Abstract

Large-scale low-background detectors are increasingly used in rare-event searches as experimental collaborations push for enhanced sensitivity. However, building such detectors, in practice, creates an abundance of radioassay data especially during the conceptual phase of an experiment when hundreds of materials are screened for radiopurity. A tool is needed to manage and make use of the radioassay screening data to quantitatively assess detector design options. We have developed a Materials Database Application for the nEXO experiment to serve this purpose. This paper describes this database, explains how it functions, and discusses how it streamlines the design of the experiment.

Abstract

Liquid xenon time projection chambers are promising detectors to search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0$\nu \beta \beta$), due to their response uniformity, monolithic sensitive volume, scalability to large target masses, and suitability for extremely low background operations. The nEXO collaboration has designed a tonne-scale time projection chamber that aims to search for 0$\nu \beta \beta$ of \ce{^{136}Xe} with projected half-life sensitivity of $1.35\times 10^{28}$~yr. To reach this sensitivity, the design goal for nEXO is $\leq$1\% energy resolution at the decay $Q$-value ($2458.07\pm 0.31$~keV). Reaching this resolution requires the efficient collection of both the ionization and scintillation produced in the detector. The nEXO design employs Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) to detect the vacuum ultra-violet, 175 nm scintillation light of liquid xenon. This paper reports on the characterization of the newest vacuum ultra-violet sensitive Fondazione Bruno Kessler VUVHD3 SiPMs specifically designed for nEXO, as well as new measurements on new test samples of previously characterised Hamamatsu VUV4 Multi Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs). Various SiPM and MPPC parameters, such as dark noise, gain, direct crosstalk, correlated avalanches and photon detection efficiency were measured as a function of the applied over voltage and wavelength at liquid xenon temperature (163~K). The results from this study are used to provide updated estimates of the achievable energy resolution at the decay $Q$-value for the nEXO design.

Abstract

We study a possible calibration technique for the nEXO experiment using a $^{127}$Xe electron capture source. nEXO is a next-generation search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) that will use a 5-tonne, monolithic liquid xenon time projection chamber (TPC). The xenon, used both as source and detection medium, will be enriched to 90% in $^{136}$Xe. To optimize the event reconstruction and energy resolution, calibrations are needed to map the position- and time-dependent detector response. The 36.3 day half-life of $^{127}$Xe and its small $Q$-value compared to that of $^{136}$Xe $0\nu\beta\beta$ would allow a small activity to be maintained continuously in the detector during normal operations without introducing additional backgrounds, thereby enabling in-situ calibration and monitoring of the detector response. In this work we describe a process for producing the source and preliminary experimental tests. We then use simulations to project the precision with which such a source could calibrate spatial corrections to the light and charge response of the nEXO TPC., Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

The ability of deep neural networks to learn complex data relations and representations is established nowadays, but it generally relies on large sets of training data. This work explores a "piece-specific" autoencoding scheme, in which a low-dimensional autoencoder is trained to learn a latent/compressed representation specific to a given song, which can then be used to infer the song structure. Such a model does not rely on supervision nor annotations, which are well-known to be tedious to collect and often ambiguous in Music Structure Analysis. We report that the proposed unsupervised auto-encoding scheme achieves the level of performance of supervised state-of-the-art methods with 3 seconds tolerance when using a Log Mel spectrogram representation on the RWC-Pop dataset., 4 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. 14. Identifiability of Complete Dictionary Learning

Abstract

Sparse component analysis (SCA), also known as complete dictionary learning, is the following problem: Given an input matrix $M$ and an integer $r$, find a dictionary $D$ with $r$ columns and a matrix $B$ with $k$-sparse columns (that is, each column of $B$ has at most $k$ non-zero entries) such that $M \approx DB$. A key issue in SCA is identifiability, that is, characterizing the conditions under which $D$ and $B$ are essentially unique (that is, they are unique up to permutation and scaling of the columns of $D$ and rows of $B$). Although SCA has been vastly investigated in the last two decades, only a few works have tackled this issue in the deterministic scenario, and no work provides reasonable bounds in the minimum number of samples (that is, columns of $M$) that leads to identifiability. In this work, we provide new results in the deterministic scenario when the data has a low-rank structure, that is, when $D$ is (under)complete. While previous bounds feature a combinatorial term $r \choose k$, we exhibit a sufficient condition involving $\mathcal{O}(r^3/(r-k)^2)$ samples that yields an essentially unique decomposition, as long as these data points are well spread among the subspaces spanned by $r-1$ columns of $D$. We also exhibit a necessary lower bound on the number of samples that contradicts previous results in the literature when $k$ equals $r-1$. Our bounds provide a drastic improvement compared to the state of the art, and imply for example that for a fixed proportion of zeros (constant and independent of $r$, e.g., 10\% of zero entries in $B$), one only requires $\mathcal{O}(r)$ data points to guarantee identifiability., 19 pages, 2 figures, new title, added references and discussions

Abstract

To ensure interpretability of extracted sources in tensor decomposition, we introduce in this paper a dictionary-based tensor canonical polyadic decomposition which enforces one factor to belong exactly to a known dictionary. A new formulation of sparse coding is proposed which enables high dimensional tensors dictionary-based canonical polyadic decomposition. The benefits of using a dictionary in tensor decomposition models are explored both in terms of parameter identifiability and estimation accuracy. 39. Collaborative practice and patient satisfaction: impact and selected outcomes.

Abstract

The Collaborative Practice was a demonstration project sponsored by the Hartford Hospital Administration, and the Departments of Medicine and Nursing. A prospective evaluative study was established to measure the impact of collaborative practice on increased patient and family satisfaction with health care, as well as the impact on selected outcome variables. A specific 27-bed medical unit and a comparison unit with identical structural characteristics were chosen for study from March 31, 1982, to March 31, 1983. Results of the study indicate that significant differences in patients' perceptions of care existed between the Collaborative Practice Unit (CPU) and the comparison unit under a traditional team nursing system. More positive ratings from patients on the CPU were found for all selected dimensions: patient-provider interaction; quality of care; health education; knowledge of practitioners; and the environment. In order to assess the impact of collaborative practice on outcome variables, a retrospective audit of randomly selected patient records was done. No significant differences for selected variables were found except for the number of health teaching plans. More documented health teaching was recorded on the Team Nursing Unit. In this note these claims are challenged, both by a reanalysis of some previous data using more-standard statistical tests, and by an experiment in which equally significant results were obtained by guessing ''talker'' weights without listening to speech samples. Abstract

In 21 patients who had lower extremity swelling and negative venography, radiographic evaluation was extended to include computerized tomography (CT) of the lower extremity, which we have termed venography-CT, or VCT. All patients were referred with the diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and no patient had a history of trauma. CT was effective in demonstrating two occult mechanisms of lower extremity swelling: knee joint effusion (three patients) and intramuscular hemorrhage (five patients). Selective utilization of CT in the evaluation of lower extremity swelling is effective in directing the clinical management of these patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
