Background/Objectives: Mitochondrial transfer RNA mutations are one of the most important causes of hereditary hearing loss in humans. In most cases, its presentation is bilateral and symmetrical; however, there are numerous cases of single-sided presentation or asymmetrical onset described in the literature that may represent a diagnostic challenge. The aim of this review is to present the evidence of auditory asymmetry in mitochondrial diseases, highlighting the possible presence of cases with atypical presentation. Methods: A review of the English literature to date on hearing loss and mitochondrial diseases was performed using PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases. The literature review was performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines for scoping review. Results: A total of 10 full-text articles were included in this review, comprising 25 patients with single-sided or asymmetrical hearing loss associated with mitochondrial disease. Conclusions: Sensorineural hearing loss due to mitochondrial disease can represent a complex diagnostic challenge in cases of asymmetric or unilateral presentation. Background/Objectives: Tracheoesophageal voice is the most commonly used voice rehabilitation technique after a total laryngectomy. The placement of the tracheoesophageal prosthesis can be performed at the same time as the total laryngectomy (primary placement) or in a second procedure after surgery (secondary placement). The purpose of this study is to analyze the substitution voice in patients with a tracheoesophageal prosthesis, considering the influence of radiotherapy and timing of prosthesis placement (primary or secondary) on voice quality. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted of all patients who received a tracheoesophageal phonatory prosthesis after a total laryngectomy was performed. We assessed whether patients received radiotherapy and whether they had a primary or secondary tracheoesophageal prosthesis. For the voice analysis, maximum phonation time (MPT), INFVo, SECEL, AVQI, CPPS, harmonic to noise ratio (HNR), unvoiced fraction (UVF), and number of voice breaks (NVB) were evaluated. Results: A total of 15 patients (14 males and 1 female) with a mean age of 71.8 years (SD ± 7.5) were enrolled. Eight had a primary prosthesis placement and five did not receive radiotherapy. INFVo parameters I and Vo were higher in patients with a primary placement of the phonatory prosthesis (p = 0.046 and p = 0.047). Patients who received the prosthesis secondarily had a higher mean CPPS and lower mean AVQI. Conclusions: A secondary placement of the prostheses seems to result in a minimal advantage in voice quality compared to a primary placement. Takenouchi–Kosaki syndrome (TKS) is a rare congenital disease caused by a de novo mutation in the Cell Division Cycle 42 (CDC42) gene. Patients with TKS present facial and body dysmorphisms, hematologic and immune dysregulation, intellectual disability, neurodevelopmental delay and hearing loss. The aim of this study is to review the literature, focusing on hearing and language abilities in children with TKS. A systematic search on PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases was performed, including twelve studies for a total of 13 patients. Hearing loss (HL) occurs in a great percentage of patients (84.6%); nonetheless, auditory threshold, severity of HL and language abilities were reported in a few cases. In two studies, auditory rehabilitation strategies were described. Although several studies have investigated the hematological features of TKS, still only a few authors have focused on the audiological and language abilities of these children. Given the fact that HL has a significant impact on behaviors, communications skills, and quality of life, it is important to adequately assess and rehabilitate patients early with this syndrome. Despite the spread of novel-generation cochlear-implant (CI) magnetic systems, access to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for CI recipients is still limited due to safety concerns. The aim of this study is to assess and record the experiences of Hires Ultra 3D (Advanced Bionics) recipients who underwent an MRI examination. A multicentric European survey about this topic was conducted focusing on safety issues, and the results were compared with the current literature. We collected a total of 65 MRI scans performed in 9 otologic referral centers for a total of 47 Hires Ultra 3D recipients, including, for the first time, 2 children and 3 teenagers. Preventive measures were represented by scanning time and sedation for children. Head wrapping was used in eight cases, and six of the eight cases received local anesthesia, even if both measures were not needed. Only three patients complained of pain (3/65 examinations, 4.6%) due to the tight head bandage, and one of the three cases required MRI scan interruption. No other adverse events were reported. We believe that these results should encourage MRI execution in accordance with manufacturer recommendations for Ultra 3D recipients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The aim of the study is to conduct a systematic review of the existing literature on styloidectomy performed through transoral robotic surgery (TORS) in Eagle syndrome (ES). Design and Setting: Two independent reviewers (RC and AC) conducted a systematic review of PubMed and Embase databases, seeking articles on TORS performed for ES treatment. The search was conducted in July 2023. The review was carried out in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Participants: The review included a total of 17 adult patients, comprising 12 females and 5 males, with an average age of 52.2 years, all diagnosed with ES. Main Outcome Measures: For each patient, we assessed the overall length of the styloid process, the affected side, total intervention duration, hospitalization duration, pre and postoperative Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores, and the presence of minor and major complications. Results: We identified 4 articles describing 17 instances of TORS as a surgical treatment for ES in the literature, totaling 18 styloidectomies. The mean age of the patients was 52.2 years, with 12 females and 5 males. The average operation time, inclusive of the docking phase, was 68.8 minutes. Sixteen patients (94.1% of the total) experienced complete symptom disappearance or near‐complete resolution after surgery. One patient (5.9%) showed improvement categorized as 'non‐meaningful.' The article focuses on the role for parental-camera recording and telemedicine in the evaluation of vertigo in children. Topics include the need for the careful collection of medical history and description of symptoms in the diagnostic process, the value of patients' self-recorded videos for observing children's behaviors during acute vertigo attacks and how telemedicine could be useful for evaluating dizzy children. A diagnostic flow chart for the evaluation of vertigo is also presented.

The barbed repositioning pharyngoplasty surgical technique is becoming more widely used for patients with obstructive sleep apnea due to its safety, effectiveness, and rapidity, as evidenced by multicenter studies and Meta‐analyses. In order to achieve uniform surgical outcomes, avoid errors that could worsen outcomes, and enable adequate data comparison, a standardized procedure is required to overcome surgeon‐related variability. The aim of this review is to investigate the state of the art among the association between Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and laryngomalacia, analyzing the epidemiology, the diagnostic tools, and the possible treatments available to affected patients. Laryngomalacia, characterized by the malacic consistency of the epiglottis with a tendency to collapse during inspiratory acts, producing a characteristic noise known as stridor, is a common condition in infants and particularly in those affected by prematurity, genetic diseases, craniofacial anomalies, and neurological problems. Congenital laryngomalacia, presenting with stridor within the first 15 days of life, is often self-limiting and tends to resolve by 24 months. OSA is not only a consequence of laryngomalacia but also exacerbates and perpetuates the condition. Currently, the treatments reported in the literature are based (i) on medical therapies (including watchful waiting) and (ii) on surgical treatments. Introduction: The presence of cervical lymph node metastases is an unfavorable prognostic factor in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and a potential cause of treatment failure. Occult lymph node metastasis occurs in approximately 15–20% of HNSCC patients with a clinically negative neck (cN0), greatly impacting on their prognosis. The present study aimed to investigate the role of pre-treatment peripheral blood markers in predicting clinically occult cervical lymph node metastasis. Methods: This multicenter, retrospective study was performed in a cohort of 472 patients diagnosed with cN0 HNSCC who underwent up-front surgery. Baseline neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), systemic inflammatory marker (SIM), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) were calculated from available blood parameters. Results: Oro-hypopharyngeal and oral cancers, locally advanced stage, moderately (G2), and poorly (G3) differentiated grade were associated with an increased risk of pathological lymph node involvement. NLR, LMR, PLR, SIM, and SII were significantly associated at multivariable analysis. NLR >2.12 was the most reliable at predicting occult lymph node metastasis (OR = 5.22; 95% CI: 2.14–12.75). We describe a predictive score integrating cancer site, local stage, and NLR which is effective at predicting positive lymph node pathological status. Conclusions: The present study provides evidence that pre-treatment peripheral blood markers, in particular NLR, represent reliable predictors of clinically occult cervical lymph node metastasis in cN0 HNSCC. The article discusses a study which investigated the adverse effects of COVID-19 vaccines on the auditory and vestibular system. The vaccines studied are Comirnaty from Pfizer, Spikevax from Moderna and Vaxzevria from AstraZenica. Some of the reported audio-vestibular adverse effects of the vaccines include vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss and middle ear diseases.
