Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore the thermal properties of epoxy–acrylate blends for the liquid crystal display (LCD) 3D printing technique. Starting from an epoxy–acrylate blend with a ratio of epoxy to acrylate of 50:50, the effect of adding a reactive monofunctional epoxy diluent was evaluated. The diluent was a resin composed by oxirane, mono[(C12-14 alkyl) methyl] derivatives selected for its low viscosity (i.e., 1.8 Poise) at room temperature and its reactivity. The diluent content varied from 15 to 25 wt% and, for all the formulation, double curing cycles, where thermal curing followed photocuring, were studied. The effect of different curing temperatures was also evaluated. The control of the diluent content and of the curing temperature allowed tailoring of the thermomechanical resin properties while improving the resin's processability. The glass transition ranged from 115.4 °C to 90.8 °C depending on the combination of diluent content and post-curing temperature. The resin developed displayed a faster processing time tested on a reference part with printing time of 4 h and 20 min that was much lower than the printing times (7 and 16 h) observed for the starting formulations. 32. 3D-Printed Micro-Optofluidic Slug Flow Detector

Abstract

Non-Newtonian fluids analysis in microdevices is challenging both in biological and chemical applications. In this context, the flow velocity evaluation is crucial. This work presents a portable and disposable micro-optofluidic detector ( $\mu $ OFD), in which microoptical and microfluidic components are integrated and used for the real-time characterization of a sequenced flow generated by two immiscible fluids, called slug flow. The 3D-printed approach was chosen for the device fabrication, being simple, flexible, fast, and low-cost, and for the possibility of exploring wider channel geometries as compared to soft lithography. In the micro optofluidic detector, the light interacts with the flow in two observation points, 1 mm apart from each other, placed along the microchannel at 26 mm far from the T-junction. The optical signal variations, correlated with the fluids’ optical properties, were used for real-time tracking of slug frequency passage, velocity, and length by an ad hoc signal processing procedure. Two $\mu $ OFD prototypes were presented. One prototype was entirely made in poly-dimethyl-siloxane (PDMS), while in the second, the microoptical component was made of VeroClear and the microfluidic part in PDMS. Both prototypes were successfully characterized in different hydrodynamic conditions as proof of concept of their validity as flow velocity detectors. The advantage of realizing, by using a low-cost and easy-to-use fabrication process, a micro-optofluidic device that embeds the optical monitoring elements and the microchannels, without constraints on the localization of the observation point and microchannel height, opens the way to the design of a great variety of lab-on-a-chip (LOC) microdevices for complex fluids investigation.

33. Controlling Process Variables in 3D Printing to Limit the Energy Consumption.

Abstract

This study looked at effective energy usage and renewable resources to make 3D printing more environmentally friendly. The use of bio-based materials and the investigation of technological aspects that maximized the mechanical properties of 3D-printed products and assured energy cost savings were the adopted strategies. Two bio-based thermoplastics made from pure and filled polylactide acid (PLA) with wood were examined. These filaments were printed by changing the extruder temperature (from 190 to 220°C, respectively) and the printing speed (from-30% to +30% of default value) to verify the actual process conditions that allow the material to be extruded for a given printer apparatus. A dynamic mechanical analysis was performed on developed specimens. The energy consumption, to heat and melt the thermoplastics, for every combination of processing variables, was calculated. Results allowed to attest that storage modulus of printed parts and the amount of energy spent during printing were more affected by printing speed than by extruder temperatures. Particularly in the case of PLA+WOOD, by doubling the printing speed, the productivity increased by 37% despite a 30% rise in energy usage. The mechanical properties and printing accuracy did not appear to be severely impacted by an increase in printing speed from 70 to 130 mm/s at least for simple geometries and small sample sizes.
