7. Review of the syn-rift to early post-rift depositional systems of the Cretaceous Mauléon rift: sedimentary record of continental crust hyperextension and mantle denudation (Western Pyrenees)

Abstract

The Mauléon Basin, in the northwestern Pyrenean Belt, is related to Early Cretaceous rifting and mantle denudation. Here we review the evolution of depositional systems in the Mauléon Rift Basin during Albian and Cenomanian time. This review includes the lithostratigraphy, regional distribution, boundaries, age and facies sedimentology of the basin’s syn-rift formations and their members. We construct paleogeographic maps to elucidate (1) the 3D distribution of sedimentary facies and depositional systems during the Albian and Cenomanian from the Iberian proximal margin to the hyperextended domain and (2) the link between major extensional structures and sedimentation during rifting and mantle denudation. The Mauléon Rift was supplied during most of the Albian by sediments from the Iberian proximal margin. The southern margin had a steep and abrupt topographic boundary related to a northward crustal rollover along the south-dipping Saint-Palais detachment. This feature controlled the deposition of coarse-grained turbidites at the base of the margin that abruptly gave way to low-density turbidites, then deep-basin deposits in the hyperextended domain. During uppermost Albian to Early Cenomanian time, mantle denudation occurred in the eastern Mauléon Basin and the vergence of the detachment systems reversed. Minor debris-flow deposits formed at the foot of fault scarps associated with the newly formed north-dipping detachments. Elsewhere, sediment from deltaic systems to the west in the Saint-Jean-de-Luz area deposited low-density turbidites in the hyperextended domain. During the post-rift stage, the flux of coarse sediment from the detachment footwall gradually declined as deformation waned, and low-density turbidites expanded onto the hyperextended domain from the European Upper Cretaceous carbonate platform. These paleogeographic reconstructions, in addition to offering a synthetic view of the evolution of sedimentary environments during rifting, offer new insight into the post-rifting exhumation of the lower crust and mantle.

11. Vertical strain partitioning in hot Variscan crust: Syn-convergence escape of the Pyrenees in the Iberian-Armorican syntax

Abstract

A new structural map of the Paleozoic crust of the Pyrenees based on an extensive compilation and new kinematic data allows for the evaluation of the mechanical coupling between the upper and lower crust of the abnormally hot foreland of the Variscan orogen of SW Europe. We document partitioning between coeval lower crustal lateral flow and upper crustal thickening between 310 and 290 Ma under an overall dextral transpressive regime. Partitioning also involved syn-convergence transtensional gneiss domes emplacement during this period. Late orogen-normal shortening of the domes and strain localization in steep crustal-scale transpressive shear zones reflects increasing coupling between the lower crust and the upper crust. The combination of dextral transpression and eastward flow in the Pyrenees results from the shortening and lateral escape of a hot buoyant crust along the inner northern limb of the closing Cantabrian orocline at the core of the Iberian-Armorican arc between ca. 305 and 295 Ma. Delamination or thermal erosion of the lithosphere enhanced orocline closure and explains (1) the switch from crust- to mantle-derived magmatism in the Iberian-Armorican arc and (2) the abnormally hot and soft character of the Pyrenean crust that escaped the closing syntax.

International audience; The French Massif Central (FMC) forms the hinterland of the west-European Variscan belt and was subject to numerous tectonic and metamorphic events from Devonian to Permian times. The accreted tectonic units belonging to Gondwana and Laurussia were variably involved in subduction, nappe stacking and syn-to post-orogenic extension. Besides, plutons and migmatites showing syn-collision crust melting are very common in the Variscan belt. Such orogenic evolution implies that the resulting finite structure likely reflects the interference between fabrics formed at different stages of the orogenic cycle with different degrees of overprinting, depending on e.g. the spatial strain gradients, lithologies, structural level or partial melting grade. We present a model of finite strainfield of the western FMC based of the analysis/interpolation of ductile and brittle fabrics, at regional to local scale, using geostatistics. Ductile fabrics within autochthonous units and syn-collisional plutons are poorly disturbed and reflect the transition from syn-thickening to extensional lateral flow of the partially molten mid-lower crust. In contrast, allochtonous units are affected by numerous perturbations including polyphased ductile shearing, folding and faulting inducing local bloc tilting and rotations. Taking into account the overprint of late tectonic events, we show that early fabrics related to High Pressure metamorphism or nappes' stacking have suffered intense reorientations. The finite trend of the related lineations L1 must be treated with extreme caution and may not reflect the original direction of stretching and shearing that occurred during the initial compressional stages. Taking into account i) the spatial distribution and amount of reorientation of these D1 fabrics and ii) the deconvolution of these disturbances, we propose that:-The high dispersion of lineation trend can be simply explained by passive rotations, during late isoclinal folding, rather than two superposed tectonic phases, as previously inferred.-The allochtonous units formed one single tectonic unit.-This D1 event looks related to the exhumation of the subducted continental crust due to partial melting-The formation of Variscan orogenic prism in western FMC only results of continuous south-directed thrusting rather than a switch from NE-SW to NW-SE thrusting.

Abstract

Estimating structural inheritance in orogens is critical to understanding the manner in which plate convergence is accommodated. The Pyrenean belt, which developed in Late Cretaceous to Paleogene times, was affected by Cretaceous rifting and Variscan orogeny. Here we combine a structural and petrological study of the Axial Zone in the Central Pyrenees to discuss structural inheritance. Low-grade Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks were affected by a Variscan transpressional event that produced successively: (1) regional-scale folds; (2) isoclinal folding, steep pervasive cleavage and vertical stretching, synchronous with peak metamorphism; (3) strain localization into ductile reverse shear zones. The persistence of a relatively flat envelope for the Paleozoic sedimentary pile and Variscan isograds, and the absence of Alpine crustal-scale faults in the core of the Axial Zone, suggests that the Axial Zone constitutes a large Variscan structural unit preserved during Pyrenean orogeny. This configuration seems to be inherited from Cretaceous rifting, which led to the individualization of a large continental block (future Axial Zone) against a hyper-extended domain along the North Pyrenean Fault zone. This study places the currently prevailing model of Pyrenean belt deformation in a new perspective and has important implications for crustal evolution and inheritance in mountain belts more generally.
