Between April 15 and June 14, 1993, Archaeological Research Services, Inc. performed a cultural resources survey of State Route 88 (the Apache Trail). The right-of-way varies from 66 to 200 feet, but construction as-builts were not available. Therefore, the Arizona Department of Transportation requested that a 200 foot wide right-of-way be surveyed for the entire project length unless clearly marked property boundaries or other right-of-way indications were present. The 17.5 mile long survey corridor crosses lands owned by the Arizona Department of Transportation, and sections of Arizona Department of Transportation right-of-way across Bureau of Land Management lands. That segment of State Route 88 on Tonto National Forest lands was constructed through the provisions of a Special Use Permit issued to the Arizona Department of Transportation by Tonto National Forest. The survey was conducted under the conditions and authority of a Tonto National Forest special use permit issued to Archaeological Research Services, Inc. on 2/17/93, Arizona State Museum general permit number 93-11, and Bureau of Land Management permit number AZ-000054 issued 10/13/90 (fieldwork authorization number PDO-93-5, 3/23/93). The project area encompasses approximately 424.24 acres, of which approximately, 371.21 were actually surveyed when the existing paved surface of State Route 88 is excluded. The Arizona Department of Transportation requested the survey (Arizona Department of Transportation Project No. STP-952-4(1), Tracs PN 195 H3275 01C) in anticipation of a proposed pavement preservation project. Archaeological Research Services performed a Class III (Intensive Field Inventory) survey in order to locate and record any cultural resources that could be disturbed as a result of the proposed undertaking. This study provides descriptions and National Register eligibility evaluations for cultural resources encountered during the survey. As a result of the survey, 22 archaeological sites (4 previously recorded, 18 newly recorded) and 49 isolated artifact occurrences or cultural features were recorded (or rerecorded or relocated). This is the second revision of this document, with earlier versions completed 29 June 1993 and 15 November 1994.

The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation), United States Department of the Interior, was in the initial stages of the Water Management Project designed to bring Central Arizona Project water to the Gila River Indian Community (GRIC). Under terms of a contract signed in 1992 with the GRIC, facilities designed and constructed by Reclamation would deliver 173,000 acre-feet of water annually onto the reservation. Federal law mandates consideration of potential impacts of such projects upon cultural resources and requires that necessary and appropriate steps be taken to mitigate those impacts. In accordance with these laws, Reclamation did a complete inventory of all cultural resources that may fall within the project area. Data resulting from this inventory provided the basis for assessment of the significance of the resources and for the design of plans to mitigate potential impacts to them. Two survey areas in which a water delivery system and associated features (such as dikes) will be constructed were identified by Reclamation. Broad survey areas were defined so the location of eligible sites would be known before specific project design began. In total, 180 sites were identified and recorded during survey. These sites include possible Archaic period materials, a wide range of prehistoric Hohokam site types representing all periods of the Hohokam sequence, possible Protohistoric manifestations, and numerous Historic Pima sites of varying ages. The report consists of two volumes. Volume 1 contains background information; consideration of survey and recording methods; analyses, evaluation, and interpretation of collected data; and recommendations for future treatment of discovered sites. Volume 2 contains site descriptions.

Archaeological Consulting Services, Ltd. (ACS) conducted a cultural resources survey on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community for a proposed landfill site. The survey, requested by Terry Leonard of the SRPMIC, was undertaken to identify and assess cultural resources that might be impacted by the development of the landfill. Twenty-three sites were identified, 18 prehistoric and five historic. Nine of the prehistoric sites represent lithic scatters, four are artifact scatters, and five are canal alignments. Of the historic sites, four consist of trash scatters and one is a historic road alignment. Nine prehistoric and nine historic isolated finds were recorded.

The Salt River Project (SRP) and Arizona Public Service Company (APS) constructed three transmission lines along a portion of the Beeline Highway on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC). SRP proposed to build a new line that connects the Pinnacle Peak, Brandow, and Papago Buttes substations. At the same time, APS proposed to realign two existing transmission lines and move them out of the Salt River channel and onto the north terrace above the river. Prior to construction, Archaeological Consulting Services Ltd. (ACS) was contracted to perform cultural resource investigations for both the SRP and APS portions of the project. A total of 13 identified sites were evaluated in 1984 as significant and, as such, potentially eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Not all of these sites would be affected by the proposed transmission line development however. The recommendations of the studies were: (1) both SRP and APS should work to minimize adverse effects by carefully designing pole and access locations, and (2) a data recovery program to negate any adverse effects of the proposed development project should be prepared and implemented. The data recovery work was performed under the authority of the SRPMIC and an ARPA permit from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Phoenix Area Office (BIA) (permit No. ACS/SR/PAO/0001A). Artifacts and notes were to be curated by the SRPMIC.

15 mi of Extra High Voltage transmission line corridor, 2 mi of access road, and 0.9 mi of 115kV transmission line from the Silverking Substation were surveyed for archaeological resources by the Museum of Northern Arizona in April, 1978. Twelve prehistoric and historic Anglo-American affiliation archaeological sites were identified along the EHV corridor between the Silverking Substation and the Tonto National Forest boundary. An isolated recent feature, not given a site designation, was found on the proposed access road alignment. No sites were found on the 115kV alignment. The report describes the survey and its results and makes detailed archaeological clearance recommendations for the surveyed impact areas. Archaeological clearance is recommended for all surveyed areas except for the actual areas of the 12 recorded sites in the EHV corridor.

The Museum of Northern Arizona conducted archaeological investigations at two sites along the Palo Verde to Westwing Transmission System, northwest of Phoenix, Arizona. NA15,137 is an extensive Hohokam sherd and lithic scatter dating to the late Colonial and Sedentary Periods. The remains indicate a seasonal occupation with an agricultural subsistence base. NA15,142 is the remains of a late 1920s to early 1930s homestead. Recovered material and archival research confirm these dates. Apparently the homestead was only briefly occupied. There were no permanent structures and only a limited amount of artifactual material.

As a result of the Salt River Project consultant's meeting on June 18, 1974, additional, more current information on the Arizona Station Project was made available to the Museum of Northern Arizona. Because of this, it was decided that the archaeological recommendations for the project should be reviewed and re-submitted. This report discusses the new developments and presents the basis for conclusions made regarding the archaeological assessments.
