Abstract

Introduction: Integrating genetic data into conservation management decisions is a challenging task that requires strong partnerships between researchers and managers. Conservation in Latin America is of crucial relevance worldwide given the high biodiversity levels and the presence of hotspots in this region. Methods: We conducted a survey across Latin America to identify gaps and opportunities between genetic researchers and conservation managers. We aimed to better understand conservation managers' points of view and how genetic research could help conservation practitioners to achieve their goals, by implementing genetic assessments that could effectively inform conservation practices. We distributed an online survey via four regional collaborating organizations and 32 focal points based in 20 Latin American countries. The target respondents were conservation managers of species or areas in Latin America. Results: We collected a total of 468 answered questionnaires from 21 Latin American countries. Most respondents (44%) were from an academic or research institution while non-academics were mainly from non-governmental institutions (30%) and government agencies (25%). Most respondents (65%) have performed or used genetic assessments in their managed area or species, either alone, in partnership, contracting someone else or using published results. For the majority of this group, the genetic results were relevant to their conservation management goals, helping to inform management decisions. Respondents that had not performed genetic assessments (35%) were mainly from the non-academic group, and their main barriers were limited access to funds, genetic lab facilities, and trained personnel to design studies and conduct lab work. Discussion: From the findings, we describe the current situation and provide a general diagnosis of the conservation-genetics gap in Latin America. We describe the gender gap, academic-practitioner co-development of conservation questions and projects, and the nationality and residency of Latin American conservation managers in relation to the countries where they work. We discuss opportunities to co-create research questions and co-develop studies based on conservation practitioners' needs. We offer recommendations for overcoming barriers to integrate genetic information into conservation actions, and advance agendas that fit the needs and realities of the highly heterogeneous, biodiverse and challenging Latin American region. Abstract

Freshwater mussels are declining globally, and effective conservation requires prioritizing research and actions to identify and mitigate threats impacting mussel species. Conservation priorities vary widely, ranging from preventing imminent extinction to maintaining abundant populations. Here, we develop a portfolio of priority research topics for freshwater mussel conservation assessment. To address these topics, we group research priorities into two categories: intrinsic or extrinsic factors. Intrinsic factors are indicators of organismal or po-pulation status, while extrinsic factors encompass environmental variables and threats. An understanding of intrinsic factors is useful in monitoring, and of extrinsic factors are important to understand ongoing and po-tential impacts on conservation status. This dual approach can guide conservation status assessments prior to the establishment of priority species and implementation of conservation management actions.

22. Critical reduction of the geographic distribution of Cyanocyclas (Cyrenidae: Bivalvia) in Uruguay.

Abstract

The South American endemic corbiculid genus Cyanocyclas comprises about 15 nominal species described from Uruguay. Of these, only two are at present considered valid species. Several authors have reported population declines of these species after the settlement and spread of the invasive genus Corbicula, and even the disappearance of Cyanocyclas populations from certain localities.This article reviews the historical and present geographical distribution of Cyanocyclas spp. in Uruguay. Of the localities where Cyanocyclas spp. have been reported previously, 75% were re‐surveyed during 2009 and 2012, but Cyanocyclas spp. were found to be present in only five of these locations (7.1%).In addition to Cyanocyclas limosa and Cyanocyclas paranensis, at least three morphotypes not attributable to any of these species were found; therefore, the reduction in range may be more severe than expected.The putative effect of the invasive bivalve Corbicula fluminea and other stressors is briefly discussed.The adequate management of the few extant populations is a key issue in ensuring the conservation of Cyanocyclas. 23. Distribucion del genero Anodontites (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Mycetopodidae) en Uruguay

Abstract

Distribution of the genus Anodontites (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Mycetopodidae) in Uruguay. Seven species of the freshwater mussel genus Anodontites were recorded from Uruguay. The populations of these bivalves suffer the negative effects of invasive bivalves, damming, industrial and urban discharges, and agrotoxic runoff. The distribution of these species is generally characterized at the level of basin or politic divisions, and precise geographic records are scarce. In order to detail the distribution of those species, the most representative collections of Uruguay were examined, the material of Anodontites was identified (612 records) and geographic coordenates were assigned at each locality (213 localities), using Geographic Information System (GIS) to obtain a distribution map for each species. Most of the localities with Anodontites were located in the left margin of Uruguay River and southwest of Uruguay, mainly in Soriano, Artigas, Salto and Colonia departments. The Salto Grande basin presented the highest species richness. The species with a highest number of records was A. patagonicus, which was also recorded in all basins. A. trapesialis and A. tenebricosus had a wide distribution and a high number of records. A. lucidus and A. ferrarisii, had a wide distribution (more than 6 basins) but comparatively lower number of records. Finally A. trapezeus and A. trigonus showed a limited distribution. There is a critical lack of samples in Merín Lagoon, Atlantic and Upper Negro River basins. It is necessary to carry out new sampling considering many variables in order to evaluate the current distribution and the ecologic preferences for each species.
