Phenolic compounds are one of the main parameters of wine quality and contribute to the organoleptic characteristics, particularly color, astringency and body. In the highlands of southern Brazil, low temperatures and high accumulation of global solar radiation favor the synthesis of total polyphenols in grapes. The objective of this work was to evaluate the concentration of total polyphenols of 10 white varieties and 13 red varieties produced in high altitude regions of southern Brazil. The vineyard is located in the Experimental Station of Santa Catarina State Agricultural Research and Rural Extension Agency (EPAGRI), in the city of São Joaquim (28° 16′30″S, 49° 56′09″W, Altitude 1,400 m), the evaluations occurred in 2015/2016 growing season. The content of total polyphenols was determined as proposed by Singleton & Rossi (1965), using the Folin-Ciocalteu method, with spectrophotometer readings. Polyphenol content ranged from 283.56 to 1,387.31 mg/L for white varieties, the varieties with the highest concentrations were Greco di Tufo (1,378.31 mg/L), Trebbiano Toscano (995.59 mg/L) and Ribola Gialla (737.48 mg/L). For the red varieties, the total polyphenol content ranged from 523.87 to 4,929.57 mg/L, Ancellotta (4,929.57 mg/L), Uva di Troia (2,722.27 mg/L) and Croatina (2,410 mg/L) stood out for presenting the highest levels.

This work aims to evaluate the effect of pruning in the commercial varieties of feijoa “Alcântara” and “Nonante” on the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons. The treatments were without pruning (SP) and with pruning (CP), with three replications per cultivar. The plant's traits studied were: diameter of the stem, diameter of the canopy, height of plant, leaf area index, the total number of fruits per plant and fruit set. Also were evaluated the diameter, length and total weight of the fruit, yield of pulp (%), total soluble solids, titratable acidity and pH. The pruning influenced the diameter, length and weight of the fruits in both cultivars. On average, the weight was 73.1 and 65.9 g for cv. Nonante, 83.5 and 76.9 g in cv. Alcântara, in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 harvest, respectively, which showed the importance of fruit pruning for the quality and productivity of feijoa fruits.

The pineapple-guava belongs to Myrtaceae family and it is a species of spontaneous occurrence in South of Brazil and Uruguai. Despite its adaptability and productive potential, the pineapple-guava is still not so much used for business purpose, as it happens in others countries were the species was introduced and has been widely cultivated. Four commercial cultivars were created by Epagri together with Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, aiming to promote the pineapple-guava farming in Brazil. The objective of this study is to evaluate the vegetative, phenological and productive development of the cultivars during three harvests. It was noticed that there is not a difference in the vegetative development among them, related to the trunk diameter and plant height. Related to the production degree, at least in two of the harvests evaluated, the cvs Alcantara and Helena were superior to the others and similar between them.

- Abstract
Our objective was to evaluate, under field conditions, the dynamics of decomposition of crop residues under a pear orchard in Brazil. Residues of oat, oilseed radish, ryegrass and spontaneous vegetation were placed in litter bags and deposited between pear rows. After 0, 21, 36, 56 and 136 days, dry matter, carbon, lignin, cellulose, non-structural components, and nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) were determined. Spontaneous vegetation residues had the longest half residence time compared to the introduced cover crops, while oat residues presented faster dry-matter decomposition rates (2-3 fold higher). Oilseed radish and ryegrass showed the highest final remaining dry matter (26-36%), and the largest nutrients release. Oilseed radish and ryegrass residues released 85 kg N ha-1, 67 kg P ha-1, 48 kg K ha-1, 16 kg Ca ha-1, and 9 kg Mg ha-1. Oilseed radish can potentially benefit mineral nutrition of fruit trees., Revista de Ciências Agrárias, Vol. 43 No. 1 (2020)

Feijoa ,width ,largura ,non-destructive evaluation ,avaliação não destrutiva ,forma da folha ,length ,comprimento ,leaf shape - Abstract
Feijoa [Acca sellowiana (O. Berg.) Burret] is a fruit-bearing species native to southern Brazil and northeastern Uruguay. The knowledge of total leaf area is important for evaluating plant management, studying plant physiology and estimating phytosanitary damage. The mathematical models used to estimate feijoa leaf area did not consider differences in leaf area between cultivars. The objective of this work was to evaluate, adjust, and validate mathematical models for estimating leaf area in four feijoa Brazilian cultivars. Data was collected over two harvest periods; the first to establish the mathematical models and the second to validate them. The leaves of the cultivars SCS411 – ‘Alcântara’, SCS412 – ‘Helena’, SCS414 – ‘Mattos,’ and SCS415 – ‘Nonante’ were collected from Active Germplasm Bank of Epagri, in São Joaquim, SC, Brazil. Leaf area (AF), length (C), width (L), and shape index were recorded, and the data analyzed using linear and quadratic regression models. The estimation of leaf area from the mathematical model presents high precision and simplicity of execution. The equation y=0.7345x+0.0298, where x is the product length x width of the leaf (L*C), presented the best results. A goiabeira-serrana [Acca sellowiana (O. Berg.)

BACKGROUND: The natural abundance of stable isotope 15N (δ15N) in production systems has emerged as an alternative to distinguish organic products from conventional ones. This study evaluated the use of δ15N values recorded for nitrogen fertilizers, soil and plant tissue in order to set the differences between organic and conventional agricultural production systems applied to rice, potatoes, apple and banana crops. RESULTS: Values of δ15N recorded for N sources ranged from +5.58‰ to +18.27‰ and from −3.55‰ to +3.19‰ in organic and synthetic fertilizers, respectively. Values recorded for δ15N in food from organic rice, potatoes and banana farms were higher than values recorded for δ15N in conventional farms; the same was observed for values recorded for δ15N in leaves from the four crops. CONCLUSION: Results have allowed for differentiation between production systems due to values of δ15N recorded in leaves of all crops and food, for rice, potatoes and banana trees. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry. ABSTRACT Sandy soils of the Campanha Gaúcha region have naturally low levels of available phosphorus (P), which is why special attention to pre-planting fertilization is important. However, there are no studies that enable a proper calibration method to determine P content available in soil for young grapevines. The study aimed to evaluate phosphorus fertilization for young grapevines of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in order to provide support for the recommendation of P in sandy soils. In October, 2011 we applied six doses of P (0, 10, 20, 40, 60 and 100 kg P2O5 ha-1 yr-1) in soil and transplanted cultivars of Chardonnay (experiment 1) and Pinot Noir (ex-periment 2). The design of each experiment was randomized blocks with ten plants and three replications. We evaluated P content in the soil and leaves. We determined plant height, stem diameter and dry matter of the pruned material from crop seasons 2011/12 to 2014/15. The addition of increasing P doses elevated P content available in soil three years after implementing the experiments, but exclusively in doses above 40 and 60 kg P2O5 ha-1 in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, respectively. However, P content in soil for every applied P dose remained below sufficiency level, and therefore growth parameters and leaf P content were virtually unaffected.

The low fruit set is one of the main factors leading to poor yield of pear orchards in Brazil. Ethylene is associated with abscission of flowers and fruitlets. Then, the application of ethylene synthesis inhibitors, such as AVG, is a potential tool to increase fruit set of pears. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of AVG, sprayed at different rates and timings, on fruit set, yield and fruit quality of ‘Rocha’ pear. The study was performed in a commercial orchard located in the municipality of São Joaquim, SC, during the growing seasons of 2014/2015 and 2015/2016. Plant material consisted of ‘Rocha’ pear trees grafted on quince rootstock ‘BA29’. AVG was tested at different rates (60 mg L-1 and 80 mg L-1) and timings [full bloom, one week after full bloom (WAFB), and two WAFB), either alone or in combination. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design, with at least five single-tree replications. The fruit set, number of fruit per tree, yield, estimated yield, fruit weight, return bloom, and fruit quality attributes were assessed. Fruit set and yield were consistently increased by single applications of AVG at 60 and 80 mg L-1 at both one and two weeks after full bloom, without negatively affecting fruit quality attributes and return bloom.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of orchard fertilization with increasing rates of phosphorus (P) on yield and critical levels of P in the soil and in the leaf of ‘Fuji’ apple trees. The experiment was conducted in São Joaquim, state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, from 2010 to 2015, in an Inceptisol soil. The three apple orchards were planted in 2004 with the Fuji cultivar grafted on Marubakaido/ M9 rootstock and grown under a high-plant-density system (1984 trees ha-1). Annual fertilizer levels of 0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 kg ha-1 of P2O5 (as triple superphosphate) were applied to the soil surface, without incorporation, in a randomized block design with five replicates. In the first and last years (2011 and 2015), soil samples were collected from 0-10, 10-20 and 0-20 cm layers and the available P content was analyzed. Annually, whole leaves were collected and analyzed for P content. The number and weight of fruits per tree and hfruit yield were also evaluated. Application of P increased the content of available P in the soil, but this increase was not accompanied by increased leaf P content nor by increased fruit yield. This suggests that, in soils with medium to high content of organic matter and well fertilized with P before planting, there is no response of apple trees for P reapplication in the 10 subsequent years.

BACKGROUND Feijoa [Acca sellowiana (Berg) Burret] is a Brazilian native fruit with few commercial‐level plantations and high agroindustrial potential. A genotype evaluation experiment was conducted from 1996 onward, aiming to obtain fruits based on the agronomical parameters; however, the selection based on chemical composition had not been evaluated with respect to developing a new cultivar. Accordingly, the present study aimed to discriminate seven accessions of feijoa in terms of nutritional composition, phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity using multivariate analysis (principal component analysis and multivariate contrast), targeting the potential production of a new cultivar with better nutritional value and high antioxidant capacity. RESULTS: Feijoa husk presented high content of ashes, lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity compared to feijoa pulp. However, only feijoa pulp was selected to multivariate analysis because it is the fruit edible part. Data variability was explained in 78% and the feijoa pulp accessions were discriminated into four groups related to their characteristics. The accession 5 discrimination can be explained by the high content of ashes, carbohydrates, soluble solids, phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity. Accession 6 was also discriminated by the high content of total acidity, pH and proteins, as well as a low content of soluble solids. CONCLUSION: Feijoa accessions may be indicated for increasing plant selection via hybridization with the other accessions, aiming to produce new cultivars with better nutritional composition and antioxidant capacity. For example, accession 5 is the most suited fruit for human consumption and is a potential plant with respect to becoming a new cultivar. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The quality of a wine is directly linked to the best point of the grape maturation. Harvest accomplished in premature or late time result in wines with smaller expression of their qualitative potentials. The objective of this work was to evaluate the evolution of the maturation of the fruits and the composition of the musts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varieties in five different commercial vineyards of São Joaquim’s area, during the cycles of 2010 to 2013. All technological maturation and polyphenolic indicators of the grapes presented an appropriate evolution of the parameters and they were shown appropriate for the elaboration of fine high quality wines. However, the conditions of the area allow a slow decline of the organic acid levels in the grapes and musts without, however, endanger the balance between sugar and acidity. After the crop, the musts presented attributes that prove the good qualitative potential of the varieties studied in relation to the present conditions in the area.

Content of exchangeable potassium (K) in t soil may influence on its content in grapevines leaves, grape yield, as well as, in must composition. The study aimed to assess the interference of exchangeable K content in the soil on its leaf content, production and must composition of 'Cabernet Sauvignon' cultivar. In September 2011, in Santana do Livramento (RS) five vineyards with increasing levels of exchangeable K in the soil were selected. In the 2012/13 and 2013/14 harvests, the grape yield, yield components, total K content in the leaves in full bloom and berries veraison were evaluated. Values of total soluble sugar (TSS), pH, total titratable acidity (TTA), total polyphenols and anthocyanins were evaluated in the must. Exchangeable K content increase in soil with sandy surface texture increased its content in leaves collected during full flowering and in berries and must pH; however, it did not affect production of the 'Cabernet Sauvignon'. 'Cabernet Sauvignon'.

The application of potassium (K) and lime as a source of Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg) in soil may affect the growth and nutritional status of young plants of grapevines as well as grape production, must composition and distribution of forms of K in the soil. This study aimed to i) evaluate the growth and nutritional status of young grapevines submitted to the application of K lime in soil ii) evaluate how potassium fertilization affects the grape production, must composition and alterations of forms of K in soil, and iii) evaluate the potential of water in leaves as well as the nutritional status and must composition of grapevines grown with or without irrigation. Four studies were carried out. In study I, two experiments were performed in Campanha Gaucha (RS) in order to assess young plants. In the experiment 1, 0, 30 and 60 kg K2O ha-1were applied. In the experiment 2, 0, 60, 120, and 180 kg K2O ha-1were applied with application of dolomitic and calcitic lime. The K content in leaves, plant height, stem diameter and pruned material weight were evaluated. Studies II, III and IV were carried out for plants in production with the installation of three other experiments. One of the experiments was performed in Serra Catarinense (SC) with 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg K2O ha-1 yr-1. The second experiment was in Campanha Gaucha with five levels of K in the soil. The K content in leaf, berries, grape yield components, and must composition were evaluated in both experiments. The third experiment was carried out in the region of Trento (Italy) with grapevines in production, with or without irrigation the soil, where the water potential of plants as well as the nutrient content in the leaf and berry of grapes were evaluated. In the experiment with young plants, soil potassium fertilization increased the K only in the 0-10 cm layer and influenced the content of K in the leaves in the first season; however, it did not influence the growth of cv. Chardonnay or Pinot Noir. For plants in production in Serra Catarinense there was an increase in the levels of exchangeable, non-exchangeable and total K in soil with the application of potassium fertilizer. The application of K in the soil increased the concentration of K in leaf and petioles of grapevines; however, it did not affect grape production or the must composition. In Campanha Gaucha, the increase of the content of exchangeable K in the soil increased the total K in the leaves in flowering, the K content in the berries and the pH of the must; however, it did not affect grape production. Although providing less negative water potential in grapevine leaves, irrigation did not affect nutritional status or the enological parameters of the berry, showing little interference in its nutrient content.

Soil management affects the organic matter stocks, and thus the CEC especially in low activity clay soils. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the long-term (21 years) effect of the no-tillage on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and its relationship with CEC increase in a clayey Oxisol (Hapludox), in Guarapuava (PR), Southern Brazil. No-tillage soil had only 2.63t ha-1 more SOC than conventionally tilled soil at 0-20cm, and the highest net accumulation occurred in soil surface layers (0-6cm). The low accumulation rate of SOC in the no-tilled soil (0,12t ha-1 yr-1) was related to the high physical stability of soil organic matter in this clayey Oxisol. Despite the small effect on SOC contents, the no-tilllage had an expressive influence on the CEC of 0-8cm soil layer. The effective CEC increased 15.2mmol c kg-1 and the potential (pH 7.0) CEC increased 20.7mmol c kg-1 in this soil layer, in comparison to conventional tillage system. The results support the positive effect of no-tillage on soil organic matter stocks and on CEC of tropical and subtropical soils with predominantly low activity clay minerals.
