Abstract

Magnetic skyrmions are emerging as key elements of unconventional operations having unique properties such as small size and low current manipulation. In particular, it is possible to design skyrmion-based neurons and synapses for neuromorphic computing in devices where skyrmions move along the current direction (zero skyrmion Hall angle). Here, we show that, for a given graph, skyrmions can be used in optimization problems facing the calculation of the shortest path. Our tests show a solution with the same path length as computed with Algorithm. In addition, we also discuss how skyrmions act as positive feedback on this type of problem giving rise to a self-reinforcement of the path which is a possible solution.

Abstract

Identification of dynamics underlying biochemical pathways of interest in oncology is a primary goal in current systems biology. Understanding structures and interactions that govern the evolution of such systems is believed to be a cornerstone in this research. Systems theory and systems identification theory are primary resources for this task since they both provide a self consistent framework for modelling and manipulating models of dynamical systems that are best suited for the problem under investigation. We address herein the issue of obtaining an informative dataset ZN to be used as starting point for identification of EGFR pathway dynamics. In order to match experimental identifiability criteria we propose a theoretical framework for input stimulus design based on dynamical properties of the system under investigation. A feasible optofluidic design has been designed on the basis of the spectral properties of the driving inputs that maximize information content after the theoretical studies.

23. High-Resolved Near-Field Sensing by Means of Dielectric Grating With a Box-Like Resonance Shape

Abstract

In the last ten years, advances in diagnosis and treatment have played a significant role in counteracting the growth of dangerous diseases. Recently, several studies have demonstrated that monitoring proteins in the human body helps predictive monitoring of human health conditions and disease progress. In this context, bio-recognition techniques with high resolution are crucial. Evanescent-field biosensors have been widely investigated and successfully developed thanks to their ultrahigh sensitivity. However, their resolution is mitigated by the nature of the Lorentzian spectral line shape that shows inevitable significant spectral overlap among similar concentration-related resonances. To overcome this problem, a novel ultra-compact photonic biosensor with a tailored resonance shape is proposed. The device consists of 1-D photonic crystal (PhC) with engineered defects to achieve resonance with a box-like shape, a very large roll-off (=−10.50 dB/oct.), within a small footprint ( $\approx {1}\cdot {10}^{-{2}}\,\,\mu \text{m}^{{2}}$ ), enabling single wavelength interrogation. The strong biosensor–analyte interaction is associated with a larger transmission change with respect to biosensors with Lorentzian shape (> 4 versus > 0.5 dB for proteins Immunoglobulin-G (IgG) concentration from 1 to 500 pg/mL), drastically decreasing the read errors.

25. Modeling Highly Efficient Homojunction Perovskite Solar Cells With Graphene-TiO2 Nanocomposite as the Electron Transport Layer

Abstract

Perovskite-based solar cells have observed tremendous growth in the last decade aiming at developing renewable energy sources. The enhancement of the power conversion efficiency (PCE), sustainability, and easing of the fabrication are the main driving forces of the ongoing research activity. In this context, graphene is particularly promising since it not only provides better charge collection but also helps to improve the sustainability and low-temperature fabrication of the perovskite cell. Here, a homojunction MaPbI3 perovskite solar cell with graphene-TiO2 nano-composite as the electron transport layer (ETL) has been numerically investigated. The effect of doping concentration on the p and n-doped section in the homojunction-MaPbI3 has been studied, showing that 1017 and 1016 cm−3 doping on the p and n section of MaPbI3, respectively, provide the best band alignment with the ETL layer. The optimum thickness ratio of two doped sections (p:n) is found to be 60:40 in %. Moreover, the presence of graphene in the TiO2 layer improves PCE thanks to enhanced fill factor and saturated current density. A combined effect of all these results in a PCE of 22.71% with a 100 nm thick ETL layer having an optimum graphene concentration of around 1%.

Abstract

Abstract Background Mechanistic models are becoming more and more popular in Systems Biology; identification and control of models underlying biochemical pathways of interest in oncology is a primary goal in this field. Unfortunately the scarce availability of data still limits our understanding of the intrinsic characteristics of complex pathologies like cancer: acquiring information for a system understanding of complex reaction networks is time consuming and expensive. Stimulus response experiments (SRE) have been used to gain a deeper insight into the details of biochemical mechanisms underlying cell life and functioning. Optimisation of the input time-profile, however, still remains a major area of research due to the complexity of the problem and its relevance for the task of information retrieval in systems biology-related experiments. Results We have addressed the problem of quantifying the information associated to an experiment using the Fisher Information Matrix and we have proposed an optimal experimental design strategy based on evolutionary algorithm to cope with the problem of information gathering in Systems Biology. On the basis of the theoretical results obtained in the field of control systems theory, we have studied the dynamical properties of the signals to be used in cell stimulation. The results of this study have been used to develop a microfluidic device for the automation of the process of cell stimulation for system identification. Conclusion We have applied the proposed approach to the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor pathway and we observed that it minimises the amount of parametric uncertainty associated to the identified model. A statistical framework based on Monte-Carlo estimations of the uncertainty ellipsoid confirmed the superiority of optimally designed experiments over canonical inputs. The proposed approach can be easily extended to multiobjective formulations that can also take advantage of identifiability analysis. Moreover, the availability of fully automated microfluidic platforms explicitly developed for the task of biochemical model identification will hopefully reduce the effects of the 'data rich-data poor' paradox in Systems Biology.
