Paleoclimatic constraints from mountain ranges separating major climate systems are important in understanding past climatic changes. Using the present-day glacial geomorphology combined with the GlaRe model, the last glacial maximum (LGM) of seven representative valley glaciers of the Pir Panjal Range (PPR), Kashmir Himalaya was reconstructed. The Range lies at the interface of the tropical and temperate climates in the NW Himalayas. The glacier reconstructions showed that the glaciers in the Range advanced ~10 km down the present-day cirque margins and attained a thickness of more than 200 m during the LGM. Using six different methods, the equilibrium line altitude (ELA) changes in the selected valleys of the PPR were estimated for which the LGM was reconstructed. ELA depressions calculated for the LGM vary from 374 m to 416 m with a mean of 395 m. The weighted average ELA of the Range lies at an altitude of 3922 m a.s.l showing a general increasing trend from SE to NW of the Range. The published chronology of the loess deposits, a proxy for glacial aridity, shows the evidence of significant glacial advances starting around 350 kya in the valley, which is consistent with the evidence of both the pre- and post-LGM advances observed in this study. The presence of extensive glacier features all across the PPR and the presence of a few small heavily debris-covered glaciers in the Range points towards the rapid deglaciation in the area.

Lors de la campagne de terrain (INP, AOROC) menée en 2018 sur le site de Dougga (Afrique proconsulaire) sous la direction conjointe de Samir Aounallah et Véronique Brouquier-Reddé, la découverte d’un nouveau bloc de la meta prima du cirque a permis d’apporter des précisions sur la datation de l’édifice et a conduit à modifier considérablement les textes que l’on avait l’habitude de restituer sur les deux metae aux extrémités de la spina. Ces nouveaux éléments amènent à une réévaluation du rôle des magistrats dédicataires du monument et, surtout, suscitent une réflexion sur la composition de la dédicace à la famille impériale qui avait contribué à la fortune historiographique du texte. During the 2018 field campaign (by INP, AOROC) at the archaeological site of Dougga (Africa Proconsularis) under the joint direction of Samir Aounallah and Véronique Brouquier-Reddé, the discovery of a new block of the meta prima of the circus has clarified the dating of the building and has led to a considerable revision of the restoration of the text that was inscribed on the two metae at the ends of the spina. Alors que l’histoire des spectacles commence à gagner ses lettres de noblesse, celle du cirque demeure la grande oubliée de ce bel essor, comme si le dénigrement dont le cirque traditionnel est aujourd’hui la cible rejaillissait sur la connaissance de cet univers. Or, faire du cirque un objet d’histoire est l’un des meilleurs moyens de jeter sur lui un regard dépourvu de préjugés et de comprendre ce qu’il incarne dans notre patrimoine. Il y apparaît à partir des années 1770, importé par des écuyers britanniques dont le plus célèbre est Philip Astley, considéré comme l’inventeur du cirque moderne. Il s’y développe dans un monde où la culture équestre est dominante jusque dans les années 1890 et parfois au-delà. Il s’y transforme avec l’invention de la culture de masse, de la Belle Époque aux Années Folles et vit tant bien que mal sur cette lancée jusqu’à la Seconde Guerre mondiale. The history of the shows has generally abandoned that of the circus when it attracted a large and elegant public in the 19th century. The origins of the circus testify of themselves to the way in which the track arts have attracted both an aristocratic and a popular audience. Its evolution in the nineteenth century only confirms its success with elites fried of equestrian performances. His changes in the 20th century, focused on wildlife exhibitions, changed the composition of his audience.

The article examines the relationship between risk and pain as elements present in the construction, exhibition and reception of aerial circus shows. There is a bibliographic review on the theme of pain and risk, analyzing them as perceptive processes that encompass biological, affective and cultural issues. Finally, it describes the aerial circus performance, identifying that the relationship between these phenomena appears as an imbricated paradox in its presentation. L’article examine la relation entre le risque et la douleur comme éléments présents dans la construction, l’exposition et la réception des spectacles de cirque aérien. Pour ce faire, il effectue une revue bibliographique sur le thème de la douleur et du risque, en les analysant comme des processus perceptifs qui englobent des questions biologiques, affectives et culturelles. Enfin, il caractérise la performance de cirque aérien en identifiant que la relation entre ces phénomènes se présente comme un paradoxe imbriqué dans sa présentation. Para tanto, realiza uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o tema dor e risco, analisando-os como processos perceptivos que englobam questões biológicas, afetivas e culturais. Dans les programmations des cours d’éducation physique, les pratiques artistiques sont peu représentées au regard des pratiques sportives. Si les arts du cirque offrent une alternative à certains enseignants peu enclins à adopter la gestuelle de la danse (Garcia, 2013), leur enseignement en milieu scolaire se limite encore souvent à une juxtaposition de techniques (Coasne, 2013). L’étude menée montre que le manque de formation est le principal obstacle évoqué par les enseignants pour mettre en œuvre une démarche de création artistique avec leurs élèves. Par ailleurs, les conditions favorisant le développement des pratiques artistiques en EPS apparaissent largement en contradiction avec le respect de « l’orthodoxie scolaire » (Arnaud, 1990). L’engagement des élèves dans un processus de création en arts du cirque s’inscrit alors dans des temps et des espaces d’expérimentation dont les règles diffèrent de celles de l’espace scolaire traditionnel. Le cirque et les pratiques physiques artistiques constituent ainsi des leviers de transformation de la forme scolaire (Vincent, 1994), des hétérotopies (Foucault, 1966) autorisant la transgression des normes et la prise de risque, des tiers-lieux pédagogiques où la relation éducative et le rapport au savoir sont questionnés, transformés. Artistic practices are insufficiently present in physical education class programming compared to sports practices. Although the circus arts offer an alternative to some teachers who are not inclined to adopt the gestures of dance (Garcia, 2013), their teaching in schools are often limited to a juxtaposition of techniques (Coasne, 2013). Lack of training is the main obstacle mentioned by teachers to implement an artistic creation process with their pupils. Moreover, the conditions that foster the development of artistic practices in physical education appear to be largely in contradiction with the « school orthodoxy » (Arnaud, 1990). The involvement of pupils in a creative process in the circus arts often takes place in spaces of pedagogical experimentation whose rules differ from the traditional school space, "other spaces" (Foucault, 1966) that allow transgression of norms and risk-taking, pedagogical third places where the educational relationship and the rapport to knowledge are questioned and transformed.

Cet article vise a analyser le degre de segmentation et de durcissement du systeme d’emploi artistique en France en etudiant le cas de la danse et du cirque. A partir d’une repartition fondee sur le volume et la structure d’activite, il s’agit de saisir des conditions d’appartenance a un «noyau professionnel » , ainsi que ses effets sur le maintien en activite. Les donnees issues des bases AEM et DUS de Pole Emploi sont mobilisees a ces fins. Elles permettent, pour la periode 2006‑2016, de traiter exhaustivement les 8.5 millions contrats de travail renvoyant aux 100 000 individus ayant eu une activite dans l’un des deux domaines artistiques retenus. Dans les deux cas, mais suivant des proportions et des rythmes variables, il est constate un durcissement des conditions d’emploi et des conditions d’acces au segment des artistes susceptibles de beneficier du regime de l’intermittence du spectacle. Parallelement, l’eviction des pretendants a l’entree sur ces deux marches du travail tend a s’intensifier.

Global environmental change is threatening freshwater biodiversity with ecological impacts predicted to be particularly severe in high-altitude regions. Despite this, an ecological understanding of high-altitude pond networks remains patchy, with only limited knowledge of the environmental and spatial predictors of taxonomic and functional diversity. Moreover, previous studies of pond ecosystems have focused primarily on taxonomic richness and largely overlooked functional diversity.This study examined the influence of local environmental and spatial factors on taxonomic and functional α and β diversity (including the turnover and nestedness-resultant components) of 17 high-altitude (~2,500 m above sea level) pond macroinvertebrate communities, in the Macun Cirque, Switzerland.Spatial processes (pond connectivity) were important drivers for taxonomic α diversity, while local environmental variables (pond permanence and surface area) were important determinants of functional α diversity. Species turnover was the most important component of β diversity for taxonomic composition, and functional composition demonstrated a nested spatial pattern.Variation in taxonomic and functional composition (and the turnover and nestedness components of β diversity) were determined by local environmental variables despite the limited environmental gradients within the pond network. No significant effects of spatial variables on community composition were recorded for either facet of diversity, indicating that compositional variation was determined at a local scale. Water temperature, depth and pond permanence were consistently the most important measured drivers of diversity.Given the importance of both spatial and environmental variables in structuring taxonomic and functional diversity, landscape-scale conservation and management activities that aim to improve or protect high-altitude freshwater biodiversity should focus on maintaining connectivity among ponds and environmental heterogeneity, particularly pond surface area, water depth, and hydroperiod. Understanding the mechanisms driving taxonomic and functional diversity will be critically important for the management and conservation of macroinvertebrate communities in high-altitude pond networks in the face of climatic warming.

This article is about the recording, photographic at first and then written, accomplished by the clown Cadilac, and highlights the ways of acting in small “mambembe” circuses and the beginning of a circus troupe, in the period between 1950 and 1970. The research, completed in February 2012, had as its final result the thesis in the field of Performing Arts entitled The memory of the mambembe circus: the clown Cadilacand the reinvention of a tradition. For this article, a survey research was used, with data crossing between interviews, documents from public archives, photos, the clown’s ownwritings, beyond several publications on the subject., Cet article traite de l’archivage et de la conservation, notamment photographique mais aussi écrite, faite par le clown Cadilac. Il permet d’appréhender le jeu circacien dansle contexte des petits cirques itinérants ainsi que le début d’une troupe de cirque dans une période située entre 1950 et 1970. L’enquête, réalisée en février 2012, a abouti à la rédaction d’un mémoire dans le domaine des arts du spectacle intitulé La mémoire du cirque itinérante: le clown Cadilac et la réinvention de la tradition. Cet article s’appuie sur les interviews, documents d’archives, photos, es écrits personnels du clown et aussi sur des publications existantes autour de ce sujet, procédant à un croisement des données., Este artigo trata do registro, a princípio registro fotográfico e depois escrito, realizado pelo palhaço Cadilac e evidencia a forma de atuação nos pequenos circos mambembes eo início de uma troupe circense, no período entre 1950 e 1970. A pesquisa, concluída em fevereiro de 2012, teve como resultado final a dissertação na área de Artes Cênicas intitulada A memória do circo mambembe: o palhaço Cadilac e a reinvenção de uma tradição. Para a realização deste artigo, utilizou-se o levantamento da pesquisa, em que foram feitos cruzamentos de dados entre as entrevistas, documentos de arquivos públicos, fotos, escritos do próprio palhaço, além de diversas publicações sobre o assunto em questão.

Funded through the ERASMUS+ program, COSMIC (CO-creating and Sharing digital Methodologies In Circus Education) is a project led by the French Federation of Circus Schools (FFEC) and the European Federation of Professional Circus Schools (FEDEC). In all, eleven partners were involved in COSMIC, including nine circus schools from seven different countries as well as associated partners. The project took place from September 2020 to December 2022. Its aim is to introduce European professional circus schools to the use of digital technology in order to offer innovative teaching methods. The starting point for COSMIC was to initiate a discussion to develop a new design of the “Student Artistic Booklet” using an open-source video annotation web application: MemoRekall. In return, the dialogue with the application design team needed to make it possible to develop new features that meet the needs of circus education. Indeed, although MemoRekall was designed for the performing arts, a co-design approach implemented throughout the COSMIC project has enabled it to evolve to take into account the specific characteristics of the circus, which is as much a performing art as it is a top-level sport. The purpose of this white paper is to review the different stages and challenges of the collaboration between the circus school teaching teams and students with MemoRekall’s research and development team. In particular, it presents the contents of the labs, the methodologies used, the technological choices made, and the implementation of different teaching scenarios.Publication available in English and French.; Financé grâce au programme ERASMUS+, COSMIC (CO-creating and Sharing digital Methodologies In Circus Education) est un projet porté par la FFEC (Fédération Française des Écoles de Cirque) et la FEDEC (Fédération Européenne des Écoles de Cirque Professionnelles). Son objectif est d’initier les écoles de cirque professionnelles européennes à l'utilisation du numérique afin de proposer des modalités pédagogiques innovantes complémentaires des modalités de l’enseignement traditionnel. Le point de départ de COSMIC est d'entreprendre un échange pour développer une nouvelle conception du « Livret Artistique des élèves » en utilisant une application web d’annotation vidéo open source : MemoRekall. En retour, le dialogue avec l’équipe de conception de l’application doit permettre de développer de nouvelles fonctionnalités qui répondent aux besoins de l'enseignement du cirque. En effet, si MemoRekall a été conçue pour les arts de la scène, une approche de co-conception mise en œuvre tout au long du projet COSMIC a permis de la faire évoluer pour prendre en compte les spécificités du cirque, lequel relève autant du spectacle vivant que du sport de haut niveau. Ce livre blanc a pour objet de revenir sur les différentes étapes et enjeux de la collaboration entre les équipes pédagogiques des écoles de cirque et les élèves avec l’équipe de recherche et de développement de MemoRekall. Il présente en particulier les contenus des laboratoires, les méthodologies utilisées, les choix technologiques effectués ainsi que la mise en œuvre de différents scénarios pédagogiques. This teaching and learning toolkit is designed for teachers in circus schools who wish to use video annotation as part of their pedagogy. The videoannotation tool used is the free and open-source web application MemoRekall (www.memorekall.com). The toolkit is the result of the work carried outwithin the framework of the COSMIC project (CO-creating and Sharing digital Methodologies In Circus Education), funded by the ERASMUS+ program. This project was led by the FFEC (Fédération Française des Écoles de Cirque) and FEDEC (Fédération Européenne des Écoles de Cirque Professionnelles/European Federation of Professional Circus Schools) from 2020 to 2022. Its objective is to introduce European professional circus schools to the use of digital technology and develop innovative teaching methods that complement traditional ones. The first part of the toolkit concerns teaching and learning scenarios. The design of these scenarios was the subject of various laboratories in professional circus schools. We have selected nine main scenarios developed by teachers from these schools. They are explained here in the form of templates and illustrated by capsules created with the students. For each scenario, the target audience, teaching goal, video content and annotations, different steps, and integration in the pedagogy are specified. The second part of the toolkit gives MemoRekall users tutorials for the advanced functions of MemoRekall. Comme le développe Réjane Sénac (2015, 2019), « l’égalité sans condition » est un horizon de non-domination structurelle et relationnelle où, dans le monde scolaire, les élèves en mixité ne seraient plus assigné·es à des catégorisations sexuées, naturalisées et hiérarchisées (Szerdahelyi, 2018). Nous proposons dans le cadre de cette contribution des pistes d’intervention en Éducation Physique et Sportive (EPS) au Cours Préparatoire (CP) à partir d’analyses didactiques des phénomènes d’enseignement-apprentissage. Nos recherches en didactique de l’EPS se sont attachées à rendre compte de la « co-construction des savoirs et du genre dans la classe » à partir d’observations in situ (Verscheure, 2020). Nous analysons l’action didactique conjointe d’une enseignante et de ses élèves, confronté·es à des objets de savoirs émancipateurs, afin de pouvoir agir et raisonner au-delà des normes traditionnellement sexuées. Nous nous appuyons sur une illustration - extraite d’une recherche collaborative de longue durée visant à conduire et accompagner le changement des pratiques enseignantes - dans une séquence d’apprentissage en cirque, en CP avec une enseignante chevronnée, mais non spécialiste des activités sportives, et deux de ses élèves : une fille et un garçon. L’analyse révèle que, compte-tenu de la participation à la recherche collaborative, la prise en compte des effets de la direction d’étude de cette enseignante et de la variabilité des positionnements de genre épistémiques des élèves au regard des savoirs visés peut être un levier d’accès à la réussite de tous et toutes en EPS afin d’aller vers une « égalité sans condition ».

This study focuses on the duet in dance shows and circus acrobatic lifts. At the beginning of the research, I decided to use the neologism "dansacrobatie", to serve a precise aesthetic look, avoiding placing myself on one side or the other of the two disciplines. By elaborating on a corpus of works, between the years 2000 and today, I try to document the singularities of this aesthetic. It is through analyses of shows, concepts about the body and movement, and sensitive discourses from my dance practices and acrobatic lifts, that I present the keys to looking these works, performers, gestures, scenography and theatrical material.; Cette étude se centre sur le duo dans les spectacles de danse et de portés acrobatiques circassiens. Dès le début de la recherche, j’ai pris le parti d’utiliser le néologisme de « dansacrobatie », pour servir un regard esthétique précis, évitant de me placer d’un côté ou de l’autre d’une des deux disciplines. En élaborant un corpus d’œuvres, compris entre les années 2000 à aujourd’hui, je tente de rendre compte des singularités de cette esthétique. C’est au travers d’analyses de spectacles, de concepts pour penser le corps et le mouvement, de discours sensibles issus de mes propres pratiques de danses et de portés acrobatiques, que je fournis des clefs de lecture pour observer ces pièces, les interprètes, les gestes, la scénographie et la matière dramaturgique.

La planche coréenne est une discipline de cirque exigeante d’un point de vue technique. Il s’agit d’une longue planche à bascule sur laquelle deux acrobates, placés à chaque extrémité, se catapultent continuellement pour effectuer des sauts acrobatiques. Les acrobates utilisent une technique spécifique pour le décollage et l’atterrissage. La planche coréenne, comme tout équipement de cirque, n’a pas de standard de fabrication et il existe une grande variété de planches. Les acrobates, les entraîneurs et les concepteurs d'équipements bénéficieraient d’avoir plus d'informations sur la biomécanique de la performance et sur la mécanique de la planche, afin d'améliorer le développement des techniques acrobatiques et la conception des planches. L’objectif de la thèse était de mieux comprendre l’interaction entre l’équipement de cirque et la performance acrobatique en planche coréenne. À cet égard, les quatre objectifs spécifiques étaient de : (1) Établir l’influence de la hauteur de saut, du participant, de la planche et de la technique de réception sur les forces d’impact et les taux de chargement; (2) Quantifier l’influence de plusieurs facteurs biomécaniques cinématiques sur la hauteur de saut; (3) Déterminer la différence de contribution musculaire et de durée des phases du mouvement entre acrobates débutants et acrobates élites; et (4) Caractériser mécaniquement différentes planches et mettre en évidence la contribution du renvoi de flexion de la planche sur la hauteur de sauts. Cette thèse présente l’ensemble des travaux effectués pour lier les caractéristiques de la planche au mouvement de l’acrobate. En effet, le mouvement de l’acrobate, sauter à grande hauteur, génère des forces élevées sur la planche lors de la réception, ce qui met en mouvement la planche. L’équipement ensuite permet un transfert de force vers l’acrobate qui s’élance. Finalement, ce dernier doit utiliser une technique optimale avec une synchronisation et une contribution musculaire précis, afin de gagner une hauteur suffisante pour la performance. Nos différentes études ont permis de montrer que le facteur qui influence le plus les forces d’impact et le taux de chargement lors de la réception est la hauteur de saut (40% d’influence relative). La force maximale mesurée est de 13.5 fois le poids corporel de l’acrobate, ce qui peut représenter un risque de blessure. La hauteur de saut est en majorité influencée par la vitesse verticale du centre de masse de l’acrobate-partenaire qui se réceptionne, de la vitesse verticale de la planche et de l’amplitude des hanches lors du décollage. Ces deux derniers paramètres peuvent être contrôlés par les acrobates ou les concepteurs de planche coréenne. Nous démontrons, de plus, que les acrobates débutants sont plus longs dans la préparation au décollage, le décollage et l’atterrissage comparativement aux acrobates experts. Cependant, il n’y avait pas de différence claire entre les débutants et les professionnels quant à l’activité musculaire lors du décollage et atterrissage, ce qui indique que la temporalité est sûrement plus importante que l’activité musculaire. Finalement, le paramètre mécanique le plus important pour quantifier et comparer les planches est la raideur. Les quatre planches de l’étude ont une raideur qui varie entre 12.2 kN/m et 19.6 kN/m. Ce paramètre peut probablement guider les futures conceptions de planche. Collectivement, ces quatre études mettent en évidence que la synchronisation temporelle du mouvement des acrobates et du mouvement de la planche est l’élément crucial dans cette discipline., Korean teeterboard is a technically demanding circus discipline. The apparatus resembles a seesaw, and two acrobats take turns jumping vertically, performing complex acrobatic figures and landing back on the apparatus. Acrobats use a specific technique during take-off and landing. Furthermore, like most circus equipment, there are no standards regarding the design of the teeterboard and there is a wide variety of teeterboards. Acrobats, trainers and equipment’s designers would benefit to know more about the relationship between the biomechanics of the performance and the mechanics of the board. This understanding would help improving acrobatic techniques and optimize the design of teeterboards. The purpose of the thesis was to better understand the interaction between the circus equipment and the acrobats’ performance in Korean teeterboard. To this end, this thesis was divided into four specific goals: (1) Define the influence of the jump height, the teeterboard and the landing technique on impact forces and loading rates; (2) Quantify the influence of various kinematic factors to the jump height; (3) Determine the differences between expert and novice acrobats with respect to muscular contribution and duration of the phases of the movement ; and, (4) mechanically characterize different types of teeterboards and highlight the contribution of the recoil effect to the jump height. This thesis covers the work carried out to link the characteristics of the teeterboard to the movement of the acrobat. The movement of the acrobat, i.e., jumping at high height, generates high forces during landing, which set in motion the board. The equipment then enables the transfer of this force to the other acrobat taking-off. This acrobat should use an optimal technique with a precise timing and muscular contribution, to gain sufficient height for their performance. This body of work demonstrated that the most important factor influencing the impact forces and loading rates was jump height (40% of relative influence). Maximal recorded force was 13.5 times the acrobat’s bodyweight, raising concerns about risk of injury. Jump height was mainly influenced by the vertical velocity of the center of mass of the acrobat landing, the vertical velocity of the teeterboard and the hip range of motion at take-off. The last two parameters can be controlled by acrobats, trainers, or designers of Korean teeterboard. We also found that novice acrobats are longer in the following phases: preparation for take-off, take-off, and landing. However, there was no clear difference in muscular amplitude during take-off and landing between novice and professional acrobats. This indicates that timing may be more important than muscular amplitude. We showed that recoil effect (elastic strain energy of the board) strongly contributed to the jump height (46% of relative influence). Finally, the most important mechanical parameter to quantify and compare teeterboards was the stiffness. The stiffness of the four teeterboards analyzed in this study ranged from 12.2 kN/m to19.6 kN/m. This result can guide future designs of teeterboard. The results from this thesis highlight the fact that temporal synchronization of the movement from both acrobats and the movement of the board is crucial in this discipline.

The Skuta Glacier in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps (in northern Slovenia) is one of the two remaining glaciers in Slovenia. It is located in a cirque oriented toward the northwest, which shields it from sunlight for most of the year. The glacier lies at an average elevation of 2070m. In recent years, its average area has measured around 1.5 hectares. Monitoring of the glacier has been performed since 1946. In 1962, regular photographing of the glacier with various cameras started from various non-fixed standpoints. Using the single image interactive orientation acquisition method, in which a single photograph is compared with the projection of a modern digital terrain model, seventeen photographs covering the period from 1970 to 2015 were used to acquire the 3D-perimeters of the glacier. The data shows that the elevation of glacier’s upper edge decreased by approximately 40m in the last half-century. Changes in the glacier’s area and average upper edge elevation were compared with average annual temperature and maximum seasonal snow cover depth.

In the European Alps, almost half the glacier volume has disappeared over the past 150 years. The loss is reflected in glacier retreat and ice surface lowering even at high altitude. In steep glacial cirques, surface lowering exposes rock to atmospheric conditions probably for the very first time in several millennia. Instability of rockwalls has long been identified as one of the direct consequences of deglaciation, but so far cirque-wide quantification of rockfall at high resolution is missing. Based on terrestrial lidar, a rockfall inventory for the permafrost-affected rockwalls of two rapidly deglaciating cirques in the Central Alps of Austria (Kitzsteinhorn) is established. Over 6 years (2011–2017), 78 rockwall scans were acquired to generate data of high spatial and temporal resolution. Overall, 632 rockfalls were registered, ranging from 0.003 to 879.4 m3, mainly originating from pre-existing structural rock weaknesses. A total of 60 % of the rockfall volume detached from less than 10 vertical metres above the glacier surface, indicating enhanced rockfall activity over tens of years following deglaciation. Debuttressing seems to play a minor effect only. Rather, preconditioning is assumed to start inside the randkluft (void between cirque wall and glacier) where measured sustained freezing and ample supply of liquid water likely cause enhanced physical weathering and high quarrying stresses. Following deglaciation, pronounced thermomechanical strain is induced and an active layer penetrates into the formerly perennially frozen bedrock. These factors likely cause the observed paraglacial rockfall increase close to the glacier surface. This paper, the first of two companion pieces, presents the most extensive dataset of high-alpine rockfall to date and the first systematic documentation of a cirque-wide erosion response of glaciated rockwalls to recent climate warming.

Rare and endangered habitat types and vascular plant species were studied in the canyon associated with slope cirque “Gorodskaya shchel' (Town Crack)" in the southern part of Khibiny Mountains (Murmansk Region). Habitat types are interpreted based on a phytosociological approach (Braun-Blanquet classification). Habitat type “D4.2. Basic mountain flushes and streamsides, with a rich arctic-montane flora" of the Emerald Network (partly coincides with type 3220 “Alpine rivers and the herbaceous vegetation along their banks" of Council Directive 92/43/EEC) includes two associations:Mniobryo–Epilobietum hornemanniiNordhagen 1943 of allianceMniobryo–Epilobion hornemanniiNordhagen 1943, сlassMontio–CardamineteaBr.-Bl. et Tx. ex Klika et Hadač 1944, andOxyrietum digynaeGjaerevoll 1956 of allianceSaxifrago stellaris–Oxyrion digynaeGjaerevoll 1956, classSalicetea herbaceaeBr.-Bl. 1948. These habitats harbor a number of Red Data Book species: 16 rare vascular plants including two species of the Red Data Book of Russia, four species of Red Data Book of Murmansk Region and ten species which need special attention to their state in the natural environment if the Murmansk Region occurred in the studied canyon, cirque and nearest surroundings. As the area is out of the borders of National Park “Khibiny" and has high conservation value, it is necessary to establish here the botanical nature monument.

Cirque erosion contributes significantly to mountain denudation and is a key element of glaciated mountain topography. Despite long-standing efforts, rates of rockwall retreat and the proportional contributions of low-, mid- and high-magnitude rockfalls have remained poorly constrained. Here, a unique, terrestrial-lidar-derived rockfall inventory (2011–2017) of two glaciated cirques in the Hohe Tauern range, Central Alps, Austria, is analysed. The mean cirque wall retreat rate of 1.9 mm a−1 ranks in the top range of reported values and is mainly driven by enhanced rockfall from the lowermost, freshly deglaciated rockwall sections. Retreat rates are significantly elevated over decades subsequent to glacier downwasting. Elongated cirque morphology and recorded cirque wall retreat rates indicate headward erosion is clearly outpacing lateral erosion, most likely due to the cataclinal backwalls, which are prone to large dip-slope failures. The rockfall magnitude–frequency distribution – the first such distribution derived for deglaciating cirques – follows a distinct negative power law over 4 orders of magnitude. Magnitude–frequency distributions in glacier-proximal and glacier-distal rockwall sections differ significantly due to an increased occurrence of large rockfalls in recently deglaciated areas. In this paper, the second of two companion pieces, we show how recent climate warming shapes glacial landforms, controls spatiotemporal rockfall variation in glacial environments and indicates a transient signal with decadal-scale exhaustion of rockfall activity immediately following deglaciation crucial for future hazard assessments.
