Abstract

The effects of a Nutritional Packet offered to beef steers during the final 64 d of the feedlot-finishing phase on growth performance, carcass characteristics, nutrient digestibility, and feeding behavior were evaluated. Angus-crossbred steers (N = 120; initial body weight = 544 ± 52 kg) were assigned to 30 pens (4 steers per pen; 15 pens per treatment) in a randomized complete block design where pen was the experimental unit. A steam-flaked corn-based finishing diet was offered to ad libitum, and the treatments were as follows: 1) control and 2) 30 g per steer-daily (dry matter basis) of the Nutritional Packet. The Nutritional Packet was formulated to provide 1.7 × 1010 CFU per steer-daily of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, 162 mg per steer-daily of vitamin C; 400 mg per steer-daily of vitamin B1; 2.4 g per steer-daily of NaCl, and 2.4 g per steer-daily of KCl. Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS with the fixed effect of treatment and the random effect of block. The average daily gain (P = 0.89), dry matter intake (P = 0.57), and gain efficiency (P = 0.82) were not affected by the inclusion of the Nutritional Packet. Digestibility of dry and organic matter, and neutral and acid detergent fiber increased (P ≤ 0.02) for steers offered the Nutritional Packet, while a trend for the same response was observed for hemicellulose (P = 0.08). The 12th rib backfat thickness increased (P = 0.02) for carcasses of steers offered the Nutritional Packet, followed by a greater (P = 0.03) calculated yield grade, whereas other carcass traits were not affected (P ≥ 0.32). While the steers under the control diet decreased behavior activities on day 63, a consistent pattern of feeding behavior measurements (activity min/d and min/kg of dry and organic matter, fiber fractions, and digestible nutrients) were observed for steers consuming the Nutritional Packet during both feeding behavior assessment periods (treatment × period interactions, P ≤ 0.03). Overall time (min/d) spent on rumination, drinking, active, chewing, and resting were not affected (P ≥ 0.28) by treatments. The Nutritional Packet offered to steers during the final 64 d on feed induced an improvement in apparent digestibility of nutrients and carcass fat deposition, without affecting growth performance or other carcass quality indices. Such effects associated with the more consistent feeding behavior of steers receiving the Nutritional Packet may warrant a shorter time on feed during the final portion of the finishing phase. Abstract

Brassica carinata is a new oilseed crop in Florida with the potential of producing high-quality jet biofuel. A high-protein meal (~40% crude protein; CP) is obtained as a byproduct of oil extraction; however, limited research is available on the utilization of this meal as a protein supplement for beef cattle. A generalized randomized block design was used to evaluate the effects of supplementation with B. carinata meal pellets on performance and attainment of puberty in growing beef heifers consuming bermudagrass hay (Cynodon dactylon) ad libitum. Sixty-four Angus crossbred heifers (240 ± 39 kg initial body weight; BW) were stratified and blocked (2 blocks: light and heavy) by initial BW and randomly allocated into 18 pens over 2 consecutive years (10 in year 1 and 8 in year 2). Within block, pens were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: 0 (CTL) or 0.3% of BW/d (as fed) of B. carinata meal pellets (BCM). Blood samples and BW were collected weekly for 70 d, before daily supplementation. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED of SAS with repeated measures. Model included the fixed effects of treatment, day, treatment × day interactions, block, and block × treatment interactions, with the random effect of year. Plasma was analyzed for concentrations of progesterone, triiodothyronine (T(3)), thyroxine (T(4)), ceruloplasmin (Cp), and haptoglobin (Hp). An effect of treatment was observed (P ˂ 0.01) for ADG between CTL (0.14 kg) and BCM (0.42 kg). There was no treatment or block (P > 0.05) effect for concentrations of T(3), T(4), or Hp; however, there was an effect of day (P < 0.01) for T(3), T(4), and Cp. An effect of treatment (P ˂ 0.01) was observed for Cp, with CTL having greater concentrations compared with BCM. Time to attainment of puberty did not differ (P = 0.93) between treatments. Feeding B. carinata meal as a protein supplement at 0.3% of BW/d is a viable option for increasing ADG of growing beef heifers, without affecting attainment of puberty, thyroid hormone status, or eliciting an acute phase response.

Abstract

Brassica carinata is a new oilseed crop with the potential of producing high-quality jet biofuel. A high-protein meal (~40% crude protein) is obtained as a byproduct of hexane-solvent oil extraction; however, limited research is available on the use of this meal as a protein supplement for beef cattle. A duplicated 4 × 4 Latin square design was used to determine the effects of supplementation with B. carinata meal on ruminal fermentation, digestibility, and blood metabolites in beef cattle consuming bahiagrass hay (Paspalum notatum Flüggé), compared with frequently used protein supplements. Eight Angus crossbred steers (473 ± 119 kg initial BW) were randomly allocated to 8 pens, over 4 periods of 28-d each. Within period, steers were assigned to 1 of 4 treatments: 1) 1.62 kg/d cottonseed meal (CSM); 2) 2.15 kg/d dry distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS); 3) 1.39 kg/d B. carinata meal pellets (BCM); or 4) 1.17 kg/d soybean meal (SBM), supplemented daily, on an isonitrogenous basis. Steers had ad libitum access to bahiagrass hay and water. Intake was measured using the GrowSafe system. Following a 14-d adaptation, feed and fecal samples were collected to determine apparent total tract nutrient digestibility using indigestible NDF as an internal marker. Blood and ruminal fluid samples were collected before providing the protein supplements and then every 3 h, during a 24-h period, to analyze urea nitrogen (PUN) and glucose in plasma, as well as ruminal pH, ammonia nitrogen (NH(3)-N), and VFA concentrations. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED of SAS with repeated measures. Model included the fixed effects of treatment, time, treatment × time, square, and period, and the random effects of steer(square) and steer(treatment). No effect of treatment (P > 0.05) was observed for pH, NH(3)-N, or glucose concentration. An effect of treatment (P < 0.01) was observed for PUN, with steers receiving SBM having greater concentrations. A treatment × time interaction was observed (P < 0.05) for total VFA concentration, acetate to propionate ratio, and molar proportions of acetate, propionate, butyrate, and valerate. Steers consuming SBM had greater molar proportions of branched-chain VFA (P < 0.01) compared with CSM and DDGS. There was no effect of treatment (P > 0.05) on intake or apparent total tract digestibility of nutrients. Brassica carinata performed similarly to commonly used protein supplements indicating its viability as a protein supplement for beef cattle.

Abstract

In Phase 1 (days 0 to 56) of a two-phase experiment, 81 steers (initial BW = 189 ± 22 kg) were arranged in a generalized randomized block design, allocated to nine pens (nine steers per pen) and assigned to one of three dietary treatments. Treatments consisted of different inclusion rates of Fermenten (FER) in a backgrounding diet fed ad libitum, and were as follows: 0% (CON), 2%, or s FER in the diet DM. Steer was considered the experimental unit, and individual DMI was measured using the GrowSafe system. In Phase 2 (days 57 to 112), treatments were discontinued and steers were relocated to a paddock with free access to a common basal diet, to assess potential residual effects of FER. Effect of treatment was measured on performance, concentration of serum urea nitrogen (SUN), NEFA and glucose, and apparent total tract digestibility of nutrients. On day 56, steers fed 4% FER had lesser (P = 0.01) BW than 2% FER steers. Steers fed CON also tended (P = 0.08) to have greater BW than 4% FER steers. ADG was not different (P = 0.96) between CON and 2% FER steers, whereas steers in the 4% FER treatment had lesser (P ≤ 0.01) ADG than CON and 2% FER. Steers in the 4% FER treatment had lesser (P = 0.04) DMI than CON, and were less feed efficient (P ≤ 0.04) than 2% FER and CON steers. However, DMI as a percentage of the BW did not differ (P = 0.07) across treatments. A treatment effect was observed for final BW on day 112 (P = 0.05), where 4% FER tended (P = 0.07) to have lesser BW than CON. In Phase 2, ADG was not different (P = 0.18) among treatments. However, overall ADG (days 0 to 112) was lesser (P = 0.02) for steers fed 4% FER when compared with CON. There was no difference (P ≥ 0.12) in longissimus muscle area gain or 12th rib fat depth gain. There was a treatment × day interaction for serum concentrations of glucose (P < 0.001), NEFA (P < 0.001), and SUN (P < 0.001). Steers fed 4% FER had greater (P < 0.001) DM, OM, NDF, ADF, and CP apparent total tract digestibility than CON. Similarly, 4% FER steers had greater (P ≤ 0.02) DM, OM, NDF, and ADF digestibility than 2% FER. Results show that although inclusion of FER increased apparent total tract digestibility of nutrients, DMI and overall performance of growing beef cattle were negatively affected, mainly when FER was included at 4% of the diet DM.

Abstract

University Extension programs traditionally disseminate agricultural information via in-person meetings and hardcopy publications even though universities have progressively transitioned towards delivering educational materials online over the past few decades. Given the demographic characteristics of beef cattle producers, who are predominantly older and tend to adhere to traditional practices, it is crucial to understand how the implementation of different content delivery strategies impact their engagement with online educational material. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of implementing an electronic newsletter on stakeholder engagement with beef educational online publications. Engagement with online material provided on the University of Georgia (UGA) beef extension website (ugabeef.com) was evaluated 12 months before and 12 months after the UGA Beef Tips n' Advice newsletter was launched using Siteimprove monthly reports. The newsletter was delivered monthly to an email list of beef cattle producers and industry professionals that previously attended in-person Extension programs provided by the UGA. Content of the newsletter included articles written by beef Extension Specialists, resources on current market updates and industry performance trends, and resources for upcoming Extension programs. Response variables included overall number of website visits, number of unique visitors, and overall number of pages within the website that were visualized. Each month was considered an experimental unit (n = 24) and data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS with the fixed effect of the email newsletter status (before versus after newsletter launch). The overall number of monthly visits to the website increased by 259% after the newsletter was launched (before: 99.17 ± 13.39 and after: 307.69 ± 12.87; P < 0.01). Moreover, the monthly number of unique visitors increased by 210% (before: 99.17 ± 13.39 and after: 307.69 ± 12.87; P < 0.01). Similar results were observed for the overall number of pages visualized, where the 12 months before launching the website had fewer page visits in the 12 months before the newsletter was launched compared with the 12 months after launching the newsletter (before: 170.92 ± 36.86 and after: 613.62 ± 35.42; P < 0.01). Abstract

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing soybean hulls with molasses in the receiving diets of weaned feedlot steer-calves on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, enteric methane emissions, and blood inflammatory marker. Eighteen growing Angus crossbred steers (293 ± 11 kg body weight) were used in a completely randomized design with two diets, which were considered treatments. Diets consisted of (DM basis): 1) 46% corn silage, 25% dried distillers grains with solubles, 27% molasses, 0.5% limestone, and 1.5% vitamins and mineral packet (MOL), and 2) 46% corn silage, 22% dried distillers grains with solubles, 30% soybean hulls, 0.5% limestone and 1.5% vitamins and mineral packet (SBH). The experiment consisted of a 42-d period. On d -2 and -1, steers were weighed, and the average was considered initial body weight. On day -1, after weighing, steers were transported via truck and trailer for 12 h (6 h in one direction then 6 h back to the facility) to induce stress experienced by calves when shipped to another location as is standard in the beef industry. Steers were provided hay the evening they returned to the facilities. Steers were stratified by initial body weight and randomly assigned to individual pens, which were randomly assigned to one of the two treatments (MOL or SBH; n = 9 steers/treatment). Dietary treatments started on d 0. Other body weight measurements were recorded on d 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 41 and 42. Final body weight was considered the average of two consecutive weights recorded on d 41 and 42. Blood samples were collected via venipuncture on days corresponding to body weight measurements. Feed intake data was collected daily by measuring dry matter of feed offered and orts refused. From d 14 to 20, breath samples were collected, using the sulfur hexaflouride technique, to determine enteric methane production, and feces were collected to determine apparent total tract nutrient digestibility. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS and steer as the experimental unit. The model included the fixed effect of treatment. Initial (P = 0.82) and final body weight (P = 0.64) were not affected by treatment. Additionally, no effects of treatment were observed on dry matter intake (P = 0.80) or average daily gain (P = 0.48). Data on enteric methane emissions, nutrient digestibility, and plasma LPS binding protein are still being analyzed. 43. Methane emissions and δ13C composition from beef steers consuming increasing proportions of sericea lespedeza hay on bermudagrass hay diets.

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of different proportions of ‘Au Grazer’ sericea lespedeza [SL, Lespedeza cuneata (Dum. Cours.) G. Don], a legume rich in condensed tannins (CT), on nutrient intake and digestibility, and to estimate methane (CH4) emissions and 13C isotopic composition (δ13CCH4) from beef steers consuming a forage-based diet. Twenty-five Angus-crossbred steers were distributed in a randomized complete block design (344 ± 48 kg initial BW), and randomly assigned to one of five treatments: 0SL, 25SL, 50SL, 75SL, and 100SL, diets containing 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of SL hay, respectively, mixed with ‘Tifton-85’ bermudagrass hay (Cynodon spp.). The study was carried out for two experimental periods of 21-d each. The statistical model included the fixed effect of treatment and random effects of block, experimental period, and their interaction. Apparent total tract digestibility of crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber was linearly decreased (P < 0.001) by the inclusion of SL. No effects were observed for total CH4 emissions per day, nor for CH4 relative to organic matter intake or digestible organic matter with the inclusion of SL. However, emission of CH4 in relation to intake of CT was affected by treatment (P < 0.001). A linear (P < 0.001) decrease and a quadratic effect (P < 0.001) were observed for δ13C of diets and gas, respectively, in which diets and enteric CH4 with greater inclusion of SL were more depleted in 13C. Moreover, the difference in δ13C between diets and gas (Δδ13C) had a linear decrease (P = 0.001) with the inclusion of SL. The model developed to predict the C3 proportions in the enteric CH4 fitted to predicted values (P < 0.0001). Therefore, greater proportions of SL resulted in lesser CH4 emission when CT intake was considered and the isotopic composition from enteric CH4 was able to predict the contribution of SL in the emissions. Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of early progesterone removal on pregnancy rates to fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) in presynchronized beef cows. Postpartum beef cows (n = 922; body condition score = 4.9 ± 0.77; days postpartum = 77.3 ± 20.77 d) from 7 locations were enrolled in a completely randomized design. Within location, cows were stratified by parity and days postpartum before being randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: 1) 7&7 Synch: Cows received a controlled internal drug release insert (CIDR) and a 25-mg injection of prostaglandin F2α (PG1; d 0). Cows received 100 µg of GnRH on d 7 and the CIDR was removed 7 d later, concurrently with a second prostaglandin F2α (PG2) injection (d 14). Cows received a second injection of GnRH and were FTAI 60-66 h after PG2 (d 17); 2) 7&6 Synch: Cows received the same treatment as 7&7 Synch cows; however, CIDR removal and PG2 were performed on d 13, and cows were FTAI 60-66 h after CIDR removal. Ovarian ultrasonography was performed to determine follicle diameter and CL presence at PG2 and FTAI in a subset of cows (n = 40). Estrus detection patches were utilized to evaluate estrus expression between PG2 and FTAI. Pregnancy diagnosis was performed 28-35 d after FTAI. Cows exposed to the 7&7 Synch tended to have larger follicle diameter at PG2 compared with 7&6 Synch cows (P = 0.09); however, there were no differences in follicle diameter at FTAI. Cows that expressed estrus tended to have larger follicle diameter at FTAI compared with cows that failed to express estrus (P = 0.10). Follicular growth between PG2 and FTAI, percentage of cows with a corpus luteum at PG2, and ovu-lation rate were not impacted by treatment (P ≥ 0.56). No differences were determined between treatments for estrus expression (7&7 Synch: 77.1 ± 5.91; 7&6 Synch: 74.6 ± 6.28; P = 0.50) or pregnancy rates to FTAI (7&7 Synch: 60.1 ± 4.32; 7&6 Synch: 58.2 ± 4.26; P = 0.69). In conclusion, early removal of progesterone did not impact pregnancy rates in presynchronized beef cows. Thus, the 7&6 Synch protocol described herein may be used as an alternative to the conventional 7&7 Synch protocol without compromising fertility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
