2. Quantum stabilization of a single-photon emitter in a coupled microcavity--half-cavity system

Abstract

We analyze the quantum dynamics of a two-level emitter in a resonant microcavity with optical feedback provided by a distant mirror (i.e., a half-cavity) with a focus on stabilizing the emitter-microcavity subsystem. Our treatment is fully carried out in the framework of cavity quantum electrodynamics. Specifically, we focus on the dynamics of a perturbed dark state of the emitter to ascertain its stability (existence of time oscillatory solutions around the candidate state) or lack thereof. In particular, we find conditions under which multiple feedback modes of the half cavity contribute to the stability, showing certain analogies with the Lang-Kobayashi equations, which describe a laser diode subject to classical optical feedback., Comment: 9 pages

11. Reconfigurable multimode photonic-crystal waveguides

Abstract

We present the design and analysis of a novel reconfigurable photonic-crystal waveguide (PCW). The predefined waveguide is the result of the refractive-index variation of three rows of holes that can be obtained by the infiltration of liquids within what are otherwise air holes in a two-dimensional triangular-lattice photonic crystal. We compute the power transmission through the reconfigurable PCWs as well as through arbitrary waveguide bends. The advantages of writing reconfigurable PCW of a multimode nature are highlighted. We demonstrate the necessity to infiltrate high-refractive-index substances to obtain efficient power transfer via reconfigurable manner. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.

The effect on the time-delay identification of the tunable parameters is studied and the difficult time-delay-identification scenarios have depended on the time-scales of the system dynamics as it undergoes a route to chaos.

Abstract

Photonic crystals waveguide (PCWs) obtained by introducing line defects in otherwise period 2-D PCs are explored with the aim of enhancing the typical poor and low-band-width transmission through tight bends. It is seen that the enhancement of power transmission ([nu] > 90%) across bandwidths of 95 nm, even without optimizing the corners is achieved with 30 degree PCW bends.

Abstract

The coherent control of excitons in quantum wells at high repetition rates is investigated. The aim was to pinpoint the practical constraints for application in high-bit-rate optical switching. A shaped optical gating pulse is used to control the areal density of excitons as well as the index of refraction at the signal frequency. The implementation of such a mechanism in 100-Gb/s optical systems is hampered by a tradeoff between optical pathlength and excitation density.

A theory that includes radiation dynamics and localized-exciton decay elucidates exciton-induced polaritons and intrinsic emissions in quantum wells, present in planar optical microcavities. Time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy measures the radiative decay and radiation dynamic parameters, related to the restricted and radiation modes of the optical field, and the relation between emission and temperature.

Abstract

A theoretical proposal to explore the intrinsic exciton spontaneous emission (radiative lifetimes) in semiconductor quantum wires is discussed. Radiative destruction in low-dimensional systems varies with bulk, where recombination is necessarily dependent on phonons, impurities, defects, surfaces and interfaces. Radiative destruction of the order of 100 ps can be estimated. The influence of electromagnetic coupling in quantum-wire arrays was studied. It was concluded that excitons in quantum wells have greater intrinsic radiative decay periods than the excitons in quantum wires.

Abstract

A program of research was carried out in which theoretical investigations into the simultaneous manipulation of carriers (electrons, holes, and ultimately excitons) and light in semiconductor nanostructures such as quantum wells were conducted. The manipulation of the carrier and optical dynamics will be achieved by the use of specially tailored ultrafast optical pulses, multicolor laser fields, millimeter or submillimeter electromagnetic pulses, or combinations of the above. Because the relevant time scale for the carrier dynamics may be less than the characteristic dephasing time of the carriers, the evolution of the system can be coherent; phase effects play a dominant role. Such shaped pulses and multicolor fields may be used to coherently control optical excitations in semiconductors in order to access quantum mechanical states, which are otherwise difficult to attain.

Abstract

A scheme for ultrahigh-speed all-optical switching based on semiconductor heterostructures was explored theoretically. The approach was anticipated to be applicable to systems operating in the 10 to 100 gigabit/sec regime. Our role was to simulate the carrier dynamics in semiconductor heterostructures under ultrafast (picosecond and subpicosecond) laser excitation. Pulse characteristics were found to coherently populate and depopulate the semiconductor heterostructure of carriers on the picosecond timescale.

Abstract

A workshop was held in Coeur d'Alene, idaho, 2-4 February 1998 as an Optical Society of America Topical Meeting. The research areas covered by the workshop roughly fell under the heading of ultrafast and coherent nonlinear optical properties of semiconductors; nevertheless, a number of speakers from other fields presented papers at the conference in order to stimulate cross-disciplinary discussion. Approximately thirty papers were presented, and a proceedings was published by the Optical Society of America as a volume in their Trends in Optics and Photonics series. AFOSR funds supported the travel and local expenses of eight invited speakers.
