Abstract

This paper presents a method to estimate parameters of a 3-phase line segment using PMU data. The novelty of this method is that it is capable of giving accurate estimates even in the presence of non-calibrated instrument transformers at both ends of the line whose ratio and phase correction coefficients are unknown. To do so, this method adds extra parameters in the regression model. These added parameters account for the errors present in the non-calibrated instrument transformers. In case the instrument transformers are calibrated at one end of the line, then the correction coefficients at the other end could also be estimated. The presented method does not require reversal of current flow direction in the line as a necessary condition. Results from simulated and laboratory experiments are presented to show the efficacy of the method. A discussion about analyzing the obtained results is also presented.

Abstract

An analysis of current transients caused by the operation of a nearby device in an industrial plant is presented in the paper. The source of current transients in the factory lighting system was traced to the operation of the nearby six-pulse AC/DC converter. To determine the nature of the interaction, a measurement was done with a storage oscilloscope. Also, laboratory experiments on one lamp were conducted. It was possible to exclude the presence of a parallel resonance on this site. It was concluded that transients are caused by voltage notches in certain working regimes of the six-pulse converter. Possible solutions to the problem are separating the supplies of the converter and the lighting installation, filtering, or adding additional line reactance.

Abstract

With the introduction of smart meters, dynamic pricing, and home energy management systems, residential customers are able to react to changes in electricity prices. In an unbundled market, the energy supplier and the network operator may have conflicting interests with respect to demand response (DR) programs. As customer participation is essential to a well-functioning DR program, it is needed to assess which DR programs offer most customer benefits. Two DR program options are analyzed for low-voltage feeders: a program from the energy supplier based on the electricity price, and a DR program from the network operator based on the loading of the network. Depending on the network topology the benefits can change significantly between the two DR programs. DR from an energy supplier point of view might induce undervoltages which lead to additional network reinforcements, while load shifting from a network point of view can generate higher electricity cost.
