Iron is a vital trace element for energy production and oxygen transportation; importantly, it is essential to athletic performance. Maintaining iron balance is tightly controlled at systemic and cellular levels. This study aimed to determine serum iron tests, hepcidin levels, and cellular iron import and export activities in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in ultramarathon runners to elucidate the association of systemic inflammation response and iron metabolism.Sixteen amateur runners were enrolled. Blood samples were taken 1 week before, immediately, and 24 h after the run. Plasma hepcidin levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The expression levels of divalent metal iron transporter 1 (DMT1), ZRT/IRT-like protein 14 (ZIP14), transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1), and ferroportin (FPN) in PBMCs were measured using real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction.Serum iron concentrations and transferrin saturation significantly decreased immediately after the race and dramatically recovered 24 h post-race. Serum ferritin levels had a statistically significant rise immediately after the race and remained high 24 h after the completion of the race. Ultramarathons were associated with increased plasma interleukin-6 concentrations corresponding to the state of severe systemic inflammation and therefore boosted plasma hepcidin levels. The expression levels of DMT1 and FPN mRNA were markedly decreased immediately and 24 h after the race. The ZIP14 and TfR1 mRNA expression in PBMCs significantly decreased immediately after the race and returned to the baseline level at 24 h post-race. Positive significant correlations were observed between plasma hepcidin and ferritin levels.Iron homeostasis and systemic inflammatory response are closely interconnected. Cellular iron import and export mRNA activities in PBMCs were acutely inhibited during an ultramarathon.

Targeted temperature management (TTM) has been reported to improve outcomes in in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) patients but little has been investigated into the relationship between prognoses and the blood urea nitrogen to creatinine ratio (BCR).A retrospective analysis of data from IHCA survivors treated with TTM between 2011 and 2018 was conducted based on the Research Patient Database Registry of the Partners HealthCare system in Boston. Serum laboratory data were measured during IHCA and within 24 hours after TTM completion. Intra-arrest and post-TTM BCRs were calculated, respectively. The primary outcome was neurologic status at discharge. The secondary outcome was in-hospital mortality.The study included 84 patients; 63 (75%) were discharged with a poor neurologic status and 40 (47.6%) died. Regarding poor neurological outcome at discharge, multivariate analysis revealed that post-TTM BCR was a significant predictor (adjusted OR, 1.081; 95% CI, 1.002-1.165; p = 0.043) and intra-arrest BCR was a marginal predictor (adjusted OR, 1.067; 95% CI, 1.000-1.138; p = 0.050). Post-TTM BCR had an acceptably predictive ability to discriminate neurological status at discharge, with an area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve of 0.644 (95% CI, 0.516-0.773) and a post-TTM BCR cutoff value of 16.7 had a sensitivity of 61.9% and a specificity of 70.0%.Post-TTM BCR was a significant predictor of the neurologic outcome at discharge among IHCA patients receiving TTM. IHCA patients with elevated intra-arrest BCR also had a borderline poor neurological prognosis at discharge.

The outbreak of COVID-19 challenged the global health system and specifically impacted the emergency departments (EDs). Studying the quality indicators of ED care under COVID-19 has been a necessary task, and ED revisits have been used as an indicator to monitor ED performance.The study investigated whether discrepancies existed among ED revisiting cases before and after COVID-19 and whether the COVID-19 epidemic was a predictor of poor outcomes of ED revisits.Retrospective study.We used electronic health records data from a tertiary medical center. Data of patients with 72-h ED revisit after the COVID-19 epidemic were collected from February 2020 to June 2020 and compared with those of patients before COVID-19, from February 2019 to June 2019.The investigated outcomes included hospital admission, ICU admission, out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, and subsequent inhospital mortality. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to identify independent predictors of 72-h ED revisit outcomes.In total, 1786 patients were enrolled in our study - 765 in the COVID group and 1021 in the non-COVID group. Compared with the non-COVID group, patients in the COVID group were younger (53.9 vs. 56.1 years old; P = 0.002) and more often female (66.1% vs. 47.3%; P0.001) and had less escalation of triage level (11.6% vs. 15.0%; P = 0.041). The hospital admission and inhospital mortality rates in the COVID and non-COVID groups were 33.9% vs. 32.0% and 2.7% vs. 1.5%, respectively. In the logistic regression model, the COVID-19 period was significantly associated with inhospital mortality (adjusted odds ratio, 2.289; 95% confidence interval, 1.059-4.948; P = 0.035).Patients with 72-h ED revisits showed distinct demographic and clinical patterns before and after the COVID-19 epidemic; the COVID-19 period was an independent predictor of increased inhospital mortality.

OBJECTIVES Although several risk factors for outcomes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients have been identified, the cumulative risk of their combinations is not thoroughly clear, especially after targeted temperature management. Therefore, we aimed to develop a risk score to evaluate individual out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patient risk at early admission after targeted temperature management regarding poor neurologic status at discharge. DESIGN Retrospective observational cohort study. SETTING Two large academic medical networks in the United States. PATIENTS Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors treated with targeted temperature management with age of 18 years old or older. INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Based on the odds ratios, five identified variables (initial nonShockable rhythm, Leucocyte count 12 K/μL after targeted temperature management, total Adrenalin [epinephrine] ≥ 5 mg, lack of oNlooker cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and Time duration of resuscitation ≥ 20 min) were assigned weighted points. The sum of the points was the total risk score known as the SLANT score (range 0-21 points) for each patient. Based on our risk prediction scores, patients were divided into three risk categories as moderate-risk group (0-7), high-risk group (8-14), and very high-risk group (15-21). Both the ability of our risk score to predict the rates of poor neurologic outcomes at discharge and in-hospital mortality were significant under the Cochran-Armitage trend test (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The risk of poor neurologic outcomes and in-hospital mortality of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors after targeted temperature management is easily assessed using a risk score model derived using the readily available information. Its clinical utility needed further investigation.

Purpose Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is often required for patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD), and it can significantly reduce the need for endotracheal intubation. Currently, there is no standard method for predicting successful weaning from NIV. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate whether a weaning index can predict NIV outcomes of patients with AECOPD. Methods This study was conducted at a single academic public hospital in northern Taiwan from February 2019 to January 2021. Patients with AECOPD admitted to the hospital with respiratory failure who were treated with NIV were included in the study. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify independent predictors of successful weaning from NIV. Receiver operating characteristic curve methodology was used to assess the predictive capacity. Results A total of 85 patients were enrolled, 65.9% of whom were successfully weaned from NIV. BACKGROUND A recent study suggested to develop and implement more interacted material for preprocedural education to decrease patients' anxiety about the atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation. This study compared the effectiveness of using either newly developed virtual reality (VR) materials (VR group) or paper-based materials (paper group) on giving AF preprocedural education. METHODS This study consequentially enrolled 33 AF patients preparing for ablation from November 2019 to October 2020. After enrollment, patients were randomized as either paper (n = 22) or VR (n = 11) groups. RESULTS In comparison with the baseline stage, at the posteducation stage, the degree of improvement in patients' self-assessed self-efficacy on AF ablation knowledge was higher among VR group patients than those in the paper group. At the posteducation stage, the patients' satisfaction to preprocedural education and used materials were higher among the VR group than that among the paper group. In addition to meet their needs and give accurate medical information, VR group patients reported that VR materials increased the effectiveness of education, increased their preparedness for AF catheter ablation, achieved paperless purposes, and willing to recommend VR materials to others. Operators subjectively reported that the periprocedure cooperation was increased both among paper and VR group patients after preprocedural education for the details of procedure. Better preparedness of VR group patients was supported by less periprocedure pain, anxiety, and impatience than those among paper group patients. CONCLUSION Interactive VR-based materials are superior to the paper-based materials to provide patients immerse and imagine the journey and detail knowledge of AF catheter ablation before the procedure and better prepared patients for the procedure.

Objective/design/settingThis study aims to develop preprocedural communication-specific framework that emphasises the use of audiovisual materials and compares its acceptability by trainees with a regular module.TraineesBetween October 2018 and July 2021, 96 medical clerks were enrolled and randomly divided into regular and intervention groups. Background: Evidences that support the use of targeted temperature management (TTM) for in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) are lacking. We aimed to investigate the hypothesis that TTM benefits for patients with IHCA are similar to those with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and to determine the independent predictors of resuscitation outcomes in patients with cardiac arrest receiving subsequent TTM. Methods: This is a retrospective, matched, case-control study (ratio 1:1) including 93 patients with IHCA treated with TTM after the return of spontaneous circulation, who were admitted to Partners HealthCare system in Boston from January 2011 to December 2018. Controls were defined as the same number of patients with OHCA, matched for age, Charlson score, and sex. Survival and neurological outcomes upon discharge were the primary outcome measures. Results: Patients with IHCA were more likely to have experienced a witnessed arrest and receive bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation, a larger total dosage of epinephrine, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The time duration for ROSC was shorter in patients with IHCA than in those with OHCA. The IHCA group was more likely associated with mild thrombocytopenia during TTM than the OHCA group. Survival after discharge and favorable neurological outcomes did not differ between the two groups. Among all patients who had cardiac arrest treated with TTM, the initial shockable rhythm, time to ROSC, and medical history of heart failure were independent outcome predictors for survival to hospital discharge. The only factor to predict favorable neurological outcomes at discharge was initial shockable rhythm. Conclusion: The beneficial effects of TTM in eligible patients with IHCA were similar with those with OHCA. Initial shockable rhythm was the only independent predictor of both survival and favorable neurological outcomes at discharge in all cardiac arrest survivors receiving TTM.

Purpose This study aims to present an optical alignment and compensation control of die bonder for chips containing through-silicon vias and develop three-dimensional integrated circuit stacked packaging for compact size and multifunction. Design/methodology/approach The machine vision, optical alignment method and sub-pixel technology in dynamic imaging condition are used. Through a comparison of reference image, the chip alignment calibration can improve machine accuracy and stability. Findings According to the experimental data and preliminary results of the analysis, accuracy can be achieved within the desired range, and the accuracy is much better than traditional die bonder equipment. The results help further research in die bonder for chips containing through-silicon vias. Originality/value In subsequent testing of the chip, the machine can simultaneously test multiple chips to save test time and increase productivity.

Background Recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) is currently the most standard treatment for patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). However, rtPA treatment may further enhance the immune response post-stroke. This study is to investigate the clinical utility of white-blood-based inflammatory biomarkers in predicting neurologic outcomes among AIS patients receiving rtPA. Methods A retrospective observational cohort study of 100 patients with AIS treated with intravenous rtPA was conducted in an urban tertiary hospital in Taiwan. Favorable neurological outcome defined as modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score 0-2 in post-stroke follow-up was the primary outcome measure. Baseline and post-rtPA neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were investigated for potential predictors. Results These patients had a mean age of 71.3 ± 13.7 years and the average of initial National Institute of Health Stroke Scale was 12.7 ± 6.5. Using multiple regression analysis, PLR was not an independent factor, however, both baseline and post-rtPA NLR were independent factors predicting favorable neurological outcome at 3, 6, 12 months after a stroke. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for baseline and post-rtPA NLR were 0.645 (95% CI 0.537-0.753) and 0.769 (95% CI 0.676-0.862) (Z score = 2.086) in 3-month, 0.645 (95% CI 0.537-0.752) and 0.791 (95% CI 0.701-0.880) (Z score = 2.471) in 6-month and 0.646 (95% CI 0.538-0.754) and 0.813 (95% CI 0.728-0.898) (Z score = 2.857) in 12-month post-stroke follow-up. Conclusion For AIS patients treated with rtPA, both lower baseline and post-rtPA NLR levels were independently associated with a favorable neurologic outcome in serial mid- and long-term follow-up. Post-rtPA NLR was superior to baseline NLR in discriminative performance for neurologic prognosis.

BACKGROUND To determine the impact of body mass index (BMI) on clinical outcomes in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) survivors treated with targeted temperature management (TTM). METHODS We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 261 adult OHCA survivors who received complete TTM between January 2011 and December 2018 using data from the Research Patient Database Registry of Partners HealthCare system in Boston. Patients were categorized as underweight (BMI < 18.5 kg/m2), normal weight (BMI = 18.5-24.9 kg/m2), overweight (BMI = 25-29.9 kg/m2), and obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2), according to the World Health Organization classification. RESULTS The average BMI was 28.9 ± 7.1 kg/m2. Patients with a higher BMI had higher rates of hypertension and diabetes mellitus, and were more likely to be witnessed on collapse. Remote cruise control for care robot is proposed in this study, the robot module and virtual wireless network are integrated into a computer, and the robot is combined with multiple light sensors, a laser displacement module and CCD camera, which enable the robot to cruise on a flexible route. The cruise operation can be performed both on a fixed route and the shortest path. The central monitoring room can master any unexpected situation met during the cruise, track the object, avoid dead angles through many monitors, automatically avoid collisions, and can distinguish the outline of obstacles. If it meets a wall, it automatically corrects its direction and walks parallel to the wall. If it meets an irregular obstacle, the turning angle for avoidance is calculated by using the innovative virtual wall estimation in order to cruise autonomously.

The acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a devastating disease and remains the leading cause of death and disability. This study aims to evaluate the role of hematological inflammatory markers (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio [NLR], platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio [PLR], and systemic immune inflammation index [SII]) in predicting the neurological recovery in acute cerebrovascular events over 1-year follow-up.Adult patients diagnosed with AIS within 3 hours from January 2016 to December 2018 were recruited retrospectively. The modified Rankin Scale (mRS) was recorded upon admission to the emergency department (ED) and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after a stroke. The primary outcome measure was the neurological recovery. The neurological recovery was defined as an improvement in mRS score ≥ 1 compared with that at the ED admission baseline.A total of 277 consecutive adult patients with AIS within 3 hours were enrolled. The initial average of the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale was 9.2 ± 7.8, and 90.3% of patients had an mRS ≥ 2 at ED admission baseline. The overall neurological recovery rates of 48.7%, 53.7%, 59.2%, and 55.9% were observed at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months follow-up, respectively. The multivariate analysis revealed that the baseline NLR value was a significant predictor of neurological recovery at 3 months after a stroke (adjusted odds ratio = 0.89, 95% confidence interval = 0.80-0.99, P = .035).A low NLR at ED admission could be useful marker for predicting neurological recovery at 3 months after stroke.

Background This study applied a new strategy, termed high-turnover utility bed intervention , to offer early admission chances for emergency department (ED) patients and alleviate ED crowding. Methods This before-and-after observational cohort study was conducted at the ED of an urban tertiary hospital. On January 1, 2012, 14 utility beds were prepared exclusively for ED patient use. A strict 48-hour course limit for each patient was formulated to govern these high-turnover beds. The primary outcome measure for this study was ED length of stay. Secondary outcome measures were the number of ED admissions, patients who left without being seen, and revisits within 72 hours of discharge, as well as the outcomes of cardiac arrest management and ambulance diversion hours. Results There were 70,515 adult ED visits enrolled during the preintervention period (January–December 2011), and 69,706 during the postintervention period (July 2012–June 2013). In the postintervention period, this new strategy offered 1401 early admission opportunities. The ambulance diversion hours decreased prominently from 5.4 hours to 1.6 hours per day. A shortening in ED length of stay from 9.7 hours to 8.0 hours was achieved, mainly in cases of nontrauma. More patients (31.2% vs. 29.7%) were admitted to the wards with a lower discharge rate in the postintervention period. Additionally, there was no difference in ED revisit within 72 hours and cardiac arrest management. Conclusion The high-turnover ED utility bed intervention offered improved admission chance and alleviated ED crowding output. ED efficiency improved, with shortened ED length of stay and fewer ambulance diversion hours.

The human&ndash, machine interface with head control can be applied in many domains. This technology has the valuable application of helping people who cannot use their hands, enabling them to use a computer or speak. This study combines several image processing and computer vision technologies, a digital camera, and software to develop the following system: image processing technologies are adopted to capture the features of head motion, the recognized head gestures include forward, upward, downward, leftward, rightward, right-upper, right-lower, left-upper, and left-lower, corresponding sound modules are used so that patients can communicate with others through a phonetic system and numeric tables. Innovative skin color recognition technology can obtain head features in images. The barycenter of pixels in the feature area is then quickly calculated, and the offset of the barycenter is observed to judge the direction of head motion. This architecture can substantially reduce the distraction of non-targeted objects and enhance the accuracy of systematic judgment.

Background: In-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) is a catastrophic complication for patients while admitted in a medical institution. The outcome of IHCA remains poor, and understanding of the prognostic factors for survival outcome after IHCA is lacking, specifically in an oriental population. Methods: A retrospective observational cohort study of 382 patients with IHCA who required resuscitation was conducted in an urban tertiary hospital in Taiwan. Return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) and survival to hospital discharge were the primary outcome measures. Results: The incidence of IHCA was 3.25 per 1000 admissions. These patients had a mean age of 67.2 ± 21.7 years and were mostly men (66.5%). The rate of successful ROSC was 66%, and the rate of survival to hospital discharge was 11.8%. A stepwise decrease in ROSC was observed with additional resuscitation efforts. Independent predictors for survival to hospital discharge were being female, a resuscitation duration of 30 minutes), as observed in survival to hospital discharge. Conclusion: Based on data from a single hospital registry in East Asia, a shorter duration of resuscitation was demonstrated to be a predictor of immediate survival with ROSC and survival to hospital discharge.

Breakthrough Acinetobacter bacteremia during carbapenem therapy is not uncommon, and it creates therapeutic dilemmas for clinicians. This study was conducted to evaluate the clinical and microbiological characteristics of breakthrough Acinetobacter bacteremia during carbapenem therapy and to assess the efficacy of various antimicrobial therapies. We analyzed 100 adults who developed breakthrough Acinetobacter bacteremia during carbapenem therapy at 4 medical centers over a 6-year period. Their 30-day mortality rate was 57.0%, and the carbapenem resistance rate of their isolates was 87.0%. Among patients with carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter bacteremia, breakthrough bacteremia during carbapenem therapy was associated with a significantly higher 14-day mortality (51.7% versus 37.4%, respectively; P = 0.025 by bivariate analysis) and a higher 30-day mortality ( P = 0.037 by log rank test of survival analysis) than in the nonbreakthrough group. For the treatment of breakthrough Acinetobacter bacteremia during carbapenem therapy, tigecycline-based therapy was associated with a significantly higher 30-day mortality (80.0%) than those with continued carbapenem therapy (52.5%) and colistin-based therapy (57.9%) by survival analysis ( P = 0.047 and 0.045 by log rank test, respectively). Cox regression controlling for confounders, including severity of illness indices, demonstrated that treatment with tigecycline-based therapy for breakthrough Acinetobacter bacteremia was an independent predictor of 30-day mortality (hazard ratio, 3.659; 95% confidence interval, 1.794 to 7.465; P < 0.001). Patients with breakthrough Acinetobacter bacteremia during carbapenem therapy posed a high mortality rate. Tigecycline should be used cautiously for the treatment of breakthrough Acinetobacter bacteremia that develops during carbapenem therapy.

The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) and the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) offer different recommendations for carbapenem MIC susceptibility breakpoints for Acinetobacter species. In addition, the clinical efficacy of the intermediate category remains uncertain. This study was designed to determine the optimal predictive breakpoints based on the survival of patients with Acinetobacter bacteremia treated with a carbapenem. We analyzed the 30-day mortality rates of 224 adults who received initial carbapenem monotherapy for the treatment of Acinetobacter bacteremia at 4 medical centers over a 5-year period, according to the carbapenem MICs of the initial isolates. The 30-day mortality was about 2-fold greater in patients whose isolates had carbapenem MICs of ≥8 mg/liter than in those with isolates with MICs of ≤4 mg/liter. The differences were significant by bivariate analysis (53.1% [60/113] versus 25.2% [28/111], respectively; P < 0.001) and on survival analysis by the log rank test ( P < 0.001). Classification and regression tree analysis revealed a split between MICs of 4 and 8 mg/liter and predicted the same difference in mortality, with a P value of Acinetobacter bacteremia caused by isolates with carbapenem MICs of ≥8 mg/liter was an independent predictor of 30-day mortality (odds ratio, 4.218; 95% confidence interval, 2.213 to 8.039; P < 0.001). This study revealed that patients with Acinetobacter bacteremia treated with a carbapenem had a more favorable outcome when the carbapenem MICs of their isolates were ≤4 mg/liter than those with MICs of ≥8 mg/liter.

Purpose: Bloodstream infections (BSIs) caused by Acinetobacter species have been extensively reported, however, which majorly focused on respiratory tract infections. The risk of mortality and the effect of early catheter removal on survival in catheter-related BSIs (CRBSIs) caused by Acinetobacter spp. remain unclear. This study aims to investigate that. Methods: This is a retrospective multicentric study conducted in Taiwan from 2012 to 2014. Patients with at least 1 positive blood culture and catheter culture for the same Acinetobacter spp., showing symptoms and signs of CRBSIs, were included (n = 119). Risk factors for 30-day mortality were analyzed using a logistic regression model. The characteristics of patients with early catheter removal (within 48 hours after CRBSIs) were compared to those without removal matching for age, sex, and disease severity. Results: There were no differences in 30-day mortality with regard to causative Acinetobacter spp., catheter type, site, and appropriateness of antimicrobial therapy. Patients with higher Acute Physiologic and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II scores (odds ratio [OR]: 1.12; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.02-1.23; P = .014), shock (OR: 6.43; 95% CI: 1.28-32.33; P = .024), and longer hospitalization before CRBSIs (OR: 1.04; 95% CI: 1.00-1.08; P = .027) had a significantly higher 30-day mortality rate. Early removal of catheters after CRBSIs was not associated with better survival benefits. Conclusion: Higher disease severity (APACHE II score), shock, and longer hospitalization before bacteremia were independently associated with a higher 30-day mortality in CRBSIs caused by Acinetobacter spp. In previous published guidelines, infected catheters were suggested to be removed in CRBSIs caused by gram-negative bacilli. Even though early removal of catheters did not associate with a better survival outcome in current results, it should be judiciously evaluated according to the clinical conditions and risks individually. The clinical characteristics of patients with colistin-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii bacteraemia have been documented, but those of patients with bacteraemia caused by other Acinetobacter species remain unknown. Previous exposure to colistin has been shown to be associated with the emergence of colistin resistance, but may be not the only predisposing factor. In the current study, we highlight the risk and outcome of patients without previous exposure to colistin who acquired colistin-resistant Acinetobacter nosocomialis (ColRAN) bacteraemia. This 11-year single-centre retrospective study analysed 58 patients with ColRAN bacteraemia and 213 patients with colistin-susceptible A. nosocomialis (ColSAN) bacteraemia. Antimicrobial susceptibilities were determined with an agar dilution method. The clonal relationship of ColRAN isolates was determined with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. A conjugation mating-out assay was conducted to delineate the potential transfer of colistin resistance genes. Multivariable analysis was performed to evaluate the risk factors for ColRAN bacteraemia. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was independently associated with ColRAN bacteraemia (OR 3.04; 95% CI 1.45–6.37; p 0.003). Patients with ColRAN bacteraemia had higher APACHE II scores, but the two groups showed no significant differences in 14-day mortality (10.3% vs. 10.3%) or 28-day mortality (15.5% vs. 15.0%). ColRAN isolates had greater resistance than ColSAN isolates to all antimicrobial agents except for ciprofloxacin (0% vs. 6.6%). There were 16 different ColRAN pulsotypes, and two major clones were found. Colistin resistance did not transfer to colistin-susceptible A. baumannii or A. nosocomialis . These results show that COPD is an independent risk factor for acquisition of ColRAN bacteraemia. The mortality rates were similar between patients with ColRAN and ColSAN bacteraemia.
