The bi-modular hip prosthesis is characterized by two tapered connections: a circular cross-section at the head-neck interface and a rectangular cross-section at the neck-stem interface. Even if the latter guarantees customization, it concerns a high rate of early failure. The connection resistance is relatable to machining (tolerances cause angular mismatch), implantation (hammering force or manual), and usage (Body Mass Index [BMI]). Due to the lack of literature about the neck-stem coupling, this work aims to investigate how the geometry of the rectangular taper connection and the external loads affect the fatigue strength of a bi-modular hip prosthesis through a 3D Finite Element Model (FEM). Nine combinations of neck-stem coupling are obtained considering the tolerances' limits on frontal and lateral angles as 4 ° + 6 ' 0 ' $$ {4}^{{}^{\circ}\begin{array}{c}+{6}^{\prime}\\ {}{0}^{\prime}\end{array}} $$ . The CoCr neck and the Ti6Al4V stem, studied in their halved, are constrained and loaded inspired by the standard ISO 7206: the stem is distally encastered simulating the embedding and tilted by 10° concerning the sagittal plane, while the force is applied vertically. First, the influence of the assembly is investigated using 0.3 kN $$ 0.3\ \mathrm{kN} $$ , 2 kN $$ 2\ \mathrm{kN} $$ , and 4 kN $$ 4\ \mathrm{kN} $$ ; then, a cyclical vertical force varying from 2.67 kN $$ 2.67\ \mathrm{kN} $$ to 5.34 kN $$ 5.34\ \mathrm{kN} $$ is imposed. Finally, one combination is analyzed in its integrity to evaluate the effect of the out-of-plane load. The study's findings concern: (i) a positive angular mismatch, which is responsible for proximal contacts, improves fatigue life, reducing Sines stress up to 33%; (ii) the higher the assembly force the higher the neck stability and the lower the extension of the overstressed lateral area; (iii) the implant fatigue resistance is directly proportional to the patient's BMI; and (iv) the out-of-plane external load causes a 40% increment in the fatigue failure risk., (© 2025 The Author(s). Xenografts are commonly used for bone regeneration in dental and orthopaedic domains to repair bone voids and other defects. The first-generation xenografts were made through sintering, which deproteinizes them and alters their crystallinity, while later xenografts are produced using cold-temperature chemical treatments to maintain the structural collagen phase. However, the impact of collagen and the crystalline phase on physicochemical properties have not been elucidated. We hypothesized that understanding these factors could explain why the latter provides improved bone regeneration clinically. In this study, we compared two types of xenografts, one prepared through a low-temperature chemical process (Treated) and another subsequently sintered at 1100°C (Sintered) using advanced microscopy, spectroscopy, X-ray analysis and compressive testing. Our investigation showed that the Treated bone graft was free of residual blood, lipids or cell debris, mitigating the risk of pathogen transmission. Meanwhile, the sintering process removed collagen and the carbonate phase of the Sintered graft, leaving only calcium phosphate and increased mineral crystallinity. Microcomputed tomography revealed that the Treated graft exhibited an increased high porosity (81%) and pore size compared to untreated bone, whereas the Sintered graft exhibited shrinkage, which reduced the porosity (72%), pore size and strut size. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy displayed crack formation around the pores of the Sintered graft. The Treated graft displayed median mechanical properties comparable to native cancellous bone and clinically available solutions, with an apparent modulus of 166 MPa, yield stress of 5.5 MPa and yield strain of 4.9%. In contrast, the Sintered graft exhibited a lower median apparent modulus of 57 MPa. It failed in a brittle manner at a median stress of 1.7 MPa and strain level of 2.9%, demonstrating the structural importance of the collagen phase. Additive manufacturing is widely used in the orthopaedic industry for the high freedom and flexibility in the design and production of personalized custom implants made of Ti6Al4V. Within this context, finite element modeling of 3D printed prostheses is a robust tool both to guide the design phase and to support clinical evaluations, possibly virtually describing the in-vivo behavior of the implant. Given realistic scenarios, a suitable description of the overall implant's mechanical behavior is unavoidable. Considering typical custom prostheses' designs (i.e. acetabular and hemipelvis implants), complex designs involving solid and/or trabeculated parts, and material distribution at different scales hinder a high-fidelity modeling of the prostheses. Moreover, uncertainties in the production and in the material characterization of small parts approaching the accuracy limit of the additive manufacturing technology still exist. While recent works suggest that the mechanical properties of thin 3D-printed parts may be peculiarly affected by specific processing parameters (i.e. powder grain size, printing orientation, samples' thickness) as compared to conventional Ti6Al4V alloy, the current numerical models make gross simplifications in describing the complex material behavior of each part at different scales. The present study focuses on two patient-specific acetabular and hemipelvis prostheses, with the aim of experimentally characterizing and numerically describing the dependency of the mechanical behavior of 3D printed parts on their peculiar scale, therefore, overcoming one major limitation of current numerical models. Coupling experimental activities with finite element analyses, the authors initially characterized 3D printed Ti6Al4V dog-bone samples at different scales, representative of the main material components of the investigated prostheses. Afterwards, the authors implemented the characterized material behaviors into finite element models to compare the implications of adopting scale-dependent vs. conventional scaleindependent approaches in predicting the experimental mechanical behavior of the prostheses in terms of their overall stiffness and the local strain distribution. The material characterization results highlighted the need for a scale-dependent reduction of the elastic modulus for thin samples compared to the conventional Ti6Al4V, which is fundamental to properly describe the overall stiffness and local strain distribution on the prostheses. Posterior spinal fixation systems are the gold standard to treat different column disorders using rods and screws. The proper connection between them is guaranteed by the Interconnection Mechanism (IM), consisting of different metallic subcomponents held together through the application of tightening torque. The response of the fixation system is defined by its overall stiffness, which in turn is governed by the local residual stress field arising during tightening. Although literature computational models for studying spinal fixation are becoming increasingly anatomically complex, most studies disregard completely the realistic modeling of the IM, namely choosing elastic-plastic material models and proper contact interactions. In this frame, the present study aims at increasing awareness in the field of spinal fixation modeling by investigating the mechanical response of the IM in terms of overall stiffness and local residual stresses.
