Traditional Chinese buildings serve as a carrier for the inheritance of traditional culture and national characteristics. In the context of rural revitalization, achieving the 3D reconstruction of traditional village buildings is a crucial technical approach to promoting rural planning, improving living environments, and establishing digital villages. However, traditional algorithms primarily target urban buildings, exhibiting limited adaptability and less ideal feature extraction performance for traditional residential buildings. As a result, guaranteeing the accuracy and reliability of 3D models for different types of traditional buildings remains challenging. In this paper, taking Jingping Village in Western Hunan as an example, we propose a method that combines multiple algorithms based on the slope segmentation of the roof to extract feature lines. Firstly, the VDVI and CSF algorithms are used to extract the building and roof point clouds based on the MVS point cloud. Secondly, according to roof features, village buildings are classified, and a 3D roof point cloud is projected into 2D regular grid data. Finally, the roof slope is segmented via slope direction, and internal and external feature lines are obtained after refinement through Canny edge detection and Hough straight line detection. The results indicate that the CSF algorithm can effectively extract the roofs of I-shaped, L-shaped, and U-shaped traditional buildings. The accuracy of roof surface segmentation based on slope exceeds 99.6%, which is significantly better than the RANSAC algorithm and the region segmentation algorithm. This method is capable of efficiently extracting the characteristic lines of roofs in low-rise buildings within traditional villages. Terrestrial LiDAR (light detection and ranging) has been used to quantify micro-topographic changes using high-density 3D point clouds in which extracting the ground surface is susceptible to off-terrain (OT) points. Various filtering algorithms are available in classifying ground and OT points, but additional research is needed to choose and implement a suitable algorithm for a given surface. This paper assesses the performance of three filtering algorithms in classifying terrestrial LiDAR point clouds: a cloth simulation filter (CSF), a modified slope-based filter (MSBF), and a random forest (RF) classifier, based on a typical use-case in quantifying soil erosion and surface denudation. A hillslope plot was scanned before and after removing vegetation to generate a test dataset of ground and OT points. Each algorithm was then tested against this dataset with various parameters/settings to obtain the highest performance. CSF produced the best classification with a Kappa value of 0.86, but its performance is highly influenced by the 'time-step' parameter. MSBF had the highest precision of 0.94 for ground point classification but the highest Kappa value of only 0.62. RF produced balanced classifications with the highest Kappa value of 0.75. This work provides valuable information in optimizing the parameters of the filtering algorithms to improve their performance in detecting micro-topographic changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High resolution terrestrial laser scanning data (TLS; terrestrial LiDAR) provide an excellent background for quantitative resource estimation through the comparative analysis of topographic surface changes. However, unlike airborne LiDAR data, which is usually provided as classified and contains a class of ground points, raw TLS data include all of the points of the scanned space within the specified scanner range. In effect, utilizing the latter data to estimate the volume of the resource by the differential analysis of digital elevation models (DEMs) requires the data to be specially prepared, i.e., separating from the point cloud only the data that represent the relevant class. In the case of natural resources, e.g., mineral resources, the class is represented by ground points. This paper presents the results that were obtained by differential analysis of high resolution DEMs (DEM of difference (DoD) method) using TLS data that were processed both manually (operator noise removal) and with the use of the automatic Cloth Simulation Filter (CSF) algorithm. Three different time pairs of DoD data were analyzed for a potential gravel-cobble deposit area of 45,444 m2, which was located at the bottom of the mouth section of the Scott River in south-east Svalbard. It was found that the applied method of ground point classification had very little influence on the errors in the range of estimating volumetric parameters of the mineral resources and measurement uncertainty. Moreover, it was shown that the point cloud density had an influence on the CSF filtering efficiency and spatial distribution of errors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
