Abstract

The article is the final part of the three-part study on the variations in the number of bristles in the female frenulum of moths of the Tortricinae subfamily. It notes that the number of bristles in females varies from one to eight and often is asymmetrical in 19% of analyzed specimens. It presents the bristle counts in the frenulums of groups such as Epitymbiini, Orthocomotis Dognin, and the Mictopsichia Hübner groups, and suggests that the number of bristles may be related to moth size.

Abstract

A phylogenetic analysis was conducted on the moth tribe Cnephasiini based on 83 morphological characters of adults (63 binary and 20 multistate). The analysis included 26 species representing 20 genera, plus two outgroup representatives of the tribe Tortricini. The cladistic analysis resulted in the 10 most parsimonious trees. The tribe Cnephasiini was recovered as monophyletic; the genusCnephasiawas not recovered as monophyletic; the New WorldDecodesclustered with the primarily Old WorldCnephasia;Oxypteronis best treated as monotypic (with the single speciespalmoni), andAmphicoecia adamana,Oporopsamma dunariaandO. wertheimsteinishould be assigned to a different genus;PropriomorphaandXerocnephasiawere the most basal groups;Exapate duratellaandEpicnephasia mongolicawere recognised as sister-groups; andKawabeiawas closest toTortricodes. Abstract

The 22 species of the tortricid tribe Cnephasiini recorded from Iran are reviewed. Cnephasia razowskii, sp. n., is described and illustrated. Five species, i.e., C. communana (Herrich & Schäffer, 1851), C. genitalana Pierce & Metcalfe, 1922, C. tianshanica Filipjev, 1934, C. kenneli Obraztsov, 1956 and Eana incanana (Stephens, 1852), are newly reported for the fauna of Iran. New distributional data are presented for all other species. The previously unknown females of C. facetana Kennel, 1901 and C. kenneli are described and illustrated. A re-description of the female genitalia of C. grandis Osthelder, 1938 is provided owing to its poor original description.
