This paper documents the structure and operations of student governments in contemporary Chinese higher education and their effect on college students' political trust and party membership. We first investigate the structure and power distribution within student governments in Chinese universities, specifically focusing on the autonomy of student governments and the degree to which they represent students. Second, using a large sample of college students, we examine how participating in student government affects their political trust and party membership. Our results show that student government in Chinese higher education possesses a complex, hierarchical matrix structure with two main parallel systems-the student union and the Chinese Communist Party system. We found that power distribution within student governments is rather uneven, and student organisations that are affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party have an unequal share of power. This article examines religious belief and political activism among Sydney undergraduates during the 1930s and 1940s. Confronted with such major political issues as the peace movement, the eruption of world war and the question of post-war reconstruction, a substantial number of students looked for solutions informed by faith. The history of two influential campus groups, the Student Christian Movement and the Evangelical Union, reveals that political activity was often shaped by particular religious views. The SCM's openness to theological liberalism and biblical criticism was accompanied by a willingness to grapple with political issues and question the capitalist structures of society. The theologically conservative EU eschewed political engagement in favour of defending the fundamentals of Christian belief and calling individuals to conversion. The religious differences between these two groups help explain their members' contrasting responses to peace and war during the second quarter of the twentieth century. They also illuminate Christianity's complex and significant contribution to political thought and action at Australia's first university.

In this study, college students were exposed to the final 2004 Bush-Kerry televised presidential debate. Participants were randomly assigned to one of five presentation conditions (i.e., ABC, CNN, C-SPAN, Fox News, and PBS). Using a pretest--posttest experimental design, participants rated the candidates on 12 personal and professional attributes. A feeling thermometer also assessed whether the participants' feelings toward the candidates changed following the debate. The results suggest that various presentation styles influenced perceptions of Kerry on the attributes of success and friendliness and on the feeling thermometer. Changes in perceptions on the attribute of strength were also found for Bush. Keywords: presidential debates; presentation style; presidential candidate attributes

Students enrolled in Mexico City's exclusive Catholic preparatory schools faced a crisis in 1926 that threatened to ruin their academic careers. The students were being victimized by pro-government UNAM officials because of their Catholic Church affiliation and this at a time that the Church was locked in a bitter struggle with President Plutarco Elias Calles and by mid 1926 these affected students had organized themselves into a city-wide student group, the Union of Private Schools Students.

This study was designed to examine gender differences in the political engagement of college students, in relation to perception of gender inequality, partisanship, issue involvement, and media use during the 2000 presidential and congressional campaign. A survey-based study of political engagement was conducted among 236 undergraduate students at a large northeastern university in Pennsylvania--a swing state--during the campaign. Findings support the theory that women with higher perception of gender inequality tend to be more politically engaged than women with lower perception gender inequality. Foreign policy as an issue of interest is important in this study because it is the only policy issue for which there was both a significant gender difference and a significant association with political engagement. This study examined the differences between academic major and reported attitudes and beliefs about the environment. Other variables investigated included sex, age, and place of residence. Throughout the 1993 and 1995 academic years, students within a variety of academic majors at a university in British Columbia were queried using a modified New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) instrument. Significant differences in environmental attitudes were observed in the variables of academic major, gender, and age. The results of this study suggest that individuals majoring in different academic disciplines place fundamentally different levels of concerns and express different beliefs regarding the environment.

Issues concerning the 1989 social movement in China are examined, focusing on how the symbols and rituals of the movement were interpreted by two individuals who participated in the movement. Topics include the manner in which dissenters were labeled as 'hooligans' or 'rioters' by the state, the demands of the dissenters, and the manner in which the Communist Party expressed its power.

Ways to increase the delivery of a special thank-you card following behavior that protected the environment or helped another person were addressed. In Study 1, direct rewards for the target behavior were compared with indirect rewards for making a promise to emit the target behavior. Rewards for promising to give out thank-you cards resulted in the most participation and led to the most cards used per participant. In Study 2, students in one class received coupons for a raffle if they signed a petition to hand out two or more thank-you cards (indirect rewards). In a second class, students got one opportunity to win prizes in a raffle for each card delivered (direct rewards). Significantly more cards were distributed in the Direct Reward condition. However, significantly more students handed out at least one card in the Indirect Reward condition. Implications for encouraging college students to support pro-environment and pro-social behaviors are discussed.
