Abstract

Organic mixed ionic‐electronic conductors (OMIEC) have emerged as pivotal materials in organic bioelectronics, particularly when integrated into organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). Conducting polymer‐based devices have indeed demonstrated their capability to transduce biological signals into amplified output signals, harnessing the high transconductance of OECTs. The OECT operating principle and sensing capability strongly depend on ion‐conjugated backbone coupling: the dual nature of OMIECs, i.e. ion‐conductor and electron/hole‐conductor, presents an intrinsic interface in the bulk of the thin film across which transduction of ionic signals into electronic signals and vice versa occurs. Recent works have shown how selective sodium and potassium detection can be achieved by direct chemical modification of the polymer. Such modifications introduce ligands with affinity for the cations of interest as substituents on the polymer chain. The present work explores the integration of specifically modified conducting polymers into OECT channels, offering selectivity for zinc cations. Zinc fluxes are crucial in various biological processes, and their reliable detection, especially at low concentrations, is an important challenge. By electropolymerizing a thiophene‐based trimer, modified with a dipicolylamine (DPA) substituent, a conducting polymer‐based OECT is obtained that can selectively detect Zn2+ in the 10−6 to 10−3 mol L−1 concentration range in physiological buffers. Abstract

Hierarchical self-assembly arranges nanostructures at different length scales. It gradually becomes an effective method of fabricating artificial metamaterials from composite nanostructures tailored for a particular response. Hierarchical self-assembly overcomes shortcomings of "top-down" methods by significantly reducing fabrication time and making it possible to form bulk materials. Here we report an application of hierarchical self-assembly of metal nanoparticles for the creation of the first isotropic optical metamaterial with strong artificial magnetism in blue light. We have used colloidal self-assembly to create artificial "nanomolecules" that generate the desired magnetic response and microfluidic self-assembly to produce a bulk metastructure. We demonstrate that the magnetic response of the final material is accurately described by an isotropic magnetic permeability that satisfies the principle of locality. Our approach unlocks the fabrication of large volumes of composite nanomaterials. Moreover, the spatial disorder inherent to this "bottom-up" method holds the key to solving the non-locality problem. The technique can be readily extended to the future generations of low-loss optical metamaterials made of dielectric nano-blocks to bypass the limitations of optical losses associated with plasmonic resonances in noble metals., Comment: Main article:10 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

Organic π‐conjugated semiconductors (OCSs) have recently emerged as a promising alternative to traditional inorganic materials for photocatalysis. However, the aggregation of OCSs in photocatalytic aqueous solution caused by self‐assembly, which closely relates to the photocatalytic activity, has not yet been studied. Here, the relationship between the aggregation of 4,7‐Bis(thiophen‐2‐yl) benzothiadiazole (TBT) and the photocatalytic activity was systematically investigated by introducing and varying the position of methyl side chains on the two peripheral thiophene units. Experimental and theoretical results indicated that the introduction of ‐CH3 group at the 3‐position of TBT resulted in the smallest size and best crystallinity of aggregates compared to that of TBT, 4‐ and 5‐positions. As a result, TBT‐3 exhibited an excellent photocatalytic activity towards H2 evolution, ascribed to the shorten charge carrier transport distance and solid long‐range order. Abstract

The rise of gas-sensing applications and markets has led to microwave sensors associated to polymer-based sensitive materials gaining a lot of attention, as they offer the possibility to target a large variety of gases (as polymers can be easily functionalised) at ultra-low power and wirelessly (which is a major concern in the Internet of Things). A two-channel microstrip sensor with one resonator coated with 1,2 epoxybutane-functionalised poly(ethyleneimine) (EB-PEI) and the other left bare was designed and fabricated for humidity sensing. The sensor, characterised under controlled laboratory conditions, showed exponential response to RH between 0 and 100%, which is approximated to −1.88 MHz/RH% (−0.03 dB/RH%) and −8.24 MHz/RH% (−0.171 dB/RH%) in the RH ranges of 30–80% and 80–100%, respectively. This is the first reported use of EB-PEI for humidity sensing, and performances, especially at high humidity level (RH > 80%), as compared with transducer working frequencies, are better than the state of the art. When further tested in real outdoor conditions, the sensor shows satisfying performances, with 4.2 %RH mean absolute error. Most importantly, we demonstrate that the sensor is selective to relative humidity alone, irrespective of the other environmental variables acquired during the campaign (O3, NO, NO2, CO, CO2, and Temperature). The sensitivities obtained outdoors in the ranges of 50–70% and 70–100% RH (−0.61 MHz/%RH and −3.68 MHz/%RH, respectively) were close to lab results (−0.95 MHz/%RH and −3.51 MHz/%RH, respectively). Abstract

International audience; An electropolymerized ion selective PEDOT analog is presented in this communication. Poly-(2-phenyl-15crown-5-(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene)-amine) (PEDOT-Crown15) showed excellent electrochemical stability with a fast electron transfer (ΔEp = 50 mV). In comparison with unmodified PEDOT, a faster change from isolating to conducting state was observed. This is attributed to the formation of a well-ordered internal polymer matrix, caused by the aniline-Crown15 moiety. In-situ electrochemical conductance measurements in the presence of different monovalent cations showed high affinity for Na + ions, as evidenced by the decrease of the conductance of the polymer in comparison with K + and Li +. This selectivity is attributed to a limitation of the charge hopping conductance

Abstract

During the last decades, tremendous efforts have been carried out to develop flexible electronics for a vast array of applications. Among all different applications investigated in this area, flexible displays have gained significant attention, being a vital part of large-area devices, portable systems and electronic labels etc electrophoretic (EP) ink displays have outstanding properties such as a superior optical switch contrast and low power consumption, besides being compatible with flexible electronics. However, the EP ink technology requires an active matrix-addressing scheme to enable exclusive addressing of individual pixels. EP ink pixels cannot be incorporated in low cost and easily manufactured passive matrix circuits due to the lack of threshold voltage and nonlinearity, necessities to provide addressability. Here, we suggest a simple method to introduce nonlinearity and threshold voltage in EP ink display cells in order to make them passively addressable. Our method exploits the nonlinearity of an organic ferroelectric capacitor that introduces passive addressability in display cells. The organic ferroelectric material poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) is here chosen because of its simple manufacturing protocol and good polarizability. We demonstrate that a nonlinear EP cell with bistable states can be produced by depositing a P(VDF-TrFE) film on the bottom electrode of the display cell. The P(VDF-TrFE) capacitor and the EP ink cell are separately characterized in order to match the surface charge at their respective interfaces and to achieve and optimize bistable operation of display pixels.
