Focus of Presentation Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been shown to increase health risk behaviors and negative health outcomes. ACE surveys have been well documented in high income countries, but have been less widely used in low and middle-income countries. The current project included three phases and used a mixed methods study design to understand ACEs in Munsieville, South Africa. The first phase included focus groups to modify the World Health Organization’s ACE International Questionnaire (ACE-IQ) for cultural competence and relevance. The second phase included a community wide survey using the adapted ACE-IQ. The third phase closed the feedback loop and disseminated the findings to the community to identify steps to build a trauma-informed community. Findings Focus groups identified 23 questions and four response options for modification and two questions for deletion. Survey results (N = 917) showed ACEs are common in Munsieville: 53.7% had a guardian die, 30.1% lived with someone who abused substances or alcohol, 54.7% experienced emotional abuse, 41.4% physical abuse, 11.5% reported sexual abuse. Most people did not report their abuse (74.6%). Community violence was common with 75.3% witnessing someone being beaten up and 58.7% witnessing someone being stabbed or shot. Conclusions/Implications The community recommended providing training on trauma, creating a center that would serve as a safe, centralized location for services, and identifying key stakeholders and partners in the community to build a trauma-informed system of care. Key messages The mixed methods approach proved valuable to understand and describe the prevalence of ACEs, provide feedback to the community, and determine community driven next steps.

Climate change is a crisis in our midst. This scoping review examines practices to transition away from fossil fuels in the social work literature, to inform social work engagement in climate mitigation and in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and 13 (Climate Action). We searched peer-reviewed and grey literature, applying the inclusion criteria: (1) published on or since 1 January 2005; (2) social work literature; (3) examines at least one topic related to the transition away from fossil fuels; and (4) describes, examines, or evaluates a specific form of practice for the transition away from fossil fuels that occurred or is occurring. Fifty-eight items met the inclusion criteria, containing 79 practices. The most frequent practice types were “organizing or advocacy” and “energy at home”. Common targets of change were individuals/households and private industry. The most organizing against private industry was led by Indigenous or Tribal nations. More social work engagement in the transition away from fossil fuels is needed, including engagement that embraces an ecosocial approach. Local organizing, advocacy, and program development are an area of strength and an intervention scale at which social workers can influence multi-prong efforts to transition away from fossil fuels. New social work policy analysis and advocacy at global, national, and state levels is also recommended.

Date Presented 03/28/20 This quasiexperimental study determined whether four homeless male veterans who partook in life-skills classes in a transitional housing program reported increased satisfaction and improved life skills according to the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM). Results of paired t-tests indicated no statistically significant change; however, all participants reported a self-perceived change of two or more points, which is clinically significant and could inform future programs and OT practice. Osteological examination of a 9th–11th century skeleton from Black Gate Cemetery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, reveals Madelung's deformity of both forearms and shortened stature due to reduced tibial length. These are indicative of dyschondrosteosis, a genetically transmitted mild form of mesomelia. This case adds to a small but growing presence of this condition in pre-modern societies. There is evidence in recent Government policy in England of the emergence of a wider role for schools in relation to the neighbourhoods they serve. In particular, the National Strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal in England sets the work of schools within the context of an overarching regeneration strategy. The study reported here, sponsored by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, aimed to explore the ways in which schools were conceptualizing this new role and the contributions they were making to area regeneration. It did so through case studies of nine schools serving two disadvantaged housing estates in the North East of England. In each area, interviews were undertaken with head teachers, teachers, local authority and local education authority officers, councillors, representatives of community organizations, residents, parents and children.
