Current forecasts estimate that almost 68% of the global population will be living in urban centers by 2050. As a result, the increase in impermeable surface area can result in severe hydrological impacts, such as the increase in surface runoff and the frequency of floods and their magnitude. Thus, this work analyzes the performance of the hydrodynamic model HEC-RAS for assessing the extent of flood-prone areas, using two digital terrain models (DTM) with different spatial resolutions (5 and 0.50 m). Four different computing intervals (1, 15, 30, and 60 s) were adopted aiming to evaluate the simulations outputs performance. Additionally, reported data by the civil defense are used for calibration and validation. In general, the model showed to be a powerful tool in the identification of susceptible areas to urban flooding. The simulated results in this work provide crucial geographic information when identifying spots with the highest risk of flooding, which should receive priority attention during such events. The simulations with a spatial resolution of 5 m showed the flood maps with the largest coverage of the flooded points (278 points out of 286—97.20%), within the shortest computation times. We highlight that the more refined DTM derived from spatial images did not produce the best flood simulation compared to the DTM with a spatial resolution of 5 m derived from orthoimages.

Advanced differential SAR interferometry (A-DInSAR) has been used as an effective monitoring tool in mining environments. This work presents an investigation of surface displacement in the Germano iron mining complex (Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil), where on November 5, 2015, the Fundao tailings dam collapsed. Initially, the analysis was performed with 14 Sentinel-1 images, acquired from May 8, 2015, to November 4, 2015, and focused on the Fundao dam before its rupture to detect prior signs of surface deformations. The analysis after the Fundao dam collapse was conducted in the Germano area using 43 Sentinel-1 images, acquired from November 16, 2015 to May 15, 2017, and aimed at detecting surface displacement on the remaining infrastructure, the Sela&Tulipa and Selinha dikes and the main Germano tailings dam, which were directly or indirectly affected by the accident. The results reveal precursor signals of surface displacement at the Fundao dam prior to rupture, particularly on the left abutment setback sector where the collapse started according to a witness, reaching accumulated values of up to −60 mm. The results provided by the A-DInSAR analysis after the dam collapse indicate a stability in the Sela&Tulipa and Selinha dikes as well as in the main Germano dam, which is corroborated by in situ topographic measurements. On the auxiliary dikes within the Germano reservoir, accumulated displacement of up to −90 mm caused by settlements and continuous traffic of vehicles was detected. In addition, the detected accumulate displacement within the reservoir showed values of up to −120 mm, in general caused by settlements of the waste dry material due to the inactivity of the mining process. The investigation emphasized the important role that satellite-based A-DInSAR can play in mitigating possible accidents and for operational planning and risk assessment in mining operations.

Differential Interferometric SAR (DInSAR) has been used to monitor surface deformations in open pit mines and tailings dams. In this paper, ground deformations have been detected on the area of tailings Dam-I at the Córrego do Feijão Mine (Brumadinho, Brazil) before its catastrophic failure occurred on 25 January 2019. Two techniques optimized for different scattering models, SBAS (Small BAseline Subset) and PSI (Persistent Scatterer Interferometry), were used to perform the analysis based on 26 Sentinel-1B images in Interferometric Wide Swath (IW) mode, which were acquired on descending orbits from 03 March 2018 to 22 January 2019. A WorldDEM Digital Surface Model (DSM) product was used to remove the topographic phase component. The results provided by both techniques showed a synoptic and informative view of the deformation process affecting the study area, with the detection of persistent trends of deformation on the crest, middle, and bottom sectors of the dam face until its collapse, as well as the settlements on the tailings. It is worth noting the detection of an acceleration in the displacement time-series for a short period near the failure. The maximum accumulated displacements detected along the downstream slope face were −39 mm (SBAS) and −48 mm (PSI). It is reasonable to consider that Sentinel-1 would provide decision makers with complementary motion information to the in situ monitoring system for risk assessment and for a better understanding of the ongoing instability phenomena affecting the tailings dam.

This work presents an investigation of detection and monitoring of surface motions using Advanced Differential SAR Interferometry (A-DInSAR) with SBAS (Small Baseline Subset) and PSI (Persistent Scatterer Interferometry) techniques in the Germano iron mining complex region (Mariana, Brazil), after the collapse of the Fundao tailing dam occurred on November 5th, 2015. The research was carried out aiming to provide useful information about ground movement monitoring, planning and risk assessment in the area after the tragic event. The analysis was performed using 46 TerraSAR-X images and a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) obtained by Pleiades data. A-DInSAR processing provided the removal of the atmospheric phase artifacts, baseline related errors, DEM height error estimation and finally the ground displacement determination. The results pointed out that with both techniques it was possible to assess the stability conditions of the Germano mining assets, particularly the main structures of the Germano dam and the detection of small settlements in the mining tailings storage, pointing out that these may be an important components for risk management of open pit mining operations, including tailings dams.

Background: The dynamics of gaps plays a role in the regimes of tree mortality, production of coarse woody debris (CWD) and the variability of light in the forest understory. Aims: To quantify the area affected by, and the carbon fluxes associated with, natural gap-phase disturbances in a tropical lowland evergreen rain forest by use of ground measurements and high-resolution satellite images. Methods: We surveyed two large forest inventory plots of 114 and 53 ha of the Tapajos National Forest (TNF) in the Brazilian Amazon during 2008 and 2009, respectively. We mapped all gaps and collected data on light availability, CWD stocks and tree mortality in the field. Gap location, canopy openness (CO) and leaf area index (LAI) estimated in the field were compared with two IKONOS–2 high-resolution satellite images acquired at approximately the time of the field measurements. This study evaluates the potential of C- and L-band polarimetric SAR data for the discrimination of iron-mineralized laterites in the Brazilian Amazon region. The study area is the N1 plateau located on the northern border of the Carajás Mineral Province, the most important Brazilian mineral province which has numerous mineral deposits, particularly the world’s largest iron deposits. The plateau is covered by low-density savanna-type vegetation (campus rupestres) which contrasts visibly with the dense equatorial forest. The laterites are subdivided into three units: chemical crust, iron-ore duricrust, and hematite, of which only the latter two are of economic interest. Full polarimetric data from the airborne R99B sensor of the SIVAM/CENSIPAM (L-band) system and the RADARSAT-2 satellite (C-band) were evaluated. The study focused on an assessment of distinct schemes for digital classification based on decomposition theory and hybrid approach, which incorporates statistical analysis as input data derived from the target decomposition modeling. The results indicated that the polarimetric classifications presented a poor performance, with global Kappa values below 0.20. The accuracy for the identification of units of economic interest varied from 55% to 89%, albeit with high commission error values. In addition, the results using L-band were considered superior compared to C-band, which suggest that the roughness scale for laterite discrimination in the area is nearer to L than to C-band.

In this paper, the feasibility of using planialtimetric information derived from RADARSAT-2 (RST-2) ultra-fine (UF) stereo pairs and fine quad-pol (FQP) images for detailed topographic mapping was investigated for a semiarid terrain in the Curaca Valley, northeast of Brazil. Precise topographic field information acquired from a global positioning system was used for ground control points for the modeling of the stereoscopic digital surface models (DSMs), ortho-images, and as independent check points for the calculation of planialtimetric accuracies. The Brazilian Amazon has a deficit of 35% of coverage regarding topographic mapping at semi-detailed (1:100,000) scale. This paper presents an alternative to overcome this scenario using a combination of planialtimetric information from two orbital SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) missions. The altimetry was acquired from Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), while the planimetry was provided from Fine Beam Dual (FBD) images of the Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) sensor. The research was carried out in the mountainous area of the Serra dos Carajás (Pará State), located on the Amazon region. The quality of the orbital topographic information was evaluated regarding precise planialtimetric measurements acquired from Global Positioning System (GPS) field campaigns. The evaluations were performed following two approaches: (1) the use of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and (2) tendency and precision hypothesis tests. The investigation has shown that the planialtimetric quality of the orbital products fulfilled the Brazilian Map Accuracy Standards requirements for 1:100,000 A Class map. Thus, the use of combination of information provided by PALSAR and SRTM-3 data can be considered a promising alternative for production and update of semi-detailed topographic mapping in similar environments of the Amazon region, where topographic information is lacking or presents low quality.A Amazônia brasileira possui um déficit de 35% de cobertura em relação ao mapeamento topográfico na escala de semi-detalhe (1:100.000). Este trabalho apresenta uma alternativa para superar este cenário usando a combinação de informação planialtimétrica de duas missões SAR (Radar de Abertura Sintética) orbitais. A altimetria foi adquirida da Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), enquanto que a planimetria foi fornecida de imagens Fine Beam Dual (FBD) do sensor Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR). A pesquisa foi desenvolvida na área montanhosa da Serra dos Carajás (Estado do Pará) localizada na região Amazônica. A qualidade das informações topográficas orbitais foi avaliada em relação a medidas planialtimétricas precisas adquiridas de campanhas de campo com Sistema de Posicionamento Global (GPS). As avaliações foram realizadas seguindo duas abordagens: (1) o uso de Erro Médio Quadrático (EMQ) e (2) testes de hipótese de tendência e precisão. A investigação mostrou que a qualidade planialtimétrica dos produtos orbitais atendeu aos requisitos para a Classe A (1:100.000) do Padrão de Exatidão Cartográfica brasileiro. Assim, o uso da combinação de informações fornecidas pelos dados PALSAR e SRTM-3 pode ser considerado como uma alternativa promissora para a produção e atualização de mapeamento topográfico de semi-detalhe em ambientes similares da região Amazônica, onde a informação topográfica é ausente ou apresenta baixa qualidade.

The Brazilian Amazon is a vast territory with an enormous need for mapping and monitoring of renewable and non-renewable resources. Due to the adverse environmental condition (rain, cloud, dense vegetation) and difficult access, topographic information is still poor, and when available needs to be updated or re-mapped. In this paper, the feasibility of using Digital Surface Models (DSMs) extracted from TerraSAR-X Stripmap stereo-pair images for detailed topographic mapping was investigated for a mountainous area in the Carajas Mineral Province, located on the easternmost border of the Brazilian Amazon. The quality of the radargrammetric DSMs was evaluated regarding field altimetric measurements. Precise topographic field information acquired from a Global Positioning System (GPS) was used as Ground Control Points (GCPs) for the modeling of the stereoscopic DSMs and as Independent Check Points (ICPs) for the calculation of elevation accuracies. The analysis was performed following two ways: (1) the use of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and (2) calculations of systematic error (bias) and precision. The test for significant systematic error was based on the Student’s-t distribution and the test of precision was based on the Chi-squared distribution. The investigation has shown that the accuracy of the TerraSAR-X Stripmap DSMs met the requirements for 1:50,000 map (Class A) as requested by the Brazilian Standard for Cartographic Accuracy. Thus, the use of TerraSAR-X Stripmap images can be considered a promising alternative for detailed topographic mapping in similar environments of the Amazon region, where available topographic information is rare or presents low quality.

The investigation has shown that the altimetric accuracy from ASTER fulfilled the Brazilian Map Accuracy Standards elevation requirements for 1:100,000 A Class. In addition, ASTER can provide up-dated planimetric information that is also necessary for cartographic production. Thus, when the environment condition allows the acquisition of stereo-pairs, the use of ASTER can be considered an alternative for semi-detailed topographic mapping in similar environments of the Brazilian Amazon.A Amazônia Brasileira é um rico e vasto território em recursos naturais renováveis e nãorenováveis. Devido às condições ambientais adversas (chuvas, nuvens, vegetação densa) e difícil acesso, a informação topográfica ainda é escassa, e quando disponível necessita ser atualizada ou remapeada. Neste trabalho, a viabilidade de usar elevação para mapeamento topográfico por meio de imagens estereoscópicas orbitais ASTER foi investigada para relevo montanhoso na Serra dos Carajás, Pará. A qualidade da informação produzida destas imagens ópticas foi avaliada considerando medidas altimétricas de campo. Informações topográficas precisas de campo, adquiridas a partir do Sistema de Posicionamento Global (GPS), foram usadas como Pontos de Controle no Terreno (GCPs) para a modelagem de Modelos Digitais de Elevação (DEMs) estereoscópicos e como Pontos de Verificação Independentes (ICPs), para o cálculo das precisões em elevação. As análises foram realizadas seguindo duas abordagens: (1) a utilizaçãodo Erro Médio Quadrático (RMSE) e (2) cálculo das análises de tendência e precisão. A investigação mostrou que a acurácia altimétrica do ASTER atendeu aos requisitos altimétricos para a Classe A 1:100.000 do Padrão de Exatidão Cartográfico. Além disso, dados ASTER podem fornecer informação planimétrica atualizada que também é necessária para a produção cartográfica. Assim, quando as condições ambientais permitem a obtenção de estéreopares, o uso do imageamento ASTER pode ser considerado uma alternativa valiosa para mapeamento topográfico de semi-detalhe em ambientes similares da Amazônia Brasileira.

This paper addresses the influence of microtopography (root mean square height HRMS and correlation length LC) on RADARSAT-1 and phased array L-band synthetic aperture radar (PALSAR) backscattering coefficient (σ0) values from distinct rock alteration products of the Cu-rich district of Curaca Valley, northeastern Brazil. The area is characterized by a semiarid environment, flat topography with rock outcrops and residual soils, and low to moderate Caatinga vegetation cover. The lithologies consist of Archean gneisses and granulites interbedded with mafic-ultramafic intrusives and upper Proterozoic marbles, schists, and phyllites. The images were acquired under distinct look azimuth and incidence angles and corresponded to four RADARSAT-1 images (F2, S2, and S7 ascending and S7 descending) and one PALSAR image (fine beam dual (FBD) descending). Difficulties in acquiring a complete aerial photography coverage on a regular basis in the Brazilian Amazon due to adverse environmental conditions affect the quality of the national topographic database. As a consequence, topographic information is still poor, and when available needs to be up-dated or re-mapped. In this research, altimetric information derived from RADARSAT-1 (Fine and Standard modes), SRTM3 (3 arcseconds) and ASTER (band 3N-3B) was evaluated for topographic mapping in two sites located in the region: Serra dos Carajás (mountainous relief) and Tapajós National Forest (flat terrain). The quality of the information produced from Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) was evaluated regarding field altimetric measurements. Precise topographic field information acquired from Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) was used as Ground Control Points (GCPs) for the modeling of the stereoscopic DEMs (RADARSAT- 1, ASTER) and as Independent Check Points (ICPs) for the calculation of accuracies of the products. The accuracies were estimated by comparison of the DEMs values and real elevation values given by ICPs. The analysis was performed following two approaches: (1) the use of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) for the overall classification of the DEMs considering the Brazilian Map Accuracy Standards (PEC) limits and, (2) calculations of trend analysis and accuracy based on a methodology that takes into account computed discrepancies and standard deviations. The investigation has shown that for flat relief, the altimetric accuracy of SRTM3 and Fine RADARSAT-1 DEMs fulfilled the PEC requirements for 1:100,000 A Class Map. However, for mountainous terrain, only the altimetry of SRTM3 and ASTER fulfilled these requirements. In addition, the performance of ASTER was slightly superior to SRTM3. However it is important to consider the difficulties in the acquisition of good stereo-pairs with optical data in the Amazon and the additional cost (GCPs) to produce ASTER DEMs. Despite showing systematic errors, the findings justify the usage of SRTM3 as a primary elevation source for semi-detailed topographic mapping in the region. It is suggested a combination of altimetry derived for SRTM3 and planimetry extracted from high-resolution SAR (ALOS/PALSAR, TerraSARX, RADARSAT-2) or if available optical data for semi-detailed topographic mapping programs in the Brazilian Amazon, where terrain information is seldom available or presents low quality.

The feasibility of topographic mapping through orbital remote sensing was investigated for the Brazilian Amazon. The study area is in a region of low topographic terrain within the Tapajos National Forest. Two kinds of radargrammetric digital elevation models (DEMs), one based solely on satellite ancillary data and one calibrated with ground control points (GCPs), were produced based on a fine RADARSAT-1 stereopair (F2/F5) and evaluated regarding accurate field planialtimetric measurements. The geometric modeling for the DEM extractions was based on the RADARSAT-1 specific model from OESE software (PCI Geomatics Inc.). The assessment of elevation accuracy of digital elevation models (DEM), which comprise digital surface models (DSM) and digital terrain models (DTM), has become a recurrent theme in the scientific literature in the latest decades. Accuracy tests are specifically based on a 10% level of statistical significance and they comprise both trend and precision analyses. Both tests were applied to data obtained from an air survey accomplished with the ALTM 2025 laser scanning sensor for a central sector of Uberlandia city, Brazil. The statistical tests for the DSM and DTM demonstrated that the mean elevation error respectively lay around 0,41 m and 0,48 m, and the RMSE about 0,48 m and 0,47 m. In both cases, the presence of trend in the H direction was observed, revealing systematic influences in this component. This trend was further removed by means of algebraic manipulations. The precision analysis revealed that the DSM and DTM were compatible with a 1∶5,000 scale and were up to the standard of the highest cartographic accuracy category (class A - PEC).

PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO Este trabalho propõe e avalia arquiteturas profundas para o reconhecimento de culturas agrícolas a partir de seqüências de imagens multitemporais de sensoriamento remoto. Essas arquiteturas combinam a capacidade de modelar contexto espacial prórpia de redes totalmente convolucionais com a capacidade de modelr o contexto temporal de redes recorrentes para a previsão prever culturas agrícolas em cada data de uma seqüência de imagens multitemporais. O desempenho destes métodos é avaliado em dois conjuntos de dados públicos. Ambas as áreas apresentam alta dinâmica espaçotemporal devido ao clima tropical/subtropical e a práticas agrícolas locais, como a rotação de culturas. Nos experimentos verificou-se que as arquiteturas propostas superaram os métodos recentes baseados em redes recorrentes em termos de Overall Accuracy (OA) e F1-score médio por classe. This work proposes and evaluates deep learning architectures for multi-date agricultural crop recognition from remote sensing image sequences. These architectures combine the spatial modelling capabilities of fully convolutional networks and the sequential modelling capabilities of recurrent networks into end-to-end architectures so-called fully convolutional recurrent networks, configured to predict crop type at multiple dates from a multitemporal image sequence. Their performance is assessed over two publicly available datasets. Both datasets present highly spatio-temporal dynamics due to their tropical/sub-tropical climate and local agricultural practices such as crop rotation. The experiments indicated that the proposed architectures outperformed state of the art methods based on recurrent networks in terms of Overall Accuracy (OA) and per-class average F1 score.
