The agarophyte Gracilaria verrucosa (Hudson) Papenfuss was cultivated under greenhouse conditions in Modified Johnson Medium over a 5-month period. Biomass productivity ranged between 5.00 g L-1 to 16.37 g L-1 and the highest biomass was obtained in December. Relative growth rate (RGR) varied from 4.03±1.63 to 1.21±0.34% day-1. While the highest percentages of protein were found in December (20.28±0.94% of dw), the lowest percentages were in March (14.99±0.14% of dw). Phosphorus content ranged from 101.66±3.11 ppm (march) to 114.03±5.44 ppm (december). The lipid concentrations of G. verrucosa were measured within 2.39±0.77% dw and 2.66±0.94% dw. The agar yiel were determined between 9.65±1.12 and 18.64±2.38% of dw in december and march. The melting and gelling temperatures were stable through the experiment. The highest and the lowest values for both melting and gelling temperatures were 39.00±0.35°C (december) - 34.00±0.32°C (march) and 86.50±0.30°C (march) - 85.50±040°C (february), respectively. As a result of this study G. verrucosa could be cultivated in greenhouse conditions succesfully. Depending on the high growth rates, high concentrations of crude protein, phosphorus and agar of Gracilaria we conclude that it can be cultivated in greenhouse conditions. © Central Fisheries Research Institute (CFRI) Trabzon.

One forth (Approx. n=20) of the marine mammal species occur in the Mediterranean Basin. And they were represented by 14 species in the eastern Mediterranean Region. To date, a very few studies were carried out to determine the status of these marine mammals in this region including our main study area the Izmir Bay. Therefore, the authors carried out the present preliminary study to determine the status of the marine mammals in this Bay. The study was conducted between September 2001 and November 2002 via direct observations at sea, distribution/collection of the cetacean sighting questionnaires among seamen, and questionnaires applied to the fishermen. As the result of the study, three species were determined during the study period in the Izmir Bay. Two of those Tursiops truncatus and Stenella coeruleolba were determined occurring in all seasons. And the third one Delphinus delphis was determined all seasons except in winter months. T. truncatus was reported to be the most abundant species. During the study, it has been reported that except one occasion T. truncatus is the only species accidentally entangled to the fishing gears.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the colonization of the green alga Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea thirteen years after it was signalled in the Mediterranean Sea. The alga has been recorded along the coasts of 11 nations, developing on all kind of substrata, both in polluted and in unpolluted areas, between 0 and 70 m depth. The length of coastline affected by the invasion of C. racemosa var. cylindracea in Spain, France, Italy and Croatia ranged from 700 to 750 km at the end of 2003. The main aspects of the ecology of the species in the Mediterranean Sea and the effects of the invasion on human activities in coastal areas are also discussed
