We use data from the ALMA Evolutionary Study of High Mass Protocluster Formation in the Galaxy (ALMAGAL) survey to study 100 ALMAGAL regions at $\sim$ 1 arsecond resolution located between $\sim$ 2 and 6 kpc distance. Using ALMAGAL $\sim$ 1.3mm line and continuum data we estimate flow rates onto individual cores. We focus specifically on flow rates along filamentary structures associated with these cores. Our primary analysis is centered around position velocity cuts in H$_2$CO (3$_{0,3}$ - 2$_{0,2}$) which allow us to measure the velocity fields, surrounding these cores. Combining this work with column density estimates we derive the flow rates along the extended filamentary structures associated with cores in these regions. We select a sample of 100 ALMAGAL regions covering four evolutionary stages from quiescent to protostellar, Young Stellar Objects (YSOs), and HII regions (25 each). Using dendrogram and line analysis, we identify a final sample of 182 cores in 87 regions. In this paper, we present 728 flow rates for our sample (4 per core), analysed in the context of evolutionary stage, distance from the core, and core mass. On average, for the whole sample, we derive flow rates on the order of $\sim$10$^{-4}$ M$_{sun}$yr$^{-1}$ with estimated uncertainties of $\pm$50%. We see increasing differences in the values among evolutionary stages, most notably between the less evolved (quiescent/protostellar) and more evolved (YSO/HII region) sources. We also see an increasing trend as we move further away from the centre of these cores. We also find a clear relationship between the flow rates and core masses $\sim$M$^{2/3}$ which is in line with the result expected from the tidal-lobe accretion mechanism. We present an analysis of the outer Galaxy giant molecular filament (GMF) G214.5-1.8 (G214.5) using IRAM 30m data of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O. We find that the $^{12}$CO (1-0) and (2-1) derived excitation temperatures are near identical and are very low, with a median of 8.2 K, showing that the gas is extremely cold across the whole cloud. Investigating the abundance of $^{13}$CO across G214.5, we find that there is a significantly lower abundance along the entire 13 pc spine of the filament, extending out to a radius of $\sim 0.8$ pc, corresponding to $A_v \gtrsim 2$ mag and $T_{dust} \lesssim 13.5$ K. Due to this, we attribute the decrease in abundance to CO freeze-out, making G214.5 the largest scale example of freeze-out yet. We construct an axisymmetric model of G214.5's $^{13}$CO volume density considering freeze-out and find that to reproduce the observed profile significant depletion is required beginning at low volume densities, $n\gtrsim2000$ cm$^{-3}$. Freeze-out at this low number density is possible only if the cosmic-ray ionisation rate is $\sim 1.9 \times 10^{-18}$ s$^{-1}$, an order of magnitude below the typical value. Using timescale arguments, we posit that such a low ionisation rate may lead to ambipolar diffusion being an important physical process along G214.5's entire spine. We suggest that if low cosmic-ray ionisation rates are more common in the outer Galaxy, and other quiescent regions, cloud-scale CO freeze-out occurring at low column and number densities may also be more prevalent, having consequences for CO observations and their interpretation., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS, 20 pages, 18 figures

To what extent magnetic fields affect how molecular clouds (MCs) fragment and create dense structures is an open question. We present a numerical study of cloud fragmentation using the SILCC-Zoom simulations. These simulations follow the self-consistent formation of MCs in a few hundred parsec sized region of a stratified galactic disc; and include magnetic fields, self-gravity, supernova-driven turbulence, as well as a non-equilibrium chemical network. To discern the role of magnetic fields in the evolution of MCs, we study seven simulated clouds, five with magnetic fields, and two without, with a maximum resolution of 0.1 parsec. Using a dendrogram we identify hierarchical structures which form within the clouds. Overall, the magnetised clouds have more mass in a diffuse envelope with a number density between 1-100 cm$^{-3}$. We find that six out of seven clouds are sheet-like on the largest scales, as also found in recent observations, and with filamentary structures embedded within, consistent with the bubble-driven MC formation mechanism. Hydrodynamic simulations tend to produce more sheet-like structures also on smaller scales, while the presence of magnetic fields promotes filament formation. Analysing cloud energetics, we find that magnetic fields are dynamically important for less dense, mostly but not exclusively atomic structures (typically up to $\sim 100 - 1000$~cm$^{-3}$), while the denser, potentially star-forming structures are energetically dominated by self-gravity and turbulence. In addition, we compute the magnetic surface term and demonstrate that it is generally confining, and some atomic structures are even magnetically held together. We present new $^{13}$CO(1-0), C$^{18}$O(1-0), HCO$^{+}$(1-0) and H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$(1-0) maps from the IRAM 30m telescope, and a spectrally-resolved [CII] 158 $\mu$m map observed with the SOFIA telescope towards the massive DR21 cloud. This traces the kinematics from low- to high-density gas in the cloud which allows to constrain the formation scenario of the high-mass star forming DR21 ridge. The molecular line data reveals that the sub-filaments are systematically redshifted relative to the dense ridge. We demonstrate that [CII] unveils the surrounding CO-poor gas of the dense filaments in the DR21 cloud. We also show that this surrounding gas is organized in a flattened cloud with curved redshifted dynamics perpendicular to the ridge. The sub-filaments thus form in this curved and flattened mass reservoir. A virial analysis of the different lines indicates that self-gravity should drive the evolution of the ridge and surrounding cloud. Combining all results we propose that bending of the magnetic field, due to the interaction with a mostly atomic colliding cloud, explains the velocity field and resulting mass accretion on the ridge. This is remarkably similar to what was found for at least two nearby low-mass filaments. We tentatively propose that this scenario might be a widespread mechanism to initiate star formation in the Milky Way. However, in contrast to low-mass clouds, gravitational collapse plays a role on the pc scale of the DR21 ridge because of the higher density. We present an analysis of the outer Galaxy giant molecular filament (GMF) G214.5-1.8 (G214.5) using Herschel data. We find that G214.5 has a mass of $\sim$ 16,000 M$_{\odot}$, yet hosts only 15 potentially protostellar 70 $\mu$m sources, making it highly quiescent compared to equally massive clouds such as Serpens and Mon R2. We show that G214.5 has a unique morphology, consisting of a narrow `Main filament' running north-south and a perpendicular `Head' structure running east-west. We identify 33 distinct massive clumps from the column density maps, 8 of which are protostellar. However, the star formation activity is not evenly spread across G214.5 but rather predominantly located in the Main filament. Studying the Main filament in a manner similar to previous works, we find that G214.5 is most like a 'Bone' candidate GMF, highly elongated and massive, but it is colder and narrower than any such GMF. It also differs significantly due to its low fraction of high column density gas. Studying the radial profile, we discover that G214.5 is highly asymmetric and resembles filaments which are known to be compressed externally. Considering its environment, we find that G214.5 is co-incident, spatially and kinematically, with a HI superbubble. We discuss how a potential interaction between G214.5 and the superbubble may explain G214.5's morphology, asymmetry and, paucity of dense gas and star formation activity, highlighting the intersection of a bubble-driven interstellar medium paradigm with that of a filament paradigm for star formation., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS. 26 pages, 24 figures

How molecular clouds fragment and create the dense structures which go on to form stars is an open question. We investigate the relative importance of different energy terms (kinetic, thermal, magnetic, and gravity - both self-gravity and tidal forces) for the formation and evolution of molecular clouds and their sub-structures based on the SILCC-Zoom simulations. These simulations follow the self-consistent formation of cold molecular clouds down to scales of 0.1 pc from the diffuse supernova-driven interstellar medium in a stratified galactic disc. We study the time evolution of seven molecular clouds (five with magnetic fields and two without) for 1.5-2 Myr. Using a dendrogram, we identify hierarchical 3D sub-structures inside the clouds with the aim to understand their dynamics and distinguish between the theories of gravo-turbulent fragmentation and global hierarchical collapse. The virial analysis shows that the dense gas is indeed dominated by the interplay of gravity and turbulence, while magnetic fields and thermal pressure are only important for fluffy, atomic structures. Over time, gravitationally bound sub-structures emerge from a marginally bound medium (viral ratio $1 \leq \alpha_{\rm vir}^{\rm vol} <2$) as a result of large-scale supernova-driven inflows rather than global collapse. A detailed tidal analysis shows that the tidal tensor is highly anisotropic. Yet the tidal forces are generally not strong enough to disrupt either large-scale or dense sub-structures but cause their deformation. By comparing tidal and crossing time scales, we find that tidal forces do not seem to be the main driver of turbulence within the molecular clouds., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, submitted to MNRAS

During the early phases of low-mass star formation, episodic accretion causes the ejection of high-velocity outflow bullets, which carry a fossil record of the driving protostar's accretion history. We present 44 SPH simulations of $1\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ cores, covering a wide range of initial conditions, and follow the cores for five free-fall times. Individual protostars are represented by sink particles, and the sink particles launch episodic outflows using a subgrid model. The Optics algorithm is used to identify individual episodic bullets within the outflows. The parameters of the overall outflow and the individual bullets are then used to estimate the age and energetics of the outflow, and the accretion events that triggered it; and to evaluate how reliable these estimates are, if observational uncertainties and selection effects (like inclination) are neglected. Of the commonly used methods for estimating outflow ages, it appears that those based on the length and speed of advance of the lobe are the most reliable in the early phases of evolution, and those based on the width of the outflow cavity and the speed of advance are most reliable during the later phases. We describe a new method that is almost as accurate as these methods, and reliable throughout the evolution. In addition we show how the accretion history of the protostar can be accurately reconstructed from the dynamics of the bullets if each lobe contains at least two bullets. Context. Dense molecular filaments are ubiquituous in the interstellar medium, yet their internal physical conditions and formation mechanism remain debated. Aims. We study the kinematics and physical conditions in the Musca filament and the Chamaeleon-Musca complex to constrain the physics of filament formation. Methods. We produced CO(2-1) isotopologue maps with the APEX telescope that cut through the Musca filament. We further study a NANTEN2 $^{12}$CO(1-0) map of the Musca cloud and the HI emission of the Chamaeleon-Musca complex. Results. The Musca cloud contains multiple velocity components. Radiative transfer modelling of the CO emission indicates that the Musca filament consists of a cold ($\sim$10 K), dense (n$_{H_2}\sim$10$^4$ cm$^{-3}$) crest, which is best described with a cylindrical geometry. Connected to the crest, a separate gas component at T$\sim$15 K and n$_{H_2}\sim$10$^3$ cm$^{-3}$ is found, the so-called strands. The filament crest has a transverse velocity gradient that is linked to the kinematics of the nearby ambient cloud. Studying the large scale kinematics, we find coherence of the asymmetric kinematics from the 50 pc HI cloud down to the Musca filament. We also report a strong [C$^{18}$O]/[$^{13}$CO] abundance drop by an order of magnitude from the filament crest to the strands over a distance $<$ 0.2 pc in a weak far-ultraviolet (FUV) field. Conclusions. The dense Musca filament crest is a long-lived (several crossing times), dynamic structure that can form stars in the near future because of continuous mass accretion. This mass accretion appears to be triggered by a HI cloud-cloud collision, which bends the magnetic field around dense filaments. This bending of the magnetic field is then responsible for the observed asymmetric accretion scenario of the Musca filament, which is, for instance, seen as a V-shape in the position-velocity (PV) diagram., Comment: 24 pages, 26 figures

In this work, Rossi-alpha measurements were simultaneously performed with a $^3$He-based detection system and an organic scintillator-based detection system. The assembly is 15 kg of plutonium (93 wt$\%$ $^{239}$Pu) reflected by copper and moderated by lead. The goal of Rossi-alpha measurements is to estimate the prompt neutron decay constant, alpha. Simulations estimate $k_\text{eff}$ = 0.624 and $\alpha$ = 52.3 $\pm$ 2.5 ns for the measured assembly. The organic scintillator system estimated $\alpha$ = 47.4 $\pm$ 2.0 ns, having a 9.37$\%$ error (though the 1.09 standard deviation confidence intervals overlapped). The $^3$He system estimated $\alpha$ = 37 $\mu$s. The known slowing down time of the $^3$He system is 35-40 $\mu$s, which means the slowing down time dominates and obscures the prompt neutron decay constant. The accretion of material onto young protostars is accompanied by the launching of outflows. Observations show that accretion, and therefore also outflows, are episodic. However, the effects of episodic outflow feedback on the core-scale are not well understood. We have performed 88 Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic simulations of turbulent dense $1 \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ cores, to study the influence of episodic outflow feedback on the stellar multiplicity and the star formation efficiency (SFE). Protostars are represented by sink particles, which use a sub-grid model to capture stellar evolution, inner-disc evolution, episodic accretion and the launching of outflows. By comparing simulations with and without episodic outflow feedback, we show that simulations with outflow feedback reproduce the binary statistics of young stellar populations, including the relative proportions of singles, binaries, triples, etc. and the high incidence of twin binaries with $q\geq 0.95$; simulations without outflow feedback do not. Entrainment factors (the ratio between total outflowing mass and initially ejected mass) are typically $\sim 7\pm 2$, but can be much higher if the total mass of stars formed in a core is low and/or outflow episodes are infrequent. Observations with the Herschel Space Telescope have established that most of the star forming gas is organised in interstellar filaments, a finding that is supported by numerical simulations of the supersonic interstellar medium (ISM) where dense filamentary structures are ubiquitous. We aim to understand the formation of these dense structures by performing observations covering the $^{12}$CO(4-3), $^{12}$CO(3-2), and various CO(2-1) isotopologue lines of the Musca filament, using the APEX telescope. The observed CO intensities and line ratios cannot be explained by PDR (photodissociation region) emission because of the low ambient far-UV field that is strongly constrained by the non-detections of the [C II] line at 158 $\mu$m and the [O I] line at 63 $\mu$m, observed with the upGREAT receiver on SOFIA, as well as a weak [C I] 609 $\mu$m line detected with APEX. We propose that the observations are consistent with a scenario in which shock excitation gives rise to warm and dense gas close to the highest column density regions in the Musca filament. Using shock models, we find that the CO observations can be consistent with excitation by J-type low-velocity shocks. A qualitative comparison of the observed CO spectra with synthetic observations of dynamic filament formation simulations shows a good agreement with the signature of a filament accretion shock that forms a cold and dense filament from a converging flow. The Musca filament is thus found to be dense molecular post-shock gas. Filament accretion shocks that dissipate the supersonic kinetic energy of converging flows in the ISM may thus play a prominent role in the evolution of cold and dense filamentary structures., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures

Recent observations have revealed the presence of small fibres or sub-filaments within larger filaments. We present a numerical fragmentation study of fibrous filaments investigating the link between cores and sub-filaments using hydrodynamical simulations performed with the moving-mesh code Arepo. Our study suggests that cores form in two environments: (i) as isolated cores, or small chains of cores, on a single sub-filament, or (ii) as an ensemble of cores located at the junction of sub-filaments. We term these isolated and hub cores respectively. We show that these core populations are statistically different from each other. Hub cores have a greater mean mass than isolated cores, and the mass distribution of hub cores is significantly wider than isolated cores. This fragmentation is reminiscent of parsec-scale hub-filament systems, showing that the combination of turbulence and gravity leads to similar fragmentation signatures on multiple scales, even within filaments. Moreover, the fact that fragmentation proceeds through sub-filaments suggests that there exists no characteristic fragmentation length-scale between cores. This is in opposition to earlier theoretical works studying fibre-less filaments which suggest a strong tendency towards the formation of quasi-periodically spaced cores, but in better agreement with observations. We have analysed the Herschel and SCUBA-2 dust continuum observations of the main filament in the Taurus L1495 star forming region, using the Bayesian fitting procedure PPMAP. (i) If we construct an average profile along the whole length of the filament, it has fwhm $\simeq 0.087\pm 0.003\,{\rm pc};\;$, but the closeness to previous estimates is coincidental. (ii) If we analyse small local sections of the filament, the column-density profile approximates well to the form predicted for hydrostatic equilibrium of an isothermal cylinder. (iii) The ability of PPMAP to distinguish dust emitting at different temperatures, and thereby to discriminate between the warm outer layers of the filament and the cold inner layers near the spine, leads to a significant reduction in the surface-density, $\varSigma$, and hence in the line-density, $\mu$. If we adopt the canonical value for the critical line-density at a gas-kinetic temperature of $10\,{\rm K}$, $\mu_{_{\rm CRIT}}\simeq 16\,{\rm M_{_\odot}\,pc^{-1}}$, the filament is on average trans-critical, with ${\bar\mu}\sim \mu_{_{\rm CRIT}};\;$ local sections where $\mu >\mu_{_{\rm CRIT}}$ tend to lie close to pre-stellar cores. (iv) The ability of PPMAP to distinguish different types of dust, i.e. dust characterised by different values of the emissivity index, $\beta$, reveals that the dust in the filament has a lower emissivity index, $\beta\leq1.5$, than the dust outside the filament, $\beta\geq 1.7$, implying that the physical conditions in the filament have effected a change in the properties of the dust., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication by MNRAS August 2019

Theories suggest that filament fragmentation should occur on a characteristic fragmentation length-scale. This fragmentation length-scale can be related to filament properties, such as the width and the dynamical state of the filament. Here we present a study of a number of fragmentation analysis techniques applied to filaments, and their sensitivity to characteristic fragmentation length-scales. We test the sensitivity to both single-tier and two-tier fragmentation, i.e. when the fragmentation can be characterised with one or two fragmentation length-scales respectively. The nearest neighbour separation, minimum spanning tree separation and two-point correlation function are all able to robustly detect characteristic fragmentation length-scales. The Fourier power spectrum and the Nth nearest neighbour technique are both poor techniques, and require very little scatter in the core spacings for the characteristic length-scale to be successfully determined. We develop a null hypothesis test to compare the results of the nearest neighbour and minimum spanning tree separation distribution with randomly placed cores. We show that a larger number of cores is necessary to successfully reject the null hypothesis if the underlying fragmentation is two-tier, N>20. Once the null is rejected we show how one may decide if the observed fragmentation is best described by single-tier or two-tier fragmentation, using either Akaike's information criterion or the Bayes factor. We present an initial overview of the filamentary structure in the Orion A molecular cloud utilizing a high angular and velocity resolution C$^{18}$O(1-0) emission map that was recently produced as part of the CARMA-NRO Orion Survey. The main goal of this study is to build a credible method to study varying widths of filaments which has previously been linked to star formation in molecular clouds. Due to the diverse star forming activities taking place throughout its $\sim$20 pc length, together with its proximity of 388 pc, the Orion A molecular cloud provides an excellent laboratory for such an experiment to be carried out with high resolution and high sensitivity. Using the widely-known structure identification algorithm, DisPerSE, on a 3-dimensional (PPV) C$^{18}$O cube, we identified 625 relatively short (the longest being 1.74 pc) filaments over the entire cloud. We study the distribution of filament widths using FilChaP, a python package that we have developed and made publicly available. We find that the filaments identified in a 2 square degree PPV cube do not overlap spatially, except for the complex OMC-4 region that shows distinct velocity components along the line of sight. The filament widths vary between 0.02 and 0.3 pc depending on the amount of substructure that a filament possesses. The more substructure a filament has, the larger is its width. We also find that despite this variation, the filament width shows no anticorrelation with the central column density which is in agreement with previous Herschel observations., Comment: 19 pages, 20 figures. The formation of molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) and carbon monoxide (CO) is sensitive to the volume and column density distribution of the turbulent interstellar medium. In this paper, we study H$_2$ and CO formation in a large set of hydrodynamical simulations of periodic boxes with driven supersonic turbulence, as well as in colliding flows with the \textsc{Flash} code. The simulations include a non-equilibrium chemistry network, gas self-gravity, and diffuse radiative transfer. We investigate the spatial resolution required to obtain a converged H$_2$ and CO mass fraction and formation history. From the numerical tests we find that H$_2$ converges at a spatial resolution of $\lesssim0.2$~pc, while the required resolution for CO convergence is $\lesssim 0.04$~pc in gas with solar metallicity which is subject to a solar neighbourhood interstellar radiation field. We derive two critical conditions from our numerical results: the simulation has to at least resolve the densities at which (1) the molecule formation time in each cell in the computational domain is equal to the dissociation time, and (2) the formation time is equal to the the typical cell crossing time. For both H$_2$ and CO, the second criterion is more restrictive. Background: Spontaneous fission events emit prompt neutrons correlated with one another in emission angle and energy. Purpose: We explore the relationship in energy and angle between correlated prompt neutrons emitted from 252Cf spontaneous fission. Methods: Measurements with the Chi-Nu array provide experimental data for coincident neutrons tagged with a fission chamber signal with 10 degree angular resolution and 1 ns timing resolution for time-of-flight energy calculations. The experimental results are compared to simulations produced by the fission event generators CGMF, FREYA, and MCNPX-POLIMI IPOL(1)=1. Results: We find that the measurements and the simulations all exhibit anisotropic neutron emission, though differences exist between fission event generators. Conclusions: This work shows that the dependence of detected neutron energy on the energy of a neutron detected in coincidence, although weak, is non-negligible, indicating that there may be correlations in energy between two neutrons emitted in the same fission event.

Young low-mass protostars undergo short phases of high accretion and outburst activity leading to lumpy outflows. Recent observations have shown that the position-velocity and mass-velocity diagrams of such outflows exhibit individual bullet-like features; some of these bullets subscribe to a `Hubble Law' velocity relation, and others are manifest as `Hubble wedges'. In order to explore the origin of these features, we have developed a new episodic outflow model for the SPH code {\sc gandalf}, which mimics the accretion and ejection behaviour of FU Ori type stars. We apply this model to simulations of star formation, invoking two types of initial conditions: spherically symmetric cores in solid-body rotation with $\rho\propto r^{-2}$, and spherically symmetric turbulent cores with density proportional to the density of a Bonnor-Ebert sphere. For a wide range of model parameters, we find that episodic outflows lead to self-regulation of the ejected mass and momentum, and we achieve acceptable results, even with relatively low resolution. Using this model, we find that recently ejected outflow bullets produce a `Hubble wedge' in the position-velocity relation. However, once such a bullet hits the leading shock front, it decelerates and aligns with older bullets to form a `Hubble-law'. The C$^{+}$ ion is an important coolant of interstellar gas, and so the [CII] fine structure line is frequently observed in the interstellar medium. However, the physical and chemical properties of the [CII]-emitting gas are still unclear. We carry out non-LTE radiative transfer simulations with RADMC-3D to study the [CII] line emission from a young, turbulent molecular cloud before the onset of star formation, using data from the SILCC-Zoom project. The [CII] emission is optically thick over 40% of the observable area with $I_{[\textrm{CII}]} > 0.5$ K km s$^{-1}$. To determine the physical properties of the [CII] emitting gas, we treat the [CII] emission as optically thin. We find that the [CII] emission originates primarily from cold, moderate density gas ($40 \lesssim T \lesssim 65$ K and $50 \lesssim n \lesssim 440$ cm$^{-3}$), composed mainly of atomic hydrogen and with an effective visual extinction between $\sim 0.50$ and $\sim 0.91$. Gas dominated by molecular hydrogen contributes only $\lesssim$20% of the total [CII] line emission. Thus, [CII] is not a good tracer for CO-dark H$_2$ at this early phase in the cloud's lifetime. We also find that the total gas, H and C$^+$ column densities are all correlated with the integrated [CII] line emission, with power law slopes ranging from 0.5 to 0.7. Further, the median ratio between the total column density and the [CII] line emission is $Y_{{\rm CII}}\approx 1.1 \times 10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$ (K km s$^{-1}$)$^{-1}$, and $Y_{{\rm CII}}$ scales with $I_{[\textrm{CII}]}^{-0.3}$. Molecular-line observations of filaments in star-forming regions have revealed the existence of elongated coherent features within the filaments; these features are termed fibres. Here we caution that, since fibres are traced in PPV space, there is no guarantee that they represent coherent features in PPP space. We illustrate this contention using simulations of the growth of a filament from a turbulent medium. Synthetic C$^{18}$O observations of the simulated filaments reveal the existence of fibres very similar to the observed ones, i.e. elongated coherent features in the resulting PPV data-cubes. Analysis of the PPP data-cubes (i.e. 3D density fields) also reveals elongated coherent features, which we term sub-filaments. Unfortunately there is very poor correspondence between the fibres and the sub-filaments in the simulations. Both fibres and sub-filaments derive from inhomogeneities in the turbulent accretion flow onto the main filament. As a consequence, fibres are often affected by line-of-sight confusion. Similarly, sub-filaments are often affected by large velocity gradients, and even velocity discontinuities. These results suggest that extreme care should be taken when using velocity coherent features to constrain the underlying substructure within a filament., Comment: 15 pages + appendices, 26 figures. Large scale surveys have brought about a revolution in astronomy. To analyse the resulting wealth of data, we need automated tools to identify, classify, and quantify the important underlying structures. We present here a method for classifying and quantifying a pixelated structure, based on its principal moments of inertia. The method enables us to automatically detect, and objectively compare, centrally condensed cores, elongated filaments and hollow rings. We illustrate the method by applying it to (i) observations of surface-density from Hi-GAL, and (ii) simulations of filament growth in a turbulent medium. Detailed information on the fission process can be inferred from the observation, modeling and theoretical understanding of prompt fission neutron and $\gamma$-ray~observables. Beyond simple average quantities, the study of distributions and correlations in prompt data, e.g., multiplicity-dependent neutron and \gray~spectra, angular distributions of the emitted particles, $n$-$n$, $n$-$\gamma$, and $\gamma$-$\gamma$~correlations, can place stringent constraints on fission models and parameters that would otherwise be free to be tuned separately to represent individual fission observables. The FREYA~and CGMF~codes have been developed to follow the sequential emissions of prompt neutrons and $\gamma$-rays~from the initial excited fission fragments produced right after scission. Both codes implement Monte Carlo techniques to sample initial fission fragment configurations in mass, charge and kinetic energy and sample probabilities of neutron and $\gamma$~emission at each stage of the decay. This approach naturally leads to using simple but powerful statistical techniques to infer distributions and correlations among many observables and model parameters. The comparison of model calculations with experimental data provides a rich arena for testing various nuclear physics models such as those related to the nuclear structure and level densities of neutron-rich nuclei, the $\gamma$-ray~strength functions of dipole and quadrupole transitions, the mechanism for dividing the excitation energy between the two nascent fragments near scission, and the mechanisms behind the production of angular momentum in the fragments, etc. Beyond the obvious interest from a fundamental physics point of view, such studies are also important for addressing data needs in various nuclear applications. We present the results of smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations investigating the evolution and fragmentation of filaments that are accreting from a turbulent medium. We show that the presence of turbulence, and the resulting inhomogeneities in the accretion flow, play a significant role in the fragmentation process. Filaments which experience a weakly turbulent accretion flow fragment in a two-tier hierarchical fashion, similar to the fragmentation pattern seen in the Orion Integral Shaped Filament. Increasing the energy in the turbulent velocity field results in more sub-structure within the filaments, and one sees a shift from gravity-dominated fragmentation to turbulence-dominated fragmentation. The sub-structure formed in the filaments is elongated and roughly parallel to the longitudinal axis of the filament, similar to the fibres seen in observations of Taurus, and suggests that the fray and fragment scenario is a possible mechanism for the production of fibres. We show that the formation of these fibre-like structures is linked to the vorticity of the velocity field inside the filament and the filament's accretion from an inhomogeneous medium. Moreover, we find that accretion is able to drive and sustain roughly sonic levels of turbulence inside the filaments, but is not able to prevent radial collapse once the filaments become supercritical. However, the supercritical filaments which contain fibre-like structures do not collapse radially, suggesting that fibrous filaments may not necessarily become radially unstable once they reach the critical line-density., Comment: (Accepted for publication in MNRAS)
