNA-seq data are often extremely noisy. Moreover, unstandardized methodologies for sample preparation, capturing, and bioinformatic analysis (e.g., batch correction or integration) hamper reliable inter-study comparisons. Nevertheless, sophisticated bioinformatic analysis and integrative omics-based approaches are making up for these limitations. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted tremendous research attention due to their potential as a next-generation photovoltaic cell. Transition metal oxides in N-I-P structures have been widely used as electron-transporting materials but the need for a high-temperature sintering step is incompatible with flexible substrate materials and perovskite materials which cannot withstand elevated temperatures. In this work, novel metal oxides prepared by sputtering deposition were investigated as electron-transport layers in planar PSCs with the N-I-P structure. The incorporation of tungsten in the oxide layer led to a power conversion efficiency (PCE) increase from 8.23% to 16.05% due to the enhanced electron transfer and reduced back-recombination. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images reveal that relatively large grain sizes in the perovskite phase with small grain boundaries were formed when the perovskite was deposited on tungsten-doped films. This study demonstrates that novel metal oxides can be used as in perovskite devices as electron transfer layers to improve the efficiency.

Si doping was used to significantly improve the bias stability of ZnON thin-film transistors. Si 3 W (~1%) doped ZnON TFTs showed a saturation mobility of 19.70 cm 2 /Vs along with remarkable improvements in the threshold voltage shift for negative gate bias stress (NBS) within 1.69 V. The effects of Si doping were interpreted by the experimental correlation between device performance and physical analysis, as well as by the theoretical calculation. Si doping induces the reduction of N-related defects by increasing stoichiometric Zn 3 N 2 , and decreasing nonstoichiometric Zn x N y . In addition, Si doping reduces the band edge states below the conduction band. According to density functional theory (DFT) calculations, Si, when it substitutes for Zn, acts as a carrier suppressor in the ZnON matrix.

This paper reports a new p-type tin oxyselenide (SnSeO), which was designed with the concept that the valence band edge from O 2p orbitals in the majority of metal oxides becomes delocalized by hybridizing Se 4p and Sn 5s orbitals. As the Se loading increased, the SnSeO film structures were transformed from tetragonal SnO to orthorhombic SnSe, which was accompanied by an increase in the amorphous phase portion and smooth morphologies. The SnSe 0.56 O 0.44 film annealed at 300 °C exhibited the highest Hall mobility (μ Hall ), 15.0 cm 2 (V s) -1 , and hole carrier density ( n h ), 1.2 × 10 17 cm -3 . The remarkable electrical performance was explained by the low hole effective mass, which was calculated by a first principle calculation. Indeed, the fabricated field-effect transistor (FET) with a p-channel SnSe 0.56 O 0.44 film showed the high field-effect mobility of 5.9 cm 2 (V s) -1 and an I ON/OFF ratio of 3 × 10 2 . This work demonstrates that anion alloy-based hybridization provides a facile route to the realization of a high-performance p-channel FET and complementary devices.

We have investigated a series of non-conjugated polyelectrolytes (NPEs) which are based on a polyethylenimine (PEI) backbone with various counterions, such as Br - I - and BIm 4 - , as interfacial layers at the electrodes of solar cells and transistor devices to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and device performance. This new series of NPEs with different counterions are capable of forming electric dipoles at NPE/metal electrode interfaces; as a consequence tuning of the energy levels, and work function (WF) of the electrodes is possible. Using this approach, the PCE of organic solar cells could be improved from 1.05% (without NPEs) to 6.77% (with NPEs) while the charge carrier mobility and on/off ratio of FET devices could be improved, showing the broad utility of this type of material. A universal method that enables utilization of conventional photolithography for processing a variety of polymer semiconductors is developed. The method relies on imparting chemical and physical orthogonality to a polymer film via formation of a semi-interpenetrating diphasic polymer network with a bridged polysilsesquioxane structure, which is termed an orthogonal polymer semiconductor gel. The synthesized gel films remain tolerant to various chemical and physical etching processes involved in photolithography, thereby facilitating fabrication of high-resolution patterns of polymer semiconductors. This method is utilized for fabricating tandem electronics, including pn-complementary inverter logic devices and pixelated polymer light-emitting diodes, which require deposition of multiple polymer semiconductors through solution processes. Hydrogenated amorphous Si (a-Si:H) thin-film solar cells (TFSCs) generally contain p/n-type Si layers, which are fabricated using toxic gases. The substitution of these p/n-type layers with non-toxic materials while improving the device performance is a major challenge in the field of TFSCs. Herein, we report the fabrication of a-Si:H TFSCs with the n-type Si layer replaced with a self-assembled monolayer (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES). The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that the amine groups from APTES attached with the hydroxyl groups (-OH) on the intrinsic Si (i-Si) surface to form a positive interfacial dipole towards i-Si. This interfacial dipole facilitated the decrease in electron extraction barrier by lowering the work function of the cathode. Consequently, the TFSC with APTES showed a higher fill factor (0.61) and power conversion efficiency (7.68%) than the reference device (without APTES). This performance enhancement of the TFSC with APTES can be attributed to its superior built-in potential and the reduction in the Schottky barrier of the cathode. In addition, the TFSCs with APTES showed lower leakage currents under dark conditions, and hence better charge separation and stability than the reference device. This indicates that APTES is a potential alternative to n-type Si layers, and hence can be used for the fabrication of non-toxic air-stable a-Si:H TFSCs with enhanced performance., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interests., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)
