Image deraining aims to mitigate the adverse effects of rain streaks on image quality. Recently, the advent of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and Vision Transformers (ViTs) has catalyzed substantial advancements in this field. However, these methods fail to effectively balance model efficiency and image deraining performance. In this paper, we propose an effective, locally enhanced visual state space model for image deraining, called DerainMamba. Specifically, we introduce a global-aware state space model to better capture long-range dependencies with linear complexity. In contrast to existing methods that utilize fixed unidirectional scan mechanisms, we propose a direction-aware symmetrical scanning module to enhance the feature capture of rain streak direction. Furthermore, we integrate a local-aware mixture of experts into our framework to mitigate local pixel forgetting, thereby enhancing the overall quality of high-resolution image reconstruction. Experimental results validate that the proposed method surpasses state-of-the-art approaches on six benchmark datasets.

Remote sensing images are inevitably affected by the degradation of haze with complex appearance and non-uniform distribution, which remarkably affects the effectiveness of downstream remote sensing visual tasks. However, most current methods principally operate in the original pixel space of the image, which hinders the exploration of the frequency characteristics of remote sensing images, resulting in these models failing to fully exploit their representation ability to produce high-quality images. This paper proposes a frequency-oriented remote sensing dehazing Transformer named FOTformer, to explore information in the frequency domain to eliminate disturbances caused by haze in remote sensing images. It contains three components. Specifically, we developed a frequency-prompt attention evaluator to estimate the self-correlation of features in the frequency domain rather than the spatial domain, improving the image restoration performance. We propose a content reconstruction feed-forward network that captures information between different scales in features and integrates and processes global frequency domain information and local multi-scale spatial information in Fourier space to reconstruct the global content under the guidance of the amplitude spectrum. We designed a spatial-frequency aggregation block to exchange and fuse features from the frequency domain and spatial domain of the encoder and decoder to facilitate the propagation of features from the encoder stream to the decoder and alleviate the problem of information loss in the network. The experimental results show that the FOTformer achieved a more competitive performance against other remote sensing dehazing methods on commonly used benchmark datasets.

Recent studies found that the intestinal flora is involved in the occurrence and development of CRC. In particular, Ruminococcus shows a decreased abundance in patients with CRC and can affect gastrointestinal health through cross-feeding and promoting butyrate production. Although the research on Ruminococcus is gradually increasing, no unified understanding of its influence on the occurrence and development of CRC has been established. This work summarizes the relationship of Ruminococcus with CRC and its possible anticancer mechanism to provide a theoretical basis for the further exploration of biological prevention and treatment of CRC in the future.

IntroductionMultiple factors, including human disturbance and environmental change, have caused a significant global mangrove resource loss. Therefore, the Chinese government has restructured mangrove habitats and restored the ecosystem functionality through establishing naturally protected mangrove areas. Despite efforts spanning several years, over 90% of mangrove forests in China have been now integrated into the natural protected area system, with the health status and influencing factors of mangrove ecosystem remaining a pertinent subject for further exploration. Given the intricacies of mangrove ecosystems with complex nonlinear relationships among evaluation factors, it is imperative to adopt scientific methodologies to assess their health status.MethodsTo illustrate this, we conducted a mangrove ecosystem health assessment of natural protected areas of Guangdong Province, China. By employing a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method and establishing an index system for mangrove ecosystem health assessment.ResultsThe results revealed the following findings. (1) Various factors exert differing degrees of influence on mangrove ecosystem health. Notably, the mangrove habitat pattern (weight 47.95%), bird diversity (weight 20.97%), mangrove community (weight 14.31%), water environment (weight 11.76%), and soil sedimentary environment (weight 5.01%) were identified. (2) Overall, the mangrove ecosystem within protected areas of Guangdong exhibited unhealthy signs. There were 4 healthy protected areas (20.00%), 4 areas classified as sub-healthy (20.00%), and 12 were deemed unhealthy (60.00%). (3) Key factors contributing to the compromised health of mangrove ecosystems included the homogenization of mangrove plants, decreased habitat diversity, and exogenous pollution.DiscussionBy planting local mangrove species, scientifically managing the ratio of mangrove cover area to mudflat area, and controlling pollution sources and treating pollutants, the structure of the mangrove ecosystem can be optimized, and the quality of mangrove forest can be improved. These findings can enhance mangrove ecosystem management practices, assist mangrove natural reserve managers in performing targeted mangrove ecological protection and restoration, promote effective management, and contribute to the realization of “harmonious symbiosis” between humanity and nature within mangrove ecosystems.

Abstract Background Adaptive immunity is an important disease mediator of pulmonary vascular remodeling during pulmonary hypertension (PH) development, especially T‐cells lymphocytes. However, data for bibliometric analysis of T cell immunity in PH is currently vacant. This aimed to provide a comprehensive and visualized view of T‐cells research in PH pathogenesis and to lay a solid foundation for further studies. Methods The data was acquired from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Web of Science analytic tool was used to analysis the publication years, authors, journals, countries, and organizations. CiteSpace 6.2.R3, VOSviewer 1.6.16, and Scimago Graphica 1.0.35.0 were applied to conduct a visualization bibliometric analysis about authors, countries, institutions, journals, references, and keywords. Results Nine hundred and eight publications from 1992 to 2022 were included in the analysis. The results showed that Humbert Marc was the most prolific author. American Journal of Physiology Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology had the most related articles. The institution with the most articles was Udice French Research University. The United States was far ahead in the article output. Keywords analysis showed that “Pulmonary hypertension” was the most usually appeared keyword in the relevant literature, and included “T‐cells”, “Regulatory T cells”, and “Activated T cell.” “miRNA” of reference co‐citation clustering analysis demonstrated the possible T‐cell immunity activation mechanisms in PH. The most cited literature was published in the European Heart Journal by Galie N in 2016. The strongest citation burst of keyword is “gene expression” and terms such as “vascular remodeling,” “growth,” “proliferation,” and “fibrosis” are among the list, indicating that T‐cells interact with stromal vascular cells to induce pulmonary vascular remodeling. The strongest burst of cited reference is “Galie N, 2016.” Conclusions T‐cell immunity is an important pathogenesis mechanism for PH development, which may have interaction with miRNAs and stromal vascular cells, but the possible T‐cell immunity activation mechanisms in PH need to be investigated further.

Growing evidence has suggested a strong link between gut microbiota and host fitness, yet our understanding of the assembly mechanisms governing gut microbiota remains limited. Here, we collected invasive and native freshwater snails coexisting at four independent sites in Guangdong, China. We used high-throughput sequencing to study the assembly processes of their gut microbiota. Our results revealed significant differences in the diversity and composition of gut microbiota between invasive and native snails. Specifically, the gut microbiota of invasive snails exhibited lower alpha diversity and fewer enriched bacteria, with a significant phylogenetic signal identified in the microbes that were enriched or depleted. Both the phylogenetic normalized stochasticity ratio (pNST) and the phylogenetic-bin-based null model analysis (iCAMP) showed that the assembly process of gut microbiota in invasive snails was more deterministic compared with that in native snails, primarily driven by homogeneous selection. The linear mixed-effects model revealed a significant negative correlation between deterministic processes (homogeneous selection) and alpha diversity of snail gut microbiota, especially where phylogenetic diversity explained the most variance. This indicates that homogeneous selection acts as a filter by the host for specific microbial lineages, constraining the diversity of gut microbiota in invasive freshwater snails. Overall, our study suggests that deterministic assembly-mediated lineage filtering is a potential mechanism for maintaining the diversity of gut microbiota in freshwater snails.

Background To make the question text represent more information and construct an end-to-end text clustering model, we propose a double-target self-supervised clustering with multi-feature fusion (MF-DSC) for texts which describe questions related to the medical field. Since medical question-and-answer data are unstructured texts and characterized by short characters and irregular language use, the features extracted by a single model cannot fully characterize the text content. Methods Firstly, word weights were obtained based on term frequency, and word vectors were generated according to lexical semantic information. Then we fused term frequency and lexical semantics to obtain weighted word vectors, which were used as input to the model for deep learning. Meanwhile, a self-attention mechanism was introduced to calculate the weight of each word in the question text, i.e., the interactions between words. To learn fusing cross-document topic features and build an end-to-end text clustering model, two target functions, L cluster and L topic, were constructed and integrated to a unified clustering framework, which also helped to learn a friendly representation that facilitates text clustering. After that, we conducted comparison experiments with five other models to verify the effectiveness of MF-DSC. Results The MF-DSC outperformed other models in normalized mutual information (NMI), adjusted Rand indicator (ARI) average clustering accuracy (ACC) and F1 with 0.4346, 0.4934, 0.8649 and 0.5737, respectively.

The accurate detection of multiplex collagen biomarkers is vital for diagnosing and treating various critical diseases such as tumors and fibrosis. Despite the attractive optical properties of quantum dots (QDs), it remains technically challenging to create stable and specific QDs-based probes for multiplex biological imaging. We report for the first time the construction of multi-color QDs-based peptide probes for the simultaneous fingerprinting of multiplex collagen biomarkers in connective tissues. A bipeptide system composed of a glutathione (GSH) host peptide and a collagen-targeting guest peptide (CTP) has been developed, yielding CTP-QDs probes that exhibit exceptional luminescence stability when exposed to ultraviolet irradiation and mildly acidic conditions. The versatile bipeptide system allows for facile one-pot synthesis of high-quality multicolor CTP-QDs probes, exhibiting superior selectivity in targeting critical collagen biomarkers including denatured collagen, type I collagen, type II collagen, and type IV collagen. The multicolor CTP-QDs probes have demonstrated remarkable efficacy in simultaneously fingerprinting multiple collagen types in diverse connective tissues, irrespective of their status, whether affected by injury, diseases, or undergoing remodeling processes. The innovative multicolor CTP-QDs probes offer a robust toolkit for the multiplex fingerprinting of the collagen suprafamily, demonstrating significant potential in the diagnosis and treatment of collagen-related diseases.

This essay aims to comparatively study the microscopic morphology and grinding properties of brazed diamonds with amorphous and crystalline filler alloy in the case of rare-earth Nd-doped modified Ni-based filler alloy. The results show that at the same content of Nd, Cr7C3 is mainly generated at the brazing interface of crystalline samples. In contrast, Cr27C6 is mainly generated at the brazing interface of amorphous samples. Amorphous solder material achieves a robust chemical metallurgical union, producing a dense and homogeneous carbide layer. The bonding strength between amorphous solder material and diamond is further enhanced. The addition of rare earth element Nd contributes greatly to the forming ability of amorphous filler alloy. Nd atoms in the amorphous solder material readily bond with Ni atoms, reducing the chemical corrosion of Ni atoms on diamonds and resulting in a lower degree of graphitization. When the amount of Nd added is 1.0 wt%, the morphology of amorphous filler alloy brazing diamond is more complete than the effect of the crystalline state, the degree of thermal damage is lower, and the surface of amorphous filler alloy brazing is smoother. Frictional wear experiments show that the amorphous filler alloy holds diamond better than the crystalline filler alloy, and the diamond specimens prepared with the amorphous filler alloy demonstrate a significantly superior grinding performance in comparison to the diamond specimens prepared with the crystalline filler alloy.

Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma (PSC) is a rare and aggressive subtype of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that is characterized by poor differentiation and invasiveness. According to the World Health Organization, PSC exhibits sarcoma or sarcomatoid differentiation and typically presents with an insidious onset, lacking specific symptoms and signs. It is associated with high malignancy, early metastasis, short survival time, and a poor prognosis. Treatment for PSC follows a similar approach to NSCLC; however, it presents significant challenges due to its high resistance to chemotherapy. Previous research has demonstrated the coexistence of two or more target mutations in PSC, and the presence of multiple mutations is correlated with higher mortality rates compared to single mutations. This is supported by our case study of a male patient with advanced BUBIB-ALK rearrangement and KRAS G12C missense mutation. There is currently no standard treatment protocol available for patients with this condition. The patient showed rapid progression after 1 month of alectinib treatment and was intolerant to paclitaxel + cisplatin chemotherapy. Following this, successful disease control was achieved with a combination therapy of sintilimab and anlotinib. The patient achieved a progression-free survival (PFS) of over 20 months, and long-term follow-up is still ongoing for the patient. Based on our clinical experience, the combination of anlotinib and programmed death-1 (PD-1) inhibitors may be a promising strategy for PSC patients, particularly those with multi-target mutations who do not respond to ALK-TKI and are resistant to chemotherapy.

Abstract Pomacea canaliculata was by far one of the most harmful invasive organisms in the world, causing serious harm to aquatic crops and ecosystem. Calcium carbonate is a common component of aquatic environment, which is important for the growth of Pomacea canaliculata. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the response characteristics of P. canaliculata suffered shell breakage to the addition of calcium carbonate in water environment. In this experiment, we explored the effects of calcium carbonate addition on the P. canaliculata shell repair rate, food intake, egg production, shell strength, and calcium content through breaking the snails shell and the addition of calcium carbonate treatment. The results showed that snail broken-shell repaired mostly within 21 days. The snails experienced a significant increase in shell repair rates during earlier days of the treatment, especially for female snails. Food intake of snails exhibited different patterns when their shells were broken and calcium carbonate was added. Shell breakage treatment combined with calcium carbonate addition significantly increased the diameter of snail eggs compared with the control and the calcium carbonate addition treatment without shell-broken snail group. There was no significant difference in shell strength or calcium content of male snails between the treatments. The study suggests that P. canaliculata exhibits a sex-dependent response pattern when subjected to shell damage and calcium carbonate addition. The findings can provide some references to better understand the invasion mechanism and survival strategy of the P. canaliculata.

Abstract Objective The study aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis of mucosal immunity in IgA nephropathy (IgAN) and indicate its current status, hot sopts, and direction of future studies. Methods The literature data was collected from the Web of Science Core Collection. CiteSpace 6.1.R3 was employed to conduct a visualization bibliometric analysis of mucosal immunity in IgA nephropathy, including authors, countries, journals, keywords, organizations, references, the bursts of keywords and references, and the timeline of keyword clusters and reference clusters. Results A total of 315 publications from 1990 to 2022 were included. The number of articles in this field has increased in recent years. Suzuki H, Coppo R, and Feehally J took the first place parallelly with 18 articles. Japan contributes the most articles, accounting for 27.3% of all the publications. The institutions with the most publications were Juntendo University and University of Alabama Birmingham. 453 keywords were concluded in the analysis, which mainly focus on the mucosal pathogenesis and therapy of the IgAN. The top five co‐cited reference cluster are “aberrantly glycosylated IgA,” “corticosteroids,” “animal models,” “o‐glycosylationm” and “microRNA‐630.” The most recently burst of keyword is “tonsillectomy” and “gut.” Conclusion This was the first bibliometric analysis to systematically analyze the mucosal immunity in IgAN, which obtained the current status and indicated the future research hotspots and development trends. The gut microbiota and the related therapy‐targeted mucosal immunity might be the future research hotspot.

BackgroundImmune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-associated cardiotoxicity is a relatively uncommon immune-related adverse effects (irAEs) with a high mortality rate. There are few recommendations for the replacement of different immune checkpoint inhibitors in domestic and international reports.Case presentationWe report a case of a patient with squamous non-small cell lung carcinoma (squamous NSCLC) who developed cardiotoxicity after being treated with a programmed death-1 (PD-1) inhibitor and then changed to a PD-L1 inhibitor to continue the treatment. A significant benefit was observed after four cycles of immunotherapy, and no further cardiotoxicity occurred after the treatment was started.ConclusionThis case demonstrates that myocardial damage induced by tislelizumab (PD-1 inhibitor) can be improved after switching to sugemalimab (PD-L1 inhibitor) and that antitumor immunotherapy is effective. This result may have important implications for optimizing immunotherapy management regimens in cancer patients.

The stability of contemporary ice shelves is under threat due to global warming, and the geological records in the Ross Sea offer such an opportunity to test the linkage between them. However, the absence of calcareous microfossils in the sediments of the Ross Sea results in uncertainties in establishing a precise chronology for studies. Hence, three sediment cores were collected and studied in terms of radiocarbon dating, magnetic susceptibility, and sediment grain size to reconstruct the environmental processes in the Ross Sea since the last glacial period. The main results are as follows: (1) two grain-size components were identified for the studied cores, which can be correlated to ice-shelf and sea-ice transport, respectively; (2) due to old-carbon contamination and an inconsistent carbon reservoir, the radiocarbon dates were generally underestimated, and as an alternative, changes in magnetic susceptibility of the studied cores can be tuned to the ice-core records to establish a reliable age–depth model and; (3) integrating sediment grain-size changes and comparisons with other paleoenvironmental proxies in the Antarctic, a process from a sub-ice sheet in the last glacial period to a sub-ice shelf in the glacial maximum, and, finally, to a glaciomarine state since the last deglacial period was identified in the western Ross Sea. Integrating these findings, the warming processes in the Antarctic were highlighted in the retreat processes of the Ross Ice Shelf in the past.

Background: We aimed to explore the relationship between the serum Soluble Scavenger with 5 Domains (SSC5D) levels and heart failure (HF).Methods and Results: We retrospectively enrolled 276 patients diagnosed with HF or normal during hospitalization in Shanghai General Hospital between September 2020 and December 2021. Previously published RNA sequencing data were re-analyzed to confirm the expression profile of SSC5D in failing and non-failing human and mouse heart tissues. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction assay was used to quantify Ssc5d mRNA levels in murine heart tissue after myocardial infarction and transverse aortic constriction surgery. To understand the HF-induced secreted proteins profile, 1,755 secreted proteins were investigated using human dilated cardiomyopathy RNA-seq data, and the results indicated that SSC5D levels were significantly elevated in failing hearts compared to the non-failing. Using single-cell RNA sequencing data, we demonstrated that Ssc5d is predominantly expressed in cardiac fibroblasts. In a murine model of myocardial infarction or transverse aortic constriction, Ssc5d mRNA levels were markedly increased compared with those in the sham group. Similarly, serum SSC5D levels were considerably elevated in the HF group compared with the control group [15,789.35 (10,745.32–23,110.65) pg/mL, 95% CI (16,263.01–19,655.43) vs. 8,938.72 (6,154.97–12,778.81) pg/mL, 95% CI (9,337.50–11,142.93); p < 0.0001]. Moreover, serum SSC5D levels were positively correlated with N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (R = 0.4, p = 7.9e-12) and inversely correlated with left ventricular ejection fraction (R = −0.46, p = 9.8e-16).Conclusion: We concluded that SSC5D was a specific response to HF. Serum SSC5D may function as a novel biomarker and therapeutic target for patients with HF.

Chemotherapy combined with targeted therapy is a first-line and second-line treatment for metastatic colorectal cancer(mCRC), which has brought survival benefits to mCRC patients, however, disease progression is inevitable. More than 60% of patients still needed third-line treatment after the progress of second-line treatment. After the failure of second-line chemotherapy, treatment compliance and the physical tolerance of patients both decrease. Therefore, choosing an appropriate third-line treatment regimen is key to prolonging survival and improving quality of life. As a novel cytotoxic antitumor drug, trifluridine/tipiracil (TAS-102) is composed of trifluridine (FTD) and tipiracil hydrochloride (TPI). FTD can directly bind to the DNA of cancer cells to cause DNA dysfunction, thereby exerting antitumor effects. TPI can inhibit the degradation of FTD, thereby increasing its cytotoxicity. The few side effects of TAS-102 has become an important reason why clinicians present it as a treatment option to the patient for consideration, clinical trial data for progression free survival are lacking. The exploration of third-line treatment regimens with drug combinations has attracted much attention. This article reports a case of metastatic colon cancer (RAS/BRAF wild type, pMMR/Non-MSI-H), after failure of first-line and second-line therapies, the patient was eventually treated with anlotinib combined with TAS-102 as the third-line treatment. The treatment has shown good efficacy, with a long PFS benefit for more than 20 months and mild adverse reactions. This case reports demonstrates that anlotinib combined with TAS-102 is a promising third-line treatment regimen for refractory mCRC, and provides proof-of-concept for the clinical exploration of optimal third-line combination treatment regimens.

Rapid urbanization has intensified habitat fragmentation and shrinkage of waterbirds, threatening the sustainable development of waterbird diversity. Urban waterbird restoration can be achieved by considering suburban waterbirds as the source of restoration of urban waterbird diversity and by overcoming the separation between urban and suburban populations. Optimal design of ecological corridors is the most effective approach to facilitate movement of waterbirds. However, three challenges to applying ecological corridors to urban waterbird diversity restoration remain: (1)identifying focal species for the ecological corridor network; (2)identifying nodes in the ecological corridor; (3) assigning priority for design of the different areas in the corridor. The aim of this study was to develop methods to resolve these challenges using the design of a waterbird ecological corridor in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in Southern China as a case study. Under the proposed methods, it is hoped that waterbird recovery will occur in the city, characterized by a complex three-dimensional space, thereby promoting an increase in urban waterbird diversity.

BackgroundPrognostic effect of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is not fully clear yet, this study was designed to elucidate baseline characteristics of CKD patients with different severities of PH, the association between kidney indicators and PH severity, and survival factors in CKD patients with PH.MethodsWe extracted clinical data from electronic medical records of all patients diagnosed with PH in CKD from Jan 2016 to Dec 2020, and those with comorbid conditions causing PH were excluded. CKD stages were defined by estimated glomerular filtration rate thresholds. PH was defined as a systolic pulmonary artery pressure (sPAP) >35 mmHg estimated using echocardiograms. Demographics, clinical data, and test results were analyzed, and all-cause mortality data were obtained.ResultsA total of 137 patients were included in the study. The mean age of the participants was 60 (42.5, 67) years, the mean sPAP was 58 (51, 69.5) mmHg, and 40.9% of the patients were women. Moderate PH group had more patients undergoing dialysis and higher frequency of coronary heart disease. Moderate-severe PH group had higher parathyroid hormone levels and lower low-density lipoprotein levels. Severe PH group had better kidney function parameters and lower serum phosphorus levels. PH severity had no direct relationship with CKD stages. In the univariate analysis, age and PH severity influenced survival. Multivariate analysis also showed independent prognostic effects for age and sPAP. Kaplan-Meyer curve intuitively displayed the survival differences among CKD patients with different PH severity. Predictor values of nomogram identified from survival analyses enabled calculation of death probabilities for CKD with PH patients. Nomogram was validated by ROC analysis.ConclusionsPH begins with early-stage CKD, and PH severity is not related to CKD progression. A higher pulmonary artery pressure and an older age are associated with an increased risk of death.

Allogeneic amnion tissues have been widely used in tissue repair and regeneration, especially a remarkable trend of clinical uses in chronic wound repair. The virus inactivation procedures are necessary and required to be verified for the clinical use and approval of biological products. Cobalt-60 (Co-60) or electron-beam (e-beam) is the common procedure for virus and bacterial reduction, but the excessive dose of irradiation was reported to be harmful to biological products. Herein, we present a riboflavin (RB)-ultraviolet light (UV) method for virus inactivation of amnion and chorion tissues. We used the standard in vitro limiting dilution assay to test the viral reduction capacity of the RB-UV method on amnion or chorion tissues loaded with four types of model viruses. We found RB-UV was a very effective procedure for inactivating viruses of amnion and chorion tissues, which could be used as a complementary method to Co-60 irradiation. In addition, we also screened the washing solutions and drying methods for the retention of growth factors.

As the frequency of droughts increases with climate change, the tolerance of aquatic organisms to abiotic stressors will become critical determinants of survival. Pomacea canaliculata has become a widely distributed agricultural and environmental pest in southern China. To evaluate their tolerance and adaptation under the drought condition, the survival, feeding, behavior, and antioxidant system changes in female and male P. canaliculata were investigated during drought stress and rewatering process through an indoor simulation experiment. The results showed that female snails laid eggs before burrowing into the soil to ensure offspring reproduction. Female P. canaliculata had higher survival rates than males under drought stress, and their recovery ability of activity after rewatering was also superior to those of males. The antioxidant system of P. canaliculata showed obvious activation with gender differences after rewatering. Overall, the survival rate of female P. canaliculata was higher after drought stress, and the resilience ability of female snails after rewatering was stronger, including in their behavior, feeding, and antioxidant system recovery. The P. canaliculata tolerance to drought and the ability to recover quickly after drought may contribute to their long-term survival and facilitate continuous invasion.

Phlebopus portentosus is a favorite wild, edible mushroom in the tropical region of China and northern Thailand. P. portentosus is the only bolete in the Boletales order that has been commercially cultivated. Sclerotia produced by the mushroom are often found in its natural habitats and cultivated media. These sclerotia play a key role in its life cycle. However, the regularity and growth characteristics of the sclerotium are unknown. In this paper, the whole process of birth, growth, death and rebirth of the sclerotium of P. portentosus under natural and lab conditions is reported for the first time. Sclerotium formation in nature is due to environmental stress, such as drought or low temperature. The less rainfall, the more sclerotia are produced. It appears that a lower temperature can also initiate sclerotium formation; however, the relationship between sclerotium formation and temperature is not as clear as that between sclerotium formation and rainfall. Under artificial conditions, the sclerotium formation of P. portentosus is related to the fungus’ physiological maturation. The presence of sclerotia is always accompanied by the exudation of liquid droplets on the colony. The results of this study should provide a platform for research on the importance of sclerotium formation in the life cycle of P. portentosus.

The present study presents the tertiary assembly of a POM, peptide, and biogenic amine, which is a concept to construct new hybrid bio-inorganic materials for antibacterial applications and will help to promote the development of antivirus agents in the future. To achieve this, a Eu-containing polyoxometalate (EuW10) was first co-assembled with a biogenic amine of spermine (Spm), which improved both the luminescence and antibacterial effect of EuW10. Further introduction of a basic peptide from HPV E6, GL-22, induced more extensive enhancements, both of them being attributed to the cooperation and synergistic effects between the constituents, particularly the adaptive responses of assembly to the bacterial microenvironment (BME). Further intrinsic mechanism investigations revealed in detail that the encapsulation of EuW10 in Spm and further GL-22 enhanced the uptake abilities of EuW10 in bacteria, which further improved the ROS generation in BME via the abundant H2O2 involved there and significantly promoted the antibacterial effects.

Abstract Background Cellulose is not only a common component in vascular plants, but also has great economic benefits for paper, wood, and industrial products. In addition, its biosynthesis is highly regulated by carbohydrate metabolism and allocation in plant. MdFRK2, which encodes a key fructokinase (FRK) in apple, showed especially high affinity to fructose and regulated carbohydrate metabolism. Results It was observed that overexpression of MdFRK2 in apple decreased sucrose (Suc) and fructose (Fru) with augmented FRK activity in stems, and caused the alterations of many phenotypic traits that include increased cellulose content and an increase in thickness of the phloem region. To further investigate the involved mechanisms, we generated FRK2-OE poplar lines OE#1, OE#4 and OE#9 and discovered (1) that overexpression of MdFRK2 resulted in the huge increased cellulose level by shifting the fructose 6-phosphate or glucose 6-phsophate towards UDPG formation, (2) a direct metabolic pathway for the biosynthesis of cellulose is that increased cleavage of Suc into UDP-glucose (UDPG) for cellulose synthesis via the increased sucrose synthase (SUSY) activity and transcript levels of PtrSUSY1, (3) that the increased FRK activity increases the sink strength overall so there is more carbohydrate available to fuel increased cambial activity and that resulted in more secondary phloem. These results demonstrated that MdFRK2 overexpression would significantly changes the photosynthetic carbon flux from sucrose and hexose to UDPG for increased cellulose synthesis. Conclusions The present data indicated that MdFRK2 overexpression in apple and poplar changes the photosynthetic carbon flux from sucrose and hexose to UDPG for stem cellulose synthesis. A strategy is proposed to increase cellulose production by regulating sugar metabolism as a whole.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important food crops in the world, and starch is the main component of its endosperm. Transcriptional regulation plays a vital role in starch biosynthesis. However, it is not well understood in maize. We report the identification of the transcription factor ZmNAC126 and its role in regulation of starch synthesis in maize. Transcriptional expression of ZmNAC126 was higher in maize endosperm and kernels than in roots or stems. ZmNAC126 shared a similar expression pattern with starch synthesis genes during seed development, and its expression pattern was also consistent with the accumulation of starch. ZmNAC126 is a typical transcription factor with a transactivation domain between positions 201 and 227 of the amino acid sequence, is located in the nucleus, and binds to CACG repeats in vitro. Yeast one-hybrid assay revealed that ZmNAC126 bound the promoters of ZmGBSSI, ZmSSIIa, ZmSSIV, ZmISA1, and ZmISA2. Transient overexpression of ZmNAC126 in maize endosperm increased the activities of promoters pZmSh2, pZmBt2, pZmGBSSI, pZmSSIIIa, and pZmBT1 but inhibited the activities of pZmISA1 and pZmISA2. ZmNAC126 thus acts in starch synthesis by transcriptionally regulating targeted starch synthesis-related genes in maize kernels.

Pomacea canaliculata is native to South America and has become a widely distributed agricultural and environmental pest in southern China. Previous studies have primarily focused on the tolerance of P. canaliculata to various environmental factors, and compared non-native invasive P. canaliculata with natives or non-invasive congeners. However, there has been no research concentrated on variation in innate growth and reproductive characteristics between P. canaliculata in its native and invaded areas. To address this gap, we conducted the first comparison experiment between P. canaliculata from their native area (Argentina) and from an invaded area (China). We recorded the temporal dynamics of shell height of male and female P. canaliculata, and investigated the sexual maturation and egg-related indicators in two populations from each country, rearing them under homogeneous temperature, photoperiod and food conditions. Our results showed that the shell growth rate of P. canaliculata in Argentina was significantly lower than that of P. canaliculata in China. Moreover, P. canaliculata exhibited stronger reproductive characteristics in populations from China, mainly reflected in the earlier sexual maturity, larger egg masses, higher hatching success, and a trend of shorter incubation period. These differences probably arose due to contemporary evolution in invaded areas under strong selective pressures in rice fields, and, together with more favorable climates, enable the snail populations to rapidly grow and expand in southern China.

The spatial details injection model has been considered as a general framework in the literature of pansharpening, and recently there have been significant advances in this framework based on sparse representation (SR) of spatial details. However, the SR-based methods have greater computational burden in estimating the sparse vectors and limited ability in detail edge preservation. In this article, we introduce the neighbor embedding (NE) instead of SR-based model and the edge-preserving filter into the spatial detail injection framework to address the aforementioned two drawbacks. By utilizing the best quality of NE, we propose the detail injection via NE (DINE) algorithm for pansharpening, and DINE+, an improved variant of DINE by using the edge-preserving filter to enhance the spatial details. Experiments carried on three datasets captured by different satellite sensors and compared with current state-of-the-art methods validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Inherent complexity of plant metabolites necessitates the use of multi-dimensional information to accomplish comprehensive profiling and confirmative identification. A dimension-enhanced strategy, by offline two-dimensional liquid chromatography/ion mobility-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (2D-LC/IM-QTOF-MS) enabling four-dimensional separations (2D-LC, IM, and MS), is proposed. In combination with in-house database-driven automated peak annotation, this strategy was utilized to characterize ginsenosides simultaneously from white ginseng (WG) and red ginseng (RG). An offline 2D-LC system configuring an Xbridge Amide column and an HSS T3 column showed orthogonality 0.76 in the resolution of ginsenosides. Ginsenoside analysis was performed by data-independent high-definition MSE (HDMSE) in the negative ESI mode on a Vion™ IMS-QTOF hybrid high-resolution mass spectrometer, which could better resolve ginsenosides than MSE and directly give the CCS information. An in-house ginsenoside database recording 504 known ginsenosides and 58 reference compounds, was established to assist the identification of ginsenosides. Streamlined workflows, by applying UNIFI™ to automatedly annotate the HDMSE data, were proposed. We could separate and characterize 323 ginsenosides (including 286 from WG and 306 from RG), and 125 thereof may have not been isolated from the Panax genus. The established 2D-LC/IM-QTOF-HDMSE approach could also act as a magnifier to probe differentiated components between WG and RG. Compared with conventional approaches, this dimension-enhanced strategy could better resolve coeluting herbal components and more efficiently, more reliably identify the multicomponents, which, we believe, offers more possibilities for the systematic exposure and confirmative identification of plant metabolites.

Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a highly malignant, rapidly developing group of diseases with poor biological behavior. Most patients have extensive-stage SCLC (ES-SCLC) when they are first diagnosed. Standard chemotherapy is prone to relapse in a short period of time, and the patients’ median overall survival (OS) can reach only 13 months when chemotherapy is given in combination with PD-L1 inhibitors. To date, no studies have verified the efficacy and safety of the composite treatment of ES-SCLC with penpulimab and anlotinib despite some recognized data and advantages related to this regimen. Penpulimab, a novel PD-1 inhibitor with an IgG1 subtype, has a structural modification of the Fc segment which can prevent the immune cells from being phagocytosed or killed and can steadily avoid tumor immune escape. This case report describes a 71-year-old man who had ES-SCLC for 7 years which progressed after receiving standard systemic chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy. The third-line treatment of four cycles of anlotinib and carilizumab was discontinued because of grade 2 immune-related pneumonia despite the efficacy being evaluated as stable disease. After maintaining 22 months of progression-free survival, the patient relapsed and switched to a safer regimen of penpulimab combined with anlotinib to continue the treatment for four cycles. Partial response evaluation was confirmed twice, and the patient remained in good general condition. The combination of penpulimab and anlotinib can positively regulate the therapeutic effect by simultaneously acting on the tumor microenvironment and promoting blood vessel normalization. In general, this case provides support for the successful possibility of a rechallenge with immune checkpoint inhibitors, the better clinical efficacy of cross-line therapy with anlotinib, and the drug safety of penpulimab, suggesting a beneficial therapy for the clinical treatment of ES-SCLC.

The diverse habitat of the coastal areas of Guangdong, China, supports important waterbird populations, thereby contributing to the conservation of waterbirds in China and globally. The sensitivity of different waterbirds to environmental driving factors results in differences in habitat selection, which in combination affect waterbird abundance. This study investigated the effects of environmental and human disturbance factors on the abundance of waterbirds based on a survey of waterbirds in coastal areas of Guangdong Province, China. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was mainly used to study the relationships between the abundance of waterbirds and environmental and human factors. The results showed that the areas of mangrove and tidal flats were the main factors driving the abundance of shorebirds and open water waterbirds, whereas the areas of mangrove and water bodies were the main factors driving the abundance of wading birds and waterfowl, respectively. Road length and the areas of construction land were found to have negative effects on the abundance of waterbirds. A waterbird protection and management strategy was proposed based on the results.

In spectrometer measurement, it is very important to accurately calibrate the wavelength of all target characteristic spectra. Although wavelength calibration methods have long been investigated, no techniques have been designed for the scanning, double-layer, secondary diffraction, linear-array CCD spectrometer, to the best of our knowledge. Based on the grating diffraction equation and experimental results, a mathematical model of wavelength calibration was established for the scanning, double-layer, secondary diffraction, linear-array CCD spectrometer. In this study, a robust, full-screen, wavelength calibration algorithm is proposed, based on the related working principle and the requirements of both accuracy and robustness. The detailed steps are as follows. First, we established a wavelength calibration model at central pixels, following the grating diffraction equation. Then, according to the relationship between the difference in pixels and the feedback values of the grating ruler, a model was established to show the association between these factors. Finally, we combined the two models and built a full-screen wavelength calibration model. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that the proposed calibration algorithm is an excellent calibration tool, which can conveniently and accurately calibrate the wavelengths of central and non-central pixels at the same time.

Abstract Background Fargesia macclureana (Poaceae) is a woody bamboo species found on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) approximately 2000 ~ 3800 m above sea level. It rarely blossoms in the QTP, but it flowered 20 days after growing in our lab, which is in a low-altitude area outside the QTP. To date, little is known regarding the molecular mechanism of bamboo flowering, and no studies of flowering have been conducted on wild bamboo plants growing in extreme environments. Here, we report the first de novo transcriptome sequence for F. macclureana to investigate the putative mechanisms underlying the flowering time control used by F. macclureana to adapt to its environment. Results Illumina deep sequencing of the F. macclureana transcriptome generated 140.94 Gb of data, assembled into 99,056 unigenes. A comprehensive analysis of the broadly, specifically and differentially expressed unigenes (BEUs, SEUs and DEUs) indicated that they were mostly involved in metabolism and signal transduction, as well as DNA repair and plant-pathogen interactions, which may be of adaptive importance. In addition, comparison analysis between non-flowering and flowering tissues revealed that expressions of FmFT and FmHd3a, two putative F. macclureana orthologs, were differently regulated in NF- vs F- leaves, and carbohydrate metabolism and signal transduction were two major KEGG pathways that DEUs were enriched in. Finally, we detected 9296 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) that may be useful for further molecular marker-assisted breeding. Conclusions F. macclureana may have evolved specific reproductive strategies for flowering-related pathways in response to photoperiodic cues to ensure long vegetation growing period. Our findings will provide new insights to future investigations into the mechanisms of flowering time control and adaptive evolution in plants growing at high altitudes.

The ambient population has been regarded as an important indicator for analyzing or predicting thefts. However, the literature has taken it as a homogenous group and seldom explored the varied impacts of different kinds of ambient populations on thefts. To fill this gap, supported by mobile phone trajectory data, this research investigated the relationship between ambient populations of different social groups and theft in a major city in China. With the control variables of motivated offenders and guardianship, spatial-lag negative binominal models were built to explore the effects of the ambient populations of different social groups on the distribution of theft. The results found that the influences of ambient populations of different social groups on the spatial distribution of theft are different. Accounting for the difference in the “risk–benefit” characteristics among different activity groups to the offenders, individuals from the migrant population are the most likely to be potential victims, followed by suburban and middle-income groups, while college, affluent, and affordable housing populations are the least likely. The local elderly population had no significant impact. This research has further enriched the studies of time geography and deepened routine activity theory. It suggests that the focus of crime prevention and control strategies developed by police departments should shift from the residential space to the activity space.

Clay minerals are common in geological samples and are useful paleoclimate and sediment provenance proxies. Acid pretreatment is the most common method for the separation and purification of clay minerals. Given that hydrochloric acid (HCl) can dissolve chlorite and distinguish it from kaolinite, the HCl digestion method is used to simplify the routine method of clay mineral analysis. However, there have been few studies of the effects of acid digestion on different clay minerals in the context of extracting paleoclimate indicators. In this study, we used illite, chlorite, kaolinite, and two types of smectite to assess the effects of pretreatment with different HCl concentrations at variable temperatures. Our results show that chlorite is the most soluble clay mineral in HCl and can be effectively dissolved in HCl with concentrations of >1 N. The variable crystal structure of smectite affects its solubility in HCl. Ca-rich smectite, which has more cation substitution of octahedral Al, can be dissolved with HCl. However, Na-rich smectite, which has less cation substitution for octahedral Al, is hardly dissolved in HCl of any concentration or at any temperature. Illite can be partly dissolved in HCl, and the threshold beyond which dissolution occurs is 5 N HCl at 70 °C. Kaolinite is relatively difficult to dissolve in HCl. Given that the HCl digestion method uses the peak intensity of the bulk sample X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, whereas the routine method uses the peak area of clay particles, we compared the results of clay mineral quantification and the paleoclimate proxy obtained using the two methods for synthetically prepared mixed and natural clay samples. The results obtained with the HCl digestion method are less accurate than those obtained with the routine method because of the dissolution of illite and smectite in HCl. Therefore, the HCl pretreatment method is not suitable for clay mineral analysis in paleoclimate studies. The present results provide reference data for future studies that employ the acid dissolution pretreatment of clay mineral samples to acquire and quantify paleoclimate proxies.

Nowadays, pitch motors play an important role in many manufacturing plants. To ensure the other components run normally, it is urgent to automatically monitor the running state of pitch motors and early warning faults to avoid huge losses at a later period. Based on the normal behavior modeling technique, this paper studies the status monitoring of the pitch motors. Based on the fact that the state of the motor varies with time, we propose to train an echo state network with the SCADA data to predict the temperature of the pitch motor. Subsequently, the EWMA (exponentially weighted moving average) technique is used to set the alarm limit lines of each parameter. By employing some real data collected in a wind farm in China to conduct experiments, the results show that in comparison with several other methods, the proposed method can more effectively identify and early warn the faults of the pitch motor.

Abstract Paleobotanical and sedimentological records indicate that marked climatic and environmental transitions had taken place in East China by the early Miocene. These transitions were driven by paleogeographic and global climatic shifts, but the respective roles of these shifts in the Asian climate remain unclear. Here, we use the low‐resolution Norwegian Earth System Model and Community Atmosphere Model version 4 to compare the effects of Tibetan Plateau (TP) growth, Paratethys Sea retreat and global cooling on the East Asian climate change that occurred by the early Miocene. The modeling results indicate that these three factors had clearly different climatic effects in East China. In particular, TP growth increased annual precipitation in East China, while Paratethys Sea retreat and global cooling generally decreased annual precipitation in East China. In addition, the three factors studied all drove aridification in inland Asia. Considering the increased precipitation, arid/semiarid‐to‐humid shift in vegetation and high plant diversity present in East China by the early Miocene, as shown in geological records, TP growth thus played a major role in these respects.

The answer selection task is one of the most important issues within the automatic question answering system, and it aims to automatically find accurate answers to questions. Traditional methods for this task use manually generated features based on tf-idf and n-gram models to represent texts, and then select the right answers according to the similarity between the representations of questions and the candidate answers. Nowadays, many question answering systems adopt deep neural networks such as convolutional neural network (CNN) to generate the text features automatically, and obtained better performance than traditional methods. CNN can extract consecutive n-gram features with fixed length by sliding fixed-length convolutional kernels over the whole word sequence. However, due to the complex semantic compositionality of the natural language, there are many phrases with variable lengths and be composed of non-consecutive words in natural language, such as these phrases whose constituents are separated by other words within the same sentences. But the traditional CNN is unable to extract the variable length n-gram features and non-consecutive n-gram features. In this paper, we propose a multi-scale deformable convolutional neural network to capture the non-consecutive n-gram features by adding offset to the convolutional kernel, and also propose to stack multiple deformable convolutional layers to mine multi-scale n-gram features by the means of generating longer n-gram in higher layer. Furthermore, we apply the proposed model into the task of answer selection. Experimental results on public dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed model in answer selection.

Diatoms constitute an important part of the phytoplankton community in lakes and reservoirs and play a significant role in regulating ecological balance. Danjiangkou Reservoir is the water source area of the middle route of China’s South-to-North Water Diversion project. In order to explore the spatial and temporal distribution and know the governing factors of the diatom community, 18srRNA sequencing was carried out from seven sampling sites of the reservoir. At the same time, the concentration of nutrients present in the collected sample water was also determined. The results showed that a total of 51 genera and 96 species were thriving the community of diatoms in Danjiangkou Reservoir. Discostella was dominant in summer and autumn, accounting for 98.84% and 62.71% of the diatom abundance, respectively. Aulacoseira was dominant in spring and winter, accounting for 60.62% and 60.90%, respectively. Discostella and Aulacoseira showed significant differences in seasonal variation (p < 0.05). The colinear network of diatoms changed significantly with the seasons, mainly consisting of Aulacoseira, Discostella, and Stephanodiscus. RDA redundancy analysis showed that water temperature (WT), total nitrogen (TN), NH4+-N, pH, and electrical conductivity (Cond) were the main environmental factors driving the changes in diatom community structure.

Fraud crime against seniors has become a serious social problem both at home and abroad. While most of the relevant research focuses on non-contact fraud against seniors, a few studies attend to contact fraud targeted at seniors. By constructing a theoretical framework of “environment–activity–fraud victimization” based on the integration of multiple theories, this study conducts a multilevel logit analysis of contact-fraud victimization among urban seniors in the downtown area of Guangzhou at the individual and neighborhood levels. The results show that contact-fraud victimization among urban seniors is influenced by individual-level factors and neighborhood-level factors, and that individual-level factors play a more significant role. More specifically, seniors with higher education levels and lower levels of self-control are more likely to experience contact-fraud victimization, while seniors who are older and healthier, and have higher household income are significantly less likely to experience contact-fraud victimization. Further, higher levels of collective efficacy and better living environments in the neighborhood significantly reduce the probability of contact-fraud victimization among urban seniors, while the percentage of the migrant population, the percentage of the aging population, and developed traffic environments significantly increase the probability of seniors experiencing contact fraud. This study confirms the feasibility of examining contact-fraud victimization among urban seniors based on the integration of theories, and enriches the research results of crime geography in terms of contact-fraud victimization among urban seniors.

OBJECTIVE:Cognitive impairment is common among hemodialysis patient, but still lack adequate screening in clinical settings. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is reportedly to be a sensitive screening tool for cognitive impairment, but its clinical value in patients undergoing hemodialysis is not well established. We aimed to validate the utility of the Beijing version of the MoCA (MoCA-BJ) for detecting cognitive impairment in comparison to a detailed neuropsychological battery as the gold standard. METHODS:We assessed 613 patients undergoing hemodialysis using the MoCA-BJ, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Cognitive dysfunction was defined by the fifth version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V). Spearman's correlation and linear regression were used to estimate the performance of the MoCA-BJ and MMSE in predicting cognitive impairment. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the utility of various cutoffs of the MoCA-BJ and MMSE for predicting cognitive impairment. RESULTS:Cognitive impairment was diagnosed in 80.91% (496/613), 75.69% (464/613), and 61.34% (376 /613) of the patients using the DSM-V, MoCA-BJ, and MMSE, respectively. Background. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) seriously affects the health of mothers and infants. The high-glucose-induced inhibition in trophoblast cell viability is an important event in GDM pathogenesis. This study evaluated the expression and clinical significance of miR-136 in GDM patients, and the biological function and related mechanisms of miR-136 in the regulation of trophoblast cell proliferation were explored. Methods. The expression of miR-136 in serum and placenta of GDM patients was measured using quantitative Real-Time PCR. Trophoblast cells were stimulated with high-glucose medium to mimic the pathological changes of GDM, and the effect of miR-136 was examined by CCK-8 assay. A luciferase reporter assay was used to confirm the target gene of miR-136, and the relationship of E2F transcription factor 1 (E2F1) with miR-136 in GDM was further analyzed. Results. miR-136 expression was significantly elevated in GDM serum and tissue samples. By high-glucose treatment, trophoblast cell proliferation was inhibited and miR-136 expression was promoted. The knockdown of miR-136 could promote the proliferation of trophoblast cells exposed to high glucose, whereas the overexpression of miR-136 could suppress it. In addition, E2F1 was identified as a target gene of miR-136, which could mediate the regulatory effect of miR-136 on trophoblast cell proliferation. Conclusion. Collectively, miR-136 expression is increased in both serum and placental tissues in GDM patients, and miR-136 mediates the inhibiting effect of high glucose on trophoblast cell viability by targeting E2F1.

The Collaborative Filtering (CF) recommendation algorithm, one of the most popular algorithms in Recommendation Systems (RS), mainly includes memory-based and model-based methods. When performing rating prediction using a memory-based method, the approach used to measure the similarity between users or items can significantly influence the recommendation performance. Traditional CFs suffer from data sparsity when making recommendations based on a rating matrix, and cannot effectively capture changes in user interest. In this paper, we propose an improved hybrid collaborative filtering algorithm based on tags and a time factor (TT-HybridCF), which fully utilizes tag information that characterizes users and items. This algorithm utilizes both tag and rating information to calculate the similarity between users or items. In addition, we introduce a time weighting factor to measure user interest, which changes over time. Our experimental results show that our method alleviates the sparsity problem and demonstrates promising prediction accuracy.

This paper empirically evaluates two kinds of features, which are extracted, respectively, with traditional statistical methods and convolutional neural networks (CNNs), in order to improve the performance of seismic patch image classification. In the latter case, feature vectors, named “CNN-features”, were extracted from one trained CNN model, and were then used to learn existing classifiers, such as support vector machines. In this case, to learn the CNN model, a technique of transfer learning using synthetic seismic patch data in the source domain, and real-world patch data in the target domain, was applied. The experimental results show that CNN-features lead to some improvements in the classification performance. By analyzing the data complexity measures, the CNN-features are found to have the strongest discriminant capabilities. Furthermore, the transfer learning technique alleviates the problems of long processing times and the lack of learning data.

Abstract VEGF-C is essential for lymphangiogenesis during development and tumor progression. VEGFR-3 is the well-known cognate receptor of VEGF-C to regulate lymphatic migration and proliferation, but the receptor of VEGF-C in regulating lymphatic sprouting, the initiating step of lymphangiogenesis, still remains elusive. Here we use both in vitro and in vivo methods to demonstrate CD146 as a receptor of VEGF-C to regulate lymphangiogenesis, especially at the sprouting step. Mechanistically, CD146 selectively activates the downstream p38 kinase, upon VEGF-C stimulation, to regulate lymphatic sprouting. Moreover, CD146 can also activate ERK to mediate VEGF-C regulation of the subsequent proliferation and migration of lymphatic endothelial cells. In zebrafish embryos, knockdown or dysfunction of CD146 results in similar developmental defects in lymphatic sprouting, capillary network, parachordal lymphangioblast (PL), and thoracic duct (TD) similar to down-regulation of VEGF-C. Altogether, our data reveals a critical role of CD146 to mediate VEGF-C signaling pathway in lymphangiogenesis.

We present the complete mitochondrial genome of Pomacea maculate in this study. The mitochondrial genome is 15,512 bp in length, containing 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes. Overall nucleotide compositions of the light strand are 41.13% of A, 30.81% of T, 15.25% of C and 12.81% of G. Its gene arrangement and distribution are different from the typical vertebrates. The absence of D-loop is consistent with the Gastropoda, but at least one lengthy non-coding region is essential regulatory element for the initiation of transcription and replication. Phylogenetic tree is constructed by the maximum-likelihood method based on the complete mitochondrial genomes of 15 species of Caenogastropoda, using Helix aspersa as outgroup to assess their actual phylogenetic relationship and evolution. The result provides fundamental data for resolving phylogenetic and genetic problems related to effective management strategies.

Melatonin has been reported to play roles in regulating carbohydrate levels and plant growth. However, little is known about the exact mechanism by which melatonin regulates sugar levels and growth in plants. In this study, it was found that high levels of melatonin inhibited the growth of wild-type (WT) apple plants and induced significant accumulations of fructose, glucose, and sucrose in apple leaves, while MdFRK2 expression was significantly downregulated. MdFRK2 promoter transiently expressed in tobacco leaves further supported that the expression of MdFRK2 could be inhibited by exogenous melatonin. After applying exogenous melatonin, the suppression of MdFRK2 expression was significantly rescued in transgenic apples overexpressing MdFRK2 via the 35S promoter. Fructose, glucose, and sucrose concentrations increased less as compared to WT apple plants. Wild-type plants showed a stunted phenotype 21 days after melatonin treatment, while MdFRK2-overexpressing plants exhibited slightly inhibited growth, indicating that the downregulated MdFRK2 expression in response to melatonin was involved in melatonin-mediated growth inhibition. Taken together, these results demonstrate the involvement of MdFRK2 in melatonin-induced sugar accumulation and growth inhibition. Our findings shed light on the roles played by MdFRK2 in connecting melatonin action and plant growth.

We present the complete mitochondrial genome of Pomacea diffusa in this study. The results show that the mitochondrial genome is 16,640 bp in length, which is comprised of 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNA genes, and 21 tRNA genes. The nucleotide compositions of the light strand are 39.62% of A, 30.13% of T, 16.02% of C, and 14.24% of G. Except eight tRNA (Glu, Gly, Trp, Cys, Tyr, Met, Thr, Val) on the light strand, the rest are encoded on the heavy strand. All the protein-coding genes start with ATC initiation codon, and two types of inferred termination codons are TAA and TAG. There are 26 intergenic spacers and two gene overlaps. The phylogenetic analysis shows that P. diffusa clusters with P. canaliculata and P. maculata with high bootstrap support, which is consistent with the morphological and molecular evidence.

Recently, image attributes containing high-level semantic information have been widely used in computer vision tasks, including visual recognition and image captioning. Existing attribute extraction methods map visual concepts to the probabilities of frequently-used words by directly using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Typically, two main problems exist in those methods. First, words of different parts of speech (POSs) are handled in the same way, but non-nominal words can hardly be mapped to visual regions through CNNs only. Second, synonymous nominal words are treated as independent and different words, in which similarities are ignored. In this paper, a novel Refined Universal Detection (RUDet) method is proposed to solve these two problems. Specifically, a Refinement (RF) module is designed to extract refined attributes of non-nominal words based on the attributes of nominal words and visual features. In addition, a Word Tree (WT) module is constructed to integrate synonymous nouns, which ensures that similar words hold similar and more accurate probabilities. Moreover, a Feature Enhancement (FE) module is adopted to enhance the ability to mine different visual concepts in different scales. Experiments conducted on the large-scale Microsoft (MS) COCO dataset illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.
