Abstract

The effects of the induction of BaZr[O.sub.3] (BZO) on the stoichiometry and transport properties of the Y[Ba.sub.2][Cu.sub.3][O.sub.7-[delta]] (YBCO) thin films are studied. The results show that such inclusions induce a strong-pinning capability on the films on single crystal substrate.

Investigating MgB2 films made by in-situ annealing of precursor films deposited by various techniques is discussed. The results obtained for precursor films with Mg content sufficient to establish thermodynamic equilibrium between MgB2 and Mg vapor during the annealing process.

Abstract

Investigating the structural and morphological properties of Ni-11at %V and Ni-5at% W substrates, as well as their influence on the superconducting transport properties of the YBCO superconducting architectures is presented. It is concluded that the Ni-W substrate has a larger percolation are, mainly due t the absence of twinned grains, and a higher oxidation resistance.

Abstract

Biaxially aligned CeO2 buffer layers were deposited on the both non-magnetic Ni-V and Pd-buffered Ni substrates through pulsed labor ablations. It was observed that the resulting films demonstrate strong in-plane and out-plane operations. In addition, SEM studies showed that the CeO2 films on Ni and Ni-based alloy substrates have smooth and continuous surfaces. Furthermore, it was noted that Ni-V can be used as an alternative substrate for the fabrication of textured YBCO conductors.

Abstract

An off axis deposition geometry is proposed for the enhancement of pulsed laser deposited YBCO thin films' surface quality. Resulting films exhibited excellent superconducting and structural properties as well as a surface morphology free from particulates such as droplets. A 0.12-degree full-width half maximum ofthe rocking curve of (005) YBCO peak was also observed. The effects of deposition parameters on film quality were also analyzed.

Abstract

YBa2Cu3O7–x (YBCO) films grown by metal-organic decomposition (MOD) are promising candidates for the production of high performance high temperature superconductors (HTS) tapes. Moreover, artificial pinning centers (APCs) introduction proved to be a powerful tool for the improvement of transport properties in YBCO films. Along with the widely employed pinning strategies, such as the introduction of secondary phases in the YBCO matrix, a less studied approach is the nanostructuring of the YBCO substrate, in order to hinder its growth and to obtain a highly defective superconductive layer. In this work, oxide nanostructures were deposited on crystalline substrates via polymer assisted deposition (PAD), a low cost, highly versatile technique, so as to create nanoparticles that could interfere with epitaxial growth of chemical YBCO films. Preliminary analyses of the superconducting films grown on BaZrO3 (BZO) and ZrO2 (ZO) nanostructures showed that the decorated templates are highly effective in straining the YBCO matrix, leading to a significant improvement in transport properties. In fact, we obtain an increase of the critical current density, at 77 K, for YBCO grown on BZO and ZO decorated substrate of the order of 3 times at 2 T and even of the order of 8 times at 5 T with respect to the YBCO grown on bare substrate. The improvement of the pinning properties can be related to the intrinsic modification of the crystal structure of YBCO film due to the presence of these nanoparticles, in agreement with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis performed. Abstract

The introduction of artificial pinning sites in YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) epitaxial thin films has been obtained by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique from YBCO-BaZrO3 (BZO) composite targets with BZO concentration ranging from 2.5 to 7 mol %. The typical critical temperature, Tc, drop observed in YBCO-secondary phase films grown by PLD has been successfully recovered by increasing the deposition temperature. Transport properties analyses revealed improved pinning force values for YBCO-BZO films for BZO concentration above 5 mol %. These films exhibited an anomalous dual peak structure which has been ascribed to the presence of two pinning contributions. The crossover field, Bm, separating these two pinning regimes has been observed to be temperature independent suggesting the occurrence of the matching field effect. The measured value of Bm agreed with the matching field value, B[uppercase_phi_synonym]=Knd[uppercase_phi_synonym]0, as evaluated from transmission electron microscopy investigations. The mark of this phenomenon is retained down to 10 K, making YBCO-BZO more performing than pristine YBCO films at applied magnetic fields below Bm in all the temperature range inspected. On the contrary, in the high magnetic field range (above Bm), the effectiveness of correlated pinning is progressively reduced on lowering the temperature suggesting that at low temperatures the dominant pinning contribution arises from isotropic pinning centers. The application of the pulsed laser deposition technique for the generation of artificial pinning sites in the different Y[Ba.sub.2][Cu.sub.3][O.sub.7-[delta]] films with BaZr[O.sub.3] inclusions is demonstrated. The films with BZO concentration above 5 mol% are shown to exhibit enhanced pinning force values.
