Abstract

FAMU is an INFN-led muonic atom physics experiment based at the RIKEN-RAL muon facility at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source (United Kingdom). The aim of FAMU is to measure the hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen to determine the value of the proton Zemach radius with accuracy better than 1%.The experiment has a scintillating-fibre hodoscope for beam monitoring and data normalisation. In order to carry out muon flux estimation, low-rate measurements were performed to extract the single-muon average deposited charge. Then, detector simulation in Geant4 and FLUKA allowed a thorough understanding of the single-muon response function, crucial for determining the muon flux. This work presents the design features of the FAMU beam monitor, along with the simulation and absolute calibration measurements in order to enable flux determination and enable data normalisation.

Abstract

The FAMU experiment at RIKEN-RAL is a muonic atom experiment with the aim to determine the Zemach radius of the proton by measuring the 1s hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen. The activity of the FAMU Collaboration in the years 2015-2023 enabled the final optimisation of the detector-target setup as well as the gas working condition in terms of temperature, pressure and gas mixture composition. The experiment has started its data taking in July 2023. Abstract

The first measurement of the temperature dependence of the muon transfer rate from muonic hydrogen to oxygen was performed by the FAMU collaboration in 2016. The results provide evidence that the transfer rate rises with the temperature in the range 104-300 K. This paper presents the results of the experiment done in 2018 to extend the measurements towards lower (70 K) and higher (336 K) temperatures. The 2018 results confirm the temperature dependence of the muon transfer rate observed in 2016 and sets firm ground for comparison with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract

We report the first measurement of the temperature dependence of muon transfer rate from $\mu$p atoms to oxygen between 100 and 300 K. Data were obtained from the X-ray spectra of delayed events in gaseous target H$_2$/O$_2$ exposed to a muon beam. Based on the data, we determined the muon transfer energy dependence up to 0.1 eV, showing an 8-fold increase in contrast with the predictions of constant rate in the low energy limit. This work set constraints on theoretical models of muon transfer, and is of fundamental importance for the measurement of the hyperfine splitting of $\mu$p by the FAMU collaboration., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

Abstract

The main goal of the FAMU experiment is the measurement of the hyperfine splitting (hfs) in the 1S state of muonic hydrogen $\Delta E_{hfs}(\mu^-p)1S$. The physical process behind this experiment is the following: $\mu p$ are formed in a mixture of hydrogen and a higher-Z gas. When absorbing a photon at resonance-energy $\Delta E_{hfs}\approx0.182$~eV, in subsequent collisions with the surrounding $H_2$ molecules, the $\mu p$ is quickly de-excited and accelerated by $\sim2/3$ of the excitation energy. The observable is the time distribution of the K-lines X-rays emitted from the $\mu Z$ formed by muon transfer $(\mu p) +Z \rightarrow (\mu Z)^*+p$, a reaction whose rate depends on the $\mu p$ kinetic energy. The maximal response, to the tuned laser wavelength, of the time distribution of X-ray from K-lines of the $(\mu Z)^*$ cascade indicate the resonance. During the preparatory phase of the FAMU experiment, several measurements have been performed both to validate the methodology and to prepare the best configuration of target and detectors for the spectroscopic measurement. Abstract

The high precision measurement of the hyperfine splitting of the muonic-hydrogen atom ground state with pulsed and intense muon beam requires careful technological choices both in the construction of a gas target and of the detectors. In June 2014, the pressurized gas target of the FAMU experiment was exposed to the low energy pulsed muon beam at the RIKEN RAL muon facility. The objectives of the test were the characterization of the target, the hodoscope and the X-ray detectors. The apparatus consisted of a beam hodoscope and X-rays detectors made with high purity Germanium and Lanthanum Bromide crystals. Abstract

Background: Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are responsible for the metastatic dissemination of colorectal cancer (CRC) to the liver, lungs and lymph nodes. CTCs rarity and heterogeneity strongly limit the elucidation of their biological features, as well as preclinical drug sensitivity studies aimed at metastasis prevention. Methods: We generated organoids from CTCs isolated from an orthotopic CRC xenograft model. CTCs-derived organoids (CTCDOs) were characterized through proteome profiling, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, tumor-forming capacity and drug screening assays. The expression of intra- and extracellular markers found in CTCDOs was validated on CTCs isolated from the peripheral blood of CRC patients. Results: CTCDOs exhibited a hybrid epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) state and an increased expression of stemness-associated markers including the two homeobox transcription factors Goosecoid and Pancreatic Duodenal Homeobox Gene-1 (PDX1), which were also detected in CTCs from CRC patients. Functionally, CTCDOs showed a higher migratory/invasive ability and a different response to pathway-targeted drugs as compared to xenograft-derived organoids (XDOs). Specifically, CTCDOs were more sensitive than XDOs to drugs affecting the Survivin pathway, which decreased the levels of Survivin and X-Linked Inhibitor of Apoptosis Protein (XIAP) inducing CTCDOs death. Conclusions: These results indicate that CTCDOs recapitulate several features of colorectal CTCs and may be used to investigate the features of metastatic CRC cells, to identify new prognostic biomarkers and to devise new potential strategies for metastasis prevention.

Abstract

The FAMU experiment aims to measure for the first time the hyperfine splitting of the muonic hydrogen ground state. From this measurement the proton Zemach radius can be derived and this will shed light on the determination of the proton charge radius. In this paper, we describe the scientific goal, the method and the detailed preparatory work. This includes the outcome of preliminary measurements, subsequent refined simulations and the evaluation of the expected results. The experimental setup being built for the measurement of the hyperfine splitting to be performed at the RAL laboratory muon facility is also described.

Abstract

We report the first measurement of the temperature dependence of muon transfer rate from muonic hydrogen atoms to oxygen between 100 and 300 K. Data were obtained from the X-ray spectra of delayed events in a gaseous target, made of a H2/O2 mixture, exposed to a muon beam. This work sets constraints on theoretical models of muon transfer and is of fundamental importance for the measurement of the hyperfine splitting of muonic hydrogen ground state as proposed by the FAMU collaboration.

Abstract

We present the design, realization and characterization of a sensor for the optical detection of hazardous road condition. The device exploits the radiation from a incoherent source to detect the polarized components of the light scattering from a rough surface and calculate a signal dependent on the surface state. We propose two distinct geometries, working with forward and backward scattering components, assessing the device performance in terms of reliability and compactness. In both cases, the sensor allows to discriminate potentially dangerous states like the presence of water (either wet surface or covered by a layer) or ice on an asphalt sample, in opposition to the dry surface representing a safe condition.

Abstract

Colloidal quantum dots are attracting a lot of interest for the fabrication of optoelectronics devices. In particular, they are suitable for simple, low cost and efficient photodetectors. Here we report on our recent results on lead sulphide colloidal quantum dot photoconductors operating in the near infrared spectral range. We describe the device fabrication process and provide an exhaustive electrical and optical characterization. The photodetectors exhibit a responsivity as high as 46 A/W and specific detectivity of about 1.7·1011 cmHz1/2W-1. Performance are investigated as a function of the voltage bias, device geometry and optical power. An evaluation of the device stability over time was also carried out.

Abstract

Colloidal Quantum Dots (CQD) have been widely studied for their peculiar optical characteristics such as enhanced optical absorption and tunable absorption spectrum. Many different photodetectors have been proposed but overall performance is still poor from the point of view of the bandwidth and noise performance. Here we propose the employment of a PbS QD photoconductor as an ultra-high sensitivity fire detector, exploiting the outstanding device responsivity at low optical powers. Moreover, we demonstrate the outstanding flexibility of CQD based devices, employing our detectors also as simple pollution gas sensors for NO2 detection.

Abstract

The aim of the FAMU (Fisica degli Atomi Muonici) experiment is to realize the first measurement of the hyperfine splitting (hfs) in the 1S state of muonic hydrogen Delta E-1S(hfs), by using the RIKEN-RAL intense pulsed muon beam and a high-energy mid-infrared tunable laser. This requires a detailed study of the muon transfer mechanism at different temperatures and hence at different epithermal states of the muonic system. The experimental setup involves a cryogenic pressurized gas target and a detection system based on silicon photomultipliers-fiber beam hodoscopes and high purity Germanium detectors and Cerium doped Lanthanium Bromide crystals, for X-rays detection at energies around 100 keV.Simulation, construction and detector performances of the FAMU apparatus at RAL are reported in this paper.

Methods: A population of chemoresistant quiescent/slow cycling cells was isolated through PKH26 staining (which allows to separate cells on the basis of their proliferation rate) from colorectal cancer (CRC) xenografts and subjected to global gene expression and pathway activation analyses. Factors expressed by the quiescent/slow cycling population were analyzed through lentiviral overexpression approaches for their ability to induce a dormant chemoresistant state both in vitro and in mouse xenografts. The correlation between quiescence-associated factors, CRC consensus molecular subtype and cancer prognosis was analyzed in large patient datasets. Results: Untreated colorectal tumors contain a population of quiescent/slow cycling cells with stem cell features (quiescent cancer stem cells, QCSCs) characterized by a predetermined mesenchymal-like chemoresistant phenotype. QCSCs expressed increased levels of ZEB2, a transcription factor involved in stem cell plasticity and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and of antiapototic factors pCRAF and pASK1. ZEB2 overexpression upregulated pCRAF/pASK1 levels resulting in increased chemoresistance, enrichment of cells with stemness/EMT traits and proliferative slowdown of tumor xenografts. In parallel, chemotherapy treatment of tumor xenografts induced the prevalence of QCSCs with a stemness/EMT phenotype and activation of the ZEB2/pCRAF/pASK1 axis, resulting in a chemotherapy-unresponsive state. In CRC patients, increased ZEB2 levels correlated with worse relapse-free survival and were strongly associated to the consensus molecular subtype 4 (CMS4) characterized by dismal prognosis, decreased proliferative rates and upregulation of EMT genes. Abstract

Colloidal quantum dots represent a breakthrough technology for the development of optical devices, in particular photodetectors. However, the performance of CQDs photodetectors show strong aging phenomena. To solve this problem, we investigate the degradation of NIR photodetectors based on lead sulphide CQDs as a function of time and propose a viable solution to improve their time drift. The approach is based on a polymer or resin deposition for the device passivation. The devices were measured over a long time span and passivated detectors were compared to as grown ones. The results show a reduced drift of the passivated devices.

Abstract

In this work, we present highlights and major milestones in the field of CQDs, starting from their optical and electronic properties that can be tailored not only by the atomic composition but also by the size, shape, and surface functionalization. We will also touch on CQD synthesis, processing and assembly, emphasizing their flexibility, low cost, low temperature and scalability. We will review recent advances in the design and fabrication of optoelectronic devices based on colloidal semiconductor quantum dots, with emphasis on light emitters, detectors and solar cells. We conclude with a short discussion on the large potentialities of this new class of materials as well as the challenges that must be addressed towards solution-processed functional optoelectronic nanomaterials for their practical applications in various fields.

Abstract

The FAMU experiment aims to accurately measure the hyperfine splitting of the ground state of the muonic hydrogen atom. A measurement of the transfer rate of muons from hydrogen to heavier gases is necessary for this purpose. In June 2014, within a preliminary experiment, a pressurized gas-target was exposed to the pulsed low-energy muon beam at the RIKEN RAL muon facility (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK). The main goal of the test was the characterization of both the noise induced by the pulsed beam and the X-ray detectors. The apparatus, to some extent rudimental, has served admirably to this task. Technical results have been published that prove the validity of the choices made and pave the way for the next steps. This paper presents the results of physical relevance of measurements of the muon transfer rate to carbon dioxide, oxygen, and argon from non-thermalized excited µp atoms. The analysis methodology and the approach to the systematics errors are useful for the subsequent study of the transfer rate as function of the kinetic energy of the µp currently under way.
