1. A Heuristically Modified FP-Tree for Ontology Learning with Applications in Education

Abstract

We propose a heuristically modified FP-Tree for ontology learning from text. Unlike previous research, for concept extraction, we use a regular expression parser approach widely adopted in compiler construction, i.e., deterministic finite automata (DFA). Thus, the concepts are extracted from unstructured documents. For ontology learning, we use a frequent pattern mining approach and employ a rule mining heuristic function to enhance its quality. This process does not rely on predefined lexico-syntactic patterns, thus, it is applicable for different subjects. We employ the ontology in a question-answering system for students' content-related questions. For validation, we used textbook questions/answers and questions from online course forums. Subject experts rated the quality of the system's answers on a subset of questions and their ratings were used to identify the most appropriate automatic semantic text similarity metric to use as a validation metric for all answers. The Latent Semantic Analysis was identified as the closest to the experts' ratings. We compared the use of our ontology with the use of Text2Onto for the question-answering system and found that with our ontology 80% of the questions were answered, while with Text2Onto only 28.4% were answered, thanks to the finer grained hierarchy our approach is able to produce.

2. Towards Gathering Initial Requirements of Developing a Mobile Service to Support Informal Learning at Cultural Heritage Sites

Abstract

Informal learning allows learners to be in charge of their own learning process instead of being a content consumer. Harnessing mobile technology in informal learning field could help learners in taking a learning opportunity whenever they need either individually or in a group. This paper presents a small-scale study to investigate how people may use mobile technology for learning purposes in cultural heritage contexts. A focus group approach was used to capture preliminary results of user requirements. Based on these results, a scenario-based method was used to reflect a tangible picture regarding how people interact with mobile services. This study serves as an initial step of the series of gathering user requirements in developing a mobile location-based learning service. [For the full proceedings, see ED562093.]

6. Predicting Learning-Related Emotions from Students' Textual Classroom Feedback via Twitter

Abstract

Teachers/lecturers typically adapt their teaching to respond to students' emotions, e.g. provide more examples when they think the students are confused. While getting a feel of the students' emotions is easier in small settings, it is much more difficult in larger groups. In these larger settings textual feedback from students could provide information about learning-related emotions that students experience. Prediction of emotions from text, however, is known to be a difficult problem due to language ambiguity. While prediction of general emotions from text has been reported in the literature, very little attention has been given to prediction of learning-related emotions. In this paper we report several experiments for predicting emotions related to learning using machine learning techniques and n-grams as features, and discuss their performance. The results indicate that some emotions can be distinguished more easily then others. [For complete proceedings, see ED560503.]

41. Design and Evaluation of a Case-Based System for Modelling Exploratory Learning Behavior of Math Generalization

Abstract

Exploratory learning environments (ELEs) promote a view of learning that encourages students to construct and/or explore models and observe the effects of modifying their parameters. The freedom given to learners in this exploration context leads to a variety of learner approaches for constructing models and makes modelling of learner behavior a challenging task. To address this issue, we propose a learner modelling mechanism for monitoring learners' actions when constructing/exploring models by modelling sequences of actions reflecting different strategies in solving a task. This is based on a modified version of case-based reasoning for problems with multiple solutions. In our formulation, approaches to explore the task are represented as sequences of simple cases linked by temporal and dependency relations, which are mapped to the learners' behavior in the system by means of appropriate similarity metrics. This paper presents the development and validation of the modelling mechanism. The model was validated in the context of an ELE for mathematical generalisation using data from classroom sessions and pedagogically-driven learning scenarios.

Abstract

User modelling in Exploratory Learning Environments (ELEs) is an emerging field with several challenges to be addressed. Due to the freedom given to learners, the amount of information generated is very large, making the modelling process very challenging. Consequently, only relevant information should be used in the user modelling process. This, however, leads to other challenges such as identification of relevant information, finding an optimal knowledge representation and defining an inference mechanism by which this knowledge is used in diagnosing the learner. This thesis addresses the challenges of user modelling in ELEs by monitoring learners' behaviour and taking into account only relevant actions in the context of an ELE for the domain of mathematical generalisation. An iterative approach was used, in line with the iterative design of the ELE. The modelling mechanism employed a modified version of Case-based Reasoning (CBR) and was evaluated using pedagogical scenarios and data from simulated and real students. This approach has the advantage of storing only relevant information and allows learner diagnosis during as well as at the end of a task. The user model was further exploited to support learning related activities, such as prioritising feedback and grouping for collaboration. For feedback prioritisation, a mechanism based on Multi-criteria Decision Making was developed and tested with the help of educational experts. The grouping for collaboration approach was inspired from Group Technology, a method from cellular manufacturing systems, and its testing showed it produces meaningful groups. Both the feedback prioritisation and the grouping for collaboration mechanisms propose solutions that are particularly relevant for ELEs by considering pertinent criteria for this type of learning. To ensure optimal coverage of the knowledge base, the user modelling approach was enhanced with adaptive mechanisms for expanding the knowledge base, which was tested on real and simulated data. This approach ensures that learner diagnostic is possible when the initial knowledge base is small and/or new behaviours are encountered over time.
