Overweight and obesity prevalence in children has increased worldwide. One factor contributing to this rise is the increase in portion sizes, with individuals potentially having difficulties with portion size estimation. Portion size estimation could be improved with portion size education involving the mathematical concepts of volume and capacity. The current study aimed to explore mathematical teaching practices related to volume and capacity measurement in Australian primary schools, with a focus on use of nutrition related examples and technology. A convenience sample of 101 teachers completed an online exploratory survey reporting information on their teaching background, experience, use of resources, digital games and curricular integration. Results indicated that the teachers surveyed favoured use of Smartboards and cubes to teach volume and capacity, and the majority reported using nutrition-related examples including household measures, recipes and grocery shopping. They also expressed having positive beliefs and interest in using digital games for teaching these concepts. Although mathematics is most commonly integrated with science and technology, the teachers surveyed indicated that a digital game integrating nutrition and mathematics could be very useful. There is potential to investigate ways to integrate portion size estimation activities within mathematics teaching practices which can be facilitated using digital games.

Context Diet quality indices (DQIs) assess the level of adherence to dietary recommendations and a specified dietary pattern in populations; however, there is limited evidence regarding the construct criteria and validation methodology of DQIs used in pregnant women. Objectives The objectives of this study were to (i) identify and describe characteristics of DQIs that have been validated for use in pregnant women in high-income countries, and (ii) evaluate criteria used to develop DQIs and validation methodologies employed. Data Sources CINAHL, Embase, Medline, SCOPUS, and Web of Science were systematically searched for eligible articles published between 1980 and November 2022 that focused on DQIs validated for use in pregnant women from high-income countries. Data Extraction Characteristics, development criteria, and validation methodologies used in the included articles were extracted by one reviewer and checked by a second reviewer. Data Analysis A narrative synthesis and descriptive statistics were used to summarize the review findings. Reporting was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses statement. Results Six articles with 5 validated DQIs were identified. In total, 3777 participants were included – five articles had pregnant women aged 31–50 years and in their second trimester. Food frequency questionnaires were used as the dietary assessment method in all studies, and 3 DQIs were used to assess dietary intake at 1 time point, using 2 different dietary assessment methods. No indices fulfilled preferred features for the DQI development criteria developed by Burggraf et al (2018). Construct validity was assessed by all DQIs, followed by criterion validity (n = 4) and test–retest reliability (n = 2). Conclusion Limited high-quality validated DQIs for use in pregnant women in high-income countries were identified. Scoring for DQI components were not specific to nutrient requirements for pregnant women. Findings from this review may inform the development of DQIs that evaluate specific dietary requirements and specific food safety considerations applicable to pregnancy. Background: Women with a history of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Although clinical practice guidelines for management of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy recommend involvement of a general practitioner for ongoing cardiovascular disease preventative care, there are no intervention strategies embedded within primary care aimed at improving risk assessment or management for women after hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. The study aim was to co-design an intervention to improve implementation of cardiovascular disease risk assessment and management following hypertensive disorders of pregnancy for primary care settings in a local health district in New South Wales, Australia. Method: Using the Integrated Knowledge Translation framework, a series of five co-design meetings with the investigative team and end users were conducted online. Meetings were informed by the Behaviour Change Wheel framework for intervention development and incorporated research findings from a systematic review and meta-analysis, surveys and an online discussion. Data from activities and audio recordings following each meeting were analysed thematically using inductive–deductive thematic analysis. Results were summarized after each meeting, and findings used to inform ongoing intervention development. Results: The 18 end users included women with lived experience of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (n = 8), obstetricians (n = 2), midwives (n = 5) and general practitioners (n = 3). Target priorities were to improve communication between hospital staff and general practitioners following the occurrence of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and increase the knowledge of general practitioners and women regarding cardiovascular disease prevention after cardiometabolic pregnancy complications. Part 1 of the intervention is set within the hospital setting and delivered via physical resources to address the communication gap between hospital and primary care providers about the occurrence of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Part 2 is delivered via an update to an existing general practice education platform and through resources for use within consultations to provide education for women and general practitioners about cardiovascular disease prevention after hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Conclusion: The Integrated Knowledge Translation and Behaviour Change Wheel frameworks aided in the development of a targeted intervention to improve implementation of cardiovascular risk assessment and management for women after hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, based on gaps identified in current primary care practice. Background/Objectives: For low- and middle- income country (LMIC) settings, a global nutrition transition is rapidly emerging as diets shift, resulting in a dual burden of malnutrition. High quality dietary intake data for these populations is essential to understand dietary patterns contributing to these nutrition issues. New technology is emerging to address dietary assessment challenges; however, it is unknown how researchers conducting studies with LMIC populations or under-served groups in high-income countries adopt technology-assisted methods. This study aimed to describe the features of the dietary assessment methods used in these settings. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of members of an online international nutrition network was conducted. Participants completed an online questionnaire collecting data on dietary assessment method use, populations studied, and factors influencing method selection. Results: Of 45 participants (ranging from 27 to 60 years) who completed the questionnaire, 67% conducted dietary assessments in children aged 1–5 years, 60% in pregnant women and 60% in female adults. Dietary assessment was conducted predominantly in countries classified as LMIC (n = 50), compared to the assessment of vulnerable groups in high-income countries (n = 3). All participants reported using 24-h recalls, 80% used food frequency questionnaires, while 22% used image-based and 22% used image-assisted methods. Predominant modes were interviewer-administered, paper questionnaires and manual analysis; however, digital survey platforms were used by nearly half of participants. Conclusions: Although traditional dietary assessment methods continue to dominate in LMICs, evidence of technological-assisted method use is emerging. Background: Women with a history of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), including chronic hypertension, gestational hypertension, and preeclampsia have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Current research suggests that general practitioners are unaware of women's HDP history, and although ideally placed to follow-up with these women, there is limited understanding of current CVD prevention practices in women after HDP. Additionally, preeclampsia confers a higher CVD risk compared to other types of HDP, and Australian research suggests that lower socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with a higher incidence of both HDP and CVD. Therefore, the aim of the analysis was to investigate awareness of CVD risk and care received from health professionals among women with a history of HDP and examine differences between type of HDP and SES. Methods: Analysis of a cross-sectional survey of 293 Australian women with a history of HDP (from 2017 onwards). Data were analysed using basic descriptive statistics. To assess differences in HDP type and SES, one-way ANOVA was used to assess continuous variables and χ2 tests for categorical variables, with P < 0.05 considered statistically significant. Results: Most women with a history of HDP were unaware of their increased CVD risk (68%). Women with a history of preeclampsia, gestational hypertension or preeclampsia were more aware of CVD risk compared to those with chronic hypertension (p = 0.02). Regardless of HDP type or SES, women post-HDP were less likely to receive assessment and management of lifestyle CVD risk factors compared to blood pressure. Most women felt supported in managing stress and mental health, but not for managing body weight, smoking and sleep. Conclusions: Women with a history of HDP are unaware of their increased CVD risk and are not receiving recommended CVD preventative care, irrespective of HDP type and/or SES. Background/Objectives: Thus far, no studies have examined the relationship between fruit and vegetable (F and V) intake, urinary metabolite quantities, and weight change. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to explore changes in urinary metabolomic profiles during and after a 10-week weight loss intervention where participants were prescribed a high F and V diet (7 servings daily). Methods: Adults with overweight and obesity (n = 34) received medical nutrition therapy counselling to increase their F and V intakes to national targets (7 servings a day). Data collection included weight, dietary intake, and urine samples at baseline at week 2 and week 10. Urinary metabolite profiles were quantified using 1H NMR spectroscopy. Machine learning statistical approaches were employed to identify novel urine-based metabolite biomarkers associated with high F and V diet patterns at weeks 2 and 10. Metabolic changes appearing in urine in response to diet were quantified using Metabolite Set Enrichment Analysis (MSEA). Results: Energy intake was significantly lower (p = 0.02) at week 10 compared with baseline. Total F and V intake was significantly higher at week 2 and week 10 (p < 0.05). In total, 123 urinary metabolites were quantified. At week 10, 21 metabolites showed significant changes relative to baseline. Of these, 11 metabolites also significantly changed at week 2. These overlapping metabolites were acetic acid, dimethylamine, choline, fumaric acid, glutamic acid, L-tyrosine, histidine, succinic acid, uracil, histamine, and 2-hydroxyglutarate. Ridge Classifier and Linear Discriminant Analysis provided best prediction accuracy values of 0.96 when metabolite level of baseline was compared to week 10. Conclusions: Urinary metabolites quantified represent potential candidate biomarkers of high F and V intake, associated with a reduction in energy intake. Background The TRACE (Targeted Research for Addictive and Compulsive Eating) intervention was evaluated in a 3-month randomized controlled trial which demonstrated significant improvement in Yale Food Addiction Scale scores favoring dietitian-led telehealth (active intervention) compared with passive and control groups. This study aimed to determine intervention costs and cost-utility. Methods Costs of each intervention (2021$AUD) and incremental net monetary benefit (iNMB; incremental benefit, defined as Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALY) gained, multiplied by willingness to pay threshold minus incremental cost) were calculated to estimate differences between groups. Results The active intervention (n = 38) cost $294 (95% UI: $266, $316) per person compared to $47 (95% UI: $40, $54) in the passive intervention (n = 24), and $26 in the control group (n = 37). At a cost-effectiveness threshold of $50 000 per QALY score gained, the active intervention iNMB was -$186 (95% UI: -$1137, $834) and the passive group $127 (95% UI: -$1137, $834). Compared to the control group, estimates indicate a 30% chance of the active intervention, and a 60% chance of the passive intervention being cost effective. Conclusion Although the overall cost of the active intervention was low, this was not considered cost-effective in comparison to the passive intervention, given small QALY score gains. Background: Healthy dietary patterns can support the maintenance of cognition and brain health in older age and are negatively associated with cardiometabolic risk. Cardiometabolic risk factors are similarly important for cognition and may play an important role in linking diet to cognition. Aim: This study aimed to explore the relationship between dietary patterns and cognition and to determine whether cardiometabolic health markers moderate these relationships in older adulthood. Design: A cross-sectional analysis of observational data from the baseline of the ACTIVate study. Participants: The cohort included 426 cognitively normal adults aged 60–70 years. Methods: The Australian Eating Survey (AES) Food Frequency Questionnaire was used to collect data on usual dietary intake, along with additional questions assessing intake of dietary oils. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to reduce the dimensionality of dietary data. Cardiometabolic risk was quantified using the metabolic syndrome severity score (MetSSS). Tests from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) were used to derive composite scores on four cognitive domains: processing speed, executive function, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Results: Three dietary patterns were identified using PCA: a plant-dominant diet, a Western-style diet, and a meat-dominant diet. After controlling for age, sex, total years of education, energy intake, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), there was a small, negative association between the meat-dominant diets and long-term memory. Subsequent moderation analysis indicated that MetSSS significantly moderated this relationship. Conclusions: Findings highlight the link between diet, cardiometabolic health, and cognitive function in older, cognitively healthy adults. However, longitudinal studies are needed to confirm observations and evaluate the dynamics of diet, cardiometabolic health, and cognitive function over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Emerging evidence suggests that nature imagery can affect consumer food choices. However, little is known about whether and, if so, how food companies use nature imagery as a means to appeal to consumers' environmental concerns as a marketing strategy. The current study aims to explore this matter for websites of Australian food companies. We extracted images from 45 Australian food company websites and coded for (1) nature type, (2) restorative effect, (3) level of cultivation and human interference, and (4) processing level (only for images with food present). All included food companies had a separate webpage dedicated to sustainability, and most nature images were located there. Sustainability pages had more images of 'pure nature' (i.e., no cultivation or human interference and high in restorative effects) and more 'urban' images compared to the main pages. Most food in the images was unprocessed, while only one image featured both nature and food. Australian food companies are commonly using images of nature on their sustainability webpages. The images might be used as a marketing strategy to connect with consumers' environmental concerns as a strategy to build trust and affinity with customers. Background: A sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is a lifelong treatment that improves health and better outcomes are associated with follow‐up. However, there is lack of access or high attrition to aftercare. This potentially contributes to sub‐optimal dietary intake and a lack of evidence for nutrition interventions. The present study assessed the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a nutrition intervention to improve diet quality in Australian adults living with a SG. Methods: Adults (n = 96) post‐SG were recruited into a cross‐sectional diet quality study, with 68 eligible for randomisation to an intervention or wait‐list control group. Over 10 weeks, a Facebook group was used to post daily nutrition education. Feasibility outcomes included participant recruitment, engagement, retention and acceptability. Preliminary efficacy was assessed using change in Australian Recommended Food Score (ARFS). Linear mixed models were used to measure differences in mean outcome between the experimental groups over time. Results: Sixty‐eight participants (97% female) aged 48.2 ± 9.8 years, body mass index 33.1 ± 5.8 kg/m2, and mean ± SD ARFS 39 ± 9 points were randomised to the intervention, with 66% retention at 10 weeks. At follow‐up, diet quality increased for the intervention group (mean ARFS, 95% confidence interval = 0.2 [−1.5 to 1.9]) and decreased for the control group (mean ARFS, 95% confidence interval= −2.0 [−5.2 to 1.2]) with no between group difference (p = 0.2). Participants (n = 30) rated the intervention positively. Conclusions: Recruiting and retaining adults post‐SG into a nutrition intervention is feasible. Low‐cost recruitment attracted strong interest from women to identify greater support to know what to eat following SG. A future fully powered trial to assess intervention efficacy is warranted. Background: Weight stigma is prevalent within healthcare settings and is an aspect of the lived experience of people living with obesity. There is international evidence of weight stigma in the dental setting, where currently there is also evidence indicating limited training amongst dental professionals regarding obesity or obesity‐related stigma. There has been Australian research and none have included dental support staff. Aims: This cross‐sectional survey aimed to assess stigmatizing attitudes and beliefs of dental professionals (registered general dentists, oral health therapists) and support staff (dental assistants, dental receptionists) working in private and public regional practices in New South Wales and specialists in Special Needs Dentistry across Australia toward people living with obesity. Methods: An anonymous electronic validated survey was administered through REDCap™ to assess stigmatizing attitudes and beliefs held amongst respondents in relation to people living with obesity. Results: Fifty‐three participants completed the survey (n = 33 clinicians, n = 20 support staff). The majority 47/53 (88.7%) held positive attitudes toward people living with obesity. Of the clinicians, 15/33 (45.5%) reported 1 hour or less and 14/33 (42.4%) reported two to 5 hours of obesity‐related education. 14/20 (70%) of the support staff reported no prior education or training about obesity. Of responses reflecting weight stigma, only three clinicians reported negative reactions toward the appearance, or discomfort during examination, of a patient with obesity, or a perception of laziness, compared with normal weight individuals. A higher proportion 4/20 (20%) of support staff reported responses indicating negative attitudes for people with obesity compared with normal weight individuals. Conclusion: Survey responses reflected evidence of weight stigma in both dental professionals and support staff. The aim was to assess pregnant women&apos;s carbohydrate and standard serve size knowledge and examine whether health professionals provided nutrition education. Methods Between July 2017 and April 2018 Australian pregnant women were recruited to complete an online survey, including a modified PedCarbQuiz carbohydrate knowledge questionnaire and an online buffet, where they selected images equivalent to one Australian Guide to Healthy Eating (AGHE) standard serve size. Results 186 pregnant women (mean age 30.9 years, SD = 4.7 years) 12-22 weeks gestation completed the survey. Participants achieved a median score of 27/36 for identification of carbohydrate-containing foods and a median score of 1/12 (range 0-11) for identification of grams of carbohydrate in specific portions. Participants achieved a median score of 14/22 (range 4-19) for identification of one AGHE standard serve of 11 carbohydrate-containing foods. Less than half (n = 92, 49.5%) received nutrition education from health professionals. Conclusions for Practice Pregnant women had sub-optimal carbohydrate knowledge. This could contribute to impaired blood glucose concentrations and risk of adverse health outcomes in pregnancy. Opportunities for pregnant women to access nutrition advice from health professionals should be explored.
