Search

We report on the X-ray spectral and spatial evolution of the Symbiotic star R Aqr. Through a multi-epoch observational campaign performed with Chandra between 2017 and 2022, we study the X-ray emission of this binary system, composed of an evolved red giant star and a white dwarf (WD). This analysis is particularly timely as the WD approached the periastron in late 2018/early 2019, thus mass transfer, jet emission and outburst phenomena are to be expected. Through detailed spectral analysis, we detect a significant rise in the soft X-ray (0.5-2 keV) emission of R Aqr, likely linked to jet emission, followed by a decay towards the previous quiescent state. The hard X-ray emission (5-8 keV), is not immediately affected by the periastron passage; the hard component, after maintaining the same flux level between 2017 and 2021, rapidly decays after 2022. Possible explanations for this are a change in the reflection properties of the medium surrounding the binary, obscuration of the central region by material ejected during the periastron passage, or even the partial/complete destruction of the inner regions of the accretion disc surrounding the WD. In addition to this activity in the central region, extended emission is also detected, likely linked to a hot spot in a pre-outburst-emitted jet, which can be observed moving away from the system's central region., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. Using a subsample of the Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamical Evolution (BAaDE) survey of stellar SiO masers, we explore the prevalence and characteristics of $^{28}$SiO $J=1-0, v=0$ emission. We identify 90 detections of maser, thermal, or composite $^{28}$SiO $J=1-0, v=0$ emission out of approximately 13,000 candidate spectra from the NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). We find that the detected sources are likely asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars belonging to a bright, foreground Milky Way stellar disk population. For the 32 sources showing thermal components, we extract values for outflow velocity by fitting thermal line profiles. We find a range of circumstellar envelope expansion velocities, and compare to previously recorded OH and CO expansion velocities. This preliminary survey is already the largest study of stellar ground-vibrational-state SiO masers to date, and will be expanded to include the entire VLA BAaDE dataset when data reduction for the 18,988 target sources is completed., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures

We present the first results from the BAaDE (Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamic Evolution) survey. Though only a subset of the complete survey ($\sim$2700 out of $\sim$20000 final sources), our data comprise the largest radio kinematic survey to date of stellar SiO masers observed toward the Galactic bulge and plane from $-15^\circ < l < +12^\circ$ and $-6^\circ < b < +6^\circ$. Our sources include a substantial number of line-of-sight (LoS) velocities in high extinction regions within $\pm 1^\circ$ of the Galactic plane. When matched with 2MASS photometry, our radio-detected sample lies significantly brighter than and red-ward of the first red giant branch tip, reaching extremes of $(J-Ks)_0 > 8$, colors consistent with Mira variables and mass losing AGB stars. We see a clean division into two kinematic populations: a kinematically cold ($\sigma \sim 50\rm\ km\ sec^{-1}$) population that we propose is in the foreground disk, consisting of giants with 2MASS $Ks<5.5$, and a kinematically hot ($\sigma \sim 100\rm\ km\ sec^{-1}$) candidate bulge/bar population for most giants with $Ks>5.5$. Only the kinematically hot giants with $Ks>5.5$ include the reddest stars. Adopting 8.3 kpc to the Galactic Center, and correcting for foreground extinction, we find that most of the sources have $M_{bol} \sim -5$, consistent with their being luminous, and possibly intermediate age, AGB stars. Binarity is believed to dramatically affect the history and geometry of mass loss in AGB and post-AGB stars, but observational evidence of binarity is sorely lacking. As part of a project to search for hot binary companions to cool AGB stars using the GALEX archive, we discovered a late-M star, Y Gem, to be a source of strong and variable UV and X-ray emission. Here we report UV spectroscopic observations of Y Gem obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope that show strong flickering in the UV continuum on time-scales of <~20 s, characteristic of an active accretion disk. Several UV lines with P-Cygni-type profiles from species such as Si IV and C IV are also observed, with emission and absorption features that are red- and blue- shifted by velocities of ~500 km/s from the systemic velocity. Our model for these (and previous) observations is that material from the primary star is gravitationally captured by a companion, producing a hot accretion disk. The latter powers a fast outflow that produces blue-shifted features due to absorption of UV continuum emitted by the disk, whereas the red-shifted emission features arise in heated infalling material from the primary. The outflow velocities support a previous inference by Sahai et al. (2015) that Y Gem's companion is a low-mass main-sequence star. Blackbody fitting of the UV continuum implies an accretion luminosity of about 13 Lsun and thus a mass-accretion rate >5e-7 Msun/yr; we infer that Roche lobe overflow is the most likely binary accretion mode for Y Gem.

IRAS 16293-2422 is a very well studied young stellar system seen in projection towards the L1689N cloud in the Ophiuchus complex. However, its distance is still uncertain with a range of values from 120 pc to 180 pc. Our goal is to measure the trigonometric parallax of this young star by means of H$_2$O maser emission. We use archival data from 15 epochs of VLBA observations of the 22.2 GHz water maser line. By modeling the displacement on the sky of the H$_2$O maser spots, we derived a trigonometric parallax of $7.1\pm1.3$ mas, corresponding to a distance of $141_{-21}^{+30}$ pc. This new distance is in good agreement with recent values obtained for other magnetically active young stars in the L1689 cloud. We relate the kinematics of these masers with the outflows and the recent ejections powered by source A in the system., Comment: 14 pages, 6 tables, 8 figures. We present new Effelsberg-100 m, ATCA, and VLA observations of rotational SiS transitions in the circumstellar envelope (CSE) of IRC +10216. Thanks to the high angular resolution achieved by the ATCA observations, we unambiguously confirm that the molecule's J=1-0 transition exhibits maser action in this CSE, as first suggested more than thirty years ago. The maser emission's radial velocity peaking at a local standard of rest velocity of -39.862$\pm$0.065 km/s indicates that it arises from an almost fully accelerated shell. Monitoring observations show time variability of the SiS (1-0) maser. The two lowest-$J$ SiS quasi-thermal emission lines trace a much more extended emitting region than previous high-J SiS observations. Their distributions show that the SiS quasi-thermal emission consists of two components: one is very compact (radius<1.5", corresponding to <3$\times 10^{15}$ cm), and the other extends out to a radius >11". An incomplete shell-like structure is found in the north-east, which is indicative of existing SiS shells. Clumpy structures are also revealed in this CSE. The gain of the SiS (1-0) maser (optical depths of about -5 at the blue-shifted side and, assuming inversion throughout the entire line's velocity range, about -2 at the red-shifted side) suggests that it is unsaturated. The SiS (1-0) maser can be explained in terms of ro-vibrational excitation caused by infrared pumping, and we propose that infrared continuum emission is the main pumping source., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. We present a high sensitivity radio continuum survey at 6 and 1.3$\,$cm using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array towards a sample of 58 high-mass star forming regions. Our sample was chosen from dust clumps within infrared dark clouds with and without IR sources (CMC-IRs, CMCs, respectively), and hot molecular cores (HMCs), with no previous, or relatively weak radio continuum detection at the $1\,$mJy level. Due to the improvement in the continuum sensitivity of the VLA, this survey achieved map rms levels of $\sim$ 3-10 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ at sub-arcsecond angular resolution. We extracted 70 centimeter continuum sources associated with 1.2$\,$mm dust clumps. Most sources are weak, compact, and are prime candidates for high-mass protostars. Detection rates of radio sources associated with the mm dust clumps for CMCs, CMC-IRs and HMCs are 6$\%$, 53$\%$ and 100$\%$, respectively. This result is consistent with increasing high-mass star formation activity from CMCs to HMCs. The radio sources located within HMCs and CMC-IRs occur close to the dust clump centers with a median offset from it of 12,000$\,$AU and 4,000$\,$AU, respectively. We calculated 5 - 25$\,$GHz spectral indices using power law fits and obtain a median value of 0.5 (i.e., flux increasing with frequency), suggestive of thermal emission from ionized jets. We have used the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to search for 36 GHz and 44 GHz methanol (CH3OH) lines in a sample of 21 Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs). Mainly the regions of the SNRs with 1720 MHz OH masers were observed. Despite the limited spatial extent covered in our search, methanol masers were detected in both G1.4-0.1 and W28. Additional masers were found in SgrAEast. More than 40 masers were found in G1.4-0.1 which we deduce are due to interactions between the SNR and at least two separate molecular clouds. The six masers in W28 are associated with the molecular cloud that is also associated with the OH maser excitation. We discuss the possibility that the methanol maser may be more numerous in SNRs than the OH maser, but harder to detect due to observational constraints., Comment: 9 pages

We report on the discovery of compact, narrow OH line emission from the hydroxl molecule at 1720 MHz toward the extended TeV source J1834-087. The origin of this high energy emission is unknown; it could be powered by one or more candidate neutron stars (leptonic) or by cosmic rays interacting with dense gas (hadronic). The OH emission is detected near the center of J1834-087, coincident with the radio continuum of the supernova remnant W41, and the radial velocity of the line is the same velocity as a giant molecular cloud along the line of sight. We argue that the OH is maser emission stimulated by the interaction of the W41 shock with the molecular cloud. The known correlation between gamma-ray bright supernova remnants and OH masers favors a hadronic interpretation for this high energy emission., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. ApJ Letters, submitted

We present a comprehensive view of the W51B HII region complex and the W51C supernova remnant (SNR) using new radio observations from the VLA, VLBA, MERLIN, JCMT, and CSO along with archival data from Spitzer, ROSAT, ASCA, and Chandra. Our VLA data include the first 400 cm (74 MHz) continuum image of W51 at high resolution (88 arcsec). The 400 cm image shows non-thermal emission surrounding the G49.2-0.3 HII region, and a compact source of non-thermal emission (W51B_NT) coincident with the previously-identified OH (1720 MHz) maser spots, non-thermal 21 and 90 cm emission, and a hard X-ray source. W51B_NT falls within the region of high likelihood for the position of TeV gamma-ray emission. Using the VLBA three OH (1720 MHz) maser spots are detected in the vicinity of W51B_NT with sizes of 60 to 300 AU and Zeeman effect magnetic field strengths of 1.5 to 2.2 mG. The multiwavelength data demonstrate that the northern end of the W51B HII region complex has been partly enveloped by the advancing W51C SNR and this interaction explains the presence of W51B_NT and the OH masers. This interaction also appears in the thermal molecular gas which partially encircles W51B_NT and exhibits narrow pre-shock (DeltaV 5 km/s) and broad post-shock (DeltaV 20 km/s) velocity components. RADEX radiative transfer modeling of these two components yield physical conditions consistent with the passage of a non-dissociative C-type shock. Confirmation of the W51B/W51C interaction provides additional evidence in favor of this region being one of the best candidates for hadronic particle acceleration known thus far., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

Very Large Array observations of the extreme carbon star IRC+10216 at 7 mm wavelength with 40 milli-arcsecond resolution resolve the object's radio emission, which forms an almost round uniform disk of 83 milli arcseconds diameter, corresponding to 11 AU (for an assumed distance of 130 pc). We find a brightness temperature of 1630 K for the radio photosphere. Since the emission is optically thick, we can directly estimate IRC+10216's average luminosity, which is 8600 L(Sun). This value is in excellent agreement with what is predicted from the period-luminosity relation for carbon-rich Miras. Assuming an effective temperature of 2750 K for IRC+10216, it implies an optical photospheric diameter of 3.8 AU. Our precise determination of IRC+10216's proper motion fits the picture presented by far-ultraviolet and far-infrared wavelength observations of its interaction region with the interstellar medium (its "astrosphere"): the star moves roughly in the direction expected from the morphology of the termination shock and its astrotail structures. Calculation of its three dimensional velocity and an analysis of the kinematics of its surrounding interstellar medium (ISM) suggest an appreciable relative velocity of 42 km s/s, which is about half the value discussed in recent studies. This suggests a lower (time-averaged) mass loss rate and/or a higher ISM density than previously assumed., Comment: 9 pages incl. 2 appendices, 4+2 figures

We report multi-wavelength observations of the far-infrared source IRAS 20324+4057, including high-resolution optical imaging with HST, and ground-based near-infrared, millimeter-wave and radio observations. These data show an extended, limb-brightened, tadpole-shaped nebula with a bright, compact, cometary nebula located inside the tadpole head. Our molecular line observations indicate that the Tadpole is predominantly molecular, with a total gas mass exceeding 3.7 Msun. Our radio continuum imaging, and archival Spitzer IRAC images, show the presence of additional tadpole-shaped objects in the vicinity of IRAS 20324+4057 that share a common E-W head-tail orientation: we propose that these structures are small, dense molecular cores that originated in the Cygnus cloud and are now being (i) photoevaporated by the ultraviolet radiation field of the Cyg OB2 No. 8 cluster located to the North-West, and (ii) shaped by ram pressure of a distant wind source or sources located to the West, blowing ablated and photoevaporated material from their heads eastwards. The ripples in the tail of the Tadpole are interpreted in terms of instabilities at the interface between the ambient wind and the dense medium of the former., Comment: (accepted by the Astrophysical Journal)

We report on a pilot imaging line survey (36.0 - 37.0 GHz, with ~1 km/s spectral channels) with the Expanded Very Large Array for two asymptotic giant branch stars, RW LMi (= CIT6, which has a carbon-rich circumstellar envelope) and IK Tau (= NML Tau, with an oxygen-rich circumstellar envelope). Radio continuum emission consistent with photospheric emission was detected from both stars. From RW LMi we imaged the HC3N (J = 4 -> 3) emission. The images show several partial rings of emission; these multiple shells trace the evolution of the CSE from 400 to 1200 years. SiS (J = 2 -> 1) emission was detected from both RW LMi and IK Tau. For both stars the SiS emission is centrally condensed with the peak line emission coincident with the stellar radio continuum emission. We report the results of a pilot multiwavelength survey in the radio continuum (X, Ka and Q bands, i.e., from 3.6 cm to 7 mm) carried out with the EVLA in order to confirm the presence of very large dust grains in dusty disks and torii around the central stars in a small sample of post-AGB objects, as inferred from millimeter and sub-millimeter observations. Supporting mm-wave observations were also obtained with CARMA towards three of our sources. Our EVLA survey has resulted in a robust detection of our most prominent submm emission source, the pre-planetary nebula IRAS 22036+5306, in all three bands, and the disk-prominent post-AGB object, RV Tau, in one band. The observed fluxes are consistent with optically-thin free-free emission, and since they are insignificant compared to their submm/mm fluxes, we conclude that the latter must come from substantial masses of cool, large (mm-sized) grains. We find that the power-law emissivity in the cm-to-submm range for the large grains in IRAS22036 is nu^{beta}, with beta=1-1.3. Furthermore, the value of beta in the 3 to 0.85 mm range for the three disk-prominent post-AGB sources (beta < or = 0.4) is significantly lower than that of IRAS22036, suggesting that the grains in post-AGB objects with circumbinary disks are likely larger than those in the dusty waists of pre-planetary nebulae., Comment: accepted for special Astrophysical Journal (Letters) EVKA issue

We report on the results of two epochs of Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of the 22 GHz water masers toward IRAS 19190+1102. The water maser emission from this object shows two main arc-shaped formations perpendicular to their NE-SW separation axis. The arcs are separated by ~280 mas in position, and are expanding outwards at an angular rate of 2.35 mas/yr. We detect maser emission at velocities between -53.3 km/s to +78.0 km/s and there is a distinct velocity pattern where the NE masers are blueshifted and the SW masers are redshifted. The outflow has a three-dimensional outflow velocity of 99.8 km/s and a dynamical age of about 59 yr. A group of blueshifted masers not located along the arcs shows a change in velocity of more than 35 km/s between epochs, and may be indicative of the formation of a new lobe. These observations show that IRAS 19190+1102 is a member of the class of "water fountain"' pre-planetary nebulae displaying bipolar structure, Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, corrected typos

We have used the VLBA to measure the annual parallax of the H2O masers in the star-forming region IRAS 00420+5530. This measurement yields a direct distance estimate of 2.17 +/- 0.05 kpc (<3%), which disagrees substantially with the standard kinematic distance estimate of ~4.6 kpc (according to the rotation curve of Brand and Blitz 1993), as well as most of the broad range of distances (1.7-7.7 kpc) used in various astrophysical analyses in the literature. The 3-dimensional space velocity of IRAS 00420+5530 at this new, more accurate distance implies a substantial non-circular and anomalously slow Galactic orbit, consistent with similar observations of W3(OH) (Xu et al., 2006; Hachisuka et al. 2006), as well as line-of-sight velocity residuals in the rotation curve analysis of Brand and Blitz (1993). The Perseus spiral arm of the Galaxy is thus more than a factor of two closer than previously presumed, and exhibits motions substantially at odds with axisymmetric models of the rotating Galaxy., Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures; Accepted by ApJ (to appear March 2009)

We present high angular resolution observations, using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) of the NRAO, of the high-velocity water masers toward the "water-fountain" pre-planetary nebula, IRAS 16342-3814. The detailed structure of the water masers appears to be that of bow shocks on either side of a highly collimated jet. The proper motions of the water masers are approximately equal to the radial velocities; the three-dimensional velocities are approximately +/-180 km/s, which leads to a very short dynamical time-scale of ~100 years. Although we do not find direct evidence for precession of the fast collimated jet, there may be indirect evidence for such precession., Comment: Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

We present Very Large Array observations at 7 millimeters wavelength that resolve the dust emission structure in the disk around the young star TW Hydrae at the scale of the ~4 AU (~0.16") radius inner hole inferred from spectral energy distribution modeling. These high resolution data confirm directly the presence of an inner hole in the dust disk and reveal a high brightness ring that we associate with the directly illuminated inner edge of the disk. The clearing of the inner disk plausibly results from the dynamical effects of a giant planet in formation. We have used the Very Large Array (VLA), linked with the Pie Town Very Long Baseline Array antenna, to determine astrometric positions of 46 radio stars in the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF). Positions were obtained in the ICRF directly through phase referencing of the stars to nearby ICRF quasars whose positions are accurate at the 0.25 mas level. Radio star positions are estimated to be accurate at the 10 mas level, with position errors approaching a few milli-arcseconds for some of the stars observed. Our measured positions were combined with previous measurements taken from as early as 1978 to obtain proper motion estimates for all 46 stars with average uncertainties of ~1.7 mas/yr. We compared our radio star positions and proper motions with the Hipparcos Catalogue data, and find consistency in the reference frames produced by each data set on the 1-sigma level, with errors of ~2.7 mas per axis for the reference frame orientation angles at our mean epoch of 2003.78. No significant spin is found between our radio data frame and the Hipparcos Celestial Reference Frame (HCRF) with largest rotation rates of +0.55 and -0.41 mas/yr around the x and z axes, respectively, with 1-sigma errors of 0.36 mas/yr. We describe Very Large Array observations of the extreme carbon star IRC+10216 at 8.4, 14.9, and 22.5 GHz made over a two year period. We find possible variability correlated with the infrared phase and a cm- to sub-millimeter wavelength spectral index very close to 2. The variability, observed flux densities, and upper limit on the size are consistent with the emission arising from the stellar photosphere or a slightly larger radio photosphere., Comment: 9 pages, incl. 4 figures. This article reports first results of a long-term observational program aimed to study the earliest evolution of jet/disk systems in low-mass YSOs by means of VLBI observations of the 22.2 GHz water masers. We report here data for the cluster of low-mass YSOs in the Serpens molecular core and for the single object RNO~15-FIR. Towards Serpens SMM1, the most luminous sub-mm source of the Serpens cluster, the water maser emission comes from two small (< 5 AU in size) clusters of features separated by ~25 AU, having line of sight velocities strongly red-shifted (by more than 10 km/s) with respect to the LSR velocity of the molecular cloud. The two maser clusters are oriented on the sky along a direction that is approximately perpendicular to the axis of the radio continuum jet observed with the VLA towards SMM1. The spatial and velocity distribution of the maser features lead us to favor the interpretation that the maser emission is excited by interaction of the receding lobe of the jet with dense gas in the accretion disk surrounding the YSO in SMM1. Towards RNO~15-FIR, the few detected maser features have both positions and (absolute) velocities aligned along a direction that is parallel to the axis of the molecular outflow observed on much larger angular scales. In this case the maser emission likely emerges from dense, shocked molecular clumps displaced along the axis of the jet emerging from the YSO. The protostar in Serpens SMM1 is more massive than the one in RNO~15-FIR. We discuss the case where a high mass ejection rate can generate jets sufficiently powerful to sweep away from their course the densest portions of circumstellar gas. We present Very Large Array observations at 3.5 cm of the nearby young star TW Hya that show the emission is constant in time over weeks, months and years, and spatially resolved with peak brightness temperature ~10 K at ~0.25 (15 AU) resolution. These features are naturally explained if the emission mechanism at this wavelength is thermal emission from dust particles in the disk surrounding the star. To account quantitatively for the observations, we construct a self-consistent accretion disk model that incorporates a population of centimeter size particles that matches the long wavelength spectrum and spatial distribution. A substantial mass fraction of orbiting particles in the TW Hya disk must have agglomerated to centimeter size. These data provide the first clear indication that dust emission from protoplanetary disks may be observed at centimeter wavelengths, and that changes in the spectral slope of the dust emission may be detected, providing constraints on dust evolution and the planet formation process., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

Full-polarization MERLIN and VLBA observations of the 1720-MHz maser emission from the OH molecule in the supernova remnant W44 are presented. Zeeman splitting has been directly resolved between right- and left-circularly polarized spectra indicating magnetic field strengths of B~0.50 mG. The position angle of the linear polarization is in good agreement with the orientation of the shocked gas at the supernova remnant/molecular cloud interface. Based on MERLIN data having a resolution of 200 milliarcseconds (mas) and VLBA data with a resolution of 15 mas, the masers are measured to have deconvolved angular sizes of 50 to 350 mas (150 to 1000 AU) with compact cores 20 mas (60 AU) in size, consistent with theoretical expectation and previous observations., Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures, 7 tables; accepted to ApJ

Milli-arcsecond resolution Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of the archetype WR+O star colliding-wind binary (CWB) system WR140 are presented for 23 epochs between orbital phases 0.74 and 0.97. At 8.4 GHz, the emission in the wind-collision region (WCR) is clearly resolved as a bow-shaped arc that rotates as the orbit progresses. We interpret this rotation as due to the O star moving from SE to approximately E of the WR star, which leads to solutions for the orbit inclination of 122+/-5 deg, the longitude of the ascending node of 353+/-3 deg, and an orbit semi-major axis of 9.0+/-0.5 mas. The distance to WR140 is determined to be 1.85+/-0.16 kpc, which requires the O star to be a supergiant. The inclination implies the mass of the WR and O star to be 20+/-4 and 54+/-10 solar masses respectively. We determine a wind-momentum ratio of 0.22, with an expected half-opening angle for the WCR of 63 deg, consistent with 65+/-10 deg derived from the VLBA observations. Total flux measurements from Very Large Array (VLA) observations show the radio emission from WR140 is very closely the same from one orbit to the next, pointing strongly toward emission, absorption and cooling mechanism(s) that are controlled largely by the orbital motion. The synchrotron spectra evolve dramatically through the orbital phases observed, exhibiting both optically thin and optically thick emission. Full-polarization MERLIN and VLBA observations of the 1720 MHz maser emission from the OH molecule in the supernova remnant W28 are presented. Zeeman splitting (|B| \approx 0.75 mG) has been directly resolved between right- and left-circularly polarized spectra for the first time. Linear-polarization position angles and circular-polarization Zeeman splitting observed in the maser emission permit interpretation of a comprehensive picture of the magnetic field at the supernova/molecular cloud interface marked by the masers. We find the post-SNR-shock magnetic field to be well-ordered over the ~1 pc covered by the maser region (compared with the approximately 30-pc diameter of the entire SNR) and well-aligned with the shock front that is traced by synchrotron radiation and molecular emission. Based on MERLIN data having a resolution of 200 mas and VLBA data with a resolution of 15 mas, the masers are measured to have deconvolved angular sizes of 90 to 350 mas (225 to 875 AU) with compact cores 20 mas (50 AU) in size, consistent with theoretical expectation and previous observations., Comment: AASTeX, 50 pages, 16 figures (four bitmapped for arXiv), 8 tables; accepted to ApJ

Milliarcsecond resolution Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of the archetype WR+O star colliding-wind binary (CWB) system WR140 have been obtained at 23 epochs between orbital phases 0.74 to 0.97. The emission in the wind-collision region (WCR) is resolved as a bow-shaped arc which rotates as the orbital phase progresses. This rotation provides for the first time the inclination of the orbit (122+/-5 degrees), the longitude of the ascending node (353+/-3 degrees), and the orbit semi-major axis (9.0+/-0.5 mas). The implied distance is 1.85+/-0.16 kpc, which requires the O star to be a supergiant, and leads to a wind-momentum ratio of 0.22. Quasi-simultaneous Very Large Array (VLA) observations show the synchrotron spectra evolve dramatically through the orbital phases observed, exhibiting both optically thin and optically thick emission. We have observed the massive star forming region associated with the early B protostar G192.16-3.84 in NH3(1,1), 22.2 GHz water masers, 1.3 cm continuum emission, and at 850 microns. The dense gas associated with G192.16 is clumpy, optically thin, and has a mass of 0.9 Msun. The ammonia core is gravitationally unstable which may signal that the outflow phase of this system is coming to an end. Water masers trace an ionized jet 0.8" (1600 AU at a distance of 2 kpc) north of G192.16. Masers are also located within 500 AU of G192.16, their velocity distribution is consistent with but does not strongly support the interpretation that the maser emission arises in a 1000 AU rotating disk centered on G192.16. Roughly 30" south of G192.16 (0.3 pc) is a compact, optically thick (optical depth = 1.2) ammonia core (called G192 S3) with an estimated mass of 2.6 Msun. Based on the presence of 850 micron and 1.2 mm continuum emission, G192 S3 probably harbors a very young, low-mass protostar or proto-cluster. We have made the first unambiguous detection of vibrational ground-state maser emission from SiO toward six evolved stars. Using the Very Large Array, we simultaneously observed the v=0, J=1-0, 43.4-GHz, ground-state and the v=1, J=1-0, 43.1-GHz, first excited-state transitions of SiO toward the oxygen-rich evolved stars IRC+10011, o Ceti, W Hya, RX Boo, NML Cyg, and R Cas and the S-type star chi Cyg. We detected at least one v=0 SiO maser feature from six of the seven stars observed, with peak maser brightness temperatures ranging from 10,000 K to 108,800 K. In fact, four of the seven v=0 spectra show multiple maser peaks, a phenomenon which has not been previously observed. Ground-state thermal emission was detected for one of the stars, RX Boo, with a peak brightness temperature of 200 K. Comparing the v=0 and the v=1 transitions, we find that the ground-state masers are much weaker with spectral characteristics different from those of the first excited-state masers. For four of the seven stars the velocity dispersion is smaller for the v=0 emission than for the v=1 emission, for one star the dispersions are roughly equivalent, and for two stars (one of which is RX Boo) the velocity spread of the v=0 emission is larger. In most cases, the peak flux density in the v=0 emission spectrum does not coincide with the v=1 maser peak. Although the angular resolution of these VLA observations were insufficient to completely resolve the spatial structure of the SiO emission, the SiO spot maps produced from the interferometric image cubes suggest that the v=0 masers are more extended than their v=1 counterparts.

We have used the Very Large Array, linked with the Pie Town Very Long Baseline Array antenna, to determine astrometric positions of 19 radio stars in the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF). The positions of these stars were directly linked to the positions of distant quasars through phase referencing observations. The positions of the ICRF quasars are known to 0.25 mas, thus providing an absolute reference at the angular resolution of our radio observations. Average values for the errors in our derived positions for all sources were 13 mas and 16 mas in R.A. and declination respectively, with accuracies approaching 1-2 mas for some of the stars observed. Differences between the ICRF positions of the 38 quasars, and those measured from our observations showed no systematic offsets, with mean values of -0.3 mas in R.A. and -1.0 mas in declination. Standard deviations of the quasar position differences of 17 mas and 11 mas in R.A. and declination respectively, are consistent with the mean position errors determined for the stars. Our measured positions were combined with previous Very Large Array measurements taken from 1978-1995 to determine the proper motions of 15 of the stars in our list. With mean errors of approximately 1.6 mas/yr, the accuracies of our proper motions approach those derived from Hipparcos, and for a few of the stars in our program, are better than the Hipparcos values. Comparing the positions of our radio stars with the Hipparcos catalog, we find that at the epoch of our observations, the two frames are aligned to within formal errors of approximately 3 mas. MERLIN and VLBA observations of the 1720 MHz maser emission from the OH molecule in the supernova remnant IC443 are presented. Based on MERLIN data with a resolution of 160 mas, the deconvolved sizes of the maser sources are in the range 90 to 180 mas (135 to 270 AU). The 12 mas resolution VLBA images show compact cores with sizes in the range 15 to 55 mas. The maser brightness temperatures are (2-34)x10^6 K for the MERLIN sources and (5-19)x10^8 K for the VLBA cores, in agreement with theory. Unlike the Zeeman Stokes V profiles observed in other OH (1720 MHz) SNR masers, single-handed circular polarization line profiles are observed in IC443 on all angular scales from 1000 to 10 mas resolution. For one line component, the observed line width is 0.24+/-0.07 km/s, compared to an estimated Doppler width of 0.49 km/s. We have used the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA) in conjunction with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) Pie Town antenna as a real-time interferometer system to measure the size of the extragalactic source J1801-231 as a function of frequency from 1285 to 4885 MHz. These observations were made in an attempt to determine the effect interstellar scattering has on the observed sizes of OH (1720 MHz) masers in the nearby (d=2.5 kpc) supernova remnant W28. The observations clearly show that J1801-231 displays angular broadening due to turbulence in the Galaxy's interstellar medium. The minimum distance of the nearby (two arcminutes from J1801-231) pulsar PSR B1758-23 is constrained to be 9.4 +/- 2.4 kpc. This value is based on both the measured size of 220 mas for J1801-231 at 1715 MHz and the temporal broadening of the pulsar. A single thin scattering screen along the line of sight to the W28 OH(1720 MHz) masers must be at 4.7 +/- 1.2 kpc for this minimum pulsar distance. The screen may be placed closer to the Earth, but for reasonable values of the pulsar distance (i.e., the pulsar is within the Galaxy), this choice leads to a negligible scattering contribution to the sizes of the masers. Thus the OH(1720 MHz) masers, at a distance of 2.5 +/- 0.7 kpc, are unaffected by interstellar scattering, and the measured maser sizes must be intrinsic. We report new (1995) Very Large Array observations and (1984 - 1999) Effelsberg 100m monitoring observations of the 22 GHz H2O maser spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. The sensitive VLA observations provide a registration of the 22 GHz continuum emission and the location of the maser spots with an accuracy of ~ 5 mas. Within the monitoring data, we find evidence that the nuclear masers vary coherently on time-scales of months to years, much more rapidly than the dynamical time-scale. We argue that the nuclear masers are responding in reverberation to a central power source, presumably the central engine. Between October and November 1997, we detected a simultaneous flare of the blue-shifted and red-shifted satellite maser lines. Reverberation in a rotating disk naturally explains the simultaneous flaring. There is also evidence that near-infrared emission from dust grains associated with the maser disk also responds to the central engine. We present a model in which an X-ray flare results in both the loss of maser signal in 1990 and the peak of the near-infrared light curve in 1994. In support of a rotating disk geometry for the nuclear masers, we find no evidence for centripetal accelerations of the redshifted nuclear masers; the limits are +/- 0.006 km/s/year, implying that the masers are located within 2 degrees of the kinematic line-of-nodes. We also searched for high velocity maser emission like that observed in NGC 4258. In both VLA and Effelsberg spectra, we detect no high velocity lines between +/- 350 km/s to +/- 850 km/s relative to systemic, arguing that masers only lie outside a radius of ~ 0.6 pc (1.9 light years) from the central engine (assuming a distance of 14.4 Mpc)., Comment: 62 pages, 19 figures

We report multi-epoch VLA H I absorption observations of the source 1741-038 (OT-068) before and during an extreme scattering event (ESE). Observations at four epochs, three during the ESE, were obtained. We find no changes in the equivalent width, maximum optical depth, or velocity of maximum optical depth during the ESE, but we do find a secular trend of decreasing maximum optical depth between our observations and ones by other observers a decade prior. The resulting limit on the H I column density change during the ESE for a structure with a spin temperature T_s is 6.4 x 10^{17} cm^{-2} (T_s/10 K). Tiny-scale atomic structures (TSAS), with a column density N_H ~ 3 x 10^{18} cm^{-2}, are ruled out marginally by this limit, though geometric arguments may allow this limit to be relaxed. We have used the NRAO Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) to image OH(1720 MHz) masers in the supernova remnants W28 and W44 at a resolution of 40 mas. We also used MERLIN to observe the same OH(1720 MHz) masers in W44 at a resolution of 290 x 165 mas. All the masers are resolved by these VLBA and MERLIN observations. The measured sizes range from 50 to 180 mas and yield brightness temperature estimates from 0.3--20 x 10**8 K. We investigate whether these measured angular sizes are intrinsic and hence originate as a result of the physical conditions in the supernova remnant shock, or whether they are scatter broadened sizes produced by the turbulent ionized gas along the line of sight. While the current data on the temporal and angular broadening of pulsars, masers and extragalactic soures toward W44 and W28 can be understood in terms of scattering, we cannot rule out that these large sizes are intrinsic. Recent theoretical modeling by Lockett et al. suggests that the physical parameters in the shocked region are indicative of densities and OH abundances which lead to estimates of sizes as large as what we measure. If the sizes and structure are intrinsic, then the OH(1720 MHz) masrs may be more like the OH(1612 MHz) masers in circumstellar shells than OH masers associated with HII regions. At two locations in W28 we observe the classical S-shapes in the Stokes V profiles caused by Zeeman splitting and use it to infer magnetic fields of order 2 milliGauss., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures, accepted by ApJ

We present the results of VLA observations in the ground-state hydroxyl (OH) transition at 1720 MHz toward 20 supernova remnants (SNRs). We detect compact emission from four objects. For three of these objects (G32.8-0.1, G337.8-0.1, and G346.6-0.2), we argue that the emission results from masers which are shock-excited due to the interaction of the SNR and an adjacent molecular cloud. We observe a characteristic Zeeman profile in the Stokes V spectrum, which allows us to derive a magnetic field of 1.5 and 1.7 mG for G32.8-0.1 and G346.6-0.2, respectively. The velocity of the masers also allows us to determine a kinematic distance to the SNR. Our criteria for a maser to be associated with an SNR along the line of sight are that the position and velocity of the maser and SNR must agree, and the OH(1720) emission must be unaccompanied by other OH lines., Comment: Accepted to the Astronomical Journal (19 pages total, 6 figures, 4 tables)

We present spectroscopic imaging observations of the molecular and HI 21cm absorbing cloud at z = 0.885 toward the `Einstein ring' radio source PKS 1830-211. We derive a cloud size between 10 h^{-1} pc and 600 h^{-1} pc, and M(H_2) > 2.6x10^{4} h^{-2} Msolar. The temperature of the ambient radiation field is 4.5+/-0.9 K, consistent with the microwave background temperature at z = 0.885. The velocity difference for absorption on opposite sides of the ring is -146 km s^{-1}, which is consistent with the galaxian rotation velocity derived from gravitational lens models., Comment: for `Probing the Intergalactic Medium with QSO Absorption Lines,' ed. (abridged) - We present arcsecond resolution observations from the VLA of the satellite line of the hydroxyl molecule (OH) at 1720.53 MHz toward three Galactic supernova remnants: W28, W44 and IC443. All of our observations are consistent with a model in which the OH(1720 MHz) is collisionally excited by H2 molecules in the postshock gas heated by a non-dissociative shock. Supernova remnants with OH(1720 MHz) maser emission may be promising candidates to conduct high energy searches for the sites of cosmic ray acceleration., Comment: ApJ Let (accepted).
