Necropsies on Toggenburg goats culled from a small farm in the Manawatū district of New Zealand, performed at Massey University (Palmerston North, NZ) over a period of 29 years (1991–2019), revealed soft tissue mineralisation, particularly of cardiovascular tissues. The farm spans 10 acres and runs between 15 and 30 Toggenburg goats. The goats are predominantly on pasture comprising a variety of types. Necropsies were performed on all adult goats (n = 45) that died or were euthanised. Histopathology was performed on 42 goats (93%), of which 33 (73%) included sufficient tissues diagnostically relevant to soft tissue mineralisation. The most significant gross findings were in various arteries, with the aorta most commonly affected, followed by the heart and lungs. The aortic intima showed prominent, multifocal to coalescing, raised, wrinkled, white plaques. Microscopically there were multiphasic lesions of mineralisation, chondroid, and osseous metaplasia in the elastic arteries, aorta, heart and lungs. A lumbar vertebra from one goat had prominent, basophilic, fibrillar, tangled matrix lining Haversian canals and lamellae. Blood samples were collected from 15 adult goats in the affected herd and from 10 adult Toggenburg goats from an unaffected herd. Samples were collected by jugular venipuncture at 2-month intervals for 12 months (April 2018–March 2019). Concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, 25-hydroxyvitamin D2 and D3 (25OHD2, 25OHD3) in serum were analysed. The concentration of total 25OHD in serum was 34.2 (95% CI = 18.9–49.4) nmol/L (p < 0.001) higher in goats from the affected herd than in goats from the unaffected herd. Serum 25OHD2 concentration was 46.2 (95% CI = 39.2–53.2) nmol/L higher (p < 0.001) in goats from the affected herd compared to the unaffected herd. Serum Ca concentrations in affected goats were 0.101 (95% CI = 0.005–0.196) mmol/L higher (p = 0.039) than unaffected goats, but remained within the reference range. There was no evidence of a difference in serum 25OHD3 and P concentration between the herds. All paddocks on the property were surveyed every 2 months along evenly spaced line transects, and then further traversed perpendicularly to form a grid. No known calcinogenic species were identified. Known plant sources of vitamin D identified on the farm included mushrooms (species not defined), Dactylis glomerata, lichen, pine pollen, and algae. Veterinarians are alerted to the possibility of either enzootic calcinosis in goats and the potential occurrence of calcinogenic plants in New Zealand; or chronic vitamin D toxicosis of non-plant origin. Fifteen lambs from a flock of 1,000, 5-month-old Romney lambs in the Manawatū region of New Zealand, developed unusual postural and gait abnormalities during the summer of 2020. In mid-January, the lambs were grazing a raphanobrassica crop (xRaphanobrassica; Brassica oleracea x Raphanus sativus) but were removed from this crop soon after as they developed dermal lesions on the pinnae consistent with photosensitisation (colloquially known as "rape scald"). The lambs were placed onto a shaded paddock containing a pasture of predominantly perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and white clover (Trifolium repens). One week following removal from the crop (late January), the 15 lambs developed abnormal postures and gaits that were described by farm staff as "neurological" and "swayback-like". From a distance, all 15 lambs exhibited remarkably similar abnormal posture and gait whereby their weight was borne on their carpi, and they appeared to crawl while walking due to crouched hindquarters and prominent lordosis. Of the affected lambs, five were submitted for clinical examination. All five had normal vital signs. The results of neurological examinations were within normal limits. In response to palpation of the dorsum, the lambs performed an exaggerated and unusual dipping motion, particularly when pressure was applied over the lumbar spine. Parting of the fleece over the dorsum revealed thickened, indurated skin that cracked and tore easily. The shorn pelt of a euthanised lamb revealed a large (100 cm × 40 cm), locally extensive, irregular ovoid region of the skin of the dorsum that was markedly thickened, indurated and crusted. Impression smears of the lesions revealed long filamentous chains of plump coccoid bacteria separated by transverse and longitudinal septa, consistent with Dermatophilus congolensis. Histopathology of the lesions revealed severe, chronic-active, locally extensive, necrosuppurative dermatitis with marked acanthosis, orthokeratotic and parakeratotic hyperkeratosis, ulceration, filamentous bacteria and coccoid zoospores. Cutaneous dermatophilosis due to Dermatophilus congolensis. Painful dermal lesions due to severe dermatophilosis of the dorsal skin of sheep are capable of causing postural and gait abnormalities that may be misinterpreted as signs of neurological abnormality. Three outbreaks of photosensitisation in 4-5-month-old lambs were investigated near Palmerston North, New Zealand. The first grazed paddock comprised chicory ( I Cichorium intybus i ), the second lucerne (alfalfa, I Medicago sativa i ), and the third perennial ryegrass ( I Lolium perenne i ) and white clover ( I Trifolium repens i ); these paddocks appeared virtually weed-free. In those days the term "trefoil" implied medicks and clovers, whereas nowadays this name is reserved for I Lotus i spp. Since, to date, the weight of evidence is limited to field evidence of primary phototoxicity only, both I Lotus i spp., as well as the clovers and lucerne fall into the recently proposed B1 confidence ranking classification (Collett [5]). Case history: In July and August 2019, 15/40, ≤48-hour-old calves became acutely ill. The calves were all born on-farm, transferred to pens soon after birth, and fed with "gold" colostrum. The hygiene, biosecurity and ventilation in the pens were poor. Of the 15 calves, 11 died or were euthanised and four calves, ≤48-hour-old, that became acutely ill later in the outbreak were treated with cefquinome, a fourth-generation cephalosporin, and recovered. Clinical findings: The affected calves presented with acute recumbency, lethargy, tachypnoea, tachycardia, increased lung sounds, inability to stand or feed, and dehydration without pyrexia. Pathological findings: Gross findings in a calf that died naturally included fibrinous pleuropneumonia, marked oedematous expansion of the interlobular septa, especially in the ventral lung lobes, fibrinous polyserositis and fibrinous polyarthritis. A second calf that was euthanised had strikingly similar lung lesions. Histologically, the pulmonary interlobular septa of both calves were prominently expanded by oedema, dilated lymphatics and the infiltration of numerous neutrophils and macrophages interspersed with small Gram-negative rod bacteria. Likewise, the visceral pleura showed fibrinopurulent inflammation with numerous small Gram-negative rods. Microbiological findings: Microbial culture and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry identified Bibersteinia trehalosi in the lung, stifle joint and peritoneal cavity of the first calf and lung of the second. Diagnosis: B. trehalosi acute fibrinous pleuropneumonia and septicaemia. Clinical relevance: This is the first report of the clinical findings and histological lesions of B. trehalosi pleuropneumonia and septicaemia in calves in New Zealand. The pathogen is isolated with increasing frequency from cases of bovine respiratory disease in dairy cows, feedlot cattle and calves in the United Kingdom and North America. The importance of microbial culture in cases such as this with unusual lung lesions in calves <48 hours of age, cannot be over emphasised. Tumours or polyps in the nasal cavity of sheep or goats are rare (Madewell I et al. i [7]). Most intranasal neoplasms in sheep and goats are epithelial (Madewell I et al. i [7]; Rings and Rojko [9]) and are caused by species-specific enzootic nasal tumour retroviruses (Wilson [13]). The tumour probably arose from the conchae on the lateral wall and the pressure of expansion altered the internal morphology of the nasal cavity. This is a contagious tumour caused by enzootic nasal tumour virus-1 that originates in the epithelium of the ethmoid conchae and can be unilateral or bilateral (Stowe I et al. i [12]; Caswell and Williams [2]; Woolums [14]). AIM: To assess the benefit of inducing emesis in dogs that have ingested rodenticide bait containing brodifacoum (BDF), by determining the amount of BDF in bait recovered from the vomitus relative to the estimated amount consumed. METHODS: Between 2014 and 2015 samples of vomitus from seven dogs that ingested rodenticide baits containing BDF were submitted by veterinarians in New Zealand. All seven dogs had been given apomorphine by the veterinarian and vomited within 1 hour of ingesting the bait. Some or all of the bait particles were retrieved from each sample and were analysed for concentrations of BDF using HPLC. Based on estimations of the mass of bait consumed, the concentration of BDF stated on the product label, and the estimated mass of bait in the vomitus of each dog, the amount of BDF in the vomited bait was calculated as a percentage of the amount ingested. RESULTS: For five dogs an estimation of the mass of bait ingested was provided by the submitting veterinarian. For these dogs the estimated percentage of BDF in the bait retrieved from the vomitus was between 10–77%. All dogs were well after discharge but only one dog returned for further testing. This dog had a normal prothrombin time 3 days after ingestion. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The induction of emesis within 1 hour of ingestion can be a useful tool in reducing the exposure of dogs to a toxic dose of BDF. The BDF was not fully absorbed within 1 hour of ingestion suggesting that the early induction of emesis can remove bait containing BDF before it can be fully absorbed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study which evaluates the prevalence of disseminated Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (Map) infection in healthy ewes in a flock with a history of clinical Johne's disease in New Zealand. Histological tests were performed to determine the pathological lesions characteristic of Johne's disease. The detection of Map infection in ewes by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) serology is highlighted.

The article discusses a study regarding the pathology of the reproductive tract of red deer stags with active Brucella ovis infection and in stags in which B. ovis infection had resolved. The researchers examined grossly and by histopathology the epididymides and accessory sex glands of 23 slaughtered red deer stags of varying history. Results showed that only a small percentage of red deer stags with B. ovis infection develop lesions of epididymitis that can be detected by scrotal palpation.

The article describes the case of a three-month-old female Warmblood foal which was brought to the Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in New Zealand due to signs of colic with pyrexia. Due to continued aneurysm in the left umbilical artery, euthanasia was performed. Results of post-mortem examination confirmed an infected aortic aneurysmal mass in the dorsal midline caudal to the kidneys. Ideal treatment for infected aneurysm is surgical removal and antibiotics.

The article describes a case study of necrotic hepatitis associated with Clostridium novyi infection in a horse in New Zealand. Topics discussed include the clinical history of the patient, findings of physical and laboratory examinations performed on the animal as well as findings of a post-mortem examination performed following euthanasia. Holstein cows on a farm in the Humansdorp district, Eastern Cape province, South Africa, developed reddened, painful teat skin 3 days after grazing a mixed forage crop dominated by bulb turnip (Brassica rapa, Barkant cultivar). The crop was grazed 45 days after planting and 10% of the herd developed symptoms. More characteristic non-pigmented skin lesions started manifesting 1-2 days after the appearance of the teat lesions. Affected cows had elevated serum activities of gamma-glutamyl transferase, glutamate dehydrogenase and aspartate aminotransferase. These blood chemistry findings confirmed a secondary (hepatogenous) photosensitivity. As a result of the severity of the teat and skin lesions, seven cows were slaughtered and tissue samples from five of them were collected for histopathological examination. Liver lesions in cows that were culled 3 or more weeks after the onset of the outbreak showed oedematous concentric fibrosis around medium-sized bile ducts and inflammatory infiltrates in portal tracts. Characteristic lesions associated with other known hepatobiliary toxicities were not found. No new cases were reported 5 days after the cattle were removed from the turnips. The sudden introduction of the cows, without any period of transitioning or adaptation to grazing turnips, as well as the short latent period, clinical signs of photosensitisation, blood chemistry and histopathology, confirmed a diagnosis of Brassica-associated liver disease, a condition seen in New Zealand but not previously described in South Africa. Brassica forage crops are potentially toxic under certain conditions and farmers must be aware of these risks.

Cattle occasionally develop brassica-associated liver disease (BALD) and photosensitisation when grazing turnip or swede ( Brassica spp.) forage crops. The liver toxin in these brassica varieties has yet to be discovered. Progoitrin is the dominant glucosinolate in incriminated crops. Apart from goitrin, progoitrin hydrolysis yields the nitrile, 1-cyano-2-hydroxy-3-butene (CHB), and the epithionitrile, 1-cyano-2-hydroxy-3,4-epithiobutane (CHEB). The two compounds were custom-synthesised. In a small pilot trial, New Zealand White rabbits were given either CHB or CHEB by gavage. Single doses of 0.75 mmol/kg of CHB or 0.25 mmol/kg of CHEB were subtoxic and elicited subclinical effects. Higher doses were severely hepatotoxic, causing periportal to massive hepatic necrosis associated with markedly elevated serum liver biomarkers often resulting in severe illness or death within 24 h. The possibility that one or both of these hepatotoxic nitriles causes BALD in cattle requires further investigation.

A large outbreak of liver toxicity in dairy cows that were consuming swede (rutabaga, Brassica napus ssp. napobrassica ) crops in Southland and Otago, New Zealand in 2014 prompted the search for the toxin(s) responsible for brassica-associated liver disease (BALD). Analysis of swede plant material showed that the ultra-dominant glucosinolate was progoitrin. The two nitrile derivatives of progoitrin, 1-cyano-2-hydroxy-3-butene (CHB, also known as crambene) and 1-cyano-2-hydroxy-3,4-epithiobutane (CHEB), were custom-synthesised. In this pilot trial, individual progoitrin nitriles were administered by gavage to rats in order to establish a "subtoxic" dose, i.e. the dose where apparently clinically normal rats show liver injury based on altered serum biochemical indicators and histological lesions. We found that consecutive daily doses of 1 mmol/kg CHB produced severe pancreatic and mild liver histological lesions in the absence of notable biochemical changes in clinically normal rats. No evidence of a cumulative effect was seen. Single doses of 1 mmol/kg of CHEB caused elevated concentrations of serum creatinine and distinctive renal and stomach histological lesions in apparently clinically normal rats. Consecutive daily 1 mmol/kg doses of CHEB had a considerable cumulative effect and proved severely hepato- and nephrotoxic with creatinine concentrations peaking after three daily doses. Three other commercially available nitriles (3-butenenitrile, 4-pentenenitrile and 5-hexenenitrile) derived from minor glucosinolates in the swedes were also investigated in this pilot trial. Single combined 1 mmol/kg doses of both progoitrin nitriles as well as these two nitriles plus small doses of the other three failed to demonstrate any synergism, however, the characteristic and apparently dominant effects of CHEB were consistently demonstrated. The results of this pilot study confirmed the previously reported pancreatotoxicity of CHB and nephrotoxicity of CHEB. CHEB also caused intraepithelial pustules, submucosal oedema, erosions and ulcers in the squamous portion of the stomach. These stomach lesions, as well as the renal lesions, appear identical to those caused by another epithionitrile, 1-cyano-3,4-epithiobutane, derived from gluconapin, which was a minor glucosinolate in the swedes. Because of the fact that cyanide can be released with the metabolism of some nitriles, we analysed cyanide in the livers of treated rats. The liver of a rat dosed with 1 mmol/kg of 3-butenenitrile contained 0.5 μg/g of cyanide. Migration of vertically transmitted Toxocara canis larvae through the liver and lungs is poorly documented as a cause of periparturient mortality in puppies. This case series describes 4 cases of fading puppies in 2 litters from 2 different bitches owned by the same breeder. Of the 4 cases, 4 had verminous pneumonia, 2 had fibrinoid necrosis of pulmonary arterioles, 4 had hepatic necrosis and inflammation, 2 had hepatic thrombophlebitis, and 1 had tracheal occlusion. These lesions were associated with migrating nematode larvae morphologically consistent with T. canis . The identity of the larvae was confirmed by sequencing of a portion of the ITS-2 region of nuclear ribosomal DNA. The tissues involved are consistent with the known migration pathways of this parasite. The dam of the first litter was negative for Toxocara spp . and other intestinal parasites by fecal floatation. This report highlights the need to consider T. canis migration in the differential diagnosis of fading puppies.

Wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) has been associated with livestock and human photosensitization. An investigation of a natural occurrence of photosensitization of grazing horses identified wild parsnip as a possible cause. HPLC-MS and MS/MS analysis of this plant identified five furanocoumarins i.e., xanthotoxin, bergapten, isopimpinellin, imperatorin and a putative methoxyimperatorin. Goats fed this wild parsnip were largely unaffected. Xanthotoxin was not detected in the serum of parsnip-fed goats or in the serum of goats dosed orally or intravenous with purified xanthotoxin. Cutaneous application produced severe photodermatitis in goats and a horse consistent with topical exposure as the likely route to produce wild parsnip-induced photosensitivity. Wild parsnip-induced superficial necrotizing dermatitis was consistent with photodermatitis with no evidence of other allergic or inflammatory components., (Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

Clare's (1952) classification system for photosensitisation diseases (types I, II, III and Uncertain) has endured many years of use despite some confusion regarding his secondary, or type III, category, as well as the more recent discovery of two mechanisms (types I and II) of phototoxicity. Therefore, to reduce confusion in terminology, I propose that Clare's four groups be known as primary (or direct), secondary (indirect or hepatogenous), endogenous (aberrant porphyrin synthesis), and idiopathic . The use of the word type can then be reserved for the mechanisms of phototoxicity. Clare's (1952, 1955) papers listed three plants as primary photosensitisers and three as idiopathic. In the literature, several other plants have been associated with photosensitisation in farm animals. Most of these are likely to have a primary pathogenesis; however, the weight of evidence for all but a few is sparse. With respect to plants (and certain mycotoxins and insects) implicated in primary photosensitisation outbreaks, McKenzie's "toxicity confidence rankings" ( Australia's Poisonous Plants, Fungi and Cyanobacteria , 2012) has been adapted to "phototoxic agent confidence rankings". Thus, plants, mycotoxins or insects can be categorised regarding phototoxicity, i.e. definite (A); some evidence (B); suspected (C); or phototoxin isolated but no field cases known (D), and weight of evidence, i.e. field cases (1); experimental feeding produces photosensitisation (2); phototoxin isolated (3); phototoxin produces photosensitisation experimentally (4); and/or correlation of the action spectrum/chromatogram in blood or skin with the absorption spectrum/chromatogram of the phototoxin (5). As a result, confidence rankings ranging from A5 to D1 can be allocated. From the available literature, at least seventeen plant species can be ranked as A5 (definite phototoxicity with a maximum weight of evidence). The relatively recent breakthrough regarding the discovery of phototoxic anthraquinones in Heterophyllaea spp. has led to the serendipitous association of the same and similar anthraquinones as the most likely phototoxins in alligator weed ( Alternanthera philoxeroides )., (© 2019 The Author.)

Introduction: Photosensitization is a common clinical sign in cows suffering from liver damage caused by the mycotoxin sporidesmin. This disease, called facial eczema (FE), is of major importance in New Zealand. Current techniques for diagnosing animals with subclinical sporidesmin-induced liver damage (i.e. without photosensitization) are nonspecific. In addition, little is known of the mechanisms involved in sporidesmin resistance, nor the early effects seen following low-dose sporidesmin intoxication., Objective: The objective of this study was to identify individual metabolites or metabolic profiles that could be used as serum markers for early stage FE in lactating cows., Methods: Results are presented from a 59-day sporidesmin challenge in Friesian-cross dairy cows. Serum metabolite profiles were obtained using reversed phase ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (MS) and UPLC tandem MS. Multivariate and time series analyses were used to assess the data., Results: Statistical analysis, both with and without the temporal component, could distinguish the profiles of animals with clinical signs from the others, but not those affected subclinically. An increase in the concentrations of a combination of taurine- and glycine-conjugated secondary bile acids (BAs) was the most likely cause of the separation. This is the first time that MS methods have been applied to FE and that bile acids changes have been detected in cattle exposed to sporidesmin., Conclusions: It is well known that BA concentrations increase during cholestasis due to damage to bile ducts and leakage of the bile. This is the first study to investigate metabolomic changes in serum following a sporidesmin challenge. Tremetone and possibly other benzofuran ketones are believed to be the toxic compounds in white snakeroot. However, disease has not been reproduced with purified toxins and the concentrations of the benzofuran ketones in white snakeroot populations that cause toxicosis have not been documented. The objectives of this study were to compare the toxicity of seven plant populations, better characterize the clinical and pathologic changes of poisoning, and correlate intoxication with benzofuran ketone content. Four of the seven white snakeroot collections were toxic at the dose and duration used in the study. Affected goats became exercise intolerant, had significant serum enzyme changes and histological lesions in the large appendicular muscles. The incidence and severity of poisoning was not correlated with total doses of tremetone or total benzofuran ketone concentrations suggesting they may not be closely involved in producing toxicity and the possible involvement of an unidentified toxin. White snakeroot (Ageratina altissima) is a sporadically toxic plant that causes trembles in livestock and milk sickness in humans that drink tainted milk. The putative toxin in white snakeroot is tremetone and possibly other benzofuran ketones, even though it has not been demonstrated in vivo. Toxic white snakeroot was dosed to goats, and they developed clinical signs of poisoning, exercise intolerance, significant increases in serum enzyme activities, and histological changes. Tremetone and the other benzofuran ketones were extracted with hexane; the extracts and residues were analyzed for tremetone and dosed to goats at tremetone and benzofuran ketone concentrations similar to the original plant material. However, none of the dosed goats developed the disease. The results demonstrate for the first time that white snakeroot is a potent myotoxin in goats and that other compound(s), which may be lost or modified during the extraction process, could be involved in causing trembles and milk sickness.

Cattle grazing turnips or other brassica forage crops occasionally develop hepatogenous photosensitization. In New Zealand, cases of bovine photosensitization associated with such crops frequently occur during late summer and fall, and this coincides with the facial eczema (sporidesmin toxicosis) "season." Clinical chemistry findings in acute photosensitization cases associated with both brassica and facial eczema include marked serum elevations in γ-glutamyl transferase and glutamate dehydrogenase activities. Distinctive bile duct lesions of "subacute" turnip photosensitization in 2 cows, comprising microscopic cholangiectasis with concentric periductal fibrosis of small bile ducts, and a spectrum of changes from bile duct necrosis progressing to obliterative sclerosis are described. These bile duct lesions are compared with those in 3 cases of "subacute" facial eczema in adult cows, where medium-sized and larger ducts tend to be involved and bile duct hyperplasia and portal fibrosis are more prominent, often leading to bridging between neighboring portal triads., (© The Author(s) 2013.)

Sheep with Johne's disease develop epithelioid macrophage microgranulomas, specific to Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map) infection, in the terminal ileum, mesenteric lymph nodes, and organs distant to the alimentary tract such as the liver. The objectives of this study were to determine whether liver pathology was present in ewes affected by Map and whether liver cores provide adequate tissue for this potential diagnostic marker. One hundred and twenty-six adult, low body condition ewes were euthanized, necropsied, and underwent simulated liver biopsy. Ileal lesions typical of Map were found in 60 ewes. Hepatic epithelioid microgranulomas were observed in all ewes with Type 3b (n = 40) and 82% (n = 11) with Type 3c ileal lesions. None were found in ewes unaffected by Map or with Type 1, 2, or 3a ileal lesions. Liver biopsy core samples provided adequate tissue for histopathology with a sensitivity and specificity of 96% (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.87-0.99) and 100% (95% CI, 0.95-1), respectively for detection of types 3b and 3c ileal lesions., (© The Author(s) 2014.)

Turnip (Brassica rapa ssp. rapa) and rape (Brassica napus ssp. biennis) and other brassica forage crops are regarded as "safe" feed for cattle during late summer and fall in the North Island of New Zealand when high Pithomyces chartarum spore counts in pastures frequently lead to sporidesmin toxicity (facial eczema). Sporadic acute severe cases of turnip photosensitization in dairy cows characteristically exhibit high γ-glutamyl transferase and glutamate dehydrogenase serum enzyme activities that mimic those seen in facial eczema. The two diseases can, however, be distinguished by histopathology of the liver, where lesions, in particular those affecting small bile ducts, differ. To date, the hepato-/cholangiotoxic phytochemical causing liver damage in turnip photosensitization in cattle is unknown. Of the hydrolysis products of the various glucosinolate secondary compounds found in high concentrations in turnip and rape, work has shown that nitriles and epithionitriles can be hepatotoxic (and nephro- or pancreatotoxic) in rats. These derivatives include β-hydroxy-thiiranepropanenitrile and 3-hydroxy-4-pentenenitrile from progoitrin; thiiranepropanenitrile and 4-pentenenitrile from gluconapin; thiiranebutanenitrile and 5-hexenenitrile from glucobrassicanapin; phenyl-3-propanenitrile from gluconasturtiin; and indole-3-acetonitrile from glucobrassicin. This perspective explores the possibility of the preferential formation of such derivatives, especially the epithionitriles, in acidic conditions in the bovine rumen, followed by absorption, hepatotoxicity, and secondary photosensitization.
