Continuity and change have become crucial themes for the built environment and heritage buildings; also in the education and practice of architects. Embedding built heritage values into studio-based design education is a daunting new challenge that demands new didactic perspectives and tools. To address the dilemmas that come with design assignments for adaptive reuse, an experiment with new didactic analytical tools has been conducted in the Heritage & Architecture (H&A) architectural design studios at the Delft University of Technology. The analysis attempts to connect matter--physical structures--and meaning in a structured graphical process through predefined mapping exercises. Our aim is to introduce a step-by-step method for exploration that can form the foundation of values-based design from built heritage. Central to our multifaceted approach is a specially developed matrix that is meant to support design-oriented analysis of heritage buildings. This paper situates the H&A perspective on the adaptive reuse of valorised buildings within the heritage discourse and architectural design education in general and further gives insight into the didactics, the tools, their uses and initial results. After a critical reflection on our points of departure, based in an evaluation of results, peer discussion and student evaluation, we conclude that the applied methodology is instructive to the educational goals but also merits further development. One of the lessons learnt for future teaching includes allowing students freedom to discover values themselves. An important conclusion is that an earlier and broader foundation that engages the continuation of tangible and intangible heritage values in the ever-changing built environment is required in architectural educational practice.

In agricultural production, it is crucial to increase the availability of phosphorus (P) in cultivated soil to solve the P limitation. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have been proven to promote crop nutrient absorption effectively, while biochar can lead to improvements in soil properties. However, the possible synergistic effect of AMF and biochar on P uptake by crops as well as its underlying mechanisms are unclear. In this study, we conducted a pot experiment to explore the effects of biochar and AMF (Glomus etunicatum) on the community of rhizospheric phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs) of maize (Zea mays L. Xianyu-335) using metagenomic methods. The experiment used 0 mg P2O5 g·kg−1 soil (P0) and 30 mg P2O5 g·kg−1 soil (P30) application rates. Each P application rate included 0 (NC), 20 g·kg−1 biochar (BC) addition, inoculation AMF, and without AMF treatments (NM) for a total of eight treatments. During the experiment, both the P uptake and the biomass of maize were measured. The study found that the combination of AMF and biochar significantly increased the mycorrhizal colonization rate of maize roots, regardless of P application level. It was observed that the P uptake by maize was significantly increased when exposed to a combination of AMF and biochar. The increase in P uptake in P0 treatments was 67% higher than the sum of the effects of biochar and AMF inoculation alone. The increase was only 35% higher in P30 treatments, demonstrating a substantially higher interactive effect under P0 than under P30 conditions. The AM-BC treatments significantly increased the abundance of Streptomyces, Bacillus, and Pseudomonas, genera that are known to contain PSMs. In addition, the abundance of genes related to P-cycling (gcd, phoD, and ugpQ) in PSMs increased significantly by 1.5–1.8 times in AM-BC treatments compared with NM-BC and AM-NC treatments under P0 conditions. This increase was significantly and positively correlated with the P uptake. Overall, the results suggest that biochar can help AMF colonize the roots, increasing the functional roles of PSMs in the rhizosphere, which in turn promotes P uptake and biomass in maize. Background: Suicide among male construction workers are reported to be disproportionally high compared to the working age population. However, there is minimal understanding of the prevalence and associated factors for suicidal ideation, non-suicidal self-injury, and suicide attempt among this occupational group globally. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a large sample of male construction workers in Ireland (n = 1,585). We investigated the prevalence of suicidal ideation, non-suicidal self-injury and suicide attempts and sociodemographic, occupational, and mental health factors associated with these three outcomes. Multivariable Poisson regression was performed to estimate the prevalence rate ratio of suicidal ideation (model 1 primary outcome), while multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratio of non-suicidal self-injury (model 2 primary outcome), and suicide attempt (model 3 primary outcome). Results: The lifetime prevalence rate for suicidal ideation was 22%, 6% for non-suicidal self-injury, and 6% for suicide attempt. In univariate modelling, socio-demographic and occupation-specific factors associated with the three outcomes included younger age (suicidal ideation and non-suicidal self-injury), not being in a relationship (suicide attempt) and working 35–44 h per week (suicidal ideation and suicide attempt). The mental health factors generalized anxiety disorder, depression, and suicide bereavement were significantly associated with increased risk of the three outcomes. In fully adjusted multivariable models, increasing severity of generalized anxiety disorder and depression were associated with an increased prevalence rate ratio of suicidal ideation, and a higher odds ratio of non-suicidal self-injury and suicide attempt. Conclusion: Suicidal ideation, non-suicidal self-injury and suicide attempt are significant issues for male construction workers that require specific attention. Findings highlight a need to support younger male construction workers and those bereaved by suicide. They also highlight the need for the early detection and treatment of generalized anxiety disorder and depression in order to intervene in, and potentially prevent, suicidality among male construction workers. Background: There is a paucity of data on the burden of heart failure (HF) in Central Australia, the most populous Indigenous region in the country. Aims: To characterize Indigenous and non‐Indigenous Australians with HF in Central Australia. Methods: Consecutive patients with HF and reduced ejection fraction <50% were included for the period 2019 to 2021. Clinical, echocardiographic and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) data were collected. Results: Four hundred twenty‐four patients with HF were included (70% Indigenous, 59% male; follow‐up 2.2 ± 0.5 years). Indigenous Australians were younger (53 ± 15 vs 68 ± 13 years, P < 0.001) with higher rates of rheumatic heart disease (18% vs 1%, P < 0.001), diabetes (63% vs 33%, P < 0.001) and severe chronic kidney disease (CKD; 32% vs 7%, P < 0.001). HF was more prevalent among Indigenous (138 [95% confidence interval (CI), 123–155] per 10 000) compared with non‐Indigenous Australians (53 [95% CI, 44–63] per 10 000), particularly among younger individuals and females. There were similar HF aetiologies between groups. Guideline‐directed medical therapy (GDMT) was suboptimal and similar between the groups: angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitor/angiotensin receptor blocker (64% vs 67%, P = 0.47) and β‐blockers (68% vs 71%, P = 0.47). Indigenous Australians had a significantly higher rate of MACE (54% vs 28%, P < 0.001) and death from any cause (24% vs 13%, P = 0.013). Conclusions: HF is more than two times as prevalent among Indigenous Central Australians, particularly among younger individuals and females. Despite similar HF aetiologies and GDMT, MACE and mortality outcomes are higher in Indigenous individuals with HF. Aim: To evaluate the effects of double (axillary and femoral) vs. single (axillary) cannulation on early outcomes of acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD). Materials & methods: Meta-analysis using PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane databases through August 23, 2023. Focused on operative mortality, postoperative stroke, re-exploration for bleeding, spinal cord injury, and renal replacement therapy. Results: Among 5 propensity score-matched studies with 2127 patients, double cannulation showed comparable mortality and higher rates of postoperative stroke (pooled odds ratio: 1.69, 95% confidence interval: 1.19–2.39) and need for renal replacement therapy (pooled odds ratio: 1.35, 95% confidence interval: 1.13–1.60) compared with single cannulation. Conclusion: Double arterial cannulation in ATAAD surgery is associated with increased postoperative stroke and renal replacement therapy than single cannulation. We studied the optimal way to maintain blood flow during surgery for acute aortic dissection. We focused on comparing the use of one tube placement site in the axillary artery with two sites, both in the axillary and femoral arteries, in five previous studies. Using two sites was associated with a higher risk of stroke and need for dialysis after surgery than using only one site. Adding a tube in the femoral artery for blood flow may increase the risk of complications. It appears that placing the tube only in the axillary artery may be a safer choice for appropriately selected patients having this surgery. Article highlights Background Acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) remains a formidable challenge with significant mortality and morbidity rates. Optimal perfusion strategy is one of the key components for successful ATAAD repair. Double arterial cannulation, which includes both axillary and femoral cannulation, has been used in various contexts for ATAAD repair to take advantage of each approach. However, conflicting results have been reported regarding the efficacy of double arterial vs. single axillary cannulation in ATAAD repair. Study design Conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the effect of double arterial vs. single axillary cannulation techniques. Identified 5 retrospective propensity score-matched studies from Asia with 2127 patients for analysis. Key findings Operative mortality was comparable between the two groups. Double cannulation was associated with higher postoperative stroke with a pooled odds ratio of 1.69 (95% confidence interval: 1.19–2.39). Double cannulation showed a higher rate of need for postoperative renal replacement therapy with a pooled odds ratio of 1.35 (95% confidence interval: 1.13–1.60). Implications for practice Unnecessary double arterial cannulation during ATAAD repair may lead to worse clinical outcomes, and surgeons should carefully consider the potential risks associated with double arterial cannulation. A need for individualized assessment to determine the most appropriate cannulation strategy for each patient.
