The downtown area of the city of Coimbra, Portugal, is at low altitude and has historically suffered floods that have caused serious economic losses. The present research proposes a mobile augmented reality (MAR) application aimed at visualising the effect of possible scenarios of flooding in an area of higher risk in the city. A realistic 3D model of the city was created, using data extracted with BLosm and processed through Blender, followed by its integration into Unity with Vuforia for AR visualisation. The methodology encompasses the extraction and simplification of 3D models, mapping real-world coordinates in Unity, analysing several datasets, obtaining a model through regression and implementing a workflow to manage interactions between various Unity objects. The MAR application enables users to visualise potential flood impacts on buildings, utilising colour-coded indicators to represent different levels of water contact. The system's efficacy was evaluated by simulating various use-case scenarios, demonstrating the application's capability to provide real-time, interactive flood risk assessments. This text seeks to relate Fernando Távora’s urban design of Sansão Square, in Coimbra, with the social, cultural and material conditions that surrounded it and, above all, with some particular characteristics of Távora’s mindset regarding his own design practice. On examining the process, it becomes abundantly clear that the relationship between the developer, the supervisors, the architect and the builder was far from balanced. Fernando Távora submitted the preliminary project for approval in April 1993. From then until construction was completed, by the end of 1997, a myriad of problems arose during the natural development of the project: from delays in formalising the contract, to successive disagreements over the choices of materials, or even the attempt to include different elements from the approved project. Without any kind of concessions to the traditionalist way, Távora sets out on the 8 de Maio Square project — one of his dearest, in his own words — with full awareness that historical reposition is not something to be searched for, under the dust of a thousand circumstances, it is not something flexible that could be adapted to the occasion, under risk of losing its tie to the truth. Finally, we intend to reflect on the meaning of time and space limits in design practice and in the final result of architecture. The duration of a project, of a work, time itself, is not, never has been and never can be a condition for inclusion or exclusion in any category.

The rapid process of urbanization has caused drastic changes in land use in urban spaces. As a result, there is an increase in temperatures inside cities (urban heat island). Thus, one of the best solutions to mitigate this increase in temperatures is the implementation of green and blue spaces, as these are of great importance in the reduction of temperatures and in the quality of life of the citizens. It is in this sense that this article is developed, to understand the contribution of green and blue spaces to sustainable urban planning and resilience to climate change. Using data loggers, temperature data was collected to compare three different seasons of the year (winter, spring and summer), and also three times of the day (morning, afternoon and night). For this, four green spaces in the city of Coimbra were selected, namely, Parque Verde do Mondego (left and right bank), Parque Dr. Manuel Braga and Parque da Canção, and also on the Mondego River. Vegetation is found to play a role in mitigating the urban climate, with varying temperatures observed in green spaces (generally cooler) and spaces with limited vegetation, such as Parque da Canção. In the river, it is verified, at various times of the day, the influence of the surrounding infrastructure (concrete wall), causing the downstream sector to register higher temperatures than upstream. A Universidade de Coimbra foi, na época moderna, uma instituição poliédrica. A historiografia tem-nos revelado a sua função de entidade produtora de conhecimento e de formação de letrados que desempenharam cargos no reino e no império. Foi também um senhorio territorial, que constituiu a base material do seu financiamento, e um senhorio jurisdicional dotado de várias prerrogativas que lhe conferiam poder real e simbólico. Dotada da jurisdição senhorial intermédia, usufruía da prerrogativa de isenção de correição, do apuramento das eleições das justiças concelhias que era feito pelo Reitor ou pelo ouvidor e do conhecimento de apelações e agravos. A Universidade era ainda detentora de vários privilégios, destacando-se o foro privativo que libertava das justiças régias os membros da corporação universitária, assim como muitas pessoas que com ela interagiam. Numa análise de longa duração (1290-1835) apreendem-se as fases de estruturação e consolidação do sistema senhorial, que coincidem com períodos de reforma nos estudos, bem como as dificuldades de a instituição obter os recursos humanos e materiais adequados para controlar um território senhorial geograficamente disperso e habitado por enfiteutas e paroquianos que não se deixavam apanhar nas malhas das justiças privativas senhoriais Neste estudo, analisamos a Universidade de Coimbra na sua vertente senhorial no sentido de identificar a natureza, proveniência e forma de gestão das suas fontes de financiamento e apuramos alguns dos constrangimentos dos Estudos provenientes da impossibilidade de afetar os recursos suficientes às atividades específicas da Academia.

This research focuses on examining how the pursuit of economic growth can contribute to urban shrinkage. In contrast to the prevalent definition of urban shrinkage that links population loss to insufficient levels of economic growth, this study examines the case of Coimbra, Portugal, where something different is happening. We hypothesise that Coimbra experiences population loss due to urban policies that promote economic growth through housing speculation. We conclude that the hypothesis is valid using semi-structured interviews and document analysis as data collection methods. The identified phenomenon disproportionately affects younger and vulnerable residents, forcing them to relocate due to unaffordable housing options. However, it benefits the local authority and national government, which collaborate with global economic powers that invest in real estate to accumulate capital. The conformist and legalistic-bureaucratic nature of the Portuguese planning system, evident in Coimbra’s local authority, exacerbates the problem. We emphasise the potentially transformative impact of economic degrowth thinking on housing policy. The implications of this research question the validity of mainstream economic theory as commonly applied to urban planning.

El romance «Yo me estando en Tordesillas», por su carácter trunco y lo enigmático de su desarrollo, ha resultado ser un acertijo desde la publicación del romancero de Durán pues resultaba imposible identificar una «reina de Castilla, infanta de Portugal» que llegó a Coímbra, no pudo entrar en la ciudad y se refugió en un monasterio «que estava en el arrabal». El análisis de la guerra castellano-portuguesa por la sucesión de Fernando I permite identificarlo fácilmente con un episodio del conflicto, el fallido ataque a esta ciudad de 1384, pues sabemos por la crónica de Ayala que su esposa Beatriz, heredera del reino portugués, acompañaba a su marido Juan I de Castilla que reivindicaba para ambos la corona lusa y que, en febrero de este año, Coímbra les cerró las puertas y se alojaron en el monasterio de Santa Clara de Coímbra, en el arrabal de la ciudad.

O presente texto, focando a temática das alcaidarias medievais em Portugal, propõe-se investigar tanto o que eram, como alguns aspetos da sua organização e do seu funcionamento. Partindo da análise de documentação relativa a Coimbra, na primeira metade do século XIII, reconstitui-se o quadro da organização da defesa das portas, muralhas e torres da cidade do Mondego e da gestão de custos financeiros da sua pretoria ao tempo da conquista de Elvas (1230).

Understanding the thermal effects of different urban patterns that constitute today's urban landscapes is critical to the development of urban resilience to climate change. This article aims to assess the efficiency of urban green spaces in thermal regulation. Through thermography, we explored the interaction between air temperature and the spatial components within these environments. Through comparative analysis involving a UAV, we studied the relationship between air temperatures at varying altitudes and the temperature within tree canopies. The results revealed significant differences in the thermal distribution between impervious urban areas with buildings and green spaces. These findings provide important information for assessing thermal comfort and the efficiency of urban green spaces in mitigating the impact of extreme heat events. During the summer months, green spaces, due to shade and the enhanced absorption of solar radiation by trees, exhibited lower temperatures compared to impervious areas. However, in winter, urban areas displayed higher temperatures, attributable to their heat retention capacity. This study contributes to the existing knowledge base by providing an in-depth examination of the thermal efficiency of urban green spaces across different layers of their lower atmosphere. Our results underscore the crucial role of tree cover in thermal comfort regulation, offering valuable information for sustainable urban planning. These insights are particularly relevant for the design of more comfortable and resilient environments in response to climatic variations and for the crafting of a tree-planting strategy in Mediterranean climate cities, an area where the impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly apparent. O estudo faz o ponto relativamente à existência de uma eventual “escola de Coimbra” (séculos XVI-XVIII), de âmbito filosófico, para o que começa por incidir nas produções teóricas – a história – que podem contribuir para o esclarecimento da questão, enumera algumas das linhas dessas produções e da eventual escola – tendências – e enuncia alguns problemas que criam dificuldades à identidade discutida.

This essay analyzes the life of Gonçalves Dias during the period that he was living in Coimbra, through a literary perspective extracted from his own poetry and, mostly, his intimate epistle, followed by biographical criticism. We present a biographic essay demonstrating, specifically, about the way the poet felt and lived Coimbra. Declares that the life he had on the banks of the Mondego was sad, but sadder, he considered, would be to live and die without one name. The city, alma-mater, whom he called, in a correspondence to his best friend, damned and annoyed by poetry, won. So annoyed that he gave us the “Song of Exile” – the greatest expression of nationality in Brazilian romanticism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a cross-sectoral issue, the promotion of health needs to be addressed across all policies. In Portugal, as more competencies are being transferred to local governments, the integration of health considerations into municipal plans remains a challenge and guidance on how to develop an integrated municipal health strategy is absent. The aim of this study is to describe the conceptual and methodological approach that informed the development of an integrated and multisectoral municipal health strategy in the City of Coimbra. Its design followed a population health approach with a geographic lens, looking at how the population's health outcomes and health determinants were geographically distributed across the municipality, as well as the extent to which policies from multiple sectors can address them. The planning cycle followed an iterative workflow of five actions: assessing, prioritizing, planning, implementing, and monitoring. Following a participatory planning approach, several participatory processes were conducted involving local stakeholders and citizens (e.g., population-based surveys, workshops, Delphi, collaborative sessions) to identify problems, establish priorities, and define measures and actions. The strategic framework for action integrates 94 actions across multisectoral domains of municipal intervention: sustainable mobility and public places, safe and adequate housing, accessible healthcare, social cohesion and participation, education and health literacy, and intersectoral and collaborative leadership. Findings shed light on important aspects that can inform other municipal strategies, such as the adoption of a place-based approach, focused on geographic inequalities, health determinants and stakeholder participation, and the application of a health in all policies framework. An annotated version of an account written by José Luis Múzquiz in March 1941, during a trip to Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra. The trip was made on behalf of the Spanish scientific research authorities, who were keen to promote cultural exchange with the neighboring country. The visit brought Múzquiz into contact with a large number of Portuguese university professors and students.

Na arte figurativa produzida (ou trazida) para Portugal entre os séculos XIII e XIV, a representação de Santiago encontrou uma expressão mais diversificada e mais abundante nas diversas formas de escultura do que na pintura, onde só conhecemos a sua presença a partir do século XV ou, na ourivesaria, de que não nos chegou qualquer exemplo. Assim, este texto propõe abordar as primeiras representações do apóstolo Tiago Maior na arte portuguesa através de esculturas devocionais (imagens de altar), mas também de relevos, e de como a iconografia do santo acompanhou as variações/ preferências da religiosidade de cada época, bem como os factores políticos dominantes.

O presente estudo tem como principal objetivo apresentar a análise de registros de passaportes do distrito de Coimbra cujos titulares pretendiam viajar/emigrar para a província brasileira do Rio Grande do Sul entre 1881 e 1889. Apesar da vasta bibliografia existente a respeito da emigração portuguesa para o Brasil nos séculos XIX e XX, ainda são poucos os trabalhos que se centram no Rio Grande do Sul, local onde predomina o estudo das imigrações alemã e italiana. Foram analisados 396 registros de passaporte do Governo Civil de Coimbra, disponíveis no Arquivo da Universidade de Coimbra e no site FamilySearch. As principais conclusões a que foi possível chegar são: uma maioria absoluta de titulares do sexo masculino; a proximidade entre o número de casados e solteiros; o elevado índice de instrução para os parâmetros portugueses da segunda metade do século XIX; uma maioria de trabalhadores do mundo rural e indícios de uma realidade violenta.

This paper falls within the scope of heritage tourism studies, focusing particularly on one UNESCO World Heritage Site. It seeks to contribute to tourism literature by achieving a better understanding of which cognitive and affective factors are behind tourists' decisions to travel to these sites, their experiences during their visit and behavioural intention after the visit. A self-administered questionnaire focusing on the variables included in the proposed research model was given to tourists. A composite-based structural equation modelling approach was employed for the analysis. The findings revealed a significant and high correlation between travel attitude and perceived authenticity, travel motivations and destination image, and authenticity and destination image, but it goes beyond those relations by analyzing them in an integrated manner and at different stages of the visit to comprehend tourist behavioural intention after the visit. Besides the theoretical advancements with this study, the practical and managerial implications must be emphasized particularly for entities responsible for destination marketing that may be able to use the outcome of our research to work on proper promotion strategies.
