Controllable quantum many-body systems are platforms for fundamental investigations into the nature of entanglement and promise to deliver computational speed-up for a broad class of algorithms and simulations. In particular, engineering entanglement within a dense spin ensemble can turn it into a robust quantum memory or a computational platform. Recent experimental progress in dense central-spin systems motivates the design of algorithms that use a central-spin qubit as a convenient proxy for the ensemble. Here we propose a protocol that uses a central spin to initialize two dense spin ensembles into a pure antipolarized state and from there creates a many-body entangled state—a singlet—from the combined ensemble. We quantify the protocol performance for multiple material platforms and show that it can be implemented even in the presence of realistic levels of decoherence and diffusion. Our protocol introduces an algorithmic approach to the preparation of a known many-body state and to entanglement engineering in a dense spin ensemble, which can be extended towards a broad class of collective quantum states.

Abstract The evolution of properties of crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE)‐based insulating materials under radio‐chemical ageing conditions is presented and discussed. In total, seven different polymer compounds were tested, characterised by an increasing quantity of additives, for example, antioxidants (AOs) and fillers as flame retardants. Samples were analysed using different testing techniques, that is, Fourier Transform Infra‐Red and dielectric spectroscopy. This allowed a broad characterisation of the polymer, bringing to good correlations between the arising of new chemical groups caused by ageing and the modifications on the complex permittivity. Phenol‐based AOs are found to be the most efficient in terms of protection against oxidation. On the contrary, flame retardants are concluded not to have any impact on the material ageing. Acquired data were then treated using the principal component analysis. The data treatment successfully distinguished the material composition (with and without additives) and the ageing environments. The results confirm the relevance of this analysis in understanding the impact of irradiation on the chemical and functional properties of the polymer materials studied.

Purifying a high-temperature ensemble of quantum particles toward a known state is a key requirement to exploit quantum many-body effects. An alternative to passive cooling, which brings a system to its ground state, is active feedback, which stabilizes the system at a chosen target state. This alternative, if realized, offers additional control capabilities for the design of quantum states. Here we present a feedback algorithm applied to a quantum system, which is capable of stabilizing the collective state of an ensemble from its maximum entropy state to the limit of single quantum fluctuations. Our algorithmic approach maximizes the rate of state purification given the system’s physical constants; thus it remains the optimal feedback approach even in the presence of dissipation and disorder. We test experimentally the robustness of this feedback on the highly inhomogeneous nuclear-spin ensemble of a semiconductor quantum dot, reducing nuclear-spin fluctuations 83-fold, down to 5.7(2) spin macrostates. Simulations demonstrate that without system-specific inhomogeneities, our algorithm can purify the system down to single-spin fluctuations. Further, we exploit our algorithmic approach to tailor nontrivial nuclear-spin distributions that go beyond simple polarization, including weighted bimodality and latticed multistability. This control is a precursor toward quantum-correlated macrostates, which an extended version of our algorithm could generate in homogeneous systems.
