1-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) can damage dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra in many mammals with biochemical and cellular changes that are relatively similar to those observed in Parkinson's disease. Our study examined whether MPTP-treated echolocation bats can cause changes in bat echolocation system. By considering ultrasound spectrums, auditory brainstem-evoked potentials and flight trajectories of normal bats, we observed that the vocal, auditory, orientation and movement functions of MPTP-treated bats were significantly impaired, and they exhibited various symptoms resembling those in patients with Parkinson's disease. Our immunohistochemistry and western blot analyses further indicated that expression of vocal-related FOXP2 in the superior colliculus, auditory-related otoferlin in the inferior colliculus, dopamine synthesis-related aromatic l-amino acid decarboxylase in the substantia nigra and dopamine receptor in the striatum was significantly decreased. Furthermore, protein expression related to inflammation, oxidative stress and apoptosis in the substantia nigra was significantly increased in MPTP-treated bats. These results indicate that inflammation, oxidative stress and apoptosis may be instrumental in dopaminergic neurodegeneration in the substantia nigra. The vocal, auditory and orientation and movement dysfunctions of MPTP-treated bats are relatively consistent with symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

In this study, the preparation procedures for the polysulfone (PSf) substrate and polyamide (PA) selective layers were systematically investigated to determine their effects on the separation performance of thin-film composite (TFC) forward osmosis (FO) membranes in terms of the permeate flux (Jw) and reverse solute flux (Js). Furthermore, the PA active layer was modified by adding different proportions of an emerging material, graphene oxide (GO), to increase Jw and decrease Js. The experimental results indicated that special attention should be paid to the preparation of the PSf casting solution, which required thorough degassing, sealing, and humidity and temperature control. The optimum casting height was discovered to be 175 μm. For PA layer formation, the same amount of polymer solutions (resulting thickness of 78.5 μm) on the top surface of the PSf substrate (on the side facing the water during phase inversion) resulted in the highest FO performance. GO modification of the PA layer at the dosage of 0.0175 wt% considerably enhanced Jw to 14 L m−2 h−1 and reduced Js to 0.23 mol m−2 h−1. However, higher GO dosage (0.02 wt%) led to lower membrane performance due to aggregation of GO nanoparticles, as confirmed using scanning electron microscopy. Next, the prepared membranes were applied to dye rejection and sludge concentration for water recovery. The virgin and modified FO membranes both exhibited high rejection efficiency (≥96.0 %) for dyes commonly used in the textile industry. The 0.0175 %-GO-modified FO membrane exhibited a higher concentration factor (1.67) and greater water recovery (40.0 %) than the virgin membrane (1.45 and 31.2 %, respectively). Therefore, the application of FO for water recovery is economic and environmentally friendly in terms of saving the transportation cost of sludge disposal while recovering water for reuse in wastewater treatment plants.

This study proposed a method for analysis of 10 phthalate esters compounds from wastewater treatment plant sludges. The analytical efficiency of GC-MS for of target compounds was verified by a standard mixture of phthalate esters. The response factors related to the respective internal standards from a five-point calibration curve quantified the phthalate esters in individual compounds. Based on the literature compiled by environmental agencies, new generation phthalate compounds have been developed, such as di-iso-nonyl phthalate (DiNP), di-iso-decyl phthalate (DiDP), as alternative to conventional phthalates. The analytical results showed that the total PAEs concentration was in the range from 7.4 to 138.6 mg kg

Exhaustive exercise may damage muscles due to oxidative stress and inflammation and cause muscle fatigue and soreness. The study investigated the effects of Chinese herbal supplements (CHS) B307 on muscle endurance after exhaustive swimming (ES). Thirty‐two male ICR mice were randomly divided into 4 groups: Sham + ES, pretreatment of CHS B307 + ES (Pre + ES), post‐treatment of CHS B307 + ES (Post + ES), and dual treatment of CHS B307 + ES (Dual + ES). All mice were subjected to ES in the form of a forced swimming test. Then, we compared ES time (EST) as the index of muscular endurance. Also, we examined the fatigue, oxidative stress, inflammation, and damage in the muscle tissue among these groups by using immunohistochemistry (IHC), chemiluminescence, and biochemical analysis. Our results revealed that those mice of Pre + ES and Dual + ES groups had remarkably better EST than those mice of Sham + ES and Post + ES groups. Those mice with oral treatment of CHS B307(Pre + ES, Post + ES, and Dual + ES groups) showed significantly reduced leukocyte counts in the urine, and reduced levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), neutrophils, and lactic acid in the blood than those mice of Sham + ES. In addition, those mice with oral treatment of CHS B307 (Pre + ES, Post + ES, and Dual + ES groups) showed significant alleviation of oxidative stress, inflammation, and damage in the muscle tissue than those mice of Sham + ES. Thus, we suggested that CHS B307 can be a functional sports supplement because it can enhance muscle endurance after exhaustive swimming via suppressing fatigue, oxidative stress, and inflammation., The study reported that Chinese herbal supplements B307 can be a functional sports supplement against exhaustive exercise.

Routine maintenance of fishing vessels and wastewater discharges are primary sources of heavy metals in fishing ports. Sediment pollution assessment is necessary in fishing port management, including sediment dredging and disposal, sewage treatment facility construction, and pollution source control. In this study, sediment heavy metal contents in Qianzhen Fishing Port, the largest pelagic fishery port in Taiwan, were investigated to assess the contamination levels and related potential ecological risks using multiple sediment pollution indices. Normalization methods were applied to identify the potential sources of heavy metals in fishing port sediments. Results showed that Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cr contents in the sediments of the inner fishing port (averages of 276, 742, 113, and 221 mg/kg, respectively) were 3–5 times greater compared to those along the port entrance and outside, indicating the strong impacts of anthropogenic pollution (EFCu: 5.6–12.5; EFZn: 2.8–4.3; EFPb: 2.4–5.4; EFCr: 1.1–3.2). Copper pollution was more severe, with high maxima contamination factor (CFCu: 15.1–24.8), probably contributed by copper-based antifouling paints used in fishing vessels. The sediments in the inner fishing port are categorized as having considerable ecological risk and toxicity (mERMq: 0.61–0.91; ΣTU: 7.5–11.7) that can potentially cause adverse effects on benthic organisms. Qianzhen Fishing Port sediments can be characterized as high Cu/Fe and Pb/Fe, moderate Zn/Fe, and high total grease content, indicating that the potential sources of heavy metals are primarily antifouling paints and oil spills from the fishing vessels. This study provides valuable data for pollution control, remediation, and environmental management of fishing ports.

This paper describes the fabrication, modification, and evaluation of the performance of thin-film composite (TFC) forward osmosis (FO) membranes for lab-scale aquaculture wastewater recovery using various fumed silica (SiO2) nanoparticles. The active polyamide (PA) layers of these membranes were novelly modified using different types of pretreated SiO2 nanoparticles [virgin SiO2, dried SiO2, and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES)-modified SiO2] and concentrations (0.05, 0,1, 0,2, and 0.4 wt%) to improve the membrane hydrophilicity with minimum particle agglomeration. Results show that the APTES-SiO2 modified membrane had the highest water flux and selectivity, followed by the dried-SiO2 modified membrane. The APTES coupling agent notably reduced the SiO2 aggregation on the membrane surface and improved membrane hydrophilicity. Consequently, high permeate flux and an acceptable reverse solute flux were observed. The optimal SiO2 concentration for PA modification was 0.1 wt% for all the nanoparticle types. The virgin and APTES-SiO2 modified membranes were used for aquaculture wastewater recovery. The water recovery rate reached 47% in 84 h when using the APTES-SiO2 modified membrane, while it reached only 26% in 108 h when using the virgin membrane. With a suitable design of the filtration apparatus and choice of draw solution (DS), the prepared novel TFC-FO membrane containing APTES-modified SiO2 can be used for recycling aquaculture wastewater into the DS, which can then be reused for other purposes.

A hepatoprotective medicine, Yang-Gan-Wan (YGW), was used to treat hepatic damage in cell and mouse models. We performed a 1,1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay and found that YGW exhibited a significantly high free radical scavenging ability. Furthermore, the results of the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay revealed that YGW treatment could alleviate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced damage in Kupffer cells (liver macrophages). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay results demonstrated that YGW treatment could alleviate LPS-induced inflammation in Kupffer cells by inhibiting the expression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-1β. By quantifying the serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), we found that YGW treatment could alleviate hepatic damage and improve immunity in acetaminophen- (APAP-) treated mice by inhibiting the expression of ALT and AST. The findings of hematoxylin and eosin and Masson’s trichrome staining indicated that YGW treatment could alleviate hepatic damage and reduce collagen fiber formation in the liver tissue of APAP-treated mice. Furthermore, immunohistochemistry staining and Western blot results showed that YGW treatment could alleviate oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in the liver tissue of APAP-treated mice by enhancing superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) expression but inhibiting TNF-α and caspase 3 expression. Our results suggest that YGW treatment exerted hepatoprotective effects on LPS-treated Kupffer cells and APAP-treated mice by inhibiting oxidation, inflammation, and apoptosis.

Imidacloprid, a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide, has led to a decline in the honey bee population worldwide. An invertebrate insect prey with neonicotinoid toxicity can adversely affect insectivores, such as echolocating bats. The aim of the current study was to examined whether imidacloprid toxicity may interfere echolocation system such as vocal, auditory, orientation, and spatial memory systems in the insectivorous bat. By comparing the ultrasound spectrum, auditory brainstem-evoked potential, and flight trajectory, we found that imidacloprid toxicity may interfere functions in vocal, auditory, orientation, and spatial memory system of insectivorous bats (Hipposideros armiger terasensis). As suggested from immunohistochemistry and western blots evidences, we found that insectivorous bats after suffering imidacloprid toxicity may decrease vocal-related FOXP2 expressions in the superior colliculus, auditory-related prestin expressions in the cochlea, and the auditory-related otoferlin expressions in the cochlea and the inferior colliculus, and cause inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction-related apoptosis in the hippocampal CA1 and medial entorhinal cortex. These results may provide a reasonable explanation about imidacloprid-induced interference of echolocation system in insectivorous bats.

The degradation rates and kinetics of one commonly used iodinated contrast medium, iohexol, were investigated and compared during ultraviolet (UV) photolysis, UV/H2O2 and UV/ S 2 O 8 2 − advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Results indicate that the iohexol degradation rate increased in the order of UV/H2O2 S 2 O 8 2 − and followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. Increasing persulfate concentration significantly increased iohexol degradation rate, whereas increasing H2O2 concentration caused reverse effect. Radical scavenging test results show that UV photolysis, OH and radicals all contributed to iohexol degradation during UV/ S 2 O 8 2 − , but OH was the main contributor during UV/H2O2 and was consumed by excess H2O2. The kinetic models of iohexol degradation by both AOPs were developed, and the reaction rate constants with OH and were calculated as 5.73 (±0.02) × 108 and 3.91 (±0.01) × 1010 M−1 s−1, respectively. Iohexol degradation rate remained stable at pH 5–9 during UV irradiation and UV/H2O2, but gradually decreased at pH 5–7 and remained stable at pH 7–9 during UV/ S 2 O 8 2 − . The presence of anions displayed inhibitory effects on iohexol degradation during UV/ S 2 O 8 2 − in the order of Cl − > HCO 3 − ≫ S O 4 2 − . UV/ S 2 O 8 2 − AOP exhibited high degradation efficiency and stability on the basis of UV irradiation, which can be applied as a promising degradation method for iohexol. UV/ S 2 O 8 2 − AOP can effectively mineralize iohexol to CO2 but promoted the generation of toxic iodoform (CHI3), and the subsequent chlorination had the potential to reduce the content of disinfection by-products; therefore, further evaluation of possible environmental hazards is warranted.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of lightweight aggregate (LWA) made from dredged harbor sediment and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag to increase their reutilization. The effects of preheating, sintering and raw materials proportion on the properties of LWA were discussed in term of particle density, water absorption, and compressive strength. Microscopic structure, water-soluble chloride and heavy metals leachability of the LWA were also examined. Results showed that the mixture of the dredged harbor sediment and BOF slag under the manufacturing process with preheating temperature at 500 °C for 10 min and sintering temperature at 1175 °C for 15 min was conducive to be a low water absorption and high strength LWA, which had as low as 1.73 g cm−3 and 3.45% for dry particle density and water absorption respectively. Its compressive strength reached 23.2 MPa when the addition of BOF slag was up to 27%. The LWA prepared in this study also have very low water-soluble chloride and heavy metals leachability, all compliant with Taiwan regulatory standards, thus would be suitable for further civil engineering application. The results of this study provide useful information on co-treating of wastes and recycled resources as LWA.

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are a group of ubiquitous organic environmental contaminants. Engineered ferromanganese-bearing sludge-derived biochar (SDB), synthesized using one-step pyrolysis in the temperature range between 300 and 900 °C, was used to enable Fenton-like processes that decontaminated PAE-laden sediments. SDB was thoroughly characterized using scanning electron microscopy energy-dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area, thermogravimetric analysis, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and fluorescence excitation–emission matrix spectroscopy coupled with parallel factor analysis. The maximum PAE degradation was remarkable at 90% in 12 h at pH 6.0 in the presence of 1.7 g L−1 of SDB 900. The highly-effective PAE degradation was mainly attributed to the synergism between FeOx and MnOx, which strengthened the activation of percarbonate (PC) via electron transfer, hydroxy addition, and hydrogen abstraction through radical (HO•) and nonradical (1O2) oxidation mechanisms, thereby facilitating PAE catalytic degradation over SDB in real sediments, which clearly proved the efficacy of ferromanganese-bearing SDB and PC for the remediation of contaminated sediments. The cytotoxicity exhibited by human skin keratinocyte cells exposure to high SDB concentration (100–400 µg mL−1) for 24–48 h was low indicating insignificant cellular toxicity and oxidative damages. This study provides a new strategy for freshwater sludge treatment and reutilization, which enables a water-cycle-based circular economy and waste-to-resource recycling.

The study focuses on a methodology providing noninvasive monitoring and evaluation of the antitumor effect of traditional Chinese medicine, cantharides complex (canth), on 4T1 breast tumor cells. Digital holographic tomography (DHT) and developed data post-processing algorithms were used for quantitative estimation of changes in optical and morphological parameters of cells. We calculated and compared data on the refractive index, thickness, and projected area of 4T1 breast tumor cells in control untreated specimens and those treated with doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX), canth, and their combinations. Post-treatment changes in cellular morphology recorded by DHT demonstrated that the two drugs led to noticeably different morphological changes in cells that can be presumably associated with different pathways of their death, apoptosis, or necrosis. The effect of combined treatment with these two drugs strongly depended on their relative concentrations and could lead to changes characteristic either for DOX or for canth; however, being more profound than those obtained when using each drug solely. The results obtained by DHT are in a good correspondence with commonly used cell viability analysis and immunofluorescent analysis of changes in cellular cytoskeleton.

Doxorubicin (DOX), a chemotherapeutic drug, often causes many adverse side effects in patients with cancer, such as weight loss, motor disability, blood circulation defects, myelosuppression, myocardial injury, joint degeneration, and bone loss. The Chinese herbal medicine Guilu Erxian Glue (GEG) has been used in the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis for hundreds of years, with considerably fewer side effects. We expected that GEG could serve as a protective and beneficial alternative treatment for DOX-induced adverse side effects. In this study, we evaluated whether GEG can alleviate DOX-induced weight loss, motor disability, abnormal blood circulation, myelosuppression, myocardial injury, joint degeneration, and bone loss by using chemotherapy models of synoviocyte cell line HIG-82 and mice. Moreover, we examined the antioxidant capacity of GEG by using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) free-radical scavenging. Our results revealed that GEG treatment can significantly enhance DPPH free-radical scavenging and reduce DOX-induced cytotoxicity in synoviocyte HIG-82 cells. In addition, GEG treatment for 2 weeks can significantly relieve weight loss, enhance exhaustive exercise capacity, improve blood circulation, alleviate myocardial oxidative stress and inflammation, and strengthen the tibias of DOX-treated mice. Thus, we suggest that GEG treatment can be a protective and alternative therapy for alleviating chemotherapy-related side effects such as weight loss, motor disability, blood circulation defects, and bone loss.

Weanling piglets often develop respiratory diseases such as pneumonia because they encounter substantial environmental stress. This study investigated an alternative herbal feed additive, Guizhi Li-Zhong Tang (GLZ), for preventing pneumonia in weanling piglets. An in vitro experiment demonstrated that GLZ has high antioxidant capacity and low cytotoxicity toward Kupffer cells. In addition, GLZ treatment can alleviate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced damage in Kupffer cells. A total of 94 4-week-old piglets were randomly divided into three groups, which received sham treatment, 0.2% Tilmicosin antibiotic (TAB) treatment, or 0.2% GLZ treatment. Piglets receiving the GLZ treatment had a higher survival rate and higher immunoglobulin G levels but lower allergy-related eosinophil levels and cough incidence than did piglets receiving the sham or 0.2% TAB treatments. Through immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis, we discovered that piglets receiving the 0.2% GLZ treatment had significantly higher expression of antioxidant-related SOD2 and lower expression of oxidative-stress-related 3-NT ( p < 0.01 ), inflammation-related TNF-α ( p < 0.01 ) and NF-κB ( p < 0.05 ), and apoptosis-related caspase-3 ( p < 0.01 ) in lung tissue than did piglets receiving the sham or 0.2% TAB treatment. Therefore, GLZ treatment is promising as an alternative to antibiotic medicine for weanling piglets because of its protective antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic effects in lung tissue.

Weaning piglets often suffer from pneumonia during growth, so in general, antibiotics are used by owners to make piglets grow smoothly. However, antibiotics may be accompanied by many side effects such as gastrointestinal discomfort and allergies. The aim of this study was to develop an alternative antibiotic herbal veterinary medicine for alleviating pneumonia in weanling piglets. As observed in the pig ranches, many weanling piglets suffer from the pneumonia and also show high expression of angiotensin‐converting enzyme 2 (ACE‐2) in their respiratory and intestinal tracts. ACE inhibitors have been reported that can decrease pneumonia risk through their main mechanism of action. Thus, we also try to find alternative antibiotic feed additives that can reduce expression of ACE‐2 in piglets. We selected the Guizhi Li‐Zhong Tang Extract Granules (GLZ) as a natural product for piglets. Then, we compared the serum immunoglobulin levels of piglets with sham, tilmicosin antibiotic (TAB), and GLZ treatments. Our results showed that piglets with GLZ treatment had significantly a higher expression of immunoglobulin A and immunoglobulin G but a lower expression of immunoglobulin E than those with sham and TAB treatments. In addition, piglets with GLZ treatment showed obviously low pneumonia incidence than those with sham and TAB treatments. Similarly, piglets with GLZ treatment showed significantly lower expressions of ACE‐2 in their tracheal, bronchial, and lung tissues than those with sham and TAB treatments. GLZ seems to be an alternative ACE inhibitor that can decrease pneumonia risk through inhibiting ACE‐2 expression and alleviating allergies in their respiratory systems. Thus, we suggest that GLZ can be an alternative antibiotic feed additive for weaning piglets., Schematic diagram illustrates that GLZ treatment can protect the respiratory system of weanling piglets from allergies and respiratory symptoms because of reducing ACE‐2 expression in the respiratory systems.

In this study, we examined the role of the eastern bent-winged bat (Miniopterus fuliginosus) in the dispersion of bat adenovirus and bat alphacoronavirus in east Asia, considering their gene flows and divergence times (based on deep-sequencing data), using bat fecal guano samples. Bats in China moved to Jeju Island and/or Taiwan in the last 20,000 years via the Korean Peninsula and/or Japan. The phylogenies of host mitochondrial D-loop DNA was not significantly congruent with those of bat adenovirus (m2XY = 0.07, p = 0.08), and bat alphacoronavirus (m2XY = 0.48, p = 0.20). We estimate that the first divergence time of bats carrying bat adenovirus in five caves studied (designated as K1, K2, JJ, N2, and F3) occurred approximately 3.17 million years ago. In contrast, the first divergence time of bat adenovirus among bats in the 5 caves was estimated to be approximately 224.32 years ago. The first divergence time of bats in caves CH, JJ, WY, N2, F1, F2, and F3 harboring bat alphacoronavirus was estimated to be 1.59 million years ago. The first divergence time of bat alphacoronavirus among the 7 caves was estimated to be approximately 2,596.92 years ago. The origin of bat adenovirus remains unclear, whereas our findings suggest that bat alphacoronavirus originated in Japan. Surprisingly, bat adenovirus and bat alphacoronavirus appeared to diverge substantially over the last 100 years, even though our gene-flow data indicate that the eastern bent-winged bat serves as an important natural reservoir of both viruses.

Bi2WO6 (BW) and SnO2/Bi2WO6 composites (SnBWs) were synthesized by a single-step solvothermal process. Four SnO2/BW molar ratios, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5 and 1 were used to generate 0.1SnBW, 0.25SnBW, 0.5SnBW and 1SnBW. The surface characteristics of BW, SnO2 and SnBWs were elucidated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), transmission electron microscopy, specific surface area analysis, UV–vis spectrophotometry, photoluminescence spectrophotometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. C.I. Reactive Red 2 (RR2) was used as a target pollutant to compare the photocatalytic activities of the prepared SnBWs. The effects of RR2 concentration and photocatalyst dosage on RR2 photodegradation were elucidated. The XRD results revealed that all of the peaks of SnBWs in XRD patterns could be assigned to SnO2 or BW, and no other peak was found, indicating that SnO2 and BW were successfully composited. The band gaps of SnO2, BW, 0.1SnBW, 0.25SnBW, 0.5SnBW and 1SnBW were estimated to be 3.75, 2.85, 2.95, 2.94, 2.93 and 2.97 eV, which correspond to RR2 photodegradation rates under simulated solar light irradiation of 0.0025, 0.0255, 0.0333, 0.0279, 0.0408 and 0.0174 min−1. 0.5SnBW had the highest photocatalytic activity in RR2 photodegradation. The RR2 photodegradation rate increased as the 0.5SnBW dose increased, but decreased as the RR2 concentration increased. The results of adding scavengers suggested that the photogenerated holes were the main oxidative species in RR2 photodegradation in the 0.5SnBW system. The findings of this study suggest that the effective suppression of the recombination of electron–hole pairs in 0.5SnBW may improve the photocatalytic activity of 0.5SnBW over those of pure BW and SnO2.

The effects of salinity on the photodegradation and mineralization of sulfonamides in the UV/TiO2 system were investigated. The goals of this study were to analyze the effects of pH and salinity on the sulfonamide concentration and total organic carbon (TOC) during the removal of sulfonamides in a UV/TiO2 system. Four sulfonamides – sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfamethizole (SFZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and sulfathiazole (STZ) - were selected as parent compounds. The photodegradation and mineralization rates of sulfonamides in the UV/TiO2 system satisfy pseudo-first-order kinetics. Direct photolysis degraded sulfonamides but sulfonamides cannot be mineralized. The photodegradation and mineralization rate constants in all experiments followed the order pH 5 > pH 7 > pH 9. At pH 5, the mineralization rate constants of SMX, SFZ, SDZ and STZ were 0.015, 0.009, 0.012 and 0.011 min−1, respectively. The addition of NaCl inhibited the mineralization of the four tested sulfonamides more than it inhibited their photodegradation. The inhibitory effect of chloride ions on the removal of sulfonamides in the UV/TiO2 system was attributed to the scavenging by chloride ions of hydroxyl radicals (HO•) and holes and the much lower reactivity of chlorine radicals thus formed, even though the chlorine radicals were more abundant than HO•.
