1. The State of Planning of Automation Projects in the Libraries of Canada.

Abstract

Library automation in Canada is complicated by the large size, dispersed population, and cultural diversity of the country. The National Library of Canada is actively planning a Canadian library network based on national bibliographic services for which the library is now developing automated systems. Canadian libraries are involved in the planning through cooperative projects, consultation, pilot projects, and training seminars. The National Library develops the standards necessary for successful cooperative use of bibliographic machine-readable records. The Canadian National Science Library concentrates on information retrieval services utilizing available data bases. At the regional or provincial level, a number of other automation projects are taking place or being planned. The central provinces of Ontario and Quebec are most advanced in planning bibliographic systems for various types of libraries. These could become part of a total provincial system that forms a node of the national system. (Author/PF)

Abstract

This document presents the medium-term plan (1992-97) of the International Federations of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). IFLA's long-term policy statement is included, and the concept, objectives, orientation, and goals for its five core programs are described. The programs are: Universal Bibliographic Control and International MARC; Universal Availability of Publications; Preservation and Conservation; Universal Dataflow and Telecommunications; and Advancement of Librarianship in the Third World. Following this, the nature and purpose, objectives, and goals are presented for each of the divisions with their sections and round tables. These are the divisions of: (1) General Research Libraries; (2) Special Libraries; (3) Libraries Serving the General Public; (4) Bibliographic Control; (5) Collections and Services; (6) Management and Technology; (7) Education and Research; and (8) Regional Activities. Also included are a list of acronyms; a keyword/subject index to IFLA's professional groups; and an outline and organizational chart of IFLA divisions, sections, and round tables. (MES)

3. The Automated Authority File at the National Library of Canada.

Abstract

This paper discusses the current resurgence of interest in authority files and describes the automated authority files of the National Library of Canada. Factors contributing to this interest in such files include cooperative programs between libraries, the development of international standards, and the impact of computer technology and telecommunications. An automated authority file can result in great savings in time and money, as well as maintaining file integrity while allowing flexibility for local usage. The National Library of Canada, which has always had manual authority files, currently uses a batch mode authority system. A pilot project online authority system, DOBIS (Dortmunder Bibliothekssystem), is now operating at the National Library and the Canada Institute of Scientific and Technical Information for the production of a union list of serials and for reference activities. Completion of the pilot program is expected in September of 1979 with expanded use of the system planned for the year's end. The DOBIS system has been designed to provide decentralized access to all catalogs and files; it is a fully integrated system incorporating cataloging, catalog search, circulation, acquisition, and information retrieval functions. 4. The Resource Network: Major Issues Facing Canadian Libraries = Le Reseau de Ressources: Principaux Problemes Se Posant aux Bibliotheques Canadiennes.

Abstract

This paper describes the state of library resource networks in Canada, raises issues that must be faced by the Resource Network Committee of the National Library Advisory Board, and outlines some of the resource sharing measures and experimental projects undertaken by the National Library of Canada, the Canadian Book Exchange Centre, and other bodies in the United States, United Kingdom, and France. The concept of and need for a library resource network and the future of library collections in times of financial constraint are discussed, as well as the sharing of library resources by means of interlending, union catalogs, location services, document delivery, book exchange, and national lending libraries. Additional legal, political, and funding issues affecting resource networks are also outlined. Seven tables, a list of 19 references, and an appendix covering the background, terms of reference, and members of the National Library Advisory Board Resource Network Committee are included.
