7. Determination of hydrogenated natural rubber (HNR) bearing pad vulcanizate performance based on thermal oxidative resistance characteristic.

Abstract

Isolation systems to protect a bridge structure often use steel-laminated elastomeric bridge bearing pad based on natural or chloroprene rubber. Supply of imported chloroprene rubber becomes the main constrain to produce high-quality elastomeric bridge bearing pad especially which has superior thermal-oxidative resistance. The research was aimed to study the possibility of hydrogenated natural rubber (HNR) as an alternative base elastomer to substitute mainly synthetic chloroprene rubber in the production of elastomeric bridge bearing pad. HNR was compounded at various capacities (300, 900, and 2700 g) to investigate the quality consistency. The procedure of HNR compounding referred to ASTM D 3182. HNR vulcanizate was characterized mainly in accordance with elastomeric bridge bearing pad standard requirement as stated in SNI 3967:2013 Duro 60. The result showed that all of the bearing pad vulcanizate were produced at any capacity had hardness value that filled the SNI 3967:2013 requirement since the difference of hardness value due to aging condition as max 5 point. While the ozone resistant parameter was only proper to natural rubber bearing pad specification. The low tensile properties and compression set values were caused by the short HNR molecular chain and less flexibility of the crosslink networks. Both factors inhibited strain-induced crystallization of the HNR molecular chain during stretching. HNR vulcanizates showed good performance on UV weathering resistance. Referred to the results, it could be concluded that HNR was potential to be developed as alternating base elastomer on elastomeric bridge bearing pad production although it remains necessary to conduct compound reformulation procedure at a higher capacity of production. Abstract

It is well-recognized that the sulfur to accelerator (S/A) ratio greatly influences the nature of rubber vulcanizates. Viscoelasticity, vibration damping, and thermal stability are important properties of rubber vulcanizates used in vibration isolators. This study aimed to assess the effects of sulfur to 2-2'-dithiobenzothiazole (MBTS) accelerator ratio on viscoelastic, vibration damping, and thermal stability of gum natural rubber (NR) vulcanizates. The viscoelastic and vibration damping properties were determined by using a rubber process analyzer (RPA), while the thermal stability was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that the gum NR vulcanizates prepared with a sulphur to MBTS accelerator ratio at 1.11 had the best viscoelastic and vibration damping properties for use as a rubber isolator. However, regarding thermal stability, the gum NR vulcanizates prepared with sulfur to MBTS accelerator ratio at 2.15 were superior to the others. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Graft copolymerization of an acrylonitrile monomer onto Deproteinized Natural Rubber (DPNR) is an important process in the modification of Natural Rubber (NR) to increase its oil resistance. However, coagulation at the beginning of the process was a problem causing a copolymerization foil to occur. The presence of a styrene monomer is therefore expected to improve the emulsion condition so that coagulation can be prevented in the early reaction step. For comparison purposes, the processes with and without styrene were investigated. The influence of the concentration of styrene as well as the ratio of the DPNR:monomer on the stabilization process were also observed. The results showed that the addition of styrene could improve the stabilization process as proven by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The presence of the functional group of C≡N at FTIR proved the production of the polyacrylonitrile in the mixture. The investigation showed that the concentration of styrene monomer, which led to the emulsion stability, is up to 1.5 wt% concentration of styrene at the ratio of DPNR:monomer (M) of 70:30 wt%.
