We examine the properties of composite octet baryons in the nuclear medium and neutron star matter. The internal quark-diquark structure of the octet baryons and the equations of state of nuclear matter and neutron star matter in the mean field approximation are described by using the three-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model as an effective quark theory of QCD. After introducing our model, we first discuss the properties of single baryons and their effective meson exchange interactions in symmetric nuclear matter by using concepts of Fermi liquid theory. Several model independent implications of this description are derived, and illustrated by numerical results obtained in our model. Second, we extend the model description to high baryon densities, and investigate the equation of state of neutron star matter and the resulting star masses. We find that the so called hyperon puzzle persists also for the case of composite hadrons. To get more information on this point, we also investigate the role of 6-fermi and 8-fermi interactions, in addition to the standard 4-fermi interactions. The strengths of those higher order fermi interactions is determined so as not to spoil the saturation properties of nuclear matter. Among them, an interaction characterized by a product of four quark current operators plays a special role to stabilize the stars over a large region of central baryon densities, although it has little effect on the maximum star masses., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures

We outline the physics opportunities provided by the Electron Ion Collider (EIC). These include the study of the parton structure of the nucleon and nuclei, the onset of gluon saturation, the production of jets and heavy flavor, hadron spectroscopy and tests of fundamental symmetries. We review the present status and future challenges in EIC theory that have to be addressed in order to realize this ambitious and impactful physics program, including how to engage a diverse and inclusive workforce. In order to address these many-fold challenges, we propose a coordinated effort involving theory groups with differing expertise is needed. We investigate the gluonic structure of nuclei within a mean-field model of nuclear structure based upon the modification of the structure of a bound nucleon, with the nucleon described by the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. This approach has been shown to reproduce the European Muon Collaboration (EMC) effect, involving the ratio of the spin-independent structure functions of a heavier nucleus to that of the deuteron. It also predicts a significant nuclear modification for the spin structure functions, known as the polarized EMC effect. Here we report sizeable nuclear modifications of the gluon distributions (a "gluon EMC effect") for the ratios of both the unpolarized and polarized gluon distributions in nuclear matter to those of a free nucleon., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

We construct a quark target model (QTM) to incorporate intrinsic glue into effective low-energy models of QCD, which often contain only quark degrees of freedom. This method guarantees the gauge invariance of observables order-by-order in the strong coupling. The quark and gluon PDFs for the dressed quarks are obtained in the QTM at leading order. We demonstrate gauge invariance of the results by comparing both covariant and light cone gauges, with the former including an explicit Wilson line contribution. A key finding is that in covariant gauges the Wilson line can carry a significant amount of the light cone momentum. With coupling strength $\alpha_s = 0.5$ and dressed quark mass $M_q = 0.4\,$GeV, we find quark and gluon momentum fractions of $\left_q = 0.81$ and $\left_g = 0.19$, where the Wilson line contribution to the quark momentum fraction is $-0.18$. We use the on-shell renormalization scheme and find that at one-loop this Wilson line contribution does not depend on the covariant gauge but does vanish in light cone gauge as expected. This result demonstrates that it is crucial to account for Wilson line contributions when calculating quantum correlation functions in covariant gauges. We also consider the impact of a gluon mass using the gauge invariant formalism proposed by Cornwall, and combine these QTM results with two quark-level models to obtain quark and gluon PDFs for the pion., Comment: 12 pages

Gluon dressing of the light quarks within hadrons is very strong and extremely important in that it dynamically generates most of the observable mass through the breaking of chiral symmetry. The quark and gluon parton densities, $q(x)$ and $g(x)$, are necessarily interrelated since any gluon emission and absorption process, especially dressing of a quark, contributes to $g(x)$ and modifies $q(x)$. Guided by long-established results for the parton-in-parton distributions from a strict 1-loop perturbative analysis of a quark target, we extend the non-perturbative QCD approach based on the Rainbow-Ladder truncation of the Dyson-Schwinger equations to describe the interrelated valence $q_{\rm v}(x)$ and the dressing-gluon $g(x)$ for a hadron at its intrinsic model scale. We employ the pion description from previous DSE work that accounted for the gluon-in-quark effect and introduce a simple model of the nucleon for exploratory purposes. We find typically \mbox{$\langle x \rangle_g \sim 0.20$} for both pion and nucleon at the model scale, and the valence quark helicity contributes 52\% of nucleon spin. We deduce both $q_{\rm v}(x)$ and $g(x)$ from 30 calculated Mellin moments, and after adopting existing data analysis results for $q_{\rm sea}(x)$, we find that NLO scale evolution produces $g(x)$ in good agreement with existing data analysis results for the pion at 1.3 GeV and the nucleon at 5 GeV$^2$. At the scale 2 GeV typical of lattice-QCD calculations, we obtain \mbox{$\langle x \rangle_g^{\rm N} = 0.42$} in good agreement with 0.38 from the average of recent lattice-QCD calculations., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. The VQE algorithm has turned out to be quite expensive to run given the way we currently access quantum processors (i.e. over the cloud). In order to alleviate this issue, we introduce Quantum Sampling Regression (QSR), an alternative hybrid quantum-classical algorithm, and analyze some of its use cases based on time complexity in the low qubit number regime. In exchange for some extra classical resources, this novel strategy is proved to be optimal in terms of the number of samples it requires from the quantum processor. We develop a simple analytical model to evaluate when this algorithm is more efficient than VQE, and, from the same theoretical considerations, establish a threshold above which quantum advantage can occur. We calculate the leading-twist helicity-dependent generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the proton at finite skewness in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). From these (and previously calculated helicity-independent GPDs) we obtain the spin decomposition of the proton, including predictions for quark intrinsic spin and orbital angular momentum. The inclusion of multiple species of diquarks is found to have a significant effect on the flavor decomposition, and resolving the internal structure of these dynamical diquark correlations proves essential for the mechanical stability of the proton. At a scale of $Q^2=4\,$GeV$^2$ we find that the up and down quarks carry an intrinsic spin and orbital angular momentum of $S_u=0.534$, $S_d=-0.214$, $L_u=-0.189$, and $L_d=0.210$, whereas the gluons have a total angular momentum of $J_g=0.151$. The down quark is therefore found to carry almost no total angular momentum due to cancellations between spin and orbital contributions. In the first part of this paper, we present a study of the symmetry energy ($a_s$) and its slope parameter ($L$) for nuclear matter in the framework of the Fermi liquid theory of Landau and Migdal. We derive an exact relation between $a_s$ and $L$, which involves the nucleon effective masses and three-particle Landau-Migdal parameters. We present simple estimates which suggest that there are two main mechanisms to explain the empirical values of $L$: The proton-neutron effective mass difference in isospin asymmetric matter and the $\ell=0$ moment of the isovector in-medium three-particle scattering amplitude. In the second part of this paper, we discuss the general structure of three-particle interactions in nuclear matter in the framework of the Fermi liquid theory. The connections to the Bethe-Brueckner-Goldstone theory and other approaches are also discussed. We show explicitly how the first few terms in the Faddeev series, together with medium induced three-particle interactions, emerge naturally in the Fermi liquid theory., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

We determine the leading Fock state light front wave functions (LFWFs) of the pion and kaon via light front projections of the covariant Bethe-Salpeter wave function. Using these LFWFs we study the multi-dimensional images of the valence quarks in the pion and kaon that are provided by their generalized parton distribution functions (GPDs) and transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). Moments of the GPDs are taken to obtain the electromagnetic and gravitational form factors of the pion and kaon, and comparisons to available experimental and lattice data are made. Highlights from this study include predictions that the mean-squared impact parameter for the quarks in the pion and kaon are: $\langle \vec{b}_T^2\rangle_{u}^\pi=0.11$fm$^2$, $\langle \vec{b}_T^2\rangle_{s}^K=0.08$fm$^2$, and $\langle \vec{b}_T^2\rangle_{u}^K=0.13$fm$^2$, and therefore the $s$ quark in the kaon is much closer to the center of transverse momentum than the $u$ quark. From the electromagnetic and gravitational form factors we find that the light-cone energy radii are about 60\% smaller than the light-cone charge radii for each quark sector in the pion and kaon. A quantitative measure of the importance of the leading Fock state is obtained via comparison with a full DSE calculation (containing an infinite tower of Fock states) for the pion form factor.

We calculate the leading-twist, helicity-independent generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the proton, at finite skewness, in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model of quantum chomodynamics (QCD). The NJL model reproduces low-energy characteristics of QCD, including dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB). The proton bound-state amplitude is solved for using the Faddeev equation in a quark-diquark approximation, including both dynamical scalar and axial vector diquarks. GPDs are calculated using a dressed non-local correlator, consistent with DCSB, which is obtained by solving a Bethe-Salpeter equation. The model and approximations used observe Lorentz covariance, and as a consequence the GPDs obey polynomiality sum rules. Extractions of electromagnetic and gravitational form factors are performed. We find a D-term of $-1.08$ when the non-local correlator is properly dressed, and $0.85$ when the bare correlator is used instead, suggesting that within this framework proton stability requires the constituent quarks to be dressed consistently with DCSB. We also find that the anomalous gravitomagnetic vanishes, as required by Poincar\'{e} symmetry., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

We present a study of the skewness of nuclear matter, which is proportional to the third derivative of the energy per nucleon with respect to the baryon density at the saturation point, in the framework of the Landau-Migdal theory. We derive an exact relation between the skewness, the nucleon effective mass, and two-particle and three-particle interaction parameters. We calculate the gravitational form factors of the pion, sigma meson, and rho meson in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model of quantum chromodynamics. The canonical energy-momentum tensor (EMT) is used in their derivation, allowing the possibility of an antisymmetric contribution when the hadron has intrinsic spin. We show that the asymmetric graviton vertex arising from the canonical EMT satisfies a simpler Ward-Takahashi identity (WTI) than the symmetric graviton vertex of the Belinfante EMT. The necessity of fully dressing the graviton vertex through the relevant Bethe-Salpeter equation is demonstrated for observing both the WTI and a low-energy pion theorem. Lastly, we calculate static moments of the meson EMT decompositions, obtaining predictions for the meson mass radii. We find light cone mass radii of 0.27 fm for the pion, 0.32 fm for the sigma, and 0.25 fm for the rho. For the pion and rho, these are smaller than the light cone charge radii, respectively 0.51 fm and 0.45 fm, while we have a sigma charge radius of zero. Our light cone pion mass radius agrees with a phenomenological extraction from KEKB data., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures

We construct the equation of state for high density neutron star matter at zero temperature using the two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model as an effective theory of QCD. We build nuclear matter, quark matter, and the mixed phases from the same NJL Lagrangian, which has been used to model free and in-medium hadrons as well as nuclear systems. A focus here is to determine if the same coupling constants in the scalar diquark and vector meson channels, which give a good description of nucleon structure and nuclear matter, can also be used for the color superconducting high density quark matter phase. We find that this is possible for the scalar diquark (pairing) interaction, but the vector meson interaction has to be reduced so that superconducting quark matter becomes the stable phase at high densities. We compare our equation of state with recent phenomenological parametrizations based on generic stability conditions for neutron stars. We find that the maximum mass of a neutron star, with a color superconducting quark matter core, exceeds $2.01 \pm 0.04\,M_\odot$ which is the value of the recently observed massive neutron star PSR J0348+0432. The mass-radius relation is also consistent with gravitational wave observations (GW170817)., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

This whitepaper is an outcome of the workshop Intersections between Nuclear Physics and Quantum Information held at Argonne National Laboratory on 28-30 March 2018 [www.phy.anl.gov/npqi2018/]. The workshop brought together 116 national and international experts in nuclear physics and quantum information science to explore opportunities for the two fields to collaborate on topics of interest to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science, Office of Nuclear Physics, and more broadly to U.S. society and industry. The workshop consisted of 22 invited and 10 contributed talks, as well as three panel discussion sessions. Effects of charge symmetry breaking associated with the $u$ and $d$ quark mass difference in the elastic form factors of the pion and kaon are presented. We use a confining version of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The pion and kaon are described as a dressed quark and antiquark bound states governed by the Bethe-Salpeter equation, and exhibit the properties of Goldstone bosons, with the pion mass difference given by $m_{\pi^{+}}^2 - m_{\pi^{0}}^2 \propto (m_u -m_d)^2$ as demanded by dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. We found significant charge symmetry breaking effects for realistic current quark mass ratios ($m_u/m_d \sim 0.5$) in the quark electromagnetic form factors of the pion and kaon. The leading-twist parton distribution functions of the pion and kaon are calculated for the first time using a rainbow-ladder truncation of QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs) that self-consistently sums all planar diagrams. The non-perturbative gluon dressing of the quarks is thereby correctly accounted for, which in practice means solving the inhomogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) for the quark operator that defines the spin-independent quark distribution functions. An immediate consequence of using this dressed vertex is that gluons carry 35% of the pion's and 30% of the kaon's light-cone momentum, with the remaining momentum carried by the quarks. The scale associated with these DSE results is $\mu_0 = 0.78\,$GeV. The gluon effects generated by the inhomogeneous BSE are inherently non-perturbative and cannot be mimicked by the perturbative QCD evolution equations. A key consequence of this gluon dressing is that the valence quarks have reduced support at low-to-intermediate $x$, where the gluons dominate, and increased support at large $x$. As a result, our DSE calculation of the pion's valence quark distribution is in excellent agreement with the Conway et al. pion-induced Drell-Yan data, but nevertheless exhibits the $q_\pi(x) \simeq (1-x)^2$ behavior as $x\to 1$ predicted by perturbative QCD., Comment: Improved discussion of results with results unchanged

Starting with the solution to the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the pion, in a beyond rainbow-ladder truncation to QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs), we determine the pion's $l_z=0$ and $|l_z|=1$ leading Fock-state light-front wave functions (LFWFs) [labeled by $\psi_{l_z}(x,k_T^2)$]. The leading-twist time-reversal even transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function (TMD) of the pion is then directly obtained from these LFWFs. A key characteristic of the LFWFs, which is driven by dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, is that at typical hadronic scales they are broad functions in the light-cone momentum fraction $x$. The LFWFs have a non-trivial $(x,k_T^2)$ dependence and in general do not factorize into separate functions of each variable. The $l_z=0$ LFWF is concave with a maximum at $x=1/2$, whereas orbital angular momentum effects causes the $|l_z|=1$ LFWF to have a slight {\it double-humped} structure for quark transverse momentum in the range $0.5 \lesssim k_T^2 \lesssim 5\,$GeV$^2$. For $k_T^2 \lesssim 1\,$GeV$^2$ the $k_T^2$ dependence of the LFWFs is well described by a Gaussian, however for $k_T^2 \gtrsim 10\,$GeV$^2$ these LFWFs behave as $\psi_0 \propto x(1-x)/k_T^2$ and $\psi_1 \propto x(1-x)/k_T^4$, and therefore exhibit the power-law behavior predicted by perturbative QCD. The pion's TMD inherits many features from the LFWFs, where for $k_T^2 \lesssim 1\,$GeV$^2$ the $k_T^2$ dependence is well described by a Gaussian, and for large $k_T^2$ the TMD behaves as $f_\pi^q \propto x^2(1-x)^2/k_T^4$. At the model scale we find the average transverse momentum, defined by a Bessel-weighted moment with $b_T=0.3\,$fm, to equal $\langle k_T^2\rangle = 0.19\,$GeV$^2$. The TMD evolution of our result is studied using both the $b^*$ and $\zeta$ prescriptions which allows a qualitative comparison with existing Drell-Yan data., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

New physics motivated by muonic puzzles (proton radius and muon $g-2$ discrepancies) is studied. Using a light scalar boson $\phi$, assuming Yukawa interactions, accounts for these muonic puzzles simultaneously. Our previous work limits the existence of such a scalar boson's mass $m_\phi$ from about 160 keV to 60 MeV. We improve this result by including the influence of all of the possible particles that couple to the $\phi$ in computing the decay rate. Doing this involves including the strong interaction physics, involving quarks, necessary to compute the $\eta\pi\phi$ vertex function. The Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, which accounts for the spontaneous symmetry breaking that yields the constituent mass is employed to represent the relevant strong-interaction physics. We use the $\eta\pi\phi$ vertex function to reanalyze the electron beam dump experiments. The result is that the allowed range of $m_\phi$ lies between about 160 keV and 3.5 MeV. This narrow range represents an inviting target for ruling out or discovering this scalar boson. A possible UV completion of our phenomenological model is discussed., Comment: 11 pages, 20 figures

We present results for the nucleon's leading-twist spin-independent valence parton distribution functions obtained from a theoretical framework based on the Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs) of QCD that previously gave an excellent description of nucleon electromagnetic form factors. We employ the rainbow-ladder truncation of the DSEs and utilize nucleon bound state amplitudes from the Poincar\'e-covariant Faddeev equation, where the dominant scalar and axial-vector quark-quark correlations are included. This DSE framework is used to numerically evaluate the first 20 moments of the valence $u$ and $d$ quark distribution functions, from which the $x$-dependence of the distributions is found to be well constrained. We find good agreement with empirical parameterizations of experimental data and make the prediction that the $d/u$ ratio in the $x\to 1$ limit, invariant under scale evolution, takes the value $d/u \to 0.087 \pm 0.010$. We find that this ratio is rather sensitive to the strength of axial-vector diquark correlations. However, contrary to a naive expectation, our result for the $d/u$ ratio in the $x\to 1$ limit does not vanish when only scalar diquark correlations are present, although it is an order of magnitude smaller than our $d/u$ result that also includes axial-vector diquarks. The valence quark distribution results are set in a broader context via a simple pion cloud model estimate of sea-quark light-cone momenta and gluon light-cone momentum., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Charge symmetry breaking (CSB) effects associated with the $u$ and $d$ quark mass difference are investigated in the quark distribution functions and spacelike electromagnetic form factors of the pion and kaon. We use a confining version of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, where CSB effects at the infrared scale associated with the model are driven by the dressed $u$ and $d$ quark mass ratio, which because of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking is much closer to unity than the associated current quark mass ratio. The pion and kaon are given as bound states of a dressed quark and a dressed antiquark governed by the Bethe-Salpeter equation, and exhibit the properties of Goldstone bosons, with a pion mass difference given by $m_{\pi^+}^2 - m_{\pi^0}^2 \propto (m_u - m_d)^2$ as demanded by dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. We find significant CSB effects for realistic current quark mass ratios ($m_u/m_d \sim 0.5$) in the quark flavor-sector electromagnetic form factors of both the pion and kaon. For example, the difference between the $u$ and $d$ quark contributions to the $\pi^+$ electromagnetic form factors is about 8\% at a momentum transfer of $Q^2 \simeq 10\,$GeV$^2$, while the analogous effect for the light quark sector form factors in the $K^+$ and $K^0$ is about twice as large. For the Parton distribution functions, we find CSB effects which are considerably smaller than those found in the electromagnetic form factors., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures

We present a covariant formulation and model calculations of transverse momentum-dependent quark distribution functions (TMDs) for spin-one hadrons. Emphasis is placed on a description of these 3-dimensional distribution functions which is independent of any constraints on the spin quantization axis. We apply our covariant spin description to all nine leading-twist time-reversal even $\rho$ meson TMDs in the framework provided by the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, incorporating important aspects of quark confinement via the infrared cut-off in the proper-time regularization scheme. In particular, the behavior of the 3-dimensional TMDs in a tensor polarized spin-one hadron are illustrated. Sum rules and positivity constraints are discussed in detail. Results of particular interest include the finding that the tensor polarized TMDs -- associated with spin-one hadrons -- are very sensitive to quark orbital angular momentum, and that the TMDs associated with the quark operator $\gamma^+\boldsymbol{\gamma}_T\gamma_5$ would vanish were it not for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. In addition, we find that 44% of the $\rho$ meson's spin is carried by the orbital angular momentum of the quarks, and that the magnitude of the tensor polarized quark distribution function is about 30% of the unpolarized quark distribution. A qualitative comparison between our results for the tensor structure of a quark-antiquark bound state is made to previous experimental and theoretical results for the two-nucleon (deuteron) bound state., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures (updated to agree with journal version -- some changes in notation)

A class of Polyakov-loop-modified Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) models have been used to support a conjecture that numerical simulations of lattice-regularized quantum chromodynamics (QCD) defined with a chiral chemical potential can provide information about the existence and location of a critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram drawn in the plane spanned by baryon chemical potential and temperature. That conjecture is challenged by conflicts between the model results and analyses of the same problem using simulations of lattice-regularized QCD (lQCD) and well-constrained Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) studies. We find the conflict is resolved in favor of the lQCD and DSE predictions when both a physically-motivated regularization is employed to suppress the contribution of high-momentum quark modes in the definition of the effective potential connected with the PNJL models and the four-fermion coupling in those models does not react strongly to changes in the mean-field that is assumed to mock-up Polyakov loop dynamics. With the lQCD and DSE predictions thus confirmed, it seems unlikely that simulations of lQCD with $\mu_5>0$ can shed any light on a critical endpoint in the regular QCD phase diagram., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The separate quark flavour contributions to the pion and kaon valence quark distribution functions are studied, along with the corresponding electromagnetic form factors in the space-like region. The calculations are made using the solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the model of Nambu and Jona-Lasinio with proper-time regularization. Both the pion and kaon form factors and the valence quark distribution functions reproduce many of the features of the available empirical data. The larger mass if the strange quark naturally explains the empirical fact that the ratio $u_{K^+}(x)/u_{\pi^+}(x)$ drops below unity at large $x$, with a value of approximately $M^2_u/M_s^2$ as $x \to 1$. With regard to the elastic form factors we report a large flavour dependence, with the $u$-quark contribution to the kaon form factor being an order of magnitude smaller than that of the $s$-quark at large $Q^2$, which may be a sensitive measure of confinement effects in QCD. Surprisingly though, the total $K^+$ and $\pi^+$ form factors differ by only 10\%., Comment: 9 pages, 14 figures

Electromagnetic form factors of the baryon octet are studied using a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model which utilizes the proper-time regularization scheme to simulate aspects of colour confinement. In addition, the model also incorporates corrections to the dressed quarks from vector meson correlations in the t-channel and the pion cloud. Comparison with recent chiral extrapolations of lattice QCD results shows a remarkable level of consistency. For the charge radii we find the surprising result $r_{E}^p < r_{E}^{\Sigma^+}$ and $|r_{E}^n| < |r_{E}^{\Xi^0}|$, whereas the magnetic radii have a pattern largely consistent with a naive expectation based on the dressed quark masses., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

A confining, symmetry-preserving, Dyson-Schwinger equation treatment of a vector-vector contact interaction is used to formulate Faddeev equations for the nucleon and Delta-baryon in which the kernel involves dynamical dressed-quark exchange and whose solutions therefore provide momentum-dependent Faddeev amplitudes. These solutions are compared with those obtained in the static approximation and with a QCD-kindred formulation of the Faddeev kernel. They are also used to compute a range of nucleon properties, amongst them: the proton's sigma-term; the large Bjorken-x values of separate ratios of unpolarised and longitudinally-polarised valence u- and d-quark parton distribution functions; and the proton's tensor charges, which enable one to directly determine the effect of dressed-quark electric dipole moments (EDMs) on neutron and proton EDMs., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables. In light of the forthcoming high precision quasielastic electron scattering data from Jefferson Lab, it is timely for the various approaches to nuclear structure to make robust predictions for the associated response functions. With this in mind, we focus here on the longitudinal response function and the corresponding Coulomb sum rule for isospin-symmetric nuclear matter at various baryon densities. Using a quantum field-theoretic quark-level approach which preserves the symmetries of quantum chromodynamics, as well as exhibiting dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and quark confinement, we find a dramatic quenching of the Coulomb sum rule for momentum transfers $\left|\mathbf{q}\right| \gtrsim 0.5\,$GeV. The main driver of this effect lies in changes to the proton Dirac form factor induced by the nuclear medium. Such a dramatic quenching of the Coulomb sum rule was not seen in a recent quantum Monte Carlo calculation for carbon, suggesting that the Jefferson Lab data may well shed new light on the explicit role of QCD in nuclei., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Elastic electromagnetic form factors for the $\rho^+$ meson are calculated in a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model which incorporates quark confinement through the use of the proper-time regularization scheme. A comparison is made with recent lattice QCD results and previous quark model calculations for static quantities and the Sachs form factors. The results are qualitatively in good agreement with the lattice QCD calculations, with the exception of the quadrupole moment and corresponding form factor, which may be related to a lack of spherical symmetry on the lattice., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures

We employ a continuum approach to the three valence-quark bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory to predict a range of properties of the proton's radial excitation and thereby unify them with those of numerous other hadrons. Our analysis indicates that the nucleon's first radial excitation is the Roper resonance. It consists of a core of three dressed-quarks, which expresses its valence-quark content and whose charge radius is 80% larger than the proton analogue. That core is complemented by a meson cloud, which reduces the observed Roper mass by roughly 20%. The meson cloud materially affects long-wavelength characteristics of the Roper electroproduction amplitudes but the quark core is revealed to probes with $Q^2 \gtrsim 3 m_N^2$., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

The lightest baryon octet is studied within a covariant and confining Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. By solving the relativistic Faddeev equations including scalar and axialvector diquarks, we determine the masses and axial charges for \Delta S = 0 transitions. For the latter the degree of violation of SU(3) symmetry arising because of the strange spectator quark(s) is found to be up to 10%., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We compute nucleon and Delta elastic and transition form factors, and compare predictions made using a framework built upon a Faddeev equation kernel and interaction vertices that possess QCD-like momentum dependence with results obtained using a vector-vector contact-interaction. The comparison emphasises that experiment is sensitive to the momentum dependence of the running couplings and masses in the strong interaction sector of the Standard Model and highlights that the key to describing hadron properties is a veracious expression of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in the bound-state problem. Amongst the results we describe, the following are of particular interest: $G_E^p(Q^2)/G_M^p(Q^2)$ possesses a zero at $Q^2=9.5GeV^2$; any change in the interaction which shifts a zero in the proton ratio to larger $Q^2$ relocates a zero in $G_E^n(Q^2)/G_M^n(Q^2)$ to smaller $Q^2$; and there is likely a value of momentum transfer above which $G_E^n>G_E^p$. Regarding the $\Delta(1232)$-baryon, we find that, inter alia: the electric monopole form factor exhibits a zero; the electric quadrupole form factor is negative, large in magnitude, and sensitive to the nature and strength of correlations in the $\Delta(1232)$ Faddeev amplitude; and the magnetic octupole form factor is negative so long as rest-frame P- and D-wave correlations are included. In connection with the N-to-Delta transition, the momentum-dependence of the magnetic transition form factor, $G_M^\ast$, matches that of $G_M^n$ once the momentum transfer is high enough to pierce the meson-cloud; and the electric quadrupole ratio is a keen measure of diquark and orbital angular momentum correlations., Comment: 39 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables. Electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon in the space-like region are investigated within the framework of a covariant and confining Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The bound state amplitude of the nucleon is obtained as the solution of a relativistic Faddeev equation, where diquark correlations appear naturally as a consequence of the strong coupling in the colour $\bar{3}$ $qq$ channel. Pion degrees of freedom are included as a perturbation to the "quark-core" contribution obtained using the Poincar\'e covariant Faddeev amplitude. While no model parameters are fit to form factor data, excellent agreement is obtained with the empirical nucleon form factors (including the magnetic moments and radii) where pion loop corrections play a critical role for $Q^2 \lesssim 1\,$GeV$^2$. Using charge symmetry, the nucleon form factors can be expressed as proton quark sector form factors. The latter are studied in detail, leading, for example, to the conclusion that the $d$-quark sector of the Dirac form factor is much softer than the $u$-quark sector, a consequence of the dominance of scalar diquark correlations in the proton wave function. On the other hand, for the proton quark sector Pauli form factors we find that the effect of the pion cloud and axialvector diquark correlations overcomes the effect of scalar diquark dominance, leading to a larger $d$-quark anomalous magnetic moment and a form factor in the $u$-quark sector that is slightly softer than in the $d$-quark sector., Comment: 30 pages and 40 figures

We exploit a method introduced recently to determine parton distribution amplitudes (PDAs) from minimal information in order to obtain light-quark pseudoscalar and vector meson PDAs from the limited number of moments produced by numerical simulations of lattice-regularised QCD. Within errors, the PDAs of pseudoscalar and vector mesons constituted from the same valence quarks are identical; they are concave functions, whose dilation expresses the strength of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking; and SU(3)-flavour symmetry is broken nonperturbatively at the level of 10%. Notably, the appearance of precision in the lattice moments is misleading. The moments also exhibit material dependence on lattice volume, especially for the pion. Improvements need therefore be made before an accurate, unified picture of the light-front structure of light-quark pseudoscalar and vector mesons is revealed., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

The last five years have brought considerable progress in the study of the bound-state problem in continuum quantum field theory. We highlight a subset of that progress; viz., that made within the context of Dyson Schwinger equation analyses of cold, sparse hadrons. Our focus is primarily on advances in the reliable computation, explanation and prediction of quantities that are truly measurable; but we also review aspects of a new paradigm that has condensates contained within hadrons, and explain that the asymptotic form of parton distribution amplitudes and functions are practically unreachable with terrestrial facilities. Given the pace of expansion in experiment and improvement in theory, it appears possible that the next five years will bring profound growth in our store of knowledge about hadrons and nuclei., Comment: 103 pages, 34 figures. Predictions obtained with a confining, symmetry-preserving treatment of a vector-vector contact interaction at leading-order in a widely used truncation of QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations are presented for \Delta and \Omega baryon elastic form factors and the \gamma N -> \Delta transition form factors. This simple framework produces results that are practically indistinguishable from the best otherwise available, an outcome which highlights that the key to describing many features of baryons and unifying them with the properties of mesons is a veracious expression of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in the hadron bound-state problem. The following specific results are of particular interest. The \Delta elastic form factors are very sensitive to m_\Delta. Hence, given that the parameters which define extant simulations of lattice-regularised QCD produce \Delta-resonance masses that are very large, the form factors obtained therewith are a poor guide to properties of the \Delta(1232). Considering the \Delta-baryon's quadrupole moment, whilst all computations produce a negative value, the conflict between theoretical predictions entails that it is currently impossible to reach a sound conclusion on the nature of the \Delta-baryon's deformation in the infinite momentum frame. Results for analogous properties of the \Omega baryon are less contentious. In connection with the N->\Delta transition, the Ash-convention magnetic transition form factor falls faster than the neutron's magnetic form factor and nonzero values for the associated quadrupole ratios reveal the impact of quark orbital angular momentum within the nucleon and \Delta; and, furthermore, these quadrupole ratios do slowly approach their anticipated asymptotic limits., Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables

The proton is arguably the most fundamental of Nature's readily detectable building blocks. It is at the heart of every nucleus and has never been observed to decay. It is nevertheless a composite object, defined by its valence-quark content: u+u+d -- i.e., two up (u) quarks and one down (d) quark; and the manner by which they influence, inter alia, the distribution of charge and magnetisation within this bound-state. Much of novelty has recently been learnt about these distributions; and it now appears possible that the proton's momentum-space charge distribution possesses a zero. Experiments in the coming decade should answer critical questions posed by this and related advances; and we explain how such new information may assist in charting the origin and impact of key emergent phenomena within the strong interaction. Specifically, we show that the possible existence and location of a zero in the proton's electric form factor are a measure of nonperturbative features of the quark-quark interaction in the Standard Model, with particular sensitivity to the running of the dressed-quark mass., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We present results for dihadron fragmentation functions from the NJL-jet model evolved from the model scale to a typical experimental scale of $4 \mathrm{GeV}^2$. The numerical method used in this evolution is discussed in detail. The effect of evolution on the shapes of the dihadron fragmentation functions is discussed for a doubly favored process ($u \to \pi^+\pi^-$), as well as a singly favored ($u \to \pi^+K^-$) process involving light quarks. Finally, we explore the production of $K^+ K^-$ pairs from an initial $u$, $d$ or $s$ quark., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

We propose a new model of the nucleon in which quark-diquark configurations immersed in a pion cloud are treated in a manner consistent with Poincar\'e invariance. Using the model of Nambu and Jona-Lasinio to provide a microscopic description of both the structure of the nucleon and of the quark to hadron elementary fragmentation functions, we investigate the transverse momentum dependence of the unpolarized quark distributions in the nucleon and of the quark to pion and kaon fragmentation functions. The transverse momentum dependence of the fragmentation functions is determined within a Monte Carlo framework, with the notable result that the average $P_\perp^2$ of the produced kaons is significantly larger than that of the pions. We also find that $$ has a sizable $z$ dependence, in contrast with the naive Gaussian ansatz for the fragmentation functions. Diquark correlations in the nucleon give rise to a non-trivial flavor dependence in the unpolarized transverse momentum dependent quark distribution functions. The $$ of the quarks in the nucleon are also found to have a sizable $x$ dependence. Finally, these results are used as input to a Monte Carlo event generator for semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS), which is used to determine the average transverse momentum squared of the produced hadrons measured in SIDIS, namely $$. Again we find that the average $P_T^2$ of the produced kaons in SIDIS is significantly larger than that of the pions and in each case $\la P_T^2 \ra$ has a sizable $z$ dependence., Comment: 13 pages, 17 figures, v2: minor revisions to conform with the published version in Phys.Rev.D

A Dyson-Schwinger equation calculation of the light hadron spectrum, which correlates the masses of meson and baryon ground- and excited-states within a single framework, produces a description of the Roper resonance that corresponds closely with conclusions drawn recently by EBAC. Namely, the Roper is a particular type of radial excitation of the nucleon's dressed-quark core augmented by a material meson cloud component. Modern electron scattering experiments have determined the proton electric form factor, G_{Ep}(Q^2), to high precision. We utilize this data, represented by the different form factor parametrizations, to compute the third Zemach moment of the proton charge distribution. We find that existing data rule out a value of the third Zemach moment large enough to explain the current puzzle with the proton charge radius determined from the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen. This is in contrast with the recent claim of De Rujula [arXiv:1008.3861]., Comment: 3 pages, three figures

Two basic motivations for an upgraded JLab facility are the needs: to determine the essential nature of light-quark confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB); and to understand nucleon structure and spectroscopy in terms of QCD's elementary degrees of freedom. During the next ten years a programme of experiment and theory will be conducted that can address these questions.
